This was my first lens, all the videos on UA-cam say it's good enough, or just bad. Especially with the video capabilities. But I've used it so much and I think it's amazing and underrated for its price point. Thank you for sharing this video!
I haven’t watched any other reviews for this lens and it’s so interesting seeing so many comments saying that other reviewers didn’t like it. I think it’s amazing especially for the price.
@@IreneRudnykI'm glad you agree, I think it's the settings. I have mine on portrait, servo, with continous focus on. Works like a charm, rarely any missed shots
That’s like when people run scientific tests with a Helios 44-1… a creative lens. Is this going to be as good as the $2200 pro counterpart? Of course not, but I’ll be any amount of money 99.9% of people won’t be able to tell the difference. What will stand out more is your ability as a photographer and your patience learning post.
In my opinion if you shoot a lot of studio with strobes, this is ideal since you're most likely shooting at f/8+ and you can even get up close thanks to the Macro capability. And you have the very nice added benefit of it being lighter. A great choice even without mentioning price.
Not just studio, most portraiture shots, including subfields like fashion, glamour, boudoir, various editorial shots, even cinematography... It's all shot usually from f2.8 or higher. One of the best, if not the best portrait and fashion photographer to even walk this planet, Yulia Gorbachenko, if you watch her work, even when shes not using her Phase One camera with strobes, most of her shots are shot at f4 or higher, she rarely goes down to f2.8 and almost never below that, unless she specifically WANTS to obliterate the background, which is almost never, even in her outdoor shoots for Vogue, Elle and so on.
If you're doing studio work, you need as much optical quality as possible. Don't ever think only about the price, consider also the type of work you're going to be executing. Low optical resolution will lead to low quality details, fringing, heavy vignetting which can be hard to remove completly. f8 will only save you to a certain point. These lenses don't cost that much only because of the bokeh, it's also material and optical quality, which matter when you're doing editorials or up-close editing, especially with high resolution sensors.

Great review, this is exactly what I was looking for! Although, I did like the bokeh and clarity with the 1.2 L lens I preferred the photos with the F2 lens. I like more the details in the background. With the price difference and macro, the F2 makes the most sense for my usage.
you are as always gorgeous👏👏👏 I instead opted for the viltrox rf 85 f1.8.... and I must tell the truth I was extraordinarily amazed by its quality and details, the only flaw is the focusing distance is not macro, but for the price it is a lens that does not have to hide in front of the big ones....

Great video! But I have to say that I clearly prefer the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 to the Canon 85mm f/2 that was about the same price when I bought it. I use the Samyang on my RP and I absolutely love it. It´s really a shame that Canon has banned it and all other third party options. Although I had already planned to buy either the EOS R succesor or the R6 Mark II when they might come out next year, Canons decision to not allow any third party AF lenses will drive me to Sony after shooting Canon for over 15 years. It´s pretty sad.
@@sprayfe For my type of photography (Events, Portraits, Architecture - so NO sports or wildlife) the a7IV seems to be quite ideal. I don´t need 20 fps but I totally apreciate 33MP. @@IreneRudnyk The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 is really great for the money (I paid 599 €) and because of the f/1.4 at least bokeh wise way closer to the 85mm 1.2 L (not saying that it´s the same ;-)). Also I´m sure the Canon 85mm f/2 STM for 500$ is a great value, but I kind of guess that also you would prefer a 1.4 over a 2.0 if you couldn´t afford the 1.2 ;-). @irene Rudnyk, I have the F2 lens and I love it. I wonder, did you shoot at same aperture on both lenses (same body) to see difference in quality? F2 vs. F2, F8 vs F8, etc? I am a big fan of your work. Thank you.
Hi Irene, great video, as always. Love it....! I own Canon RP and RF 35mm F/1.8 and thinking to buy a new lens. Great video! I have been debating whether to buy this lens or not... I currently have the ef 70-200 L IS USM (using with eos r)... Is 85mm f2 worth the purchase or would 70-200 be enough? Thanks!
In EF mount went for Tamron 85mm f1.8, and love this. Canon RF 85 f2.0 look good, think at price point I’d want to compare against 3rd party but unfortunately not an option in RF. F2.0 not so reasonable in UK £649, so equivalent to $733, but of course still a much cheaper option than F1.2 which I’d get if had the budget.
I wish you good luck and successond I own a Canon 90D camera. I need a professional lens for video and photos at the same time. What kind of lenses do you recommend?
I have a Canon RP, but I can't take photos like that in the sun, the model's skin is completely dark, what could this be? I'm even thinking that my RP camera was already defective.😢
Bought the canon rp with the 50mm after watching ur video abt em wanted to get the 85 mm rf f2 but finally ended up with the viltrox rf 85mm 1.8 and what a great combo
Great video! I'm coming from a Canon 90D and moving to a Canon R6 Mark II. I have an 85mm 1.8 EF lens. Would I be better off using that lens, purchasing this lens, or the Samyang 85mm 1.4?
so a lens with smaller F stop and Macro capability is less sharp? The 1.2 is 5x the price but still, the other one has Macro capability. Maybe because of the AF of the RP isn't quite good like the R5?
I have shot with the Canon EF 85 1.8. That lens is sharp (REALLY SHARP). I can attest to the fact that a lens can be too sharp. If I had an R series camera I would be happy with the RF 85 F2.
I think the RF 85mm f/2 is very expensive for what it offers and not really necessary. The difference between the RF 50mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/2 isn’t huge, but the 50mm is almost three times cheaper. Sure, the 85mm has image stabilization, but you could get a 35mm f/1.8 with IS for half the price! Or, if someone prefers 85mm, they could buy a used EF 85mm f/1.8 with an adapter, which would be almost the same and much more affordable. Just my opinion! :) And the images from the 50mm f/1.2 or 85mm f/1.2 are definitely better looking compared to the f/1.8 versions… but the prices on those lenses are pretty steep!"
Hello Irene! Hope you’re doing well. As a canon ambassador, what lens would you recommend? I’m planning to buy my very first full frame mirrorless camera which is the canon rp and I am torn between the canon ef 85mm 1.8 and the canon rf 85mm f2. Please i need your tips or insights on this. Thanks for this video. the 85mm is my fave focal length. :)
Hope to see you in Canada soon!
Thank you so much for this helpful video! I definitely want the more expensive lens now, but can't afford it right now, so I'll have to start with the cheaper one and work to save up for the expensive one.
The RF85 F2 is more than enough. People will hardly notice the difference.
Красивые фото. Хорошая работа!
@irene Rudnyk,
I have the F2 lens and I love it. I wonder, did you shoot at same aperture on both lenses (same body) to see difference in quality? F2 vs. F2, F8 vs F8, etc? I am a big fan of your work. Thank you.
Thanks for the comparison and testing.🙏
Canon EOS R is available for sale anywhere
and how expensive...? Can you shoot a good video?
Hi Irene, great video, as always. Love it....!
I own Canon RP and RF 35mm F/1.8 and thinking to buy a new lens. May I know your views whether I should purchase this RF 85mm F/2 over the RF 24-105mm F/4 L lens?
I love macro and portraiture and thought RF 85mm would suit me. But I need the versatality of the zoom lens like 24-105mm. I think this zoom lens will be my go to lens for travel and woukd be good as all-rounder lens.
So, I am not sure which lens to buy, haha. Can you pls give me some advice?
Shooting camera is the best your video which camera shooting at starting
Вітання з Жовківщини. На першому прикладі F2 (talking about aperture) виглядає краще, бо деталі на фоні зберігаються; такий фон навіть не хочеться розмвати. Але не кажу, що бюджетніша лінза краща. Гроші вирішують все) Сам знімаю на Sony a7Iv з поки що кітовою лінзою( Having majored in English, I'm trying to find what to do with my life. Could be that I'll follow in your footsteps.(Not all the way to Canada)
Повністю згідна!
Очень интересное сравнение. Спасибо Вам.
Great video!
I have been debating whether to buy this lens or not... I currently have the ef 70-200 L IS USM (using with eos r)... Is 85mm f2 worth the purchase or would 70-200 be enough?
Thanks!
Can this used on cannon r10
In EF mount went for Tamron 85mm f1.8, and love this. Canon RF 85 f2.0 look good, think at price point I’d want to compare against 3rd party but unfortunately not an option in RF. F2.0 not so reasonable in UK £649, so equivalent to $733, but of course still a much cheaper option than F1.2 which I’d get if had the budget.
Hi Irene, will that lens fit my Canon 90D? Thank you.
I wish you good luck and successond I own a Canon 90D camera. I need a professional lens for video and photos at the same time. What kind of lenses do you recommend?
Can you share your picture style setting please. Raw image look so good
I have a Canon RP, but I can't take photos like that in the sun, the model's skin is completely dark, what could this be? I'm even thinking that my RP camera was already defective.😢
Lovely! Would you ever review the Sigma 105mm 1.4 Art vs the RF 85mm 1.2?
Unfortunately because I am a Canon ambassador, I am only reviewing Canon gear
@@IreneRudnyk OOP. Ok, no worries. Lol.
Thanks for the reply! ☺️
Bought the canon rp with the 50mm after watching ur video abt em wanted to get the 85 mm rf f2 but finally ended up with the viltrox rf 85mm 1.8 and what a great combo
Share your experience please with the viltrox Rf 85
Great video! I'm coming from a Canon 90D and moving to a Canon R6 Mark II. I have an 85mm 1.8 EF lens. Would I be better off using that lens, purchasing this lens, or the Samyang 85mm 1.4?
Start with just using your EF lens with canon adapter, and if that doesn’t work than you can try some RF lenses
@@IreneRudnyk Thanks for responding. I'll probably save up and get Canon RF lenses.
I already have the Ef 85 1.8 does it make sense i go for the RF 85 2.0. It would be on a R6 mk2
05:18 Some say this guy at the background is still walking somewhere
😂😂😂
so a lens with smaller F stop and Macro capability is less sharp? The 1.2 is 5x the price but still, the other one has Macro capability. Maybe because of the AF of the RP isn't quite good like the R5?
I have shot with the Canon EF 85 1.8. That lens is sharp (REALLY SHARP). I can attest to the fact that a lens can be too sharp. If I had an R series camera I would be happy with the RF 85 F2.
Hi. Would you recommend rf 35 1.8 and rf 85 2.0 or 24-70 2.8 instead for my r6 II ?? Please help
I follow you along with other good photographers, I love your photography, I learn a lot from your videos, thank you very much🥰🥰
Thank you for watching :)
Tell me how you took these photos in RP??😊🙏🏼
Is the RP your usual backup camera ? or did you use the RP only for this comparaison ?
R6 is my backup but I love the RP as a budget friendly alternative
I think the RF 85mm f/2 is very expensive for what it offers and not really necessary. The difference between the RF 50mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/2 isn’t huge, but the 50mm is almost three times cheaper. Sure, the 85mm has image stabilization, but you could get a 35mm f/1.8 with IS for half the price! Or, if someone prefers 85mm, they could buy a used EF 85mm f/1.8 with an adapter, which would be almost the same and much more affordable.
Just my opinion! :)
And the images from the 50mm f/1.2 or 85mm f/1.2 are definitely better looking compared to the f/1.8 versions… but the prices on those lenses are pretty steep!"
Irene I want you to review RF 35mm 1.8 lens
I can do that :)
Would also love to see the review of 35mm rf lens. Can wait 😊
What model of lens is the RF 85mm f1.2 l does she use?
Is there a way to lessen the pinkish tone in-camera for SooC jpegs? Anyone can suggest a modification to the white balance?
Excuse me What Software do you use for edit?
Could you make a video of how you edit hair? please 😃
Yes, I would love this too.
Іринка, ти молодець. Я тебе люблю! 🎋🎈😁
Thank you. Really useful content.
Honestly if you're not shooting professionally the f2 is perfect value for money. There really isn't that much diffence between them.
Thank you for your response and more power to your channel. God bless
Depends on what you are shooting....i would get the 85 f2....portraits and macro
How do I transfer photos to the phone in high resolution?
Do you have the models social media info? PS Glad your not all snowed in and can still shoot outdoors.
Omg I totally missed that! Adding her ig right away into the description
I noticed that the F/1.2L got better F-Stop at F/2.8
