Remember that "Scylla" has a cost. He knew she was going to kill six of the crew. In the original they escaped because all six of her mouths were full.

And worse--all the crew had beeswax in their ears. Only Ody was focusing on the siren telling him about Scylla. He knew Scylla was coming, but the crew didn't.

I don’t think Odysseus’s face is one of “oh wow this wasn’t supposed to happen”. I think it’s more of “I don’t want to do this, but it must be done”. He knew what the cost of going through there was. That’s why he told Eury to light up 6 torches. He’s still struggling with fully becoming the monster at this moment

That's absolutely true to the source. In the Odyssey, he made the choice to pass through Scylla's territory as the least bad option-- but he *knew* that it would cost him six men. Here, too, he *knew* that six of his men would be devoured, a grim toll to pay.

    First chant: SIREN SONG
    Second: SCYLLA THROAT
Also, scylla only killed SIX men. And scylla had 6 heads. And oddy told eury to hand out 6 torches...

Jay brought up the fact that people mis-hear Ody's line, it's actually "Row for your lives". During Suffering the entire crew had wax in their ears, I believe they had no clue they were going into Scylla's lair. As others pointed out, Ody says to light up six torches, those who had torches are eaten; in other animatics Eury is a torch holder but his torch is either handed off or he drops it and someone else picks it up. Yes Ody knew he'd have to sacrifice 6 men.

The lyric "Die in the blood where you bathe" is probably a reference to the original Scylla myth, where she was transformed into this monster by a poison that was poured into the water she was bathing in. Different versions of the myth blame the poisoning on different people, but the version Jorge is most likely going with says that it was actually CIRCE who did it

  • @colt1903

In the "canon" animatic from Jorge's Livestreams, Ody's reaction is largely similar to this one. He's not angry or distraught at all. He just turns to Eury, stares for a few seconds, and turns away again without saying anything or showing much emotion at all. Largely stoic and indifferent, maybe a bit of hidden exasperation like a "You're really bringing that up NOW, Eurylochus? After ALL THIS TIME?" That sort of thing.
Which makes sense. He's in Warrior of the Mind mode. He's shut off his heart for the moment, and he can't really afford to let himself be distracted by shit that's already long over and not important anymore, as harsh as it may sound. What matters is the now, and right now, he needs to make sure he and his men make it out of this alive with as little casualties as possible.
(I put "canon" in quotes cuz as much as I adore that particular moment in all it's simplicity, the fact remains that all the Livestream Animatics are ultimately subject to change. The reality is that at the end of the day all these songs are concept albums and nothing more. We're dealing with MAYBE 40% of what the final product will be after who knows how many additions, revisions, changes, and more. So that's why even though I really like a lot of what the "Canon" Animatics have to offer, I still need to remind everyone to take them always with a grain of salt.)

      @PencilKing21 3 дні тому +1

to be fair, "all this time" really only consists of however long they were sailing between the underworld & the sirens, and then between the sirens and scylla (also maybe between other ways + underworld if there is travel time between those two, but it isnt really clear how much time was between those two). He tried to tell him basically right after it happened, and then they were pretty preoccupied at most other points up till when he actually mentioned it.

"Do what I say, and you'll see them again (yes, sir!)" This is the first time that Odysseus' actions have contradicted that line in The Horse and the Infant, intentionally sacraficing 6 of the men who trusted him with their lives and safety.

An excellent point! When I hear this song, I always think Odysseus is struggling with what he knows needs to happen and running through his head "what if, what if..." hence why he is so quiet, but when Eurylochus tells him he opened the bag (i.e. didn't listen, betrayed Odysseus and cost them so much time and so many lives) his mind is made up.

6 heads and 6 torches. Remember he knows that scylla has a price.
Scylla is quite sad. She was a nymph on circes island. Circe like a man but that man preferred scylla. So circe poisoned the water where scylla bathed, when scylla entered the water she was transformed into a monster with 6 eel like heads, and dogs between each neck.

    • @colt1903
      @colt1903 3 дні тому

@@ventusbruma1039 Yes, but when you consider that the "Canon" animatic has nothing to imply that, and even seems to serve to outright dissuade that thinking, THEN it feels dumb.
THEN you get to everything afterwards and it's not the behavior or sound of someone who is at all thinking "I wish it were you" and that's when it starts to feel brain dead.
The former is a careless lapse in attention.
The latter is just willful ignorance.

Imo there are two important things to keep in mind about Epic's Scylla, both from "Suffering". The Sirens told Odysseus that he must "go where Poseidon is too scared to roam" or something like that, implying that POSEIDON THE GOD OF THE SEA is scared of Scylla. The second is that Odysseus himself was ALSO scared of Scylla, saying "No. But Scylla has a cost" or something along those lines. Scylla is like a toll road, except the toll is human lives.

So: "Light up six torches." He lost six men-- the six who held the torches. He knew what would happen. By having six people who *were not him* hold torches, he knew that six would be lost, but none of them would be him. He's chosen the path of the monster. He's accepting that ruthlessness is mercy to ourselves.

    In Suffering:
    "But Scylla has a Cost."
    Scylla:
    "Eurelykas, light up 6 Torches."
    Scylla has 6 heads.
Im not entirely sure about the Myth, but i believe Scylla used to be one of Circes Nymphs. Poseidon wanted her, she refused and either he cursed her, or Circe gave her a Potion which turned her into that monster which not even a horny God will touch.

  • @icemagiciangh

Thoughts and fun facts- I love Ximena’s version. Her Scylla isn’t as intense, but I love how she portrayed Odysseus as still having a sliver of humanity left. He covered his ears, terrified and guilty of what was happening. In her No Longer You, she also puts Scylla in.
For the next song, I highly recommend Riley G’s version, and, with alternate animatics, I would love it. Probably my favorite version of Scylla is from VirusAP.
With “You’re quiet today”, I don’t think Odysseus told his men where they were going. They didn’t know about Scylla and “the cost” to pass through the lair and get home because they weren’t focused on that siren. You also talked about what Scylla might be. In the original story, she is one of Circe’s nymphs. A man Circe loved fell for Scylla instead of her, and Circe cursed Scylla for it, turning her into a monster. Circe actually references her romance before she turns the men back in There Are Other Ways. “I remember actions of passion. I have been in love once before.” I believe you can also faintly hear Circe’s instrument here.

Odysseus isn’t cocky. (He is, but)
Remember Suffering? "Is going where he’s scared to roam, through the lair of Scylla"
    "But Scylla has a cost"
He’s resigned. It was a decision as caption to pay the cost, losing a few men rather than all of them.
    Also, what she’s saying:
Drown in your sorrow and fears
Choke on your blood and your tears
Bleed til you've run out of years
We must do what it takes to survive
Give up your honor and faith

When Eury tried to confess in Puppeteer, Ody said "There's only so much left we can endure. Whatever you need to say can wait some more. Of that I'm sure." I think this could be read as he already figured out what Eury was trying to say (I mean, it's IMMEDIATELY after the destruction in Ruthlessness, so the confession could only be that), and didn't want to face it in that moment. So he might not have been surprised in this song if he figured it out before. I go back and forth with whether I believe that, but it's one valid interpretation.

Scylla was cursed by Circe after the man she loved wanted Scylla rather than her. She poured a potion into where Scylla bathed and transformed her into a monster.
Circe actually mentions this in her final song. Saying that she was “ In love once before. “

Scylla used to be a Nymph until she was mutated by Circe into what we see her now
    “Something approaches”
    “But Scylla has a cost.”
Eurylacus and 42 crew members had no idea where they were heading except Odysseus who knew that Scylla had a cost 6 heads, 6 torches, and 6 men it was a necessary evil to save 36 men or else Scylla would have killed all of them
Scylla cannot be so easily defeated but she can be managed
Fun fact: the creator had Scylla VA sing her lines six times to show all six of her heads are singing at the same time
What Odysseus actually said: Row for your lives!
What people heard: Run for your lives
This is actually the most tame design of Scylla
    Scyllas line-
    Deep down
    Deep down
    Deep down
You hide a reason for shame
    Deep down
You know that we are the same
    Leaving them feeling betrayed
Breaking the bonds that you've made
There is no price we won't pay
We both know what it takes to survive
    Deep down
    We only care for ourselves
Deep down, we're lonely demons from hell
    Hello
Drown in your sorrow and fears
Choke on your blood and your tears
Bleed 'til you've run out of years
We must do what it takes to survive
Give up your honor and faith

      Spoilers
I don't think the wind bag was so insignificant. In some myths the gods had a pact that prevented them from attacking the winners of the war unless directly provoked for a period and I think this is also true in epic for the following reasons
      1. Despite the fact that Polyphemus must have tattled to his dad immediately Poseidon didn't attack the fleet and only sent storms to block their way. After the storms were trapped by Aolus he still didn't do anything even when they almost made it home. It wasn't until the wind bag was opened and blew them to the island of the giants (laistrygonians, Poseidon's servants which makes the island his territory) that he attacked directly.
      2. After they escaped with the aid of the wind bag he didn't chase them nor did he attack them again despite probably knowing exactly where they were( I mean common they were sailing on the sea, his domain, the god of the sea can't find them while they are on a boat at sea?). The only thing he did was block their way home with storms again forcing them to sail around until they ran into the sirens
      3. After the storms were trapped with the wind bag again in the vengeance saga he didn't do anything until ody almost made it home. Then he kept asking him to get in the water (his territory again) first instead of just directly attacking his boat like he did in ruthlessness
This is just a theory I have though so its not certain

Sadly, Odysseus was fully aware they couldn't get through the lair without at least as many dead men as Scylla has heads. He knew she had six heads that would be a threat, which is why he specified six torches. She could only eat one person at a time per head, so six people died.
And he told Eurylochus to light the torches in hopes that Eury would be one of the ones to die. He wasn't GOING to do that, until Eury cut in with the windbag confession. That was the point where Ody knew that he was willing to see Eury die.
By the way, as far as pronunciation goes, Skylla is the original Greek pronunciation, true, but English traditional pronunciation is Sylla.

When I gave ny own recommendation for the animatic on the last video I mentioned that each of the more popular animatics had issues that I felt made them not great for a first time listener and it seems like you guys fell straight into this one.
The scene where Odysseus breaks down towards the end I wish was just cut, i kinda get what the animator was going for, 1 private moment where he lets the mask slip and you see how much this all actually takes out of him. But in the end it only serves to distract viewers from the main point of the song. The song is about what Odysseus becoming the monster actually means. He is so desperate to get home that he is now willing to sacrifice his own men like they where mere chess pieces all the while Scylla is songing to Odysseus Monster to Monster, comparing them. Until you get to the climax of the song where the 2 of the even harmonize.
Having that humanizing moment with Odysseus crying completely misses what he rest of the song is trying to say.

Did you know the saying 'in btw the sword AND the wall" comes from the proverb " in betweem scylla AND charibidys" ? That's says a Lot.
Scylla Is a grecoroman sea momster, as the sirens said not even Poseidón or Zeus bothered her.
With 12 Misfits toes 6 heads she fished ANYTHING that passee thru her rock.
    There's 2 origins to her
#1- she's one of typhons daughter's, thypon as the dude that manage to overthrew Zeus
#2 she was a normal nymph, she was un love w the Oceanid (?) glaucos. Circe also liked glaucos so in jealousy she cursed scylla into the monster.
In the Odyssey after going to the underworld they go to circes Island, both have a meeting on what to do next
Is Circe the one who explains that in a stretch there"ll be 2, rocks where 2 Monters Dwell. Scylla am Charbydis
Circe herself says she doesn't know what she would do so she puts the option
Scylla, a kraken like monster that Will snatche them
    Charibidys Is a living Whirlpool
Her input is "better to loose 6 Men than the whole fleet" Ody does ask if there's no way to fend them off " by the Time you put Ur armor she would have alredy snatched another 6 Men"
When push come to shove, he decides not to Tell the crew "to not de moralize them"

Here’s where we found out Eurylochus betrayed his allies and king because he got butthurt that Odysseus told him to not question him, HIS KING AND GENERAL, in front of his soldiers. Ultimately both are in the wrong, but I seriously can’t feel bad for Eury when he does so much fucked up stuff, especially helping in getting 550 men killed by Poseidon
