Friendly Goliath Grouper gets help from a diver! (And becomes his new best friend!)

- Jonathan and Zach travel to a shipwreck in Florida to film a gigantic (some would say Goliath!) grouper named Wilbur. When they arrive, they discover that Wilbur has fishing gear stuck in his mouth, so they attempt a rescue, and Wilbur becomes their new best friend!

It never gets old seeing Goliath groupers diving! They are usually very distant or very friendly! There’s one encounter at key largo that always stuck out to me. It was a night dive and out of nowhere this 5 1/2 foot Goliath showed up and wouldn’t leave my side. It kept leaning and rubbing against me leaving only to chase of any fish it considered too threatening! I saw little else that dive but I was ok with that. The next day 5 miles Away I encountered that exact same grouper (he’s got a large scar on the left side below his eye) and he repeated his friendly follow me around! Wherever that grouper is these days I hope he’s well

I dove with a Goliath grouper in the Georgia Aquarium a few years back. You don't actually realize how big they are until you see them in person. Love this video!!!
They look very large in person!
The Georgia Aquarium is where I learned how big whale sharks are in person.
You don't realise how big Galiath fish are until they've been put against the size of a human. Great video again. Amazing work guys.

I am an avid fisherman but I love marine life too. And I would feel really bad if I accidentally caught that fish.
That was so much fun! Whenever we went to the Florida Aquarium, we would always stop by and say hello to our grouper friend there. How fun would it be to see a grouper in the wild once I get certified?! Have a good day! 🐠😁
I did a dive on the Castor last week.. the Goliath Groupers are always awesome to see. Diving again on the Castor in a few days!

It isn't unusual to see drysuits when the temperature is that cold. Sure the undergarments tend to be rather thin, but it is still cold for us.
Ahah never heard people call them dry suits. We call them wetsuits in australia

I always thought it was a Yiddish word, but apparently it is originally from the German "sleppen." But anyway, I agree....fun word! We always say that in diving..."Time to schlepp the gear!"

XD When I, a WA state resident, visited family in Florida, I too was disappointed to have travelled across the entire country only to be greeted by my home state's default weather. Ah, well, at least it doesn't matter when you're under water, eh?

I actually dove with Dave before lol. We happened to be on the same boat from Walkers dive charter in west palm beach last summer. Its awesome to see familiar faces on the show haha.

I remember seeing my first Goliath grouper. I was diving and was looking under a reef at this shelf…. It was a very large shelf…. Then, the shelf moved. The entire shelf I was looking at was actually a fish!

Yes, It's because we crank the red channel to bring out the color and it can make the blue a little magenta.

Jonathan do u know any grouper species in the Red Sea? Cause when I was shore diving Jeddah I once saw a huge reef grouper and it had somewhat the same coloration as Wilbur
