OK, so I would think that people here know me better, but a handful of you seem to be upset about a 2 second comment I made at the beginning of this video. Look, that comment was made in RESPONSE to all the folks who decided to complain and sling insults towards Charlie on the Tribute video I did for him when he died. I don't care one way or another what CD's political leanings were...but obviously plenty of people do. My comment was directed towards those folks and letting them know to just concentrate on the music here...it's the same thing when I discuss Ted Nugent here. I only care about his music...what his opinions are matter nothing to me.
Agreed 👍
I'm right there with you, Pete.
I think it just funny or maybe not so funny at all that there are viewers who bitch about politics in this show but it is actually them who start with politics. This is a channel about music and that's exactly what Pete does talk about. It is the music that counts. Let Ted Nugent run around the woods with his bow and go hunting. This is not the platform to discuss it. Here we talk about his music. Charlie Daniels, he certainly had a reason for his political opinion. Do I need to agree to enjoy the fabulous music he and his band created, absolutely not. Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of my all-time favorite bands, have songs with Johnny on vocals were I just cannot take the lyrics. I don't want to have the red, white and blue rubbed in continously. Nonetheless, I love the band and I certainly love the newer stuff as well.
We have some nice saying here: Live and let live - I think this sums it up pretty nicely. So chill and peace out.
Right? I mean Clapton is likewise off the rails, but do we excommunicate him too? (Other than of course for the fact that he hasn’t put out great music in decades. 😎)
Being born, raised and still living in the South, the only comment to add is this. SoT is a channel that celebrates a love for music and the common love we all have for that music. Some differences here and there in people are expected. But rather than try to enlarge any possible differences, celebrate the common love for what we enjoy. Thanks, Pete, for all you and your various co-hosts do to keep us entertained.
1) Saddle Tramp
2) Million Mile Reflections
3) Fire On The Mountain
4) Full Moon
5) Nightrider
I love Charlie Daniels Band music and I'm right with Charlie on the politics. He was a great American!
Charlie Daniels had "weird political opinions." Meaning he loved his fucking country and hated seeing it go to shit.
That’s because they have Southern Hospitality Pete! There are happy hour lucky good ole boys that are straight shooters from the hip!
I remember seeing Charlie and his band on Austin City Limits when I kid.Tommy Crain just blew me away was a big fan from that point on. Amazing guitar team very very underrated. Kudos for shining a light on the CDB.
Tommy Crain, not Billy. Billy was in the Henry Paul Band
@@johnlivingston6162 My bad I corrected it. Cheers
What a fantastic show as always.
Loving both of your reactions and scarconic wit fantastic
good job guys and thank you for putting politics aside for the love of bad ass music!
Exactly!
@@sotdude7 At least 2 of us listened to what you said and meant on this, are they frigin serious lol 😂.
I was fortunate that The Charlie Daniels Band headlined the show the only time I attended a broadcast at The Grand Old Opry in May of 2019. It was a short set, about half an hour or so, but was an awesome way to close out the evening.
Doug Gray another one of those underrated singers! Such a phenomenal singer and performer. Great songwriter too! Not to
Mention the great Toy Caldwell. This is so cool!
Charlie's fiddle on Marshall Tucker Band, Where We All Belong, especially the long jam on "24 Hours at a Time" is just ethereal.
I have to check out this band. Thanx for the recommendations!
1 Fire on the Mountain
2 Whiskey (aka Way Down Yonder)
3 Saddle Tramp
4 Nightrider
5 Midnight Wind
Spot on top choices by Pete and Simon. Fire On The Mountain and Million Mile Reflections were both played so much that had to have the album to play at home and the cassette to play in the car. Like Simon’s similar example, these never left my first car until that car was no more. My preference is for the albums of that time period so can’t add too much excep to encourage others to give these albums a listen. Million Miles Reflection is my top choice today as it has been played more than Fire On The Mountain though that difference is razor edge thin. Thanks for the southern rock shows.
The EQ on "Fire on the Mountain" vinyl was one of the best of all the albums I owned. I used to spin that to test new speakers all the time. Great high end.
Charlie & the Boys really knew how to throw it down 🔥
Trudy is my all time favorite CDB song. R.I.P to a true southern gentleman.
Saddle Tramp, High Lonesome, Full Moon, Me & The Boys, and the underrated Powder Keg. I saw them several times in NY in the 80s - always fun. His vox on “Me & The Boys” was among his best. I And I recall “Bogged Down In Love” from Powder Keg a bit on rock radio.
You guys mentioned the Marshall Tucker Ranking, but I can't find that video on the channel? Let me know if I am missing something. Thanks!
Is it just me, or does Simon remind you of Phillip Seymour Hoffman? Love it when he's on here.
Annnnnnnnnnnd I can never see my dad the same again. cheers for that! ha
Definitely would like to see a simon vs chris alo pairing on a future homework assignment show. Would be a hoot
Great ranking pete and Simon. Saw charlie in 1974 at Central Park
1. Saddle tramp
2. Fire on the mountain
3. Legend of Wooley
4. Million mike reflection
5. Whiskey
Special mention Windows, Honey in the rock, and the volunteer jam albums featuring many great artists including a band called the winters Bros singing a kick ass jam called sang her love songs
Phillip Seymor Hoffman in the co-captains chair.....great show gentlemen
😂, I can’t unsee that now
Hi Pete. Really enjoy Simon's dry Brit sense of humour, never mind his knowledge of music. Have always loved Charlie Daniels. Thank you for this.
My Top Five:
1) Fire On The Mountain (1974)
2) Nightrider (1975)
3) Saddle Tramp (1976)
4) Million Mile Reflections (1979)
5) Windows (1982)
Good choices. I grew up in Jacksonville, FL in the 70s when all the good southern rockers were tearing it up.
Would love to see you guys go through the Marshall Tucker Band catalog.
Coming soon!
@@sotdude7 looking forward to this!!!farm out!!!
Simon Bray's #3 album *Me and the Boys* (released Oct '85) cover reminds me of the gang that Clint Eastwood had to defeat at the climax showdown from the 1985 (released in June) film *"Pale Rider".* Charlie was Marshal Stockburn (played by mainly a cowboy actor John Russell) with his band being Stockburn's deputies. Turned out it was Clint Eastwood's swan song as *"The Man with No Name"* western icon character.
That was the SAME exact reaction I Had! with the Long "Light Brown" Coats or whatever you call them on the Album Cover and Stockburn's (Not Blackburn) Deputies.
Simon doesn't remind me of southern rock fan. Good on him!
he's got a pretty huge collection. I remember as a kid I wore through the VHS copy of the Damn Yankees stuff
Road Dogs is one of my favorite releases by the CDB.
Interesting discussion.
Very cool! Live from Iraq’!
Loved all your selections plus I would throw Night Rider in there as well. For the record I had no problems with his politics.
Me either! I lean right, I will just leave it at that.
Million Mile Reflections and Full Moon are my two go to albums from Charlie and the boys.
Just watched this again cos I needed my Southern Rock fix. C'mon Pete, get Simon on again and give us another Southern Rock video. The Tucker Band or even some less well known stuff like Potliquor, Stillwater, etc
Pete!! Where did you go in the South? I am from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and it is the most beautiful place and there is so much to do! The people are so friendly and welcoming.
They are-I was just poking fun. It's what we East Coaster's do. I've been down south many times.
Great band and a Great person.
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Pete I totally agree. Humidity SUCKS. Where I live what wind chill is to winter, humidity is to summer. That's basically how I look at it. It's also why fall and spring are my favorite seasons.
I am a Lancashire/Cheshire lad Simon 20 miles away from you.
Just saw ZZ Top on Saturday. Really miss Dusty. That being said it was still a killer show. They sounded great!
5. Saddle Tramp
4. Fire on the Mountain
3. Honey in the Rock
2. Full Moon
1. Million Mile Reflections
nice
one of the last concerts i saw was Charlie Daniels & Travis Tritt in 2019
Peter the haters don't matter.. Some get brave behind a computer.. AnyHOOs here is my top 5 of CDB.. #5 Windows #4 Full Moon #3 Night Rider #2 Million Million Reflections (gotta love the Proggy Rainbow Ride) #1 Fire On The Mountain.. (We can give a shit on the leanings.. Just like on other side of the fence would be music of John Lennon.. Damn why can't people just enjoy music and not judge people..)..
Say what you will, the man had some good songs and was an instrumental figure (no pun intended) in southern rock. Gotta say I was happy to hear a shout out for Tom Crain and Taz DiGregorio.
love Birmingham Blues
I enjoyed CDB a lot and certainly think Million Mile Reflections is their best, The only issue that is never mentioned is the fact that the song Reflections is an absolute musical copy of We Used to Know by Jethro Tull/ Hotel California by the Eagles yet everyone seems cool with it
Haven't read through the comments yet but I'm sure I will be in the minority but always loved Windows released in 1982. Still in Saigon, Ain't no Ramblers Anymore, We Had it All One Time, Blowing Along With the Wind. Loved those songs back then and still now after all these years. Rest of the album was pretty damn good too.
I think Windows is underrated.
Actually,Pete, back in ,I believe the late 80's,a respected news anchor/journalist called Loyd Robertson also pronounced ZZ Top as Zed-Zed Top. I actually did a double take when Simon said it!
Forgot to say....in Canada.
I've always had respect for the late Charlie Daniels as a musician. That's what matters to me the most. My favorite track is The Legend Of Wooly Swamp, a scary country fable about greed.
Uneasy Rider 🤘🏽
Saddle Tramp is my favourite but I didn't get much beyond that album.
The self titled 1st record is my favorite
Love that album! Just digitally restored my vinyl copy earlier this year.
39 Miles From Mobile is a helluva jam, and the early version of Georgia is sweeter. Really dig the early version of Trudy as well, but the 2-drummer FOTM version's WAY better for me
Love Southern Rock. Marshall Tucker next?
Good point Pete re Southern rock community Skynyrd use to do this to.
The only album I have from this band is "A Decade of Hits".
But you don't know what you're missing you need to go back 1973 to 1979 and get those albums.
Especially the 1976 saddle tramp
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Thanks. I will do it. I am always interested in new musical experiences. I'm starting in the 70s. 👍👍👍
@@patrickschlosser8208 one thing you'll find especially if you go on UA-cam look at the 12-minute title track to saddle trap 1976.
Before he went to all the Christian Bible belting and the other stuff through the 90s until he passed away what you will find is saddle tramp title track can give to Tucker boys Allman Brothers and more run for their money it is pure awesome southern rock that will surprise many if they've never heard it.
Love Fire on the Mountain and Saddle Tramp. Also love song..this ain't no rag, it's a flag. Great version of Rocky Top on live in Iraq too. Great band!
RECORD FACT: 1st-pressings of Fire On The Mountain had a bonus EP, "Volunteer Jam", recorded at the first of many Volunteer Jam multi-artist concerts. The second Volunteer Jam was filmed and released as a concert movie (later on DVD).
Side One--Volunteer Jam Part 1
Frantic country beat fades in (possibly just finished playing Orange Blossom Special), band falls into a closing for it, but on the 'final' note, a guitar starts a boogie riff that takes over. Everyone gets a swing at their instruments...sort of...it's a 45rpm, so it fades out halfway...
Side Two--1. Volunteer Jam Part 2
...the jam fades back in and continues with Charlie's turn on fiddle. Stitched together it's a fun track, running about 8 to 9 minutes total.
2. Volunteer Jam Part 3
Short but funkier jam. Let's say good sax never hurt anyone...
All those volunteer jam concerts were golden and full of brotherly love
@@DBTdad Yes, each one was a "coming home party" at the end of CDB's tours, probably why the vibe was always warm. LPs of the shows were later released, starting with Volunteer Jam III.
We've got the olds do we care no we don't.
I disagree... drum solos are no where near as dull as bass solos
Showing your political side huh Pete?? Didn't care of Charlie's political views. What did you call it?? Crazy??
Just wondering *DID YOU BRING UP THE POLITICAL VIEWS OF......*
Neil Young??
Bruce Springsteen??
Roger Waters??
John Melloncamp??
Did you Pete?? These musician icons with far-left leaning political views & also are activists. Melloncamp not so much of a wacko unlike the other three. More so than Charlie. Did you bring up their political views & activism doing their top albums videos Pete??
*YOU ALONE, NOT YOUR GUEST,* brought up Charlie's political views and that's a disgrace Pete. *YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT PARDO.* You owe us Charlie Daniels fans, who agree with Charlie's views for a better America. Especially, since Charlie left us last July of 2020. At least Charlie lived his beliefs. More than I can say about that *FRAUDSTER* Bruce Springsteen. Remember?? Jeep & being pulled over for DUI.
