  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Rush | Tom Sawyer | Live At Sarsock Festival |Ken Tamplin
It's pretty incredible to look at the music that was made by a band made up of just 3 members but Rush was able to build a legendary career with their small core group.
This Canadian band formed back in 1968 and got their early sound from the influences of Led Zeppelin and Cream. They got their first gig playing a coffee shop called the "Coff-In".
Most of the lyrics to Rush's songs were written by drummer Neil Peart and the band's longest song was called "2112". It was made up of seven parts and was 20 minutes and 33 seconds long.
The band has gone on to put out 24 gold, 14 platinum, and 3 multi-platinum albums and have been nominated for 7 Grammys. In 1994 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they continued to tour up until 2015.
I'll be reacting to a performance of "Tom Sawyer"from the band's highest selling album Moving Pictures. The tune is one of their most popular songs and lead singer Geddy Lee called it the band's "defining piece of music ... from the early '80s".
I hope you all enjoy the video and please let me know what you thought about their performance.

@@robertfling6173 yeah, I thought his bass had a bit of a harsh edge to the tone until he added those fabric softener sheets. It just smoothed that tone right out, and also added a pleasant fragrance coming off the stage. He had a very, very dry sound to the bass. Those dryers also added a bit of a tumbling, sweeping phase, like Leslie cabinets of old.

After they started plugging their instruments straight into the PA, Alex continued to keep his big stack of amps behind him just for authenticity or something, so Geddy decided "If Alex can have a bunch of useless equipment behind him while he plays, why can't I?". And thus, the washing machines served as this useless equipment during Vapor Trails and R30. IIRC, there's even a vending machine on the R30 DVD.

My all time favourite band - they have been with me since I was 13 and I am now 53. Some songs remind me of happy times and others of darker times. They are all master musicians and they all played without ego - for each other first and foremost and for the fans. Every show I attended was jam packed with songs - no warm up act - started on time - played like their lives depended on it. On their last tour Neil felt he was getting to the point that he couldn’t keep up to his standards of performance. Being Neil he couldn’t accept anything other than his best. He hated the adulation and the rock star thing but he also had a fierce commitment to giving the fans everything they paid for (and more). And yes - they aren’t showy - they are down to earth Canadians. For me, the music of my life. They have an irreplaceable place in my heart and soul.

It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on
Tuesday (January 7, 2020) our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma). We ask that friends, fans and media alike understandably respect the family's need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time. Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil's name.
      Rest in peace brother

I was the afternoon DJ at a radio station in Tampa Florida when Rush was brand new. I would get calls all the time asking me if this was Led Zeppelin. It sounds kinda funny now, but back then, their music really blew people away because the sound was such a nuance. My program director altered the play schedule to allow for airplay of the longer Rush songs, which was almost unheard of back then.

Rush is from Canada. Geddy Lee plays guitar with peddles and keyboard and sings. I don’t know how three guys make such great music together. Geddy is awesome. All three were masters of the instruments they played. Lifeson on guitar and Peart on drums. He built that set. All together they were awesome. Washing machines in the background. I have always been in awe of this group. Only 3 people in this band, and all that music coming from 3 people. Geddy Lee has the most unusual voice, and one of the best voices. They are so talented. And I watched a recent interview with Geddy Lee, about going back on tour. He said probably not, as the drummer is getting arthritis in his hands, understandably. But yes they are unassuming. Favorite line of all time, from Freewill. "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." Classic.

The first tour I saw Rush live was on their Permanent Waves tour. That was in 1980 and Geddy’s side of the stage had a wall of Ampeg SVT speaker cabinets. The SVT cabinets have eight 10” speakers, so they are one of the largest speaker cabinets of any single instrument (forward sound systems can have much larger speakers).
He was still using the SVT cab for Moving Pictures and I believe Signals, but somewhere around GUP or PW Geddy began plugging directly into the main mixing board. He was no longer using stage amps, so his side would just be blank, while Alex was still using amps, from Marshalls, to Hiwatts, Gallien Kruegers, Mesas, Hughes & Kettners to his own brand Lerxsts, usually stacking up several cabinets with four 12” speakers, creating a wall behind him.
That was just rock and roll from the 70s and 80s; walls of amps and cabinets stacked heigh at the back of the stage. Technology would eventually render that useless for getting the best sound, giving the producers and engineers at the board more control over the sound. It may have sounded better, but it didn’t look as cool. Alex continued to stack up amps, most of which were dummies with the only thing working in them was the pilot light.
Geddy could have had a bunch of fake cabinets and amp heads made to make the curtain behind him, ok,e a lot of groups did, it that’s not the Canadian way. He wanted something comical, so the dryer stack was born. On later tours the dryers changed to rotisserie ovens, comp, etc with chickens inside and chefs periodically checking them. They were also snack vending machines on one tour. The entire backdrop became a huge steam punk time machine for the aptly names Time Machine tour.
Their final tour saw them finally have fake amp and cabinet props made.... many of them. The concert began with enormous walls of cabinets and amps, but as the show progressed, stage hands would periodically come and remove some of the amps and speakers and swap out amps for older models. The wall would continue to shrink as the stage did. The actual size of the stage, or amount of it Alex and Geddy used continued to diminish as the amp technology continued to age and get smaller, until the backdrop displayed a basket ball hoop and lockers, giving the illusion of a gymnasium.
By the show’s end, Rush was playing their earliest music, in a gym, with small little amps. Possibly the models they used in their humble beginning.

I used to cover this tune with a band I was in, aside from the vocals being challenging.. You're correct to mention the absolutely monstrous sound they made as a 3 piece. Our drummer loved the fills after the guitar solo and always had the biggest grin across his face during that part, I'd transposed those melodic keyboard parts for guitar, did the best I could at a note for note interpretation of the solo and we had two guitarists underneath it all. Tough, tough music to play convincingly! Gives you a unique perspective when you're in the middle of it all. These guys were totally natural and genuinely all at a masterful level with their respective crafts/instruments! An inspirational amount of talent in that band. ✌️. Greetings from the UK!

This just happened to me a few days ago with someone I just met. While talking about our favorite bands , whenever I say Rush is my favorite , it's always the same if they're not fans , and that's " You know Rush is great , killer drummer , but I just don't like the singer man . I can't handle him. " Great drummer though. My response is usually the same , " It's pronounced Peert , and I love Geddys' voice. To be honest , at first , I too was taken aback by his voice , but I found the music so good that after a while I got it and very quickly felt Rush would not be the same without his vocals , besides all of his other talents. Geddy is incredible.

One of my all time favorite songs. Neil Perte was the one who inspired me to become a drummer in the 70's. They are amazing for only 3 people on the stage. I was fortunate to see them live in the 80's and during this song the volume went up so high people were turning their backs because they force of the music going through our bodies. They went just a little too high for a small arena that only held 18k people. A concert I will never forget.

For the best of Rush live anyways, listen to Exit Stage Left from Montreal, 1981, it's a true gem.
Different Stages is also quiet good, and there's some great bootleg footage on YT from this show, i.e., The Pass, Nobody's Hero, Bravado etc. For Studio albums, give all of Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, and Grace Under Pressure a listen. And do you yourself a favor and read the lyrics; Neil Peart (likely Rock's most respected drummer) doubles as lyricist. The Professor is the likely most thought provoking and philosophical mind in Rock's history. The man has an insatiable appetite for reading and it's been said that he's read 20,000 + books over his life while on the road. He deserves your ear:) Enjoy!!
