    This is a cultural/family thing, Annie.
    In a lot of cultures, a family’s reputation means EVERYTHING. I’ve read so many instances of parents

    the SF former fire commissioner that was attacked, it turned out that he was attacked by a man defending himself.
    the ex-commissioner's name is Don Carmignani. He got caught doing at least a dozen serial attacks on homeless people he found sleeping rough over the course of months. Several of his attacks were caught on video, quite a few others reported to police, but not caught on film
    It seemed like he just decided he'd "clean up the streets" around his home, his mom's home, and anywhere else he walked regularly
    He would go out with a mask on and a big can of BEAR MACE - which can kill people - and blast them in their faces, usually while they slept
    He would then also rob them, and the ones who had pets, he bear maced their pets too
    A lot of outlets with a certain bias reported on Don Carmignani being attacked, but then elected to not clarify any of the really shocking background that quickly came to light
    Really sickening stuff... Attacking homeless people for fun. The day he got attacked with the steel bar, he was coming up on a man he'd already attacked twice in the past. The man recognized him, with his distinctive large build, mask, hat, and the giant can of bear spray in his hand.
    Rather than get attacked and robbed for a third time, the homeless man flipped the script, and broke Don Carmignani's jaw instead
    It upsets me that almost no attention has been given to this, and that I haven't heard a peep about Don Carmignani facing charges for serially strongarm robbing and assaulting homeless people with a potentially deadly weapon

    • @filthforce
      @filthforce Рік тому +38

      the DA is still looking to charge the man who defended himself against carmignani, saying that he went overboard, or something... like, you're allowed to defend yourself, but he should have stopped at 3 licks, rather than 4... like you wouldnt be completely out of your mind with adrenaline pumping when you;re defending yourself against some giant man whose attacked you and robbed you for no reason at all, multiple times... and the DA is also showing no interest at all, in charging carmignani over his horrible crimes. for real, attacking random homeless people, that's just like preying on children. going after the specific population that has no means of defense. sickening case. carmignani needs to be prosecuted, and the homeless man needs to be left alone

      @@rhiannonoshea9203 yea... I live in NY, we've got really robust social safety nets here, at least by USA standards... most people here can acquire SOME kind of housing, even if they simply refuse to work, without a recognized disability to receive benefits in account of.
      And those who can't, or are working on it, there are shelters... But, I have heard that the men's shelter is, as they are most places, a pretty nasty place. Anything you have is liable to get stolen, even something as worthless as some paperback book you got for free.
      People say it's the same atmosphere as prison, as staff don't go on the floor, so the biggest and baddest, or those who have a group, can just kind of dominate whoever and get what they want. A lot of men will elect to stay on the streets, find some abandoned structure to camp in, rather than stay at the shelter
      It is a shame that CA gets such a bad rap for "their" homeless problem. Southern California is where homeless people from all over the USA who have to sleep rough tend to gravitate towards, because the climate allows you to remain outdoors year-round, where most other places, you absolutely need some place to go during the winter
      But yeah, I am a man and I'm 240 lbs so I don't typically feel much danger out on the street, but I am in an economically blighted area, our major industry here is "human services," i.e. administering the programs and services for disabled folks, recently paroled and released prisoners, homeless, etc...
      There are some places where homeless-looking people tend to be at and they panhandle, sure, but I've never been approached aggressively or anything
      I've been lightly harassed a handful of times here and there within the city, but never by homeless or anything. It's always been like, slightly too aggressive, young gay dudes, lol
      Which I don't expect is necessarily a problem most MEN face anyway... I know women and girls face this kind of thing, everywhere, all the time... I just have an appearance that men who are into men seem to appreciate. And I maybe smile at people too freely, give some the wrong idea

    I've been a paralegal in family law in Silicon Valley for over 30 years. We deal a lot with Southeast Asian divorces etc. Mostly people in Tech. You are never just dealing with, for example, the wife. You're dealing with the whole family. It's unbelievable how many people you have to talk to to get any kind of consensus to go forward with important decisions in the case. A lot of the time an email will be made just for the case and then the whole family both here and in India or Turkey, for example, has input. I finally had to put my foot down and say each family member had to use a different color font. We also had to get signed releases for the various relatives to be on these email containing case info for the person who hired us. When we found out who it was that is believed to have murdered Bob Lee, it made total sense. The thing that makes me super sad, not that anybody deserves to go down who wasn't perpetrator the kind of crimes usually covered, is that he was, by everybody's account, a really nice guy.

    I was in San Francisco for a company offsite the same week this happened. I hadnt been to the city since pre-covid and to say it has changed for the worst is an understatement. My hotel was in a "good" part of downtown and when I parked in my $300 night hotel garage (which cost an extra $50 per day to do) there was a sign above the space that said *"Please take any valuable belongings with you. There is a 70% chance that your vehicle will be broken into and this hotel is not responsible for any theft that occurs in this parking garage"* walking to the office 2 blocks away every morning and afternoon was horrible. There were two people in sleeping bags right in front of the door of the hotel one morning that you had to step over to get out who truly smelled like the strongest urine you could imagine. There are people smoking crack in the street, you have to watch where you step because there are used needles everywhere. One day two naked men were sitting cross-legged playing pattycake with their hands on the corner. The scariest was on the way back to the hotel at like 6pm and one crazy dude had a makeshift knife and was erracticly walking around swinging it yelling at nobody and everybody. I work in tech and so after the news about Bob's death (not far from where I was staying) I honestly can't see myself going back there anytime soon. The city is destroyed, and it is truly heartbreaking because it was once the most vibrant, beautiful and innovative city ihe world. 😢

    Oh, the former Fire Commissioner for SF that was attacked, Don Carmignani... it turns out Carmignani had been going out at night, serially attacking homeless people at random with bear spray (which is potentially fatal for humans), strongarm robbing them of their little cash, ID cards, and other possessions, even attacking their pets, blasting innocent dogs with bear spray, just to terrorize their owners.
    A lot of biased outlets covered his attack, but then slept on reporting any of the details that came out about it later.
    The man who lumped Carmignani with a steel bar, had been attacked by Carmignani in the past. Carmignani was approaching him, masked up, bear mace in hand, prepared to attack him again, when the homeless man popped up and beaned him.
    Carmignani has been hiding, he didn't press charges, because he seems to be terrified of the full truth of all the attacks he perpetrated coming to light.
    Just wanted to clarify that one because that case was not at all what it was presented as originally. Sadly, the DA, last I knew, was still keen on charging the homeless man who defended himself against serial attacker Don Carmignani.

      @@perfectlyyoubeauty yeah for real, imagine what other kinds of nonsense he's been pulling throughout his life too? I mean, I doubt law abiding men decide one day when they're 50 to go out and start doing serial crimes... I would bet that he's been engaging in some kind of extreme nastiness at every stage of his life. And, as he did with who he selected as his victims in San Francisco, he calculated to minimize risk... After all, had he not made the mistake of pulling up on the same dude three times, he'd have slipped by unnoticed for this as well - the self-defense attack on Carmignani was the inciting incident that got him caught for what he'd been doing.
      And he isn't stupid, he tried to slip into obscurity after being worked over with that crowbar, not wanting to press charges, recognizing that this could be what gets him caught, and wanting to just let sleeping dogs lie in hopes he could drift back into anonymity.
      I got to wonder if there weren't any unsolved strings of arsons in any of the areas that Carmignani operated as a Fire Marshall all those years. I doubt he just hates the homeless so specifically that these are the first antisocial acts he's done.
      Nah, he's a man who likes to hurt people. Someone with low self-esteem, a man who feels less-than and always has, and the only reprieve he gets from the torture of his mind, is those fleeting moments when he is out there hurting someone, dominating them, getting that feeling of superiority that he NEEDS
      Hopefully if someone once noticed anything like that, they speak up now, now that what Carmignani is, is known to all.

    I was born, and have lived most of my life about 40 miles North of San Francisco. When I was a teenager and all through my 20s, San Francisco was an amazing city. I've been all over this country, and I always felt that San Francisco was the most beautiful city of all. Seattle was a close 2nd. I went to New York City for the first time in my 20's and thought it was dirty and disgusting. I did not like it at all. In my 30's, I started focusing more on my career and family and didn't go to San Francisco much. I am 47 now, and I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but San Francisco is so dirty and full of homeless people and drugs and human shit on the sidewalks. There are tents everywhere, and people clearly messed up on hard drugs. They are scarry because they will jump out in front of you and sometimes even grab onto you. I went to New York City for the first time since my late 20's last month and it was a beautiful, clean city compared to San Francisco. I didn't see tents all over the sidewalks or human shit or drug paraphernalia. Even with millions more people there, it is so much nicer than San Francisco.
    I used to be so proud of San Francisco and felt so lucky to live so close to such an amazing city. It breaks my heart to see how much it has declined. I do believe in having empathy for those less fortunate, but why should that mean letting people camp out and shoot up drugs on the sidewalks? I wish we could just take some land and create a camp with services for the homeless. They don't belong on the streets of our city. It's not an appropriate place to live. It's not safe. It's not sanitary, it's bad for business and not fair to the people who live and work in the city. I just don't understand why we can't clear them out, as long as we give them somewhere safe to go?

    Hi Annie, just my input on Nima's weird possessiveness over his sister:
    I am Persian and by Nima's name and last name I can tell that he is persian. I hate to contribute to the stereotype but unfortunately many Middle Eastern men, be it uncles, fathers, brothers, husbands or even cousins believe they have a sense of ownership over women. His behavior doesnt surprise me one bit.

    • @DeniseWilliams-mu7ex
      @DeniseWilliams-mu7ex Рік тому +1

      I was thinking the same thing about his heritage and feelings about the women in their family, but, if it were about the sister, wouldn't Nima have done something to her for bringing shame to the family?

    • @Mila-Nova
      @Mila-Nova Рік тому +6

      @@DeniseWilliams-mu7ex not necessarily. Some male family members are just overbearing and controlling like the brother. It doesn't necessarily have to do with religion since many persians aren't religious (not counting the government).
      For example, my own father was super controlling and strict when I was growing up. Heaven forbid I had a boyfriend in high school. The behavior is more like dictating and controlling your life. It's a double standard. The things my brother could do I couldn't for example. The men in our culture feel like they own us and what we do in our lives. Not every man is like that but most are.

Its not right but its true. Evaluate every patient as if they are infectious or have HIV, That way when someone does have a pathogen u should be aware of u already have ur routine down because u treat every patient the same. I don’t know their religion but it sounds like it was about their family’s reputation. The sister do often “disappears” though. But they can have talked with the family and decide that it’s enough to take care of that person who “destroyed” his sister. Eeeeven if it was her own idea. Sadly.

    For this defense attorney being so "experienced", she seems to let alone of shit fall out of her mouth. Then when she's called on it, she has that goofy smile and then dramatically refuses to answer. I'm curious to see how she can dig her and her client out of all these clearly damning statements.

    Thank you so much for covering this. I live in SF near where he was stabbed. Its a beautiful neighborhood. But for the first few days we were all convinced that he was stabbed by a random homeless crazy person because this area has a big homeless community. The owner of the convenience store opposite our building said that Bob used to live here and was familiar with the neighborhood.

    In middle eastern and southeast Asian communities, the men in the family control all the women in the family. They are expected to defend the reputation of the family. In some cultures you see “honor” killings where the woman is killed. In this instance, the brother, who may consider himself the patriarch of the family, is removing the person that he perceives has defiled his sister, who he considers cannot make her own decisions.

    • @jtt1371

      that's what I said.. when you know of honour killings and hear how any why they happen - the motive was simple to me.. Here in the UK with big middle eastern and southeast Asian communities you hear of these in the news, sadly the crime is against the woman in the family.

It is strange to us, but when you look at other cultures it’s their norm. How old was this woman? Yea, exactly. There comes a time in life when you don't need to defend your sister's honor. She becomes old enough to decide if she has any honor at all or not. I honestly think there was more to it. Perhaps the guy already had ill feelings toward Bob. Be it jealousy or whatever. The sister thing just pushed him over the edge.

    Excellent presentation of all the info, and I particularly love your nonjudgmental way of explaining everything. I think the world would be a better place if more ppl chose not to judge what consenting adults do on a Monday afternoon. Bob didn’t deserve for his life to be taken nor for it to be picked apart by the media. It’s horrifying that the daily mail released his last moments to the world rather than the police. They’re despicable.

    I'm a native New Yorker so it's not like I'm from the bible belt and all I can is that you could give me all the money in the world and I wouldn't want a life like any of these people. It's an empty existence and things never end well. This is a prime example. This man did not deserve to die but I can't relate to these people who are always thrill-seeking. Call me judgemental but I find it sad. The drugs and jumping from bed to bed are not going to make anyone happy.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a degree of the occult involved as well. City Hall is corrupt as it always has been. There's always has been this element of kinky lifestyle here way before the tech industry came. Thanks for diving in.

    “How can someone walk a football field and not know he’s stabbed?” Adrenaline. We see it all the time. We’ve seen people shot in the hard run a football field before dropping. This happens more often than not. Most people also think people just drop when they are stabbed or shot. Not always the case. Many run off. The defense attorney is disingenuous and disgusting. And to think she was an AD letting people like this off. She has a track record as an AD of getting murderers off.
