- Not one of my better tournaments/videos but because I take pride in showing the bad tournaments along with the good ones, I'm posting this one.
Smith Mountain Lake has always been a tough place for me on tournament day. It's one of the fisheries I just can not wrap my hands around and figure out. It's very frustrating as you'll see in this video.

My third time on the lake. First as a boater. Was expecting a bed fishing event. Next to no bites during practice. One bite during the tournament, but at least it was a 5-7. It was the very back of a pocket on a laydown. Got really tired of the cold and high wind conditions, but I’ll be back.
I am fishing all 5 as well. Keep your head up! Any day could be your day anywhere. I will see you on the Potomac River.
In the opinions of people who have fish this lake, what do y'all think makes this lake so tough on catching fish?
I think it’s the dam. The dam is closed every weekend and open Monday thru Friday. Fish move and position different when the dam is open vs when it’s closed. When it’s open they’ll position on that offshore structure and become catchable. When it’s closed they’ll suspend out off of it and become tough to catch. They’ll also position the same way on shallow cover when the dam is open. The current flow is key to bass fishing.
Hey man stay positive trust me I understand how you feel me and my son fished high rock big bass bash this past weekend and they were bring up 4 and 5 lbers left and right and we couldn't catch a bass at all not even the smallest. We did catch crappie and catfish but no bass.. he was upset but we will try again next year. It was a 3 hour drive for us each way we live next to wilmington but don't give up buddy you are better than that.. u just need to practice more on that pond that's all.. Great video tho but never give up because when u do u start to loose hope... tight lines...

Been to SML my self in the past 3 to 4 years and haven't been susessful in tournaments. But have been there fun fishing or (practice) and done really well. Big Largey and some pretty decent Smally's. Don't give up brother, you have the talent and the drive...trust me your day will come
Hope you can keep up the faith. I do get it, I got fed up with gaston, going out there and getting beat up with waves and only catching a few small fish. there were days I got some good ones. IMO Gaston just doesn't fish well. On Gaston you will hear lawn mowers weed wackers and blowers everyday just wasn't my cup of tea. good luck on future tournaments
Don't let it beat you. This is what we do. Trust in the adversity, and it will pay dividends. SML isn't easy, there are a lot of variables. Stay the course.
I know exactly what you mean. I done spent 1000 dollars in gas on that lake to catch 2 12 inches. hate that lake

I feel you playa!!!! Caught 30 fish Thursday and Friday in NC. Went to SML today and got 3 bites lmao

Smith mountain is a tough lake man like you said but an excellent fishery it’s where I fish all the time I always fish up the Roanoke river / middle of the lake. I try to stay away from the super clean water I just never do as well. I know it would be a longer boat ride from where you would launch from but maybe check into it in practice in the future if you come back.
At this point I’d run the entire lake twice to catch a limit. Thanks for the insight. If/when I go back I may try and run as far up as possible both rivers and see if I can dial something in that way. 👍🏻
Why the boat change? Looking forward to dealing with Collin's. My dealer has lied to me for the last time. I will be using Collin's from now on for my Ranger needs. Even though it will be an extra 1 1/2 hour drive.
I sold my Ranger and I’m waiting to get into a new one.
Collins is a great dealer and I’m sure you’ll have a good experience there.

Hope you don’t teach your kids just because something is hard and you don’t get it the first time you make a video crying about it and quit.
it’s just post tournament yapping. every tournament fisherman says stuff like this at some point and eventually finds themselves back because in the end of the day the challenge is addicting.

@@JeffreyDavisFishing we have all been there. I fish the potomac almost exclusively and when i first started i remember saying how garbage the place is. now a 15lb bag comes easy. its hard to get good at a place when a practice for bfl is your only exposure all year. I guess thats what separates the pros from the joes but there’s a reason there’s not that many of em haha. keep doing your thing
