I don't want to be rude and don't want annoy anybody but next to the Soviet Armenia anthem this one is preeetty bland. When I started to be interested into anthemology I first heard the soviet version and man, I just loved it! After I heard the old Mer Hayrenik I was a bit dissapointed but as a historian I understand why this one is dear to the Armenians.
And I want to answer for the question how it was possible to Khachaturian to write religiously inspired composition in 1940's. The answer is very typical with what was really happening in that time in USSR. True, Stalin was a dictator and killed a lot of people in his paranoidal state, but still - USSR was never III Reich in terms of culture and inspiration. It was still a country were Prokofeev, Shostakovitch and many others were experimenting with classical music. The country of fighting atheism from 1943 become a "country that propagates atheism but also reinstates traditional cults" by decree of law. As you see, a very peculiar country this USSR was ;)
