In an open environment the 85 is an easy choice. In an enclosed space the 28-70. I love primes but in a run and gun room for wedding or event I will get more shots with the 28-70. It’s not the same look but it looks different than the other zooms. Great tool for what it’s intended for.
I considered getting this lens, but I ended up getting a second camera in stead. That way I can have an 85mm F1.2 on one camera, and a 50mm F1.2 on the other!😆
I actually had both the 85 and 28-70 but sold the 28-70, as I ended up shooting at 70mm f2 most of the time, so I prefer having the 85mm for the best possible look and then have small primes like the RF 50 and 35 for whenever I just can't get what I want into frame. That said for people who only want to carry one lens but need versatility, it's a beast for a zoom lens.
@@tuanminh3720 Even for a proffesional I cann't verify the useness for this weight for photography in nature. Maybe in studio but then again I don't need F2. I love primes if you need low F/stops
This lens is def for the event or wedding photographer. I can go from getting ready in a small room to a quick step outside for portraits or first look to large group shot to details all within minutes on a wedding day. It’s also faster to capture wide and tight shots of a one time moment than using two cameras. For that type of work this thing can’t be beat. If you usually have time and full control of your photos then this lens is probably not for you.
Love my 28-70. It’s my one-and-done lens on the R5, it does everything I want! And if I want to shoot lighter, I attach the 35. I love your images and artistry, I’ve been a fan for years. Your mastery of light, framing and model interaction are amazing ❤️
Love this comparison. No matter how hard they try a versatile lens is always going to have trade-offs. The 28-70 is world class and second to non when you need versatility but it just beat elite tier primes at the same focal length.
Thank you sooo much for sharing! I appreciate the RAW vs Edited comparisons, it really helps me to spend less time worrying about having everything perfect pre-processing, and I'm taking more photos. Thank you Irene
I used to love as much Bokeh as I could get, however my first lens was the RF 70-200. I just got the RF 28-70 a few weeks ago and not just blowing out the background all the time I think is making me a better photographer. Actually finding good locations, good backgrounds, etc, plus if I really want bokeh and compression I'll just shoot at 200mm.
After renting this lens off / on for two years, I finally was able to purchase one last monday.... This and my 70-200 are all I use now from portrait and event photography. I call this lens the Holy Grail lens! But it needs to come with a massage! It is very heavy for a full day of shooting. Irene, you might want to get a Rapid Strap when using your R5 + this lens, it makes moving about so much easier. Beautiful video, lovely model.
Great analysis, thanks... I'll get the zoom for the versatility and because this is just a hobby for me, but agree the look of the 1.2 is definitely better in most cases.
I said the same thing about nothing beating the 85 until I tried the 135 f2. If they release an RF it’s game over. Yea you’ll need space but the shot will be oh so creamy.
Thanks for the comparison video. Because ok the gear is good, very good But, thanks also to the young lady who highlights the 80 and the 28-70 Because there are also humans! And congratulations to you, because you have a great talent for composition, it's undeniable
I have both the 28-70 and 85 DS as they are my dream lens. Specifically went for the DS version so that it's a more unqiue look and don't have to deal with issues of either lens being a replacement for each other.
I looked at this lens when it was first introduced by Canon and was wondering if it could replace my 35, 50 and 85mm lenses. I looked at some of the content on UA-cam of others that were testing this lens and I made up my mind that I would purchase this lens and the 85mm lens. I, like you have a soft spot in my heart for the 85mm. I also like the fact that I can use my 28-70mm f/2 to capture my subjects in the same location and at different focal lengths with one lens. Canon really provided us with a very special tool in this lens. I am glad that I purchased this lens and there is really not much more to say other than I LOVE THIS LENS. Thanks for sharing your experience with this lens.
This was a great comparison between the 85mm 1.2 and the 28-70mm f2 at 70mm. I think that the answer is no. 70 mm at f2 does not have the compression and beauty that 85mm does at f1.2. It’s funny how many people compare these lenses and there is no real comparison. That said, you weren’t really using the 28-70 as a zoom very much and kept it on the long end. I’m guessing that you don’t shoot with a 50mm or a 35mm very often and that’s okay, most portrait photographers probably don’t. Thank you for the comparison and it was super helpful!
You said it perfectly "Super Gorgeous". Another beautiful and great shoot with great information and comparison of which is beautifully shows how both lenses have their strength and weakness, Yet together I'd say they would be a great set of lens to have in the camera bag to captures beautiful gorgeous shots as you have in this beautiful shoot. Love how you captured the beautiful lighting that gave a beautiful bokeh and glow working beautifully with the natural complexion and beauty of the lovely Alina. Super gorgeous shoot and thanks for another beautiful shoot and lots of great information Irene. Keep safe Alina and Irene as may our prayers be answered soon for those of Ukraine and the senseless shootings and war going on around the world. Thanks again Alina and Irene for a Super Gorgeous shoot. 🥰🥰❤❤🙏🙏
I debated over the 85 and the 28-70 for sometime until I saw the your beautiful portraits along with other photographers and that pretty much settled the debate for me.
My 85mm is my portrait go-to. I also have the RF 24-70 f2.8, the RF 70-200 f2.8, as well as the RF24-105 f4. AND I still use my nifty 50mm (EF with an adapter). Each has its use case...no need to shun a lens or relegate it to "the shelf" 😆
Frankly Irene, I personally Don't care what lens you use. I've been watching your work since the day I picked up my cam...and your consistent style and wonderful colour management makes me wonder more and more... So, you're free to do whatever you think is right! f/1.8....f/2 doesn't matter as long as you're behind it.
One of the weakness of the 2870mm f2 is that under certain light conditions it gives haze/softness/ghosting on f2 and some focal lenghts like 50mm and 70mm. I tried different scenarios and results are the same. For example if You focus on eyes and then preview on 100% You can see softness. It doesnt happen everytime but it shows time to time. Still find this lens very versitile and it can stay on my camera body for 95% of the event.
Standard range zooms are complex in general so some "optical issues" are expected. The 28-70mm F2 has 19 elements in 13 groups compared to the 85mm F1.2 with 13 elements in 9 groups.
Irene....thanks again for inspiring us photographers! You always deliver. I enjoyed the images from both lenses, awesome, beautiful photos. But.....I am loving the 85mm 1.2 more.
Honestly I preferred the look of the 28-70 f2 the whole time, but maybe some of that is just that I don't always want 100% maximum background blur insanity in all my photos.
Hi Irene, that my 2 « go to lens », i’m using the 85mm 1.2 for portraits and the 28-70 for weddings/corporate or events in photos and vidéo and for UA-cam too 😉
I shot with this lens before at a wedding event for an hour and for sure its very versatile especially helping out in low light places. But I would never own an RF 28-70mm F/2 because its a HEAVY lens. It's 3 lbs heavy that takes a toll on your forearm and hand later. If you're only doing portrait photography, then its great to use it. But for weddings, events, and parties, I definitely would not use it. I'm at events for 8 hours, 12 hours for weddings and my Zoom lenses already wears me down as we get closer to the last 3 hours. Now today, my most heaviest lens is a 2.5 lbs telephoto zoom lens. I love the idea of an F/2 zoom lens, but the weight just steers me away.
I know you answered 1 year ago, but what you're saying is quite opposite to its real predestination. Yes, it's heavy, hands down. But if you shoot portraits - you do not need 28-70. Portraits photoshoots are usually quite calm and planned environments. So 28-70 is getting all the fame exclusively during __event__ shootings :) Low light, closed space, not enough room to get all your subjects/objects in the frame, dynamic scene, still good background separation (if you need one), etc. Me personally I bought one after 2 years (!) of shooting dance events and constant swapping 35 f/1.4, 85 f/1.4. I was religious L-prime-the-lightest-possible-only-lenses-in-my-possession photographer. Zoom lenses? Pffff.. No-no! NEVER! They are not for creative guys like me! -- that type of arrogant guy. But then when I saw f/2.0 attached to 28-70 something clicked inside me. My heart has melted. And now this lens is fully incorporated into my environment. Even though I do miss the lightness of previous lenses they just are not right tool for my particular task :)
@@olegsafronov9936 At most you're only losing 1 stop of light. F/2.0 to F/2.8 is not a huge jump. Now F/2.8 to F/4 is a huge jump! I prefer lightness over heaviness anytime especially for event gigs. You don't shoot events like I do, then its perfect for you. Like i said, imagine lifting this zoom lenses every minute to capture the scenes? And I can just compensate for that 1 stop of light by either raising the ISO or lowering the shutter speed. RF 28-70mm F/2 is a 3 lbs lens, its a heavy lens. Even my Sony GM 70-200mm F/2.8 is only 2.4 lbs. I use the holy trinity zoom lenses and lightness is what i prefer for i lift my cameras a lot!!
@@harryvuemedia5106 Right, but the point is that people who are considering to start using more versatile zoom, they are not jumping from f/2.8. They are jumping from super light primes f/1.2, f/1.4. So comparing those with f/2.8 - it does make a huge difference. f/2.0 is simply a savior here. Also, feel a look of final picture itself: f/2.8 barely separate background on 24/28 mm for mid/full body shot. But f/2.0 does. Again: it's clear it's heavy as a hell and not for everyone. But it's great it exists.
Right now I bring my 85mm 1.2 and the 50mm 1.2, both really heavy, I would like to have just one lens for travel. But I don’t think I can do that anyways 😂😂 I just love my 85 too much
Great video. Like most people I prefer the 85 1.2 because when it comes down to to it Prime lenses are just a cur above the rest. The 28-70 is as close as it gets but I can tell a difference. I know about 7 years ago I went from shooting on primes to zoom and with the convenience of the zoom I it made me lazy and I found my photography became stale . I still shoot on zooms but Im headed back to primes.
i have almost all the RF lens but this lens is 90% stuck on my r5. For someone that shoot everything from street to portraiture, this lens versatility is just insane.
I believe that each lens has its purpose. You proved it here (yet, again). Even you had some doubt, which is precisely why I carry both 😂. Thank you for another fantastic video. I have to give you immense credit for the ladder idea. I think I thanked you years ago for the idea, but I want to thank you again. Having a ladder with you on a shoot is superb. I'm not a short person, but it gives an entirely different angle. Thank you, thank you.
8:22 Wow love love love! Do you think 24-70mm is unflattering or has a big distortion compared to 50 or 85mm? I see your photos are amazing but I do wonder how is 24-70mm lens for regular ladies (not models or 60-90-60) when lens is set to 50 or 70mm. BTW, not that I'm not enjoying the view but maybe when you do a behind the scenes it might help to see the same composition with a non-model
Its really amazing to see how you shoot against the light without flash on the subject and still manage to light their faces ... Can you give us video tip on how did you do that ? :) thank you!
The cropped format from the 28-70 looks good with the right amount of subject and background recipes. I would personally prefer to have both of them for different type of situations. The context revelation from the 28-70 is right enough if one needs to have a little emphasis on the place where it is shot.. for example , a castle from Scotland as a backdrop?
beautiful pictures and great explanation. Beautiful model, super photographer ... with both lenses A little bit of topic: but maybe a hint: I kept the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L because: Minimum focus distance 0.21m. vs. RF 28-70 2.0 Minimum focus distance: 0.39m (1.28 ft) / 4mm difference in w. / Bulky / expensive / heavy... for some of my work, those are plenty reasons keep the 24-70 and a 85mm 1.2.
This is by far one of my favorite shoots you've done. I kept saying oh that's my favorite shot and I kept watching I pretty much loved every shot in this video. Your work is absolutely magical. Love your videos.
Irene, I love your work. I've always tried to avoid strong backlighting but you have inspired me to experiment with it and so far I love the results! At the very start of the video I was curious to see what lens you were referring to and I have to admit I was surprised it was the F2. The results look great but nothing compares to your shots with the 85mm 1.2. The dreamy background cannot be replaced.
@@IreneRudnyk apologies. I made a slight edit to my original comment while still watching the video. I do appreciate your feedback on the value of this lens and the feedback on my original question.
Hey Irene! I think we talked about this once but my favourite lens since getting my hand on the Canon R5 is hands down the 28-70! I love everything about this lens, from it’s focal versatility and contrast to it’s size and weight. I use it 90% of the time on all my fashion and portrait shoots.
I have had the 28-70 for about 6 months and I love it! It's a beast of a lens! Primes are great, but I shoot events and need a mid-range zoom.
Her hair is more sharp/crisp in the 28-70 especially in the photo where she's sitting in on the tree log
F2 vs F1.2 will do that
Right now I bring my 85mm 1.2 and the 50mm 1.2, both really heavy, I would like to have just one lens for travel. But I don’t think I can do that anyways 😂😂 I just love my 85 too much
I loved this video! Both lens are great in different scenarios
I still shoot on zooms but Im headed back to primes.
the vibe for this shoot felt very Outlander esque, like if the time frame someone went back to was in the late 90s or something
This model is amazing.
The majority percentage of talent and creativity clearly shows here on your video Mam.. Couldn't care less on the lenses, just adore your creation.😍
🥹🥹 thank you!
Marvellous indeed!
Beautiful photos. Loved this video thumbs up.
I love the 85 f1. 2 too
Irene mir gefällt das 24-70mm am besten vom Bokee. Das 85mm zermatscht alles im Hintergrund.📷🤗
Loved the video from 6:36 to 7:05, amazing shoot!
Nice lovely shots! I miss the sunny weather, its always raining here in the Philippines!
Beautiful work!❤️❤️
i have almost all the RF lens but this lens is 90% stuck on my r5. For someone that shoot everything from street to portraiture, this lens versatility is just insane.
And damaging to the wrist lol
Very beautiful photo shoot love your work.
Super informative video, thanks for showing that detailed comparison!
I love how nature accepts to give you such an amazing seat there .
Love the cinematic video, so lovely indeed.
#laddergang :)
3 lens that I plan to buy is 85mm f1.2, 28-70mm f2, and 70-200mm f2.8 but these 3 beast total is ton of money
Great shots Irene.
Wow that lems is huge!
wow, thats a huge lense!! i love it!
Its really amazing to see how you shoot against the light without flash on the subject and still manage to light their faces ... Can you give us video tip on how did you do that ? :) thank you!
Exactly i cant believe such detail is there without the flash
maybe there was reflector. check out catch lights in model's eyes.
or nature things such as water, grass sometimes reflect light
I'm interested in the camera you're using, I like the film color the most is the color of the leaves that the camera reproduces.
Good job Irene!
I really love your photography
beautiful pictures and great explanation. Beautiful model, super photographer ... with both lenses
A little bit of topic: but maybe a hint: I kept the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L because: Minimum focus distance 0.21m. vs. RF 28-70 2.0 Minimum focus distance: 0.39m (1.28 ft) / 4mm difference in w. / Bulky / expensive / heavy... for some of my work, those are plenty reasons keep the 24-70 and a 85mm 1.2.
Beautiful work!
Both are great, but I still prefer the rendering and bokeh the 28-70 produces at 70mm. I will wait for the 135mm, great video
Wonderful review of the great RF 28-70 f2L lens, and the amazing RF 82mm lens too. The RF 28-70 is surprisingly sharp, wow!
Great video.Anyway I have the same doubt if to buy 85 or 28-70.After seeing your video , I think I will buy the Canon 85 1.2 Thank You.
Most of the zoom shots at 70 mm or maybe one or two at 50. Expensive zoom. ^^.
This is by far one of my favorite shoots you've done. I kept saying oh that's my favorite shot and I kept watching I pretty much loved every shot in this video. Your work is absolutely magical. Love your videos.
You're always fantastic. Cheers from Brazil!
It’s so worth it!! I’ve been using it so much lately
@@IreneRudnyk apologies. I made a slight edit to my original comment while still watching the video. I do appreciate your feedback on the value of this lens and the feedback on my original question.
so beautiful... someday i'll become a professional photographer like you... full support from mindoro philippines...
Hey Irene! I think we talked about this once but my favourite lens since getting my hand on the Canon R5 is hands down the 28-70! I love everything about this lens, from it’s focal versatility and contrast to it’s size and weight. I use it 90% of the time on all my fashion and portrait shoots. But after seeing this video, you really got me intrigued about the 85mm… I’m going to have to try it out for myself! Thx for the recce and once again, congrats for yet another awesome video! ⭐️🖤📸👊🏾
Now I just have these two lenses in my bag, it covers everything I need! Excited for you to try the 85, it’s very magical :)
Always the best😍
Thank you for this great film! I think a lens can only be as good as the photographer using it. You are a great artist and I love your films and your paintings! This 28-70 is just great and I wish Sony would make this lens too!
Just out of curiosity, how do you think the Sony 24-70 GM II hold up against the RF 28-70?
