For anybody who loves painting tanks and aircraft. If you handpaint, get your self a tube or 2 of Vallejo Steel 71.065. This not only works as a primer but has turned all my tanks to looking like plastic to actually appearing as kits made of steel. It seals well and doesn't distort any colours you paint over it. I use noting but Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics and they make my models look fantastically realistic.

@@andrewoconnor5108 71.065 Is the code of the paint. My current project the Tamiya Sherman M4A3E8 when sitting in this paint looks metal NOT plastic. it's a great paint to use throughout build as it adds realism to your tanks but also helps any paints over it hold on better.
I hope this tip works well for you and you need only to lightly apply it. Let me know how it goes and i look forward to hearing about it.

Great advice Owen! For my own models I have used Citadel Washes and Techinical paint which are acrylic base and work quite well. On my last kit I used a water soluble artist oil paint. It can be thinned with water and before it dries it can be cleaned up with a Q tip or cotton bud dampened in water. Good luck with the job and thanks for sharing these tips.

    Greetings from Australia!
G'day Owen, Would love to share that you were my inspiration to paint tanks by hand. Although I can professionally airbrush there's just something about hand painting.
One of my favourite videos on your channel that helped me weather tanks was your Sherman Firefly. My question for you is, Do you enjoy building and comparing the differences in detail of US tanks modified for the British?
For example the M10 Wolverine became the Achilles.

0:52 i dont know where i saw it, but it works decently for me so far, is picking a piece of the sprue itself and heating it with a lighter and when its starts to be flexible pull it out, this should give you a decently thin (altho maybe a bit thick for some peoples liking) wire

For the models where weathering is avoided (regardless of individual preference) there's always the planes used by aerobatic display teams like the Red Arrows. Though I suppose trying to replicate the immaculate gloss finish maintained on those hawks could be seen as a weathering challenge in itself...

When should I use (Enamel) Varnish?
Unless your model has a dark base colour, you want to look slightly browned or dirty with age or is going to be exhibited in a very dark place, NEVER!!!!
Use Matt, Gloss or Satin Cote instead; You can also make washes out of the Humbrol Cotes.
Same for Humbrol Decal Fix (use Micro set/sol instead).
Also, Revel & Tamiya 'do' make far better metallic colours and I personally only ever use Tamiya for clear colours.

I've never used Humbrol acrylics, but I love those Revell Aqua paints. they barely make any brushstrokes if thinned properly and when I use drying retarder you would think I'm using enamel paints :D The only problems that I had were with Revell Aqua 56 Blau, it seemed as if there wasn't enough pigment in them, they created these streaks of blue colour. Had to apply a lot of layers to make an even finish. Also I can't seem to thin some of the gloss paints with water, so I need to use alcohol. I'm glad you are back.
