I haven't seen the movie for context, but I believe I understand the message about responsibility he is teaching. But wow, no love for his son... Well, he could be worse, he could not live up to his responsibilities as well as no love.
Love is action, not Just words. Denzel wanted to make him realise that he doe love him otherwise he would not be providing for him.

A parent also has a responsibility to ensure mental stability in their child. This can't be accomplished with provisions alone...
Mental stability? You forget the bit about generational traumas and family curses.
underrated performance by the kid in this scene
Facts!!!
Facts, he looked like he was about to cry....voice inflection,.tonation..etc Great Acting throughout!
Denzel is probably the best actor of a generation. He says his lines like its the first time he is saying them...Respect
This is spun to seem beautiful, but truly this is a sad speech by a warped soul. It is his responsibility to do the things he stated, yes… but it was also this man’s selfishness that brought the child into this world. The spectrum of responsibility at that point doesn’t stop at food/shelter, it fully extends to love and care in all categories: mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, etc. I love Denzel, but people need to remember this is a role he’s playing. And the words he’s speaking aren’t something you should equate to “perfect” by any means just because it’s him saying it, or it sounds meaningful. This speech is much darker than I think many are perceiving it to be.
I had a father that raised me the same way, best man I ever had in my life and I respect him even now 10 years after his passing.

Denzel is the finest American Actor.
As I read these comments I see most people are not in control of their thinking or feelings. You are being controlled by the world. To sit and think this word "love" is stronger than fulfilling your duty, you are insane. You are supposed to love everyone not necessarily like them. However if you are zealous to your duty, love is an understatement. Controlling your thoughts is the hardest thing for us to do with all the things of the world throwing stuff at us. Try it. Love is not enough. This scene is deeper than the average mind can process so I overstand why you all are against it.
Because he is the bad guy in the movie. He doesn't love his son, he resents him. He treats his son like trash and justifies it by saying he is doing his duty so the son has no right to complain.
The son grows to hate his father. The father grows more bitter and angry as the movie goes on and eventually dies alone with no loved ones to mourn him.
The entire point of the movie is that feeding and clothing your children is not enough. That's the bare minimum, the stuff you're legally required to do. A good parent provides more, a good parent provides love, affection and support.
The father in the movie provides none of that and it tears his family apart.
Based only upon your comment, You definitely possess a below average mind.
Denzel played a shitty father and a shitty human being in this film.
Any and everything that came out of the hypocrite father’s mouth was garbage, because it was nothing but word salad.
All talk.
He didn’t practice what he preached, so it’s all shit.
I hug my children, I tell them how proud I am of what they have achieved and tell them I love them, every chance I get, because it's how I feel and maybe I won't be here tomorrow.
I want them to remember that I cared, not think I didn't.
Damned good acting though.
"No, I don't like you. I do this because I have to and nothing more." In a nutshell.
Ouch.
People should understand that he's not saying "i love you" in a colder or tougher way. He's just saying I have an obligation, which is still respectable, except he shows no compassion towards his own son. He's raising his son to be just like him. Then, he fights his own son. What a dad.
bare minimum parenting... none of that matters if you tearing down your kid's sense of belonging and self image.

Real Talk. Denzel Washington always plays a good role in every movie he's in. I like his motivational speeches. ✌️
There’s also more to being a parent to a child than feeding and clothing them. Part of that duty is showing them love and affection and fair discipline. That’s how you raise a child into being a well-adjusted adult.
"Love and affection" are modern inventions. It was only 50 years ago that boys were being caned at school and kids were being beaten by their parents. Kids had to grow up a lot faster historically.
I prefer this one than the one who says I love you without taking responsibility
One of the best actors ever captured on film. At what point did he become a living legend? Don't know. Legend.
He's racist against white people
He was born a legend.
I don't care if he likes him or not but he's there for him, he's lecuring him, teaching him and guiding him. That's as important as feeding a child. That's a father.

So...why couldn't he just say:
"Yes Son. I like you. I love you. & I owe a responsibility to you as your Father."
He's trying to teach him that someone can love you and still screw you over. Don't just rely on love. Look at the actions of the person. Are they doing right by you?.
@@hoviksmail But he's missing the mark on emotional neglect. He basically says he takes care of him because he has to, not because he wants to or loves him. He could have made his point while reassuring his son that despite how he has treated him his whole life he loves him.
Idk, I like the lesson as is. The love will be obvious to the boy as he gets older. What's important is to teach him that the world doesn't owe him anything and try to prepare him to survive without consideration for others feelings toward himself. Just worry about yourself and yours, do what's right, be responsible and don't let others take advantage of you
Because life and relationships aren't always so clean and obvious....it's not sweet and heartwarming but what is more important in the game of life...
@@OneEyedCloud01 I see what you are saying, but the point is to teach a valuable lesson to not rely on what others feel about you to validate your worth. Also, to understand responsibility. It's portrayed in a harsh way, Denzel's character is one that is a hardened realist, so I can understand that maybe if this was reality he could have said his speech better, but it's still a good lesson. A wiser person can see that there IS love there, but he just can't say it in so many words. If he truly did not care, he would not be there trying to explain it to his son, even if in a brash way.
It's your responsibility as a father to make sure your sons and daughters feel loved by you. There's more to being a father than making sure they don't die.
Loyalty be damned... Actions speak much louder than words!? You can spend a lifetime serving a nice compliment and passing up those who really love you by their actions!
Responsibility and duty.
Without love it is dangerous.
Parents think food and shelter is enough. Keep that same energy when you in the retirement home bored, lonely and depressed. But aye!, you got food and shelter right.
Spoken like a true child.
@@JC-xh9mp I don't think matching someone's energy is childish. When you treat your children as a burden, don't be surprised when they match your sentiment.
You missed the entire point of what he said. SPECIFICALLY focus on the last little bit where he is telling the kid to not worry about whether someone "likes" you.
Amen.
It's not really the same thing. An adult can form bonds with other seniors, develop hobbies, visit a psychologist, reflect and express their anger and displeasure to their adult children. A unloved and emotionally neglected child can do none of those things. They lack the toolbox that the parents are supposed to help them build

@@mmcknight9485 You can do both. It's not a competition. You can be responsible, take care of your children and love them. When you love somebody you are more likely to be responsible and do right by then. Obviously your dad was just using the word love to manipulate you. Good parents show their love through their actions and their words.
Yes, but a child also needs love. What is a roof over your head without a heartwarming atmosphere? What is food on a table without a parent's smile and supportive words? What are clean clothes without a parent who cares? It's like asking what's the difference between living and being alive and answering with: none- as long as you're breathing.
Remember this a father’s love is a disciplinary love. Tough and hard while a mother’s love is emotional and sentimental.
Being a responsible individual. I've known people to like me or love me and still do me wrong. very wrong, because they weren't responsible for my well being. When you surround yourself with those who fail to be or take responsibility, this scene feels very powerful. Growing up, i didn't know enough about my father to like or love him. He was the responsible one, the one that worked all day and rested to work more. I respected him. I didn't start liking him until i got older and talking to him more as an adult.

Naw fam. My Old Man was just like this, and it's exactly why we don't talk now.
There's a difference between prioritizing whether people like you, *_and wanting love from your father._* Parents, *_and especially Black Parents,_* who talk like this, never consider the thoughts it puts in our head. *_"YOU eat MY- YOU sleep on MY- YOU use MY"_*
Ain't nobody told you to have a kid. Nobody told you to go out there and deal with them crackers and bust yo ass for that kid. You decided that for yourself.
A Man's Job is to provide for his family, yes. *_That doesn't just stop at keeping the roof over heads._*
You wanna get primal with this shit? *_There's a reason Fathers used to teach their Sons how to hunt and readied them to lead their tribe. It didn't just stop at going out, hunting the elk, and bringing it home._*
Probably the best thing Troy Maxson, and a lot of fathers like him did, was be a good template for what you want and don't wanna be when you have your kids. A perfect paradox of *_"He did a lotta bad, but he did good too."_*
i deadass came here to say the same thing.
my father was on this same shit, he didnt give a fuck about us just what other people think of us. he only had a family because it was his "duty" not because he loved my mom and wanted to create a family.
so if u only have a family out of "duty" and only raise your son out of "duty" you were never a parent -- just a benefactor.
let me say that one more time. you not a parent just a benefactor.
i could replace him with a payment.
what kinda fucking father is that?

Sho, you right.
Man gtfoh. Im not a father, mine died before I was born, but my mother talked to me jst like this, still does, n I love that woman to death. Because she is right. Btw. Fathers who took their sons out to hunt was men jst like this guy. So take tht flower child liberal pushy shyt elsewhere
Your missing the lesson he also said "I owe you that" you missed the most important words
He is teaching him about responsibility it's a lesson your missing the Forrest threw the tree's
He still needed his father's love. That's why there are so many broken and strained released between some men and their families. They think they're doing okay because of a roof, bed, clothes, or food
He still didn't do right 👉🏽 by his family. What he did with that other woman, he should have been doing with his family. That's why he died a bitter, broken old man.
Great take, fathers are usually not some feeling-driven crybabies, they do things because they have an obligation to their family!
You HAVE TO like/love your kids. If you're just doing it because it's your duty, you have lost the aim of being a parent. Just because Denzel says you don't have to like your children, doesn't mean it should be that way. Children NEED to feel loved and cared for, otherwise you can just as well be absent.
One thing this movie does is show how generational trauma affects the youth. In the movie, Denzel’s character was mercilessly beaten and neglected by his father, so in this scene he feels like he’s doing the right thing but his son grows to resent him, for completely justified reasons. This is not the person to look up to.
Almost a good message.
Doing something out of duty isn't a fulfilling life.
Loving your family goes beyond providing food clothing and shelter.
Please.
Rest easy James Earl Jones ❤
