I have done fly lady for 15 years. I printed off her lists. Adapted those to my home life. I love how each week of the month has in depth focus on one area. The morning and evening routines are the daily chores like we all brush our teeth twice a day (I hope) but we still have an overall focus area each week. Crucial though is to make decluttering a focus in the beginning. At least for some of us. Gradually the routines take hold. I gave it a few months and I noticed a huge difference. No more weekend all day cleaning. 15 minutes a day was fine.
My wife uses this system and swears by it--she was in a similar situation as the Flylady (depressed, paralyzed while trying to exit a bad marriage while coping with the deaths of both her parents) and she used it to help get her life in track. One thing she (FL) stresses is not to even try the zone system until you have the basics established, and for some that might take a long time. I looked into adapting it for younger single folks and it's true what you say about the website being really old school and not very intuitive to navigate though she has a site map hidden away in there. A few hacks I'd use are to substitute a spreadsheet of certain areas of *your* life for the zones and try to work on them a bit every day. For example if you're a single guy (or lady), maybe you don't need to do laundry every day or clean your bathroom every day, but you might have backyard chickens or a vegetable garden, or you might be in the middle of a big home remodel. If you're a shift worker (the wife is a nurse) you might want to spend some time cooking a few dishes and packaging them for your lunches so you don't have to spend time on that every day. It's a very adaptable system, unlike that Marie Kondo thing which is too rigid for it to work for a lot of people. And yeah she REALLY needs to find a webmaster to upgrade the site. A lot of your objections could have been solved with a few decent charts. Just my 2 cents.
I started it couple years ago after doing a massive declutter. I started it a couple times actually 😂. The thing with F L is if you fall off you just pick back up where you left off. No judgement just move on. The weekly home reset which is quick makes you feel great every week. Do the daily routines first even if you don’t get to everything every day. I love having a clean kitchen, a clean bathroom, and a made bed every day. My bath was always so messy but once I got a bin for my makeup, a bin for my everyday toiletries, and a bin for my sometimes toiletries and put those in my bath cabinet and could just take them out and put them back every day my sink and counter were free and I could wipe them down quickly every day. Game changer for me. I don’t work every zone every month but when I do I notice it’s better than it was before. Still a work in progress but so much better than it was before.
I have been doing the FlyLady system since 2003. While I've tried other systems, I always go back to hers. It took me a bit to get into the swing of it, but I did. I love, love zone cleaning. One truly has to lose perfectionism to embrace zone cleaning, though. It's definitely a mind shift. Also, decluttering is imperative, which she emphasizes. As you know, it's very efficient to maintain rooms (zones) in a decluttered home. 😊 As for unplanned messes, the daily routines keep that in check (if it doesn’t immediately need to be addressed.) Nothing ever feels overwhelming or "out of control" for me. In my brain, I organize her system into 3 sections: Daily Routines, Weekly Home Blessing, and zones. I break up the WHB over the week. There is usually one task out of the WHB and one or two tasks of the current zone each day. With consistency, nothing takes long or is hard. What's the saying? "A little each day keeps the big scrub away."😁 I always enjoy hearing and learning systems people use. It's always fun learning what works and doesn't work for people.😊
I view the zone cleaning completely differently from how you described it...I just do 15 min a day in the one zone for 5 days, that's it. Sometimes the home blessing (living areas) is the same as the zone, so easy! I don't do much for the home blessing anyway if I don't want to. The daily pick up put away (PUPA) by everyone in the family for 5-10 mins makes it all so just easier. Diane in Denmark is a valuable youtube resource for Flylady, which has totally changed my home mgt practices for the better.
I read her book many, many years ago and the main thing I took away from it was the zone cleaning hahaha! I choose one zone or room per week where I focus on deep cleaning and decluttering that space. I have 12 zones, so I deep clean and declutter my entire home every three months. I still have my daily chores and each day I choose a different weekly chore to clean so it doesn't feel overwhelming. Thanks for sharing your experience with this Sarah!💗
Diane in Denmark 31 Days Baby Steps was how I got it. Before I was overwhelmed and gave up then I followed the Baby Steps and it worked. It was so easy to follow . And now 5 years later I believe it has been , I am organized, decluttered , less stressed, have so much more time in my day. I am FLYING. I love it .
I’ve adopted some aspects of flylady into my daily routine. But as you said not all of it works for me right now. I find the morning and evening routines helpful. The bathroom swish and swipe and floor spot cleaning has also helped me to feel less overwhelmed on weekends when I don’t have time for a big powerhour time cleaning sesh.
LOVE the video Sarah! I appreciate the honesty, "here's what I like about FlyLady" and "things I didn't love about it." The DeLorean and 90s clips had my dying. I'm also writing this without shoes or socks, and still able to write whole sentan.....um....sandwiches. oh no.....
I found Dianne in Denmark the most helpful when researching this video ❤️ Although I did notice she made some changes too which made me feel much better about myself 🤣
Such a good review of flylady! I remember trying to establish the routines and found I was spending hours planning and not actually cleaning. I would have loved to have an overview page of the whole program too but couldn’t find anything on the website!
I tried fly lady. It wasn’t for me. I made my own routine but I did write down all the jobs that need done in each room. Put the pages in a sheet protector and mark it off as I go. This works for me.
Okay so the clips were hilarious! I am a barefoot or house slippers kinda of girl too! I agree there can be some good ideas with flylady, and I do like some of her ideals behind a cleaning schedule for sure, but I have found in my crazy busy life I follow my own schedule. I have one day each week and I spend 1-2 hours cleaning the whole house. Like every bedroom and bath (my daughter does her own of course) and then I just keep up with the kitchen and those areas daily. I do laundry twice a week to include the towels/sheets/clothes and that works so much better for me :-) I find I spent way less time cleaning but my home stays tidy (plus minimalism and very very little stuff to manage helps me clean in no time! ) Haha Loved this as always my friend!!!
Hi, I completely fall in love with your mattress which is on the floor (1:34). Where did you get it? I am living on the Gold Coast too, but I haven't managed to find something similar yet.
I have heard of Flylady but never looked into it. I felt it was more for people without a full-time job. It sounded like alot. With working full-time you just don't have the time. Thanks for breaking it down.
Pretty much spot on 👍 I like it because it helped me get confidence in my abilities but... I have never managed to get the whole thing going smoothly and time is an issue like you mentioned. I love my lace up shoes though 😉❤ x x x
I loosely follow the flylady system and I love the app. I really just do the morning routine tho lol! I would highly recommend checking out the secret slob who has tweeked the flylady routine very nicely.
I don't put shoes on until I leave the house. But I always shower and dress and put on a little makeup everyday. I think that's the point... I enjoy your videos so much.
I tried zone cleaning and that doesn’t work for me neither. The system I am using right now is I clean kitchen (while I cook) and bathrooms (the sink and mirror when I brush my teeth, the shower when I shower, and the toilet after i used the toilet) daily - it’s supper quick as it never had a chance to build up dirt. And then hubby does a weekly dust, vacuum and mop.
That's how Flylafy does her daily swish and swipe and her daily shower clean. It makes it so that the weekly and monthly cleaning of those surfaces is easy easy or even unnecessary.
In all honesty I have never tried the Fly lady but I know for sure that the ‘zones cleaning’ would never work for me! As you have mentioned many times before, we need to use what works best for us! Hope all is back on track after the flood 😊. Take care, love from England (soon to be Germany!) 🥰❤️
I have a morning and evening routine and then during the day I clean what calls to be cleaned. There might be certain areas of my home I might do on certain days of the week like bathrooms and toilets on a Friday for example but generally I go with the flow.
Back in 2001 or so, a friend introduced me to FlyLady. I love doing the 27 Fling Boogie! And lots of her concepts helped me start my decluttering journey. But the website was, and is, a hot mess, and a lot of her systems were just too much to handle. I received a million emails a day, reminding me to do the laundry and drink water and start supper. I had to unsubscribe! I like seeing different variations of her system.
We are only meant to be quickly whipping through the jobs, 10 min each. Not vacuuming the entire house in one go, just kitchen bathroom and main traffic areas. That's where i get stuck- i feel like i MUST vaccy the whole house, and that can take twice as long as it should. I can do all the other chores in 10 min though. But there's only me. I agree if there are kiddies, there's gonna be a lot more "PUPAs" needed.
@@thatswhatisaid8908 "i feel like i MUST".....and that is what gets so many of us in trouble and looking for cleaning systems and bouncing from one to another without any of them ever having time to take hold. I think is the best part of FlyLady. I dropped the milk jug all over the floor AND I still HAVE to do my zone!!

Some of these expectations, especially for WFH moms, as many young moms are right now, are unrealistic. You need to come up with a simple, easy going routine for your viewers. Great video! Thank you, this is the best explanation I've heard of flylady. I have not tried it because I found it very overwhelming.

Thank you so much Lorikate ❤️ I'm so glad it was helpful
There are a few ladies on UA-cam that are great to explain flylady in a less overwhelming way. They have 'baby steps' playlists.

A Slob Comes Clean does a great job at simplifying the FlyLady system.
