The biggest and main tag line on top translates to "wouldn't it be better if everyone would just die"? This DVD menu shares the EXACT same tone and energy as that 1997 movie poster.

seidl01 "hey kids! Here are some fun existential questions to ask yourself during the movie! And remember, if you don't feel like killing yourself after your first watchthrough, you're clearly doing something wrong!"
Not to mention the pictures drawn by abused children, the screaming, the eye torture, the living angel mechas driven by child soldier slaves forced to fight for the enjoyment of war profiteers, all that jazz. Yeah, NGE is one of the most vehemently anti-war shows TO EVER EXIST. Hideaki Anno proved with this that he is the David Lynch of anime. So controversial, yet so brave. Art in its purest form, violent and angry, a scream from the void toward the cesspool of filth that we call humanity.
@@dwaterson21 You had me up until the "enjoyment of war profiteers" part. Where did you get that idea from? No one's really making a profit off of the Evangelions as far as I can tell. In fact that's a point brought up pretty often, that the Evas are a massive money sink, and that people in less fortunate nations are starving in order to keep them running. SEELE's ultimate goal wasn't to profit off of a war with the angels. Their ultimate goal was Human Instrumentality. To bring an end to all pain and suffering, all hatred and conflict and fear, to a point where wealth and material needs didn't matter. And that involved combining all of Humanity into a single entity/consciousness. And Gendo's goal was very simple; he just wanted to be reunited with his wife. Again, I'm not trying to come at you rudely, and I sincerely apologize if I come off that way. I just don't really understand where you're getting the idea Eva is anti-war. It's most certainly not pro-war either, but that doesn't really feel a part of its message regardless.
I remember renting this from Blockbuster when I was in 7th grade and just.....staring.....at the DVD menu (side A). The thing is, I hadn't even seen the series before watching DaR so I REALLY had no idea what was coming. It made me feel things that have stuck with me til this day.

Oddly enough, watching Evangelion while I was depressed helped me get out of it. This artform disturbs the ones who are comforted in their lives, while it comforts the ones who are depressed. This show was made by a man who suffered extreme depression during production; and those who feel the same will understand the message Anno wanted to present. I have to say that death and rebirth is probably my top favorite menu from an anime. Of course end of evangelion is my second one too. I remember buying the set from target (I still have it) and no regretting it at all!!

You can see this with some of the shots they left unaltered and especially if you focus on the center of the screnn but I found this detail pretty interesting, especially since I want to recreate everything in this menu (except maybe the text since I'm not sure where to start for that). Another interesting thing (since I mentioned text): The font used is called "Hello Gorgeous Font Trio Serif". The shots/frames they use in the very quick cutaways still kinda get me (the drawings from the second part of the movie, shinji choking asuka, the shot of lilth then the mass graves, the shinji scream, and Gendo saying "The Time Has Come" as Eva 02 activates)

I've never even seen Silence of the Lambs, but I am honestly going to say EOE is the most beautiful and terrifying movie I have ever seen. I only need to see some good old Satoshi Kon films and Goddess bless its soul when it comes out, the third Madoka film and 3.33. :)
You can find analysis of the pictures on the interwebs if you look for it. It's actually from the movie itself, during Instrumentality. Pretty sure the pictures were drawn by kids from abused and/or neglectful households, but I don't have a source for it. Like I said, though--you can find out online. EVA wikis, in particular.

I've never even seen Silence of the Lambs, but I am honestly going to say EOE is the most beautiful and terrifying movie I have ever seen. I only need to see some good old Satoshi Kon films and Goddess bless its soul when it comes out, the third Madoka film and 3.33. :)
Absolutely chilling.
You can find analysis of the pictures on the interwebs if you look for it. It's actually from the movie itself, during Instrumentality.
