I agree that the the interceptor does make an ultimate dogfighter however it comes at the cost of a high learning curve. And it works more for the imperial as they have the luxury of training their pilots more and so they are able to survive better in a more vulnerable craft than an average rebel pilot may in the same craft. So, I think that is one reason why having shields while possibly being a crutch also is a very needed component of the rebel ships, along with a hyperactive as it allows them to make quick hit and run attacks rather than all out slug fests which the lesser trained rebel pilots may die more in, and the hyperdrice allows you to make an escape if things are going wrong.
Although I am pretty sure you know this all already.

The Interceptor is the best in that game because it was gloriously simple.
As you progress through TIE Fighter's campaign, you are in increasingly complex ships where you have to manage shield direction and charge (they did not auto-balance after being hit and would not charge unless they were balanced), lasers, ion cannons, warheads, beam weapons, and eventually SLAM boosters. It makes you faster and deadlier, sure (though that's debatable with the Assault Gunboat) but you're spending more brainpower sorting through everything.
The Interceptor is a lot like it appears in Suqadrons though. Keep your speed up and your guns charged. That's all you have to worry about! Oh and have a few missiles if you want them!

I was actually surprised when I realised that First Order didn’t utilised TIE Interceptors as base for their main starfighter. It would look way cooler and make more sense. TIE Interceptors from episode VI could have played similar role for the FO fighters.

I think the TIE Interceptor doesn't serve a role that requires a hyperdrive. As you said it's primarily a dog fighting ship, and in the SWU those types of battles occur mostly around planets, stations, and capital/escort ships. There isn't a need to add extra components that may slow the ship down. Unless you get left by your Star Destroyer and end up getting chased all over a planet by an X-Wing pilot with a hard-on for Imps.

NightShadowDark The Nomad the thing of it was, the engine power more or less negated the drag issues, keeping it above the X Wing in speed in atmosphere, and its wing arrangement could actually make atmospheric combat advantageous for a skilled Interceptor pilot. Keeping costs in mind, as well as standard Imperial doctrine, you wouldn't need a hyperdrive on the Intercepter, and as is, it is by far one of the best crafts in it's class.
If you need them for hit n' run attacks you could always pair them with a Quasar or a Gozanti. The lack of a hyperdrive is only really a problem if you need to get away, as seen in the last trailer. In any case, if the Imperials were to copy the Rebels hit n' fade tactics they would need to send something other than Intercepters, as the effectiveness of these tactics rely on missiles/torpedoes to do most of the damage.
In some of the books, the X-wing series in particular, you hear about shields saving fighter pilots on more than one occasion, so those might be effective as long as their installation doesn't interfere with the Intercepters mobility.
If the choice was between a hyperdrive and shields I'd think shields would be better, if you had to choose. Also helps keeping the costs down, and outfitting an entire galactic navy with ships can't be cheep.

    • @littlekong7685
      @littlekong7685 2 роки тому +4

Don't forget imperial doctrine was to prevent pilots from being able to defect.
Fighter pilots are the most independent, and thus the most vulnerable to rebel propaganda. So keeping the crafts dependent on Imperial transport means the pilots have no ready access to escape Imperial control without risking flying another vessel.

Personally I never saw the Interceptor an a bad fighter. A Squadron of Tie Interceptors would be pretty effective at the roles needed. The Fact they don’t have shields is just sad and dumb, Rogue Squadron called Tie Interceptor Pilots “Bloodthirsty and Suicidal” witch with just some Shields you can make sure more pilots survive to fight longer. Shields are not a Crutch they are a tool, so personally if I had to choose a stock interceptor Id rather have some RZ-2s witch are normally Shield than a Tie Interceptor. No defending the ISD really, at least not in its role as the Empire's one-size-fits-all warship. The ISD is a great battleship, perfect for slugging it out with other capital ships or performing orbital bombardment. But battleships are expensive, manpower and resource hungry, and they lack versatility. (This is one of the many reasons no real life Navy fields them anymore) I think Eck has addressed this before, but the Empire would have been much better served by diversifying its fleet and leaning more on multirole ships like cruisers and corvettes. Battlegroups built around 1 or 2 ISD's would have served the Empire far better than just producing more and more of the same ship.

Personally, I would go even further to say that it's not just TIE/IN, but also TIE/LN that is underrated.
Sure, lack of protection is an issue. But the first rule of fighting is to not get hit, which is achieved by either destroying the target first or to evade incoming fire. The latter is achieved by TIE's superior maneuverability, while the two laser cannon can deal with any threat it came across. Most form of protection add considerable mass, hinder ships maneuverability while didn't actually provide that much protection in return (even X-wings can't take more than a few hits).
People seem to forget that TIE/LN were doing well against most non-Imperial starfighters before the Rebel got their hands on X-wing, which by that time, TIE/LN was already about a decade old, and it's only natural that state-of-the-art X-wing would be designed in parts to exploit TIE/LN's weakness.
I personally don't see much problems with TIE not having hyperdrive. They are designed as integrated part of the fleet, not really as stand-alone fighter like X-wings.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 4 роки тому +13

The thing with the basic TIE is that a fighter focused entirely on maneuverability at the expense of anything else is entirely dependent on its pilot's skill level (take it from someone who mains an Origin M50 in Star Citizen), and the Galactic Empire was using them as their rank-and-file fighter. The basic TIE is a capable ship in the hands of the right pilot, of course, but the Empire was stuffing everyone and their grandmother into the cockpits of those things and hoping that numbers would reduce the liability caused by the individual pilots' skill levels.
If I was in charge of deciding who gets to fly what, I'd assign the rookies to something more survivable (Defenders, Avengers, Aggressors) and give the LNs to people who can handle them. Or better yet, replace the LNs with DNs (Remote piloted drone fielded by the Dark Empire in Legends, looks a bit like if a Vulture Droid was built based on TIE series design specs) so that losing a fighter doesn't mean also losing the pilot.

    • @jrggrop

I think it's worth pointing out that in A New Hope, Ties are trading near even against X-wings. The deflectors don't really let the X-wing tank hits or anything like that - we see short bursts of laser fire from Ties turn them into fireballs quickly enough.

The tie fighters are a clear reference to Japanese Zeros from WWII. And it is true that a skilled pilot would be able to out- dogfight any other fighter. Unfortunately for the Japanese (and by extension the Empire) solo dogfights are rendered obsolete by proper wingman tactics. The US developed these mid way through the war in the Pacific and almost immediately the battle for air supremacy turned in favor of the US. Yes, if fighting only one enemy at a time superior speed and maneuverability will allow you to avoid getting hit. But if your enemies refuse to engage in one on one fights and always work in pairs then it is unlikely that you will get a shot off without also exposing yourself to enemy fire. And the enemy is far more durable than you.
The experience of even skilled Tie pilots should be frustration as they are unable to safely get a bead on any rebel fighter while having to constantly dodge attacks that are fatal to them while their enemy can safely tank a few volleys.

Basically the idea of a cheaper and quicker to make V-wing that is meant to take on pirates and criminals who are dumb enough to take on the Empire. Outdated by the time of the Rebellion yes but even then as mentioned in this thread they actually still did well in spite of that fact even in the films.

The result is that even basic TIEs are flying glass cannons, with their strafing runs throwing up explosions comparable to 40-50mm shells, using the strafing run in TFA as an example.

The TIE Interceptor doesn't need a hyperdrive. An interceptor's role is to stop other small craft from getting near your capital ships. The Empire didn't need to use hit and run tactics only to defend against them. So why make an "expandable" more expensive to produce?

    • @Yora21
      @Yora21 4 роки тому +1

I would assume that a hyperdrive probably would be just as expensive as the entire fighter you install it into. Especially when the fighter has a simple and lightweight construction.
I don't see what TIEs would gain by having hyperdrives. They can be made ready for launch in hyperspace and they don't have to carefully taxi out of hangars. As soon as their carrier ship jumps out of hyperspace, they can release the docking clamps and have the whole squadron lined up for attack in seconds.
Large carriers are expensive ships, but for the Empire (though not for the Imperial Remnant) money is not an issue, and neither is access to shipyards and construction resources.

In a vacuum the TIE Interceptor is one of the best star fighters of all time in star wars. The problem is the same one that afflicts most of the TIE line. It is so concerned with the ship being cheap it ends up relying heavily upon the skills of the pilots.
    Skilled
    Pilots
    Are
    Not
    Cheap
Yes it needs shields. If you don't have them then you will lose those expensive pilots to random cr@% they simply didn't see coming. There is no amount of git good scrub that is going to enable you to see everything in the chaos of a massive battle, or clue you in to an ambush before the shooting starts.
And it needs missiles. The Interceptor is meant for anti star fighter action. It simply doesn't need massive torpedoes that can crack capital ship hulls. Smaller ordinance is not only cheaper and easier to carry, but can be faster and more agile while still having enough punch to down enemy fighters. Plus it gives your pilots more options to fight without risking their lives.
Hyperdrive doesn't really matter honestly. It just makes sense to have the majority of the fleet's fighting power use carriers. What the Empire really needed was fleet diversity. Specifically they needed a branch of their fleet to be a dedicated rapid response force. The response force will likely want as few carriers and as many hyperspace capable ships as it can get. It simply works better with the necessarily different strategies and doctrines of such a force. The only question is which branch of the navy you want this fighter to be in. Fleet composition and logistics, not fighter design or performance.
In summary, the best TIE is the Chir'daki.

We see TIE interceptors with hyperdrives and shields in some of the X-Wing and maybe in one of the Wraith Squad books (been a while since I read them) But they were always reserved as a bug out craft for a high ranking Imperial officer and that is a huge, huge waste. Your average high ranking Imperial Navy officer while he might know how to fly the ship.... thats about where his skill is going to end, they spend much much more time commanding larger ships. Put a squad of those together and you have a huge advantage.
Even though an interceptor with hyperdrive and shield is slower then one without it still is much faster then a X-Wing. Put a squad or several squads together and give them escort duty. Then you can have your ships out already as you jump into high risk areas and you don't have to worry about the delay in launching and recalling them. You could also send them into Rebel or suspected Rebel territory and preform some of the same hit and run strikes. Granted this is really only likely to happen after the NR forms and the Empire is on the run but still. An interceptor without shield and hyperdrive isn't as effective as it could be.

I've been saying this for years. The Interceptor is the best standard-issue starfighter used by either side of the conflict and it is by a pretty wide berth.
At least when it comes to dogfighting and air superiority. Use a Y-wing if you need a bombing run.
The A-wing is almost too fast, to the point where I often found in the old games I had little time to do anything as I zoomed past my target, so I had to slow down and lose all my advantage. And the Interceptor has much more damage output and mobility.
The X-wing doesn't know what it wants to be, and in its attempt to cover all it's bases, just ends up being standard.
The Standard TIE is not fast enough or otherwise mobile enough to really overcome it's shortcomings. It's okay, but the X-Wing is better.
The TIE Bomber sucks. It either needs intense shielding or, even better, much higher speed and acceleration. It doesn't actually need to be as agile as the Interceptor, but it should have as much pure speed.
The Y-wing is awesome, but plays a fundamentally different role.

    • @lenkagamine4145
      @lenkagamine4145 4 роки тому

The A-wing has to be used differently, its more of a hit and run fighter. Dive in and if you miss the enemy keep going so they cant retaliate. Dont know if you can use it like that in the game, just talking from experience with high speed planes in flight sim games.
as for bombers, I'd say the B-wing is the best one. Y-wing is adequate but doesnt really shine in any particular capacity.

    • @kyleflanagan963
      @kyleflanagan963 4 роки тому

@@lenkagamine4145 For the record, all of this came from my experience in the Star Wars: Tie Fighter and X-Wing games.
I totally agree conceptually with the B-wing, but they didn't give you a lot of time in that ship and the time they DO give you proves it to be an extremely technical ship that has a high potential but a lot of bizarre oddities holding it back, largely due to its extremely unoptimized shape.
While the Y-Wing is easy to hit if you're strafing it from above, the B-Wing is easy to hit from almost any angle other than straight from above or below. This is especially bad as a bomber because you need to be directly approaching the big capital ships to do that and you're just a much easier target than the flat Y-wing for those ship's anti-fighter weaponry.
Also, because your guns are so off from center compared to the cockpit, you basically have to adjust your aim differently depending on how far away a foe is. And this is extremely awkward. Sure, you need to adjust your aim for all sorts of factors anyways, but this needlessly adds another factor.
But I'd say the worst thing is that if at ANY point you have to fly very close to anything, debris, a capital ship, anything at all, the odds of you smashing into that thing are extremely high because of how hard it is to keep situational awareness of your craft.
Now to be fair, ALL of this is the sort of thing you can get used to and compensate for. But a good user interface is meant to make it so that you don't NEED to compensate. As such I just can't give the B-Wing my approval. Even with much lower specs and outdated tech, I still think the Y-Wing is just fundamentally better.
And yeah, I get that the A-Wing is meant to be used differently, but again it's extremely high specs actually make it struggle with this, in my experience.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good ship and it probably competes with the X-Wing for my second favorite ship that is currently playable in Squadrons (which is why I didn't go over the B-Wing at all originally).
But for the hit and run tactics you describe, it moves so fast that it often doesn't have time to actually do enough damage to take out your target. At least in my experience.
It actually fares better in Squadrons from what I've seen, due to how you can mod your ship. Giving it the mod that decreases top speed while increasing turning speed is a great match for it. I haven't done enough testing to see if it's twin cannons do as much damage as the Interceptor's four. If so, then it will be as good, I'd think (or better, due to shields). Although even then, I tend to like the spread of the 4 cannons better myself. It's more forgiving of not being exactly on target, especially for targets with small profiles like the Y-Wing from behind.
I mean, I know I'm talking like some sort of authority, but this is just me relaying what my experiences were with the old games and my very little experience so far with the new one. It's just my opinion.

TIE ships were cheap and expendable just like how the empire viewed its soldiers. Rebels needed more sturdy ships because they have to use guerilla tactics in the war and I'd imagine good pilots were harder to come by so they wanted to keep them alive a bit better.

There is value in a fighter being able to take some damage. If a rookie doesn't survive, they never become a veteran, and the skill ceiling of their craft isn't relevant. Though I do think the TIE interceptor is probably the best starfighter in widespread Imperial service.
In Legends it isn't unheard of for Tie interceptors to have shields or a hyperdrive, but that means increased cost and less maneuverability. I don't think hyperdrives should be standard issue on the interceptor, but perhaps a piece of optional equipment for special operations squadrons to give them more range and independence for their missions.

The "agility is more important than armour" approach was tried and tested in WW2 - some nations such as Japan, Russia, and Italy tried this approach, while Germany, Britain, and the US mostly went with what we now consider to have been the conventional approach for WW2 fighters.. With good reason since, apart from the initial shock of the Zero, combat experience was that while the really GOOD pilots could thrive with the lighter designs, most pilots did better with a little more armour as long as they used tactics that employed their strengths rather than trying to dogfight a Zero or a Yak-3. Higher survival rates among the greener pilots, as well as reducing losses in general, also gives pilots more of an opportunity to get the experience to BECOME aces. As a result, both Russia and Japan were switching to the more conventional approach by the end of the war.
Which probably could be translated to the TIE Interceptor replacing the regular TIE Fighter. Ace squadrons would be really scary with it. Regular squadrons probably wouldn't be that much better off than with regular TIEs.
In terms of hyperdrive... given the Interceptor's mission parameters and Imperial expectations (pilots are expendable, and they'll usually be in control of the battlespace afterwards), it's probably not all that essential. They're intended to achieve fighter superiority while capital ships do the heavy lifting. A multirole ship which can be expected to present more of a threat to a capital ship on its own would benefit more from the hyperdrive, but at that point you're looking at adding ordnance launchers and possibly shields as well as a hyperdrive... which is basically making it a TIE Avenger.

No, because I've always thought they were the best mass-production TIE around. :)
I don't feel a hyperdrive is particularly valuable as the Empire bases everything around Star Destroyers, and if not that, Tonn-Falks or some other converted carrier. The Empire's idea of a sneak attack is an interdictor of some type, which is going to have an escort, which is going to be able to carry some TIEs. If you really need a fast moving hit and run squadron for some reason, you might as well use Avengers or Defenders or even Assault Gunboats

Tie interceptors are great ships and deadly in the hands of a capable pilot. Used correctly, no hyperdrive is not a problem but the lack of shields is an issue for 3 reasons.
    1. Effective Training should stop you becoming over reliant on the shields and keep you sharp.
    2. Even the best pilot makes mistakes occasionally. The shield will help prevent losing your best pilots through occasional minor mistakes.
    3. It is said of pilots that good judgement comes from long experience but achieving long experience is seldom the result of bad judgement…. Similarly, x-wing stories state that pilots have a high chance of death in their 1st 5 combat missions (and after which survival rates increase). Combat experience is crucial to building skills and a shield will help get past the rookie stage.
Adding a shield to an interceptor is possible but slows it down. I believe it is still faster than the x-wing when carrying shields so would be the superior dog fighter but the X-wing is still the better all rounder if you want to mix anti fighter with a capability against larger vessels in a single type (which is generally cheaper than mixing types)

  • @volodymyrboitchouk

The X wing and Tie fighter are supposed to reflect the mustang and zero respectively. This is why the X wing has longer range, greater firepower and greater durability while the Tie fighter sacrifices all this for speed, maneuverability and low cost. The Tie Interceptor just takes this oppositional relationship even further by focusing even more on speed and maneuverability while adding more firepower.
So in a 1 on 1 dogfight a skilled pilot will always win with a tie interceptor (zero) against an X wing (p51 mustang). This is why in the early war in the Pacific the US took massive casualties to its pilots and planes. However, with proper squadron tactics that avoid ever engaging in 1v1 fights that werebdevelioed by the mid war the tables turned rather drastically and as time went on Japanese casualties became so high that kamikaze attacks actually became more efficient than conventialan air assaults.
So, to answer you question of which ship is better, I would say it depends. A skilled pilot planning on fighting 1v1 dogfights will want a tie interceptor. But if I were planning on my fighter wings acting as a unit, cared about the safety of the pilots, and wanted my air (in this case space) wings to be able to accomplish more varied objectives than intercepting enemies, then I would choose the X wing.
In fact, the X wing was by far the best designed fighter in Starwars. Its durable and heavily enough to threaten capital ships, maneuverable enough to engage in dogfights and is perfectly designed for the sorts of squadron level tactical maneuvers that render individual dogfighting prowess moot. A well drilled and disciplined X wing squadron should be a match for even the most elite to interceptor squadron simply because in group fights durability trumps maneuverability (as the pacific theater in WWII proves).

you dont need a hyperdrive on your interceptor, and in fact it would be kinda stupidly wasteful and unnecessary even. Putting a hyperdrive on a multirole fighter/bomber however makes entire sense. theyre designed for different jobs. the interceptor, is as its name implies, used for intercepting enemy fighters and providing air defense for your carrier. thus, as the interceptor is attached to the carrier, burdening them with the extra mass of a hyperdrive is only going to hamper their mobility in dogfights. And well, if your carrier gets destroyed then that does suck, but by that time youve already lost, and at least from the empire's perspective, failure is not an option.

Squints are good for their price and if you have a carrier full of them with a lancer escort, then it is a great interception force, add an interdictor to that. and you have a swift fast response interception squad. Granted without a large capital ship for heavy support, it might be limited in the rolls a squad of that makeup could do, but squints are hand down the best in their cost range.

Thrawn used them as shields to protect his SSD form a salvo of ion blasts.

Re: hyperdrives: The Empire's decision to not make mass use of hyperdrives is far and away the largest blunder they made.
The TIE series is heavily influenced by the IRL Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a light fighter with excellent maneuverability and moderate firepower designed to escort bombers and engage hostile defenders in enemy airspace. And that's the most important feature: as an escort, it had _excellent_ flight range. All of this was at the expense of heavy armor and heavy weapons. Early British and American forces in the Pacific were caught off guard especially since their commanders refused to spare newer aircraft from the European theater of WW2.
The problem was that without the range advantage as Allied fighters attacked Japanese positions, the Zero was extremely vulnerable on defense. Allied aircraft had heavier armor and self-repairing fuel bladders and some were equally as fast. The defensive shortcomings became more glaring as the offensive strengths were reduced.
The Rebel hit and run tactics mitigate the TIE Interceptor because it cannot pursue enemy fighters into hyperspace or micro jump across a system to stop a fleeing blockade runner. Within the scale of Star Wars it is always on the defense where it's extreme speed and limited range are liabilities instead of strengths. And that's why the TIE Defender and its more generalist variations ultimately replace the early TIE series.

I'd argue the TIEs have more in common with the Spitfire in terms of their overall function as short range, defensive craft. As you said, the Zero was designed to operate over long distances to bring the fight to the enemy. Several models of the Spitfire share the aggressive performance of the TIE Interceptor's aggressive performance in speed and maneuverability as well as its limited combat range compared to their counterparts.

IIRC One of the first things Thrawn did, after he reorganized TIE engagement doctrine (increased number of TIEs per enemy thus increasing TIE survivability overall), is made shield generators standard on all Interceptors making the ships almost as durable as an X-Wing as a standard load-out.

    • @marrqi7wini54

It made a lot more sense for his campaign than during the height of the empire due to the fact that most warlords had all the resources & manpower and weren't too willing to give Thrawn much. (If he lost something, he was going to have a hard time replacing it.) And he was operating a more guerilla style of warfare against the new republic. So ships hyperdrive capable are perfect for hit and run attacks and surprise strikes.

The role of an interceptor is to be able to catch bombers and gun them down, so in theory it just has to be fast enough to do the job. In practice, though, the fact that the TIE Interceptor was slated to replace the original TIE means that it would also have to be able to handle fighters and other interceptors. My guess is that it trades some straight-line speed for superior maneuverability while still being able to fill its interceptor role.

There's one thing I feel is often overlooked when talking about shields on spacecraft: they are not there just to protect you from being shoot at. Actually, I wouldn't even call it their most important job - they are there to give you protection from radiation.
I know, Star Wars is a fictional universe, but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in some old guidebooks, and it makes a lot of sense. Space is full of stuff emitting radiation that depending on its type can be harmless, potentially dangerous in a long term or just directly fatal. Shields offer you protection from termal radiation when you fly near a star, they stop gamma rays from a sun going nova and they protect the electronics of your craft from all sorts of electromagnetic interference. I feel like any spaceship without shields would need excessive amounts of maintenance with its electronic systems, would make its crew much more likely to die of cancer and would be much less durable than the same craft with shields due to mechanical stress caused by sudden heating and cooling of its haul in response of radiation from nearby suns.
