I saw Charlie play live in the early 90's with The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. I saw the bass amp and guitar amp on stage, but I could only see Charlie playing guitar. I thought maybe the bassist was stage-shy and was off stage somewhere, so I followed the cable from the bass amp to see where it lead. My jaw hit the floor when I saw it and the guitar amp cable both going into Charlie's guitar. It still boggles my mind today how he does it.
Love Charlie breakdown in one of his lessons overt chops vs covert chops and how we as a society value overt chops like shredding, but he’s more interested in covert chops like being in time and having the parts all work together. Great example of those covert chops in his vid.
Charlie, Broun Fellinis, Slide Five, Dave Ellis, Alphabet Soup...those were the days of the 90s Bay Area (acid) jazz scene. A perfect foil to the thrash funk (Primus, FNM, etc) bands that were also popular around that same time.
There is soooooooo much quality material from the dozens of Charlie’s projects that he’s been in. He is unreal and to see him live and his peaks and valleys and something one won’t forget.
I too learned about him that way. That’s an awesome mini-doc. Blew my mind how he did bass and guitar at the same time. This is a whole different level.
Love it man! I've been a Charlie fan since the 90s thanks to Les Claypool producing his first album. Just picked him up again recently and been obsessed all over again. Such a man of power! Thanks for the vid!
Saw Charlie opening for SCI back in '98. As I watched him from a bit back from the stage I thought, "Whoa, these are stronger than I expected,... his guitar neck is melting before my eyes!" 🍄🍄🍄😁🤩😆😆😆
My intro to Charlie was back in the early 2000s with a video of his life performance “recess”. Charlie is a beast and I’m relieved that you are also a huge fan! This song is my favorite of his and is one of many amazing tracks on his album with Scott Amendola. Charlie is also a sick drummer as well. Thank you for this!
Had a chance to see Charlie and Scott (on drums) while they were touring this record in 2013 in Roanoke, VA. Seeing this in person was so magical for me. I'm so glad this channel digs CH.
Thanks for sharing this one. This is the kind of experience where you feel the more you want to go into music, the less you know, rather sitting like an amazed kid.
My first introduction to Charlie Hunter was when I was listening to my Greyboy Allstars station on pandora years ago, and I heard the song Funky Niblets off of the first album of The Charlie Hunter Trio. It had me hooked immediately. He does this really amazing chordal thing with a chorus effect in the middle of the song that sounds so eclectic and jazzy.
This is truly incredible! Thanks for the introduction to Charlie, Michael. I'd love to see you have a look at The Milk Carton Kids one day. I'll never forget the day I first heard the song Michigan, driving through the Utah hills on a climbing trip with my forever girl. The solo at the end seemed to go on forever and we just kept driving with seemingly no destination - just everything else in the rear view mirror. I later saw them at our small-town folk fest in Canmore, Alberta - a once in a lifetime experience for me.
Hey Mike, you made me discover this guy, yesterday I think, and I spent the day drowning in UA-cam watching and listening C Hunter videos. This guys is crazy good, groovy, funny and more. Thanks again. So cool to discover new permanent smile inspiration 😉
I learned about Charlie Hunter when I was in college circa 2001. I saw him at the Handlebar in Greenville, SC, and was blown away. Been a fan ever since. Recently saw him a few years back at Pisgah Brewery in Black Mountain, NC. There's no one like him-- one of the most talented, and most unique musicians of this generation. Super cool that you featured him!
Hi Michael, I'm a new fan of your channel. I don't play the guitar, all though my youngest son does play lead in a band. It was your..I guess..Charisma that held my attention. I love to watch you explain the different ways artists play, & sing. I know it sounds corny.. I just finished watching your vid of Bill Withers " I cant' write left handed", & that song touched me deeply. I've been a Withers fan forever, but had never heard that song. Keep up the GOOD work, You make my day.. You have a good soul. God Bless You & Yours.. ;-)
I've loved Charlies' stuff since the 90s and he just happened to move to my town so I can see him often at the Flat Iron. He's always friendly and relaxed and SO helpful to the local jazz scene arranging things with the local college students. He did Bitches Brew in its entirety with all local kids and it was amazing.
Thank you for covering Charlie. I really enjoy your videos but this, to me, shows you “get it” because Charlie is amazing. I was lucky enough to see him and Scott live a couple of years ago at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle. I was front row and just in awe the entire show.
@@Guitargate please listen to Jimmy Vaughn Robert cray thrill is gone there riffs are amazing on it and also bb king and Eric Clapton is setting along as well it's a win win
Saw him live in a trio format (with saxophone) back in the late 90s and it blew my mind. His 8 string instrument, had two separate output jacks and chords running to two different amps, one for pickups under his 3 bass strings and the other from his 5 guitar strings. He got this look on his face of immense concentration that made me think his head was gonna explode. But instead of his head, it was mine that blew up. So good.
Nice video mate enjoy the channel 👍I came across Charlie after John Mayer gave him praise and you can hear the influence when he plays some funky stuff... I caught some of his IG live with two other guys which is a good watch for anyone looking to kill a few hours
Hey Micheal Thanks for the Charlie Hunter education. Gonna put focus to my new project. On Babbon Strength there is a track called Difford Tilbrook must be a nod to Squeeze as that their two front men vocalist names .Great stuff.
Thanks Michael! So cool to see a player and teacher of your caliber sharing your love for Charlie Hunter (And Scott Amendola!). I've been lucky enough to be a fan since the days of James T. Kirk. (aka TJ Kirk). For some filthy deconstructed grooves of twisted genius try to track down those TJ Kirk recordings (Charlie, Scott, Will Bernard and John Schott. All four brilliant)
I first come across Charlie from the In Repair sessions he recorded with John Mayer. You'd think that bass + guitar would be gimmicky but it sounds beautiful
I saw Charlie at the Elbow Room in San Francisco several times in the 90s - 2000s - tiny place - incredible shows. I had never seen anything like it. He's on another level.
Saw him in Nashville many years ago. Jeff Coffin, the horn player for Dave Mathews and Bela Fleck, sat in on a song or two. Jeff sits down and asks what they would play. Charlie names a song. Then says "It's a 13 bar Blues in F. You'll totally get it." He then starts off the song and Jeff picks it up quickly. One of the greatest moments in live music I've ever witnessed.
Like 20 years ago, I saw a show in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois (I think it was at the Canopy Club?) that featured Charlie Hunter, Norah Jones right before she hit it big, and Keller Williams. The three of them together made for an absolutely incredible night.
Got to see Charlie Hunter trio play in a small bar in Bellingham Washington. It was so awesome! I was super bummed when my ride his girlfriend got into a fight and demanded that we leave early. I was in a cast for the broken foot and abided by the forever wished I would’ve got an Uber!!
Saw him live a few years back. I hadn't heard of him, a friend said I should go. I swear at times if I closed my eyes I would have thought it was John Scofield and Jaco on stage.
Dayum that is great! It reminds me of a story my brother told me. He went backstage for a Mofro concert. He asked JJ Grey how they made their music sound so GOOD. He said "it's easy, you make it as simple as possible, then you make it even simpler." Take something complex and boil it down to it's simplest form.
