    Everyone seems so excited for the night tube, but a big city like London should really have a 24/7 subway. Here in Copenhagen, we have a population of just 1 million, but our underground runs every 20 minutes in the night - even in weekdays!

      +Londonist Ltd that's great but the weekend is when we get the most work done on the track. 24 hour running will increase failures which will affect the day running when you really need it.

      Dave Bateman exactly! Croydon is the borough with the highest population in the Greater London area. Yet we have wasted stations like Roding Valley, the 5 Ruislips, Chesham, Amersham and Chorleywood which aren't even in greater London and no one lives there. It's a joke!

    • @stephthestar90
      @stephthestar90 7 років тому +8

      Apparently Roding Valley is one of the least used LU stations, with only 200,000 passengers a year. I've never understood why places like Amersham or Chesham have LU stations. Is it an offshoot of the old Metropolitan Railway's plans to become more of a suburban railway service or to do with 'Metroland'? I've never been to those towns, but I watched an episode of Midsomer Murders last night which was partly filmed in Chesham.

    I was in London twice this year, once in September and once in May/June. Their lines are expansive, but only one way in each direction per line. There are no express tracks as in New York or Philadelphia. But their maintenance and service schedule is still miles above DC (where I live and where I am enduring a year-long remedial Metro repair to get it to "fair" instead of "poor/dangerous"). And even New York's 24-hour service has limits despite multiple lines and express track. Part of the London upgrades on the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, District, and Circle lines are in part to get them ready for Night Tube service -- as well as to update the infrastructure for new trains. I am happy that there is this coming, and hoping this will be expanded to other days as well.

    I sometimes wonder if the Central line needs the night services. I've seen people on Twitter saying that the line has got worse since it went onto night tube because it means less time for engineering works. The SSL won't be going on it until the 4LM is complete, but I don't know how it'll work at some of the outer stations on those lines.

    A good idea for those who like to party, but don't want to have to sit in a railway station for a few hours, waiting for the milk-train, or fight to get onto a crowded night bus! Still, I'm surprised that they're not running the Heathrow service sooner - I would have thought it would have been one of the first ...

      It used to be called Heathrow Central when it first opened, before the loop and the T4 (and later T5) station was built. It's a pity the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow doesn't run overnight during the week as well as I would imagine it would be useful for people getting early morning flights rather than spending money on hotels or taxis/buses or for car parking.

    nice job by the Transport for London Night tube programme and regarding the map there is a similarity between the Piccadilly line cockfosters to Heathrow Terminal 5 and MTA A train to Far Rockaway is that they serve an airport stop 24/7 in this case Heathrow Terminal 5 and Howard beach-jfk. victoria Jubilee and northern line Central section have MTA Subway equivalents they are 1, 2 , 4, 6 & 7 Trains and BMT/IND A, D, E, F, G, J & L trains which operate the entire line during late night service

    • @mattpotter8725
      @mattpotter8725 8 років тому +1

      It's not just union problems. You can't expect people to change to work at night at the drop of a hat for the same money. This should have been thought of and new people recruited right at the start. The safety issue was also a problem and i kind of agree with them. If when 7/7 happened there hadn't been staff on the trains to help the people out and get them to safety then the situation would have been a lot worse. Sure this kind of incident doesn't happen very often, but it still needs to be planned for and does cost money. Whether you like it or not the London Underground is a Victorian underground railway on the whole that hasn't been upgraded or invested in as it should have been for a long time, well until recently I would say. It wasn't designed for things like driverless trains and some of the signals are so old it is a surprise they even work. I'm sure it will eventually, but it will take a lot of investment to get it to that stage.

      Doubt the circle line or H&C will as there isn't much call for them during the day at weekends let alone nights, I imagine District and Metropolitan will join though, meaning the Circle and H&C won't need a night service

    I think after the night tube many night bus routes should change to cover a new demand

    Wow there wasn't a Night Service in London until recently? Even my sub 1 million city in Germany has had night service since forever, on all lines, 7 days a week.

    10 minutes is really frequent, but 7 1/2? that's waaay too much more that it'd be needed. And the only logical service (to meat least) that would make a good use of the 10 minutes frequency is the service between Heathrow and the Centre of the city. (But beware, im no Londoner nor English not British nor Western European, so my view doesn't have to meet the London standards)

      It's only 7 1/2 as there's two destinations for the northern line out of Morden and they amalgamate en route hence the more frequent time

      +I Am Secretly A Penguin Yes, I understand that, but still, I mean that 7 1/2 minutes are too frequent. I think 20 minutes in both branches would be more than enough, so there'd be 10 minutes in the city centre

    Now Vancouver #SkyTrain got to figure out how to introduce 24 hrs #SkyTrain service similar to Copenhagen Metro. At the moment operators BCRTC and ProTransBC and parent transit agency TransLink would be better off to extend the current operating hours (but not actually 24 hrs yet). Then TransLink, ProTransBC, and BCRTC should work on introducing 24 hrs service on public holidays. Next, TransLink, BCRTC, and ProTransBC should extend 24 hrs service to Saturday nights only similar to Barcelona. The long term goal for #SkyTrain operating hours is TransLink, BCRTC, and ProTransBC to introduce and operate all lines and stations 24/7.
