The diamond file is useful for sharpening fishing hooks. The notch in the end is useful as a hook remover, as well for installing and removing small springs.
That file on the thin side of the blade works perfectly for cutting a notch into a round hole for electrical pushbuttons. (Electricians will understand)
I figured that 1 out when I first learned about knife sharpening and learned that you could get diamond plates and thought to try the "file" on my wave for a small pocket knife
I love the surge over my wave because you can take the file out use any t shank jig saw blade now I have a metal cutter ooo and my surge can maintain its self in a pinch its the fave out of all my leathermans for that reason
Left my original wave at an ex girlfriends house years ago. Wasn't prepared to go get it back and deal with the drama. After years of needing a multi tool, I finally bought the new wave plus. That sharpener was the first tool I used lol. It's not perfect but will get the job done. The blade on my Chinese Spyderco snags a tiny bit, but it's shaving sharp again.
And if you get a Surge model you can remove the file to sharpen it's own blade, or replace with a new one, or pop in a woodsaw or hacksaw blade, of course then a pouch is handy to carry them in, or keep them in your wallet.
I carried a Wave daily for more than 30 years, and I knew about and used the diamond hone. What I wasn't able to do with it was sharpen the Wave blades on it. They fixed that with the removable file/hone on the Surge, which I now carry. Sadly, the Surge gives up the micro-screwdriver - as a spectacle wearer I used that numerous times. I still haven't found the reason for the notch at the tip of the file/hone - I'd love to know.
I found an answer in the comments (it's the equivalent of a nail nick on a normal folding blade) which was how I always used it, but wondered if there was a "tool" use.
@@NGMonocrom I suppose we could try removing fishing hooks, but I'd have to actually catch one first, and they seem to take their vacations the same days as I do 😉
My fishing hook remover suggestion sounds too close to the old saying that "When all you have is a hammer, sooner or later all your problems start to look like nails" 🙄
Unfortunately, no. The fastest way to get a sharp edge on any blade is with a diamond hone. I'd suggest checking out the offerings from DMT, and Smith's sharpening stones. If you go to smkw.com and type in those keywords into the Search bar, you'll get a good number of results.
I wouldn't ever use that sharpener on a knife I care about unless I was really desperate. From that first scraping sound I can already hear that it's very rough.
I recall that Leatherman introduced their first version Wave decades ago, and then almost immediately replaced it with the Gen. 2 version. Gen 3. only very recently came about with the replaceable wire cutters. Victorinox was a bit late into the modern multi-tool game. So if they did have such a file first, it would be on one of their older, more traditional models. Honestly, I collect Victorinox knives. Have never encountered a diamond file on one of their folding knife models.
I have one of the older Wave tools. It has separate blade's for the 2 screwdrivers instead of the changeable screwdriver bit's in the new Wave I have. I bought the newer Wave because I shorted a screw while tightening it and melted the fillips head screwdriver. I still keep the old one in a tool bag and still use it. Everything still works except the fillips.
I knew about this and I am disappointed, that new Leatherman multitools are missing this feature, I used it many times. And that micro screw driver is also slowly abandoned. I repaired many glasses and watches with it.
Thank you! Check out my Dauntless ASMR channel if you need even more help falling asleep. (Yeah, your comment likely wasn't a compliment. I don't care. I'm taking it as such.)
I feel dumb, i thought everyone knew this and it was common knowledge. I've been using my PSTII file for sharpening for over a decade. My son now owns my PSTII and he touches up his spyderco ladybug with it. (He is 8 so he gets along fine with both tools and a few others) Guess i should pass this along now that I've realized everyone just might not know of this.
I would strongly discourage using the diamond file to sharpen a quality knife unless you absolutely have to. It's not the appropriate dimension and the hinge makes it difficult to maintain the appropriate angle without marring the blade. A real diamond sharpener with appropriate lubrication properties is fairly inexpensive. In my opinion, It's not worth the risk to cheap out and misuse tools.
You're not supposed to put any sort of lube on a diamond hone. Literally, none of them; regardless of who makes the hone or what shape they used. Flat hone resembling a traditional sharpening stone, cylindrical rod shaped hone, or even a rare diamond V-shaped one. Also, when dealing with a sharpener that is significantly small or thin, such as this one, just move the sharpener across the blade instead of the other way around. Works just fine. Also, on my Wave, the file locks open rock solid. Zero wiggle. Just needs a steady hand and you're good.
@@NGMonocrom most bladesmiths near me recommend using kerosene or mineral oil, but the multiple diamond hone sets I have all came with their own brand of oil. It helps to keep the blade cool and not damaging the steel. I'm not attacking your video or opinions, I'm just saying that using improper equipment is a good way to damage the your tools.

No, version 1 looked a bit different. Leatherman listened to the feedback from customers and improved a few things shortly after version 1 came out. Version 2 remained unchanged for a staggering amount of years.

I sharpend my kitchenknives with that file - they got incredible sharp. I knew that sharpener beforehand, but thanks for sharing with all!
I have had a 08/98 leatherman wave.. this year it will be out of warranty...
Still with me, no broken parts.

I got the Letherman Wave specifically because it had that sharpener, which is useful for fixing hook points.

What’s that indentation at the end of the file?
Mainly a nail-nick for opening the file.

id argue the diamond sharpener on teh surge is better, as youc an remove it to sharpen the knife blade on teh surge
True, but the Wave came first. Also the Surge is a heavier and more expensive multi-tool.
But what is the notch on the end for?
For your finger-nail. To make opening the file a whole heck of a lot easier.
Too bad I can’t sharpen the same leatherman blade with it 😂
