A Shave Horse from One Log
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 вер 2024
- In this episode I take a walk into the past. We examine how using a simple 6' log and yield an invaluable homestead tool called a shave horse. A shave horse is a foot operated vise that is used to hold lumber in place so the user can carve it using a drawknife or spokeshave. This practice was common on the frontier and homesteads up until the early 1900's.
Enjoy!

Love this video. Im an engineer and this is is beautiful. This is what our country was founded on.
Thanks, will attempt next week.
Heartfelt appreciation for creation and upload.
Again thanks,
from Cornwall.
(next to England.)
Now this is what youtube is all about in my book. Watch people make things and proud of there accomplishments. Thumbs Up. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Best one I have ever seen.!
Great job nice !!
Superb shaving horse. Nicely build without industrial lumber.
Love this video, Dan. Please grind away the steel that has mushroomed passed the edge of that splitting edge. From personal experience, they will break away and lodge in hands, arms, legs and eyes.
Amen! I would have mentioned the same.
Yeah, had one sharp edge/flake just poke thru glove and at first it didn't register that my palm is bleeding.
I'd even suggest to use wooden mauls for some of the wedge work to limit mushrooming. The wedges are less effective that way. My brother used a 16 lb sledge on one my dad had and that wedge was almost useless it was out of shape so bad.
i got a nice scar on my belly precisely because of this.
True!
As soon as I've made a froe I'm onto the maul and gluts then this 👍
Your a remarkable guy! My son and I made an English style this fall so We know it’s harder then it looks to build one. Thank you.
Thank you very much Sir 🎉
Look at the cute little hatchet- love it.
May I suggest that you make the footplate about a foot longer. It would allow you to keep your legs in a much more comfortable position, as well as give you more pressure on the piece of wood that you are working on. It will also allow you to open and close the jaws easier and with more control. I used one of these for decades.
Thank you.
Fun fact after watching a few of you videos i started at your first video and am determined to watch all the way to presemt.
Nice build. I did bookmark it for future referance. Happy Holidays to you, your family, Dan and everyone else who has been watching this video.
Nice job!
very well done !!!! besides the shave horse you got yourself alot of tinder for starting fires from all the shavings and off cuts from the project
Well done
Great build, Dan. Now if I can only find a source for a drawknife and spokeshave. Oh, and learn to sharpen them. I will have to show my wife your video so she knows what I mean by shavehorse.
Love the video Dan, so relaxing watching the build, absolutely love the music! Really chilled out.
How many times do I have to come back and thumbs up this awesome video??
This is the third time !
UA-cam stop 🛑 being so lame
YES! now THAT is CoalCracker Bushcraft! Thank you Dan.
Nice Work Looks better than one u can buy in a store 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
excellent work my friend. invaluable in the woods.
Now to finish that canoe paddle for this springs canoeing season. Fun project.
Awesome! I have some rock hard old telephone poles in the yard and want to make a shave horse and a carving bench from them. Possibly a pole lathe too. Projects, projects...always another project waiting! 😃👍
Very nice horse..beautiful legs. Good work
Красавчик мужик всё в ручную изготовил
great job!
I enjoyed your video. I made my shaving horse about twenty years ago and have used it a lot. As a matter of fact my back to legs have since broken off. I just place the stump that I rive and ax hew and trim with under the back at the seat end. Works great!
Great vid. Love the hand tool tutorials. I made a few of these in the past. Started with four legs but found three work better and stand most anywhere. Two in back, one in front. Give the foot lever enough room up front. Just a suggestion.
Great job! That looked like a ton of work
This is awesome dude! Excellent craftmanship!
Great Build, Pap would be so proud of you
Great tutorial, Dan! Dick Proenneke is giving a thumbs up for sure!
So much character. I love it
Cool video format with the music playing as you worked...I like it.

Very cool. I am going to make one.
I’ve always wanted to try making one of these. I’ll need more tools haha

KCB/ UK 🇬🇧
Nice job . Good video.
Nice!
Yo the mini axe is awesome!!!! Your work in All your videos is great, I'm glad I've found your channel.
3:56 music syncs to the work. That was awesome!
Amazing ! Great video ! Might I suggest you grind off the ragged edges of your metal wedges. I was in a shop one time & the mechanic was pounding on a punch w/ragged edges and a piece flew off & became embedded in his cheek. Merry Xmas !!
Maybe he ain't got grinder
I was thinking about using my draw knife!
Great video Dan. Thanks and take care. Merry Christmas.
Nice work
Awesome video
Good video! Makes me want to make another bow!
Great job !
Well done 👍🏻👍🏻. 🇺🇸😎
Impressive as hell!!
Excellent!
Great video but be careful hitting metal on metal. A shard could break off and puncture you. Been there, done that. The doc said that a couple of inches to the side and I would have bled out.
Dan you know I’m late to your party but this is one of the best videos you have produced. Last week at my camp I split a log just like that. I noted by your gait when carrying it back that it was heavy. Those splits are in my garage now waiting for a project. The shave horse might be it. I have every tool you used EXCEPT the handle for the auger you used to make the holes for the legs. Now I know what to make. This is such a great video. It made me imagine how hard our homesteaders worked every day.
If you get the time, I’d really appreciate knowing the name of the second tune. Who doesn’t love hearing fingers sliding on the neck like that? Hey, maybe I can sound hound it.
Yeah man! Jincheng Zhang, Detect I Love You. And the first tune is too.! Man I confess, had I seen the name of the artist first I sure wouldn’t have seen that sound coming. That’s on me. Nice playlist Dan!!
muy pero ke muy practico. esto es para gente sin recursos como yo. lo voy a hacer.
Greetings, good video. Thanks for the share. pax,
great job, Thanks for sharing
Damn, SIR that was perfect 👍🏻👍🏻
Cool video
Merci pour ce moment, un réel plaisir a te regarder faire avec si peu de moyen. Reposant et instructif a la foi, bravo et merci encore.
inspirational,thanks for sharing
Exactly like Roy Underhill build for his book, the Woodwrights shop.
That was very cool to see. I want to build one of these for my dad to use. Splitting that log into a more or less plank for the bench was really impressive. I didn't know it was possible to get a log to split that cleanly. Sure saves a lot of time with the hatchet or adze. Well done!
DAN THIS VIDEO BROUGHT BACK FOND MEMORIES OF BACK WHEN I WAS IN MY PRIME. YOU SHOULD HAVE ADDED SOME VERBAGE OF HOW THIS WAS A NO SWEAT TASK. HA! IT TAKES VERY HARD WORK TO MAKE ONE USING OLD SCHOOL TOOLS . WHEN I BUILT MINE I EVEN HAD A FOOT ADZE AND A BROARD AXE TO SMOOTH THINGS OUT A BIT. I COMMEND YOU ON YOUR HARD WORK AND MAKING A EXCELLENT VIDEO.
Cool!!
Real handy for u!!
Interesting felling technique...I think traditionally the notch was chopped out and the backcut was sawn.
I need to re-haft and resharpen my adze...
Pretty snifty pal ! Yessir 🙂
Awesome job on the horse, loving these style vids 🐻👍🏼
6:55 TINY AXE! so cute :3
AYellowPepper I want one. Where on earth did he get that.
Great job with the shave horse Dan. 😊 Hope ya'll are enjoying the beautiful weather. It's been nice here in SW North Dakota too. ☀️🌬
Nice
Wow brother! Amazing build sir. Great music choice too. Merry Christmas!
