I also don't know why people hated it. It had the best of the Dark Phoenix saga. The role reversal between Jean and Scott, the ambiguity of whether it's Jean that is corrupt or it's the entity controlling her, and Jean killing herself somewhat heroically at the end. The director did a good job putting all of this in one movie.
