Rest in Peace, Tony Todd. You were my favourite version of Candyman as well as one of the most talented people when I see you in many movies; the power you bring to the characters you play through you voice is amazing.
I love how much iconography Candyman gets to claim. Jason has the hockey mask and machete. Freddy has the hat, sweater, and glove. Candyman has the hook, the bees, the mirrors, the trenchcoat, and the candy.
This has one of the best horror soundtracks of all time, and a great ending that gets looked over in the sequels. Thanks for covering the series James :)
Came on here to tell that Tony Todd unfortunately passed away today. Cinema will not be the same without him. Hopefully he’s honored in the Kill Count for the next Final Destination coming out next year.
True story. My Wife Kahlie’s Dad, when she was a little girl, found out that she was afraid of the Halloween theme cause it “sounded creepy”. He then proceeded to play it randomly throughout her childhood to freak her out. So even though she’s a huge horror fan, when we met in college, she’d never seen the Carpenter classic. She’d built up such trauma over the theme music she was subconsciously certain that Halloween would be scary on a level she wouldn’t be able to handle. After many years of being in a relationship, I was able to finally convince her to give it a try. And after all that build up, there was only one review possible: “Was that it?”
You missed one of the most interesting parts: "I negotiated a bonus of $1,000 for every sting during the bee scene. And I got stung 23 times. Everything that’s worth making has to involve some sort of pain. Once I realized it was an important part of who Candyman was, I embraced it. It was like putting on a beautiful coat." - Tony Todd
Coming back to this count just minutes after learning of Tony Todd's passing today. I'm heartbroken. Maybe this video will give me some slight comfort.
I absolutely love the fact that most actors who play villains/horror movies slashers are usually the sweetest and most caring of their fellow cast and crew 🥺❤️
True. Because she was the one disproving him, killing her and having her join him makes his desire to have her special. Some random young woman won't do, it has to be Helen. Meanwhile the man who is supposed to be there for her is off screwing one of his students and starts redecorating their apartment when she was incarcerated in the mental hospital. The murderous malevolent spirit was more of a romantic and showed more appreciation than the asshole. Plus he's cultured. There's just something about a calm cultured villain. They're better than your average psychopath.
it’s insane how this movie makes me fall in love with both Daniel Robitaille/Candyman AND Helen at the same time like DAMN I’d be _both_ of their victims
Rest in peace to the legendary Tony Todd. Candyman is my all time favourite horror film along with its soundtrack, nobody could even come close to playing that role like Tony did.
Wow, I didn't know those bees were really in Tony's mouth. I was waiting for Dead Meat to say they made a prosthetic of Tony's head which is what we see the bees in. That's impressive.
Bees will vibe pretty well as long as nothing pisses them off. I had a bee resting on my knee once for several minutes, and I made sure to stay absolutely still until it left...although I'm not sure if I would've done as well if it was in my mouth.
One of the few horror villains that is actually tragic as well as terrifying. He didn't deserve what happened to him or what he became. Makes him stand out. His back story is heartbreaking.
Fun fact: There is a character played by Tony Todd in the 3rd Season of MTV's Scream where that character pays an homage to Mr. Todd's role as Candyman.
I think him saying "it was always you" had a few meanings. The first would be its literal meaning, that she was the one to do the killings (she was just in a posessed state, but it was physically her doing the killings) But i think the second is a symbolic meaning, that helen was actually Caroline in a past life, and thats why candyman was so obsessed with her and doing killings with her.
I know this is 2 years late, but my favorite interpretation is that there was never a man who died to begin with, and that Candyman is sort of a tulpa-esque being that exists from the sheer belief of people
James always puts a touch of humor in the kill counts, like he referred Detective Valento as the King of Cartoons from Pee-wee's Playhouse (because, ironically, they were played by the same actor)
Question: does Candyman keep track of how many times someone says his name, so someone that said it 4 times 10 years ago says it one more time, or is there a statute of limitations on how many times it's said?
I always felt a strong attraction to Candyman. He speaks seductively and tempting. He was an intelligent villain and makes "be my victim" sound alluring.
"Finally, a way out of my student debt." the broke student says after crossing several other urban myths off the list, after failing to summon them to finish the job.
I actually met Tony Todd at a convention a couple years ago. Guy was so nice I asked if I could have a picture for free and he looked around to see if his agent was looking then he whispered "Sure why not"
"Says the guy who count kills for a living" -James Imagine saying 'I count kills for living' to anyone it's either makes you look cool and scary or a maniac.
“I am the writing on wall, the whispers in the classroom. Without these things, I am nothing; so now I must shed innocent blood. Come with me” Such a classic line, Candyman is a top ten horror movie in my book
This movie never scared me as a kid when it came out. I was actually more mesmerized by the musical score. I always thought it was so beautiful, and it raised the film above the idea of it merely being a horror movie.
@@tallymac I can understand where, and why most people would find the character terrifying. It just never did it for me. I was fearful of conventional horror movies like The Howling, Aliens, and The Thing. The latter scared the bejesus out of me.
@@BrooklynBeTheBoro Hmm thats acually interesting, so what was it that made candyman not terrifying for you? was it the unique storyline or was the whole concept just not scary for you?
@@tallymac I'd say it was the concept. During the early 80's pretty much everyone knew the urban legend of "Bloody Mary". Supposedly if you locked yourself in the bathroom with the lights out, and repeated her name 3 or 5 times (I'm too old to remember the exact amount) into the mirror, then Bloody Mary would appear and try to kill you. Pretty much everyone I knew had done it, and nothing happened to them. So in my young mind it all amounted to little more than a stupid prank. Also, unlike other traditional monsters, Candyman wasn't an indiscriminate killer. He wasn't a mindless evil entity that killed innocents at random. The people he killed actively sought out an encounter with him or was connected to those who sought after him. All in all, it was just a good stand-alone film. I loved seeing a Black antagonist with a focus on the evils of America's past. And I also loved the fact that it was set in the projects because I grew up in the projects in Brooklyn. Horror movies didn't take place in areas like my neighborhood. They mostly took place in the woods or small rural towns.
@@tallymac I think the style of the movie lends itself to being immersively ethereal and melodramatic. Like you get so pulled in the world and atmosphere that the scariness of the Candyman just sorta works with the whole mood rather than shock you
Oh dear lord, they used actual Crips! And two more things: 1. Tony Todd has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. I would LOVE to hear him narrate an audiobook just once. And 2. I love the fact that they waited until the halfway point to bring in Candyman. It gives the skepticism more of a foothold rather than if we kept seeing him popping up around corners every three minutes.
When other people say "Candyman" 5 times they did but James A. Jannisse must be a God in the video because he said it at 40+ throughout the whole video and the spirit does nothing
Um, I think you're misunderstanding. The kiss is still in the movie. When he puts the bees in his mouth, he then kisses Helen, and this could be when he made her immortal like him. Anyway, what the studio had cut was Helen telling Candyman that she loved him. I guess they wanted to make their relationship more "one-sided." After all, can't have a Wyte girl actually loving a Blk dude in 1992....right?
The craziest thing (in my opinion) about the studio not allowing an interracial kiss in this movie is that it came out the same year as "The Bodyguard" with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, the first movie with an interracial relationship where their race wasn't a theme
Im FlyNinja depends on the day. But hey, it’s 2019 and women can think men are handsome, men can think men are handsome, and all those in between can think men are handsome. Gender is just what bits you were born with. Gender expression has endless ways of showing itself and as long as you aren’t hurting yourself, or others, just do what makes you a happy piece of bacon.
@Lol Why Women are funny and have a great sense of humor, we have to to live in a world with whole clowns like you. Oh and by the way it's can't not cant...
"What's blood for, if not for shedding? With my hook for a hand, I'll SPLIT you from your groin, to your GULLET." Probably the most quintessential line from Candyman.
Also the quintessential Clive Barker line, in that it combines excessive violence with wanky, pretentious writing that sounds deep at first, but makes less sense the longer you think about it. Blood is for circulation, because without something to carry cells and oxygen and shit, we'd, you know, kinda die.

It’s heartbreaking to come back to this after hearing Tony Todd has passed away. RIP Candyman. You can now live forever in our hearts.
"Says the guy who count kills for a living" -James
Imagine saying 'I count kills for living' to anyone it's either makes you look cool and scary or a maniac.
Yes L0L
“I am the writing on wall, the whispers in the classroom. Without these things, I am nothing; so now I must shed innocent blood. Come with me”
Such a classic line, Candyman is a top ten horror movie in my book
Thank you
I can agree.
Forrest is one of the cutest FE characters everrr
This movie never scared me as a kid when it came out. I was actually more mesmerized by the musical score. I always thought it was so beautiful, and it raised the film above the idea of it merely being a horror movie.
Yesyes so you grew up as an psychopath
Like you get so pulled in the world and atmosphere that the scariness of the Candyman just sorta works with the whole mood rather than shock you
Rest in Peace Tony Todd. You were a terrific actor and you brought me so many scares over the years. You will be missed
If only the new film had done the same
In Chicago there are no Crips or Bloods.
The Cabrini Green housing projects were the "HQ" of some GD set
No Crips and Bloods in Chicago. Just like no GDs and VLs in LA.

I fucking love the “Be my victim” bit. Tony Todd’s performance is scary and alluring. I definitely want Tony to do a lot of voice work.

That's power of hot people. Tod has that power. Its great.
Honestly, I wish they released the version with the kiss.
Who knows, maybe the footage was lost. Which would be an absolute shame.

And now Jordan Peele is making a remake of it for 2020
I'm interested to see what he'll do, and Tony Todd is reprising his role as Candyman
I'm very excited to see two CandyMan's, it's gonna be awesome
I don’t like Peele as a director, but I hope he does the film justice
I heard somewhere that it wasn’t confirmed that he’s reprising his role, but i sincerely hope you’re right.
Wasn’t a huge fan of Us but Get Out is so awesome. I’ve rewatched it at least 4-5 times,
This is excellent news
This is a pretty weird Romeo and Juliet adaptation...
They were originally gonna call this movie "BROMEO & JULIET" but the title was too offensive...:p
Yeah....
They made Romeo black.

The craziest thing (in my opinion) about the studio not allowing an interracial kiss in this movie is that it came out the same year as "The Bodyguard" with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, the first movie with an interracial relationship where their race wasn't a theme
Fun Fact: Tony Todd is the voice of Zoom on The Flash.
Thats an amazing fact 😄
He also voiced Darkseid in the Reign of the Supermen movie!
Tony Todd needs to be the narrator in every movie i will ever watch

Im FlyNinja depends on the day. But hey, it’s 2019 and women can think men are handsome, men can think men are handsome, and all those in between can think men are handsome. Gender is just what bits you were born with. Gender expression has endless ways of showing itself and as long as you aren’t hurting yourself, or others, just do what makes you a happy piece of bacon.

"What's blood for, if not for shedding? With my hook for a hand, I'll SPLIT you from your groin, to your GULLET."
Probably the most quintessential line from Candyman.
Also the quintessential Clive Barker line, in that it combines excessive violence with wanky, pretentious writing that sounds deep at first, but makes less sense the longer you think about it.
