  • NCWM CEO/Licensed Battlefield Guide, Wayne E. Motts & Licensed Battlefield Guide, Timothy H. Smith shares a special story. On July 1, 1863, Adam F. Miller fought at Gettysburg and passed the house occupied by Mary Virginia Wade and her sister’s family during the fighting. Wade was the only civilian killed during the battle. Miller was a member of Company, I, 75th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He used his bayonet during the battle to carve his initials in the brick of the building. In 1907, he returned to Gettysburg and 44 years after the battle carved his company and regiment under his name. Both are still located on the house today.
