    Just got my Great Great Grandfather's Drawknife, and I'm so excited to use it. My Grandma said that it could easily be 150 yrs plus old. Thanks for the video,I've learned a lot so far from this.😊

      Just picked up a drawknife, chinacon type but it works, keeping it sharp helps, I got curved drawknife also but it does not work so well on bigger logs, no place to put hands, but I’m sure it will work great on spindlwood and smaller railings, etc,Americans need start making them so we don’t have to buy chinacon stuff, the German stuff is nice but way over priced, google it and u will see,,.

    Is that a bevel up or bevel down draw knife?

    That looks like a quality draw knife. Did you happen to forge it yourself? I can't seem to find a new or vintage one with a blade like that. I'm guessing the blade is 3-4" wide and 12" long. The weight of it seems to help you pull through the bark. Nicely done!

      Erichilli The draw knife is made by Barr Specialty Tools- 12" cutting edge - 3/8" x 3" x 22"
      barrtools.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BT&Product_Code=DKL&Category_Code=DK
      It's been the most effective knife I've used or seen. The steel he uses holds an edge for a long time, too.
      Thank you,
      James

      Mountain Borne Aah. In the video; when you mentioned that it was a "Barr" drawknife; I thought you were referencing that it was a metal "bar" type design. Thanks for the explanation and link.

    This is a good draw knife....nice deep cutting blade eg 2 inches so can get maximum contact with wood surface for maximum stability, correct meaning it simulates a wood plane, correct ? A low bevel angle of 16 degrees works best for removing bark ? What is the maker’s name ? Is it readily available ? What about the curved swedish draw knife which has handles almost parallel to the blade ?

      This is from a reply to a comment with basically the same question, "The draw knife is made by Barr Specialty Tools- 12" cutting edge - 3/8" x 3" x 22" They may still have it on their website with a price... Interesting thoughts on the Swedish, not sure.

    Nice vid. I'm shopping for a drawknife right now and was curious> Would a smaller drawknife be easier to handle on smaller logs or would it matter? (logs i got are bout half the diameter of those in this video, and smaller)

      +Zach Bagby Hey Zach, you should do great with smaller knife. Good way to learn technique.

    Hey what is the length size of your drawknife blade, only blad size in length and in width.
    Actually I need 10" thick blade, in straight line no concave shape. For making cricket 🏏 bat.

    And you dont pull sideways on the knife as you pull. Obviously you haven't done this that much

      I was thinking the same thing. Lol. I look at him an think a hippie pothead left the city with a DVD copy of Jeremiah Johnson. Must be a doctor too. I've never wore gloves when working logs, but hey too each his I guess. Must be Colorado small trees. Bit different here in northwest Idaho an Montana. Enjoy the day.

    • @jamies5494
      @jamies5494 Рік тому +2

      Adding a slant to the pull makes it so that the blade wears more evenly and doesn't depend on blunt force, but rather technique (similar to that of basic principle- slicing with a kitchen knife, to take advantage of a full blade).

      What is the best readily draw for removing bark ? Do you like the swedish draw knife type which has handles nearly parallel to blade ?

    • @CombatPerspective
      @CombatPerspective 3 роки тому

      @@DRJMF1 we have custom made draw knifes. The handles need to be roughly 20 to 30 percent angle up from your blade. How you sharpen it matters the angle of the bevel and edge are very important.
