    It was a pleasure to work with LUMIX and Atomos again, this time to produce some content for the release of new firmware opening up ProRes RAW to the mighty GH5S. I was lucky enough to get my hands on it a couple of weeks ago now and managed to put together this short film in what was a very very short period of time.
    I’ve been using the GH5 & GH5S for a few years now, and with this upgrade, the mighty GH5S is even mightier. A huge thanks to the guys at Atomos & LUMIX, for continuing to update their products with killer features.
    So what’s coming next? Well there’s the GH6 cameras of course. But for me, this update makes the GH5S a strong performer for a few more years yet!
    For this short film, I decided to go for a filmic, vintage look, to really show the versatility of the set up and demonstrate what can be achieved. I decided to shoot it all on Canon FD vintage lenses, for that lovely character you just don’t get with modern glass. Finishing with FilmConvert, I’m a massive fan of that nostalgic cinema, film-like look.
    I hope you like the short. Do stay tuned for the BTS feature coming up in the next few days.

      @Lin Berg Hi Lin thanks! Yes I only used Pro Mist in the dance scene. Reason being I wanted to use haze in that scene to enhance the lighting and reduce contrast, but as we were shooting in a 600 year old castle that had just been dehumidified, they wouldn't allow it. So some light diffusion on the lens was the compromise. I'm sure I'll be posting more content soon, perhaps with native glass. Hope that helps!

    So, I'm shooting a documentary in the middle of nowhere and was hoping to shoot some ProRes Raw for better dynamic range on my GH5s and then transcode in the evening to Pro Res 422 for better file management. Do I need to shift the color space? Or can I just transcode using media encoder? How would you approach it?

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  3 роки тому +1

      Hi mate. I’m not sure if media encoder supports the RAW codec yet or not? If it does you should be able to do that. Alternatively you could do a RAW to V-Log/V-Gamut conversion in FCPX and export as 422, but that would be a bit of a faff. To be honest me personally, I wouldn’t bother. PRR edits beautifully and the file sizes aren’t too insane

    • @RoweFilms
      @RoweFilms  3 роки тому

      Thanks dude. A bit of noise in RAW footage is quite normal. Less compression so sensor noise is more noticeable and also zero NR being applied by the camera. It's pretty standard to apply some NR in a RAW workflow. In actual fact you want to see some noise because what that tells you is you are receiving a true RAW output direct from the sensor without the camera doing any processing at all. Just make sure you're exposing to the right and it should be minimal. There were only a handful of shots in this film that I felt needed a tiny bit of NR.

But in real world scenarios it’s hard to stick to, so I try not to worry about it too much. Higher frame rates help to smooth judder out too but that’s not much help when shooting a project at 24fps

      The main difference is the GH5S has a slightly better image and dual native ISO so better in low light, plus RAW output over HDMI. GH5II has ibis. That’s what it really boils down to, so depends on your needs

      Point taken. However the purpose of this film was to promote the kit, commissioned by Atomos & LUMIX. I also had only 2 weeks to come up with a concept and deliver. That's to plan, find talent and locations, shoot, edit and deliver, so there were significant limitations in terms of the point you are trying to make. But thanks for the comment!
