Nice project James. the frame is light and strong too.. I never thought of leaving some part of the fibre saturates with resin.. You have brave heart.. I did the same when building a solar car, but for its skin and using epoxy hardener. For the frame i used pvc pipe covered with fibreglass mat with polyester resin.

Hay not sure if you talked about this but some people use "Adhesive Spray Glue" on the fiberglass to get it to stick to what you want it to before you put the resin on. I work good for me when I make pepakura helmets.

And generally the Polyester resin remains springy, while an Epoxy based resin is more rigid, Depending on your needs and wants for your projects! But hey, you learned something right!

Very cool idea, that is a great idea for a forma.
To get the resin to flow better you need to get 100 old vacuum splints and apply them with a cling film liner to push the resin around the whole cross section of the sections. That may be over engineering it but it could mean you would be able to have significantly smaller formers and less polystyrene.
For the outer. Why not use a shrink wrap plastic and then put a single layer of glass over the surface.

My mate did a Product Design degree and worked at a company designing and making merchandising and display solutions. Other jobs could be set design/construction or costume design for theater, film and TV. You could talk to your local ammeter dramatics groups and get some experience... counts for a lot these days!

    No video
but I went on your site. Looks great.
I didn't think the cloth covering would be taut enough but it works
    Sorry I doubted you
    Looking forward to the video.

Lots of crackling sounds when squeezing! Perhaps using woven strips/tape wrapped at about 45 degrees, in a 2nd layer, will increase the structural strength. (after cutting off the "sticky bits" of course. ) :)) Looking forward to seeing it in the water!

So...how "high" did you get in there?
    Why not epoxy resin?

Have you done some research before starting? I find it difficult to believe you could break every single rule about compound and fibreglass handling otherwise...

The polystyrene is not only a form, it gives the structure compressive strength.

Like the project, but if you learn how to lay up fibre glass you would save yourself loads of time. Thanks for taking the time to make these vids.

I like your idea thought of it to should have used Divina cell foam and a roll of fiberglass about 3" wide but it looks very interesting nice to see all of the ribs there is a pourable epoxy you can fill the ribs with but its heavy

    @agerrard680 8 років тому

BTW you know that East Coast fibreglass do polyester resin modified so it doesn't melt polystyrene. More expensive but you don't need the PVA process. Paint on 1 layer of resin over glass then more layers of standard stuff

So what fueled your decision to use Polyester resin instead of Epoxy based resin? Was the price the major concern?

Was it worth it?... Anyway. weird. I was just looking for this video yesterday wondering if I missed it. And it gets uploaded today. :D Can't wait to see it in the water!

This was the weirdest way to build a boat. It created a lot of unnecessary steps. All those extra steps made the boat look bad too. Its nice that they workedout ok for you.

Not to insinuate anything negative, as you're obviously qute accomplished, BUT... would it have been "better" or easier to fiberglass the straight pieces such as the keel and maybe the bulkheads before assembly and then fiberglass the curved pieces after fitting them all together? Again , not trying to criticize or imply I know any better. In fact, in just asking this, I freely admit I DON'T know, that's why I ask.

This is the ultimate relationship test..
    Wife walks into living room..
'What the hell?' said in shock (defcon 1)
'What, oh I am building a boat, to test if I can out of fibreglass with ' said excitedly (Oblivious to that rage building in her head, puppy thinking, she should be excited this is awesome)
'I don't care what you are building, why are you building it in the living room' said with an edge, she has changed stance, crossed arms, standing upright prey mantis genes engaged (defcon 4)
'Um sheds to small, easier and warmer in here' said in a neutral tone, all excitedness has gone, searching the brain for a reason on her mood shift, is it me she is angry with
'what a waste of time, how much money has this cost, it'l probably sink anyway. You have 30 minutes to get it out of here, I have friends coming over for coffee' first strike, second strike and third strike achieved.. she walk out of the living room into the shed to call friends to arrange an urgent coffee catchup, telling them the boat story and 'if you come over now you can see him fumble around, it will be a right laugh'
    *Stage 1, denial and isolation*
    You apply more tape...
'It will work, it'll be awesome'
    *Stage 2, anger*
'and I am going to build it''
    *Stage 3 bargaining*
'Her friends may get excited by it, or we could hide it what if we throw a tarp over it while her friends are here.'
    *Stage 4 depression*
    you start packing up
'I don't understand, this is awesome'
'if Johnny Depp was building a boat in the living room.......' anger setting in..
'yeah she is right, will probably sink anyway' you have been broken
    *Stage 5 acceptance*
'actually looks like crap, and she has people coming over, I don't want them to see this rubbish' ripping boat apart in order to clean up and remove any evidence
    *OR*
*MGTOW* - continues smiling and building boat in living room 'this is going to be awesome'

If you had prewet the frame and blotted the glass on it would have penetrated the matting and been 500% stronger. Live and learn.

I didn't think it would work. The cloth is not rigid enough even if it is doped. you need plywood at least. Nice try though.

the r2d2 is cool but your going about building your boat the wrong way you should tey foam core just build a mould and lay foam in and fiberglass it it would be strighter then trying to make all of that stright dude just look at some of the websites theres plenty of boatbuilding sites none of them build like this and theres a reason sorry man thumbs down on the build thumbs up on the r2d2

Truly frightening. It only runs down because you apply too much because you don't know what you are doing. You should be applying it with a roller not a brush. Oh ffs, stop talking about different mats as if you know what you're saying. All resin has to go on in one hit if you want strength. Letting it cure then wetting out next to cured id incredibly bad practice in grp work. I don't think I've ever watched anything so time consuming and expensive in my life.
