@@TheRycooder I'm curious too. I'm waiting for a 502 I ordered a few days ago and it is quite cheaper, but as far as I know the differences are in the pick ups and the name brand bridge on the 820CR.
Love my Yamaha Revstar RS620 in Burnt Charcoal. The color looks even better and it sounds a little more aggressive compared to the RS820. These guitars are awesome for the money.
yeah the 620 has inlays on the neck...they look better than the more expensive model which has dots? !! and there's barely any difference in the sound...I'm going 620 over the 820
I know this video is old, but man every time I search something on here and see your name, you bet your sweet arse it's the first vid I'm clicking. You are excellent at this review thing. Thanks a ton
Naw, it's the P-90's, friend! Plus, the ability to get the effect of "single-coil"-ing a P-90 pup (already single-coil) is pretty darned open-world, if you ask me.
Revstars seem really good and not terribly expensive (around a grand USD). I'm not sure why more guitar makers don't include a low cut. I can only think of the Les Paul Standard and most Reverend guitars for managing bass frequencies on the guitar itself. I've been looking for a good mod that will help me achieve this on a standard Strat, but I haven't found anything good and simple yet. Thank you for the demo.
I got that 820CR. I first tested the RS620 and was really pleased with tones, comfort, perfect build, but did not like the translucent green. I then tested the 820CR, same quality tones, comfort, build plus superb finish. More solid bridge/tailpiece strengthen the clean tones, and those Yamaha Humbucker with Alnico 5 magnets are very versatile, I really dig them, as demoed in this vid. I like those tones at start, makes me think of some Who tones in Quadrophenia and Tommy , noticeably Pinball Wizard.
I love your clear and concise demo´s Brett, this again sounds so sweet in your capable hands. It is because of your demo of the St Vincent that I currently have one on order, man you made yours sing! Some people have just ´got it ´ and you are surely one. Only complaint, vids could be longer and with more chat as you have such a lot to say. Regards.
Thanks, Christopher. I thought people preferred me to talk less, not more... or not at all! I can never win. However, your point is noted and I'll shoot a couple of lengthier vids in the near future to see how they fare. Thanks for the comment and rock on!
Many a reviewer have little to say but that does not apply to you, your wealth of experience shines through. I don't want to appear too much of a fan boy, I am 64 by the way, but I know what I like and you can supply it. Continued success!
Plus 1 for that! Like Shane (in the blues) you hang experience and info on a hook so well (compared to some of the novices and braggers out there) so therefore anything you talk about or elaborate on is very helpful to us 'seekers' thankyou.
Agree, alot of vloggers ramble and repeat, some barely demo while Brett has a focus on what matters, does not BS. I appreciate his ability to showcase each piece but hearing the gear played, more than talked about, speaks volumes.
Thank you Brett. Good demo, especially the clean tones running through a few time based effects. In my opinion, that is a job that sets most low-mid priced H/H guitars apart and the Yamaha did quite well. Both the 620CR and the 820CRs have moved up on my short list.
Thanks for your demo's. I've noticed this guitar also enters into the old SG territory (Yamaha SG series) especially with the nice staccato type attack. Well played again!
:40 mark the guitar came ALIVE! AND again at 1:28, 6:33 etc. lol, love it! Its on my list to have a Revstar one day. I think its one of the best guitars at any price, even when compared to guitars many thousands of dollars more than this beauty! Thanks for posting 👍.
Definitely the best quality stock guitar for your buck, the thing has yet to reach its real potential in the limelight. It is an even better sounding guitar for overdriven effects, I put my ocean 11/canyon pedals on a brown channel and holy psych fury!
What the hell? I just checked your channel. Do you really write these songs yourself? Come on... You're supposed to be spending time going to malls with friends or hiding cigarettes away from your parents.
nice demo, brett. i got the 520 with P90's last year. very solid guitar for the money. i like the sound of the humbuckers on this model. yamaha did a pretty good job with these, i reckon.
I imagine you're looking forward to trying the new Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer. Besides the Nu Tube, it has a few enhancements such as accepting 18 volts DC and a clean mix knob.
Surprising to hear all the guitar testers loving these Yamahas and still, it is a rare guitar to be seen around. It has probably something to do with the fact that it's not made in USA (like Fenders and Gibsons). It's a kind of sleeper.
I have a 502T, and I agree with every thing you say about the Revstar. An outstanding guitar, plays and sounds like a guitar costing 2 to 3 times as much. Quality cannot be faulted.
There is a little arrow straight across from the title that gives you info in case you didn't know. Judging by the questions a lot of you don't know about it.
Great demo.. thank you. I got the 820CR BB (Brushed Black) on order Do you happen to know if the same hardware/pickups as the Rust Rat one you're playing here? Just wish it had the locking tuners you find on the 720B. Tried to see if I could order them from Yamaha but they don't sell them. not sure I wanna swap them out on my 720B, I'm sure the Bigsby bridge needs them more lol
In case your conidering a Revstar, my 502T came from the factory with sharp frets. Yamaha Australia authorised a repair through their luthier network. The luthier turned my meticulously maintained 502T into a RELIC - File marks all across the fretboard, discolored my ivory binding (blackened it) and also left cracks along the binding. Yamaha's national service manager (AU) , Drew Morrow, was indifferent and basically told me to suck it up. Will never recommend or buy Yamaha instruments again. Their warranty counts for nothing, and management staff treat you with contempt, forever using rhetoric to evade their obligations.
Hi brett! Happy new year :) Do you think you will do a video about a new pedalboard with a lot of pedals for 2018 ??? It would be great!! Thanks for your videos !
Could you please let us know the audio path, amp/efx. thanks.. to my ears the amp is giving you the tone and character.. I guess you are using a THR 10 ...wich is not exactly a colorless sounding box.
I've played a few of these models and overall like them, but one thing was a little weird: on the satin-finished models, the necks are still glossy. ??? Seems backwards.
I've heard only good things about the Revstar series RS502 and above. Superb quality and great sound. I've been looking at some Gibson options as well but their price and mixed reviews in terms of quality are pretty discouraging.
Replicant a, when I get a guitar with a glossy neck I rub the back of the neck with some 0000 steel wool and it takes away the gloss and stickiness. Afterwards you can always buff it back to gloss if you want.
I wanted to like this guitar but I don't. Brett as usual gets it to sound better than most who demo guitars but I just don't like the sound of these pickups. Otherwise seems like a nice axe. It reminds me sound wise of a cheap Ephiphone SG special which I bought and switched out the pick ups for a Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded set, but this Yamaha is better built and quality in the workmanship and parts. I need to find a demo of someone who has swapped out the pickups in one of these. Cheers.
I got this guitar 3days ago. This is one of the greatest guitar in a decade or something.
Did you try this over the 502 with the P90's and if so what made you choose this one. Thank you in advance for your response.

Love the sound and look of the revstar.
The dry switch almost transforms the pickups into P90s. Beautiful sound! Saving for one of these.

One of my students just picked up the P90 incarnation of this axe and it's great.
According to Yamaha the 502T is the best seller in the lineup. Must be the tail piece.

Brett I can never take your reviews seriously. Your tone is always so good that I don’t know how to match it with the same gear.
Very well-played and a cool guy. I like seeing a real pro do a demo.
thanks for the demo it sounds really good

I think the 820 has a tonepros bridge and different pickups.
Thx for yuor answer.
Does the guitar come with the TonePros AVT wrench?
Pieter Jordaan it comes with the AVT-II bridge
Chris Alegria yes I know but is the wrench you use to adjust the bridge included when you buy this guitar

Not even close. It's a classic rock and jazz guitar with medium output vintage style pickups.
Brian Peter Thanks man. Do you think you could at least get away with harder rock, like guns n roses with it it? Maybe with a certain pedal?
Yep, G'n'R is no problem. Basically the revstar is like a Les Paul, anything you can do with a LP the Revstar can do just as well.
