A Shave Horse from One Log

  • In this episode I take a walk into the past. We examine how using a simple 6' log and yield an invaluable homestead tool called a shave horse. A shave horse is a foot operated vise that is used to hold lumber in place so the user can carve it using a drawknife or spokeshave. This practice was common on the frontier and homesteads up until the early 1900's.
    Enjoy!

Love this video, Dan. Please grind away the steel that has mushroomed passed the edge of that splitting edge. From personal experience, they will break away and lodge in hands, arms, legs and eyes.

I'd even suggest to use wooden mauls for some of the wedge work to limit mushrooming. The wedges are less effective that way. My brother used a 16 lb sledge on one my dad had and that wedge was almost useless it was out of shape so bad.

May I suggest that you make the footplate about a foot longer. It would allow you to keep your legs in a much more comfortable position, as well as give you more pressure on the piece of wood that you are working on. It will also allow you to open and close the jaws easier and with more control. I used one of these for decades.

Great vid. Love the hand tool tutorials. I made a few of these in the past. Started with four legs but found three work better and stand most anywhere. Two in back, one in front. Give the foot lever enough room up front. Just a suggestion.

Dan you know I’m late to your party but this is one of the best videos you have produced. Last week at my camp I split a log just like that. I noted by your gait when carrying it back that it was heavy. Those splits are in my garage now waiting for a project. The shave horse might be it. I have every tool you used EXCEPT the handle for the auger you used to make the holes for the legs. Now I know what to make. This is such a great video. It made me imagine how hard our homesteaders worked every day.
If you get the time, I’d really appreciate knowing the name of the second tune. Who doesn’t love hearing fingers sliding on the neck like that? Hey, maybe I can sound hound it.
Yeah man! Jincheng Zhang, Detect I Love You. And the first tune is too.! Man I confess, had I seen the name of the artist first I sure wouldn’t have seen that sound coming. That’s on me. Nice playlist Dan!!
