Instead of calling for take out make this simple recipe! This recipe for sesame tofu is done in 30 minutes and is absolutely delicious. I know you guys will love it! I also believe that this is similar to honey chicken.

hello everyone just letting you know the recipe on the blog post has been updated to correspond with the one from my cookbook. It varies slightly as I used oil to pan fry and brown sugar instead of maple syrup. However, you can always pan fry without the oil and still use maple syrup!
Recipe and techique alteration suggestions:
- Don't coat all the tofu all together in a small bowl. Do it in patches, you'll need less cornstarch and get more even coating.
- Shallow fry the tofu with high smoke point oil (canola etc).
- Add shredded ginger to the sauce.
- Instead of half the water, use sake to give it more taste. The boiling will cook the alcohol away.
- Replace maple syrup or half of it with freshly squeezed orangejuice. Will give a nice more fruity and little tangy sweetness.
- Slip the slurry in to the sauce as a long thin liquid thread while stirring. This will reduce clumping greatly.
I love the suggestions of ginger and fresh orange juice!

I ate something like this in norway, with cauliflower instead of tofu.. and with a hint of chili. Really good! Youre boyfriend is lucky to have you, making such great food!

I just tried cooking tofu like this for the first time and it was SO GOOD!!! I've been looking for a way to get tofu crispy and for it to have a really good flavor. Your method does exactly that. And the big bonus -- which I LOVE -- is that you don't need any oil at all! The cornstarch mixture helps it get nice and crispy in the pan. And then coating it in the sauce really gives it that great flavor I've been searching for. Thank you SO MUCH. I love this recipe!!! :-)

ingridsaguilar it is definitely healthier than the sesame chicken you would get at takeout! Not the healthiest thing you can eat but definitely not unhealthy! This isn’t something l would eat everyday just for fun!

I would definitely recommend a tofu press, it definitely takes your tofu game up a notch 🔥 I recently just got one and it replicates the texture of chicken way better than any other method!

If you cut them into thinner tiles it’s much quicker to cook (only two sides), and then you can cut the tiles on an angle to make it less square. I just cut the tofu block in half lengthwise and then slice the tiles just under a cm thick. Less hassle if you’re not going for the ‘chicken’ look so much lol

I stir fry my tofu in a similar way, but it never occurred to me to dry fry it. I always used oil. Brilliant! A healthy version. Thank you for sharing.

I haven't tried it but I think so! But I am pretty sure cornstarch is gluten free. The brand I use Argo is gluten free

For a more meat like texture “”break”” or “tear” the tofu......into different shaped pieces.
Elissa! Yes! This is totally it. Someone told me about that in a Facebook group and now that I tear the pieces, the sauce really "becomes one" with the tofu
Just to add to this: if you have extra firm tofu, and freeze it the night before, this process becomes easier. You then have to thaw it, and press it in a fiber cloth to absorb all the excess water. Then the pieces are much more fiber-y and have much more chicken texture. It's amazing.

I just subscribed to your channel and I’m going to make this tonight for supper. We don’t have any maple syrup, I know right? A Canadian without we will syrup. I ran out LOL but I do have some local honey so use that. We are not vegan but we are trying To eat a few meals a week that are meatless. I’m going to serve mine with udon noodles and steamed broccoli.

@@PlantifullyBasedI just finished it and oh my the sauce with the sesame was incredible. I didn't have the rice vinegar and corn powder so I improvised with regular red wine viegar and potato starch. It turned out great, thank you for the inspiration !

I have tried it now subbing soy w Bragg's amino acid which tastes exactly like soy but has a ton of nutritional value and i have to say Bragg's works best. tomorrow is with Broccoli.
