The first 30 seconds is cinematography at its best! The initial uncertainty with the new lady ... the "mock-up" introduction to this episode ... the casual innocent switch of port and starboard ... the let-down: "nothing to report this week" ... and then THE FOOT and impulsive laughter. What cinematographer could do better? Simply amazing. Love it!
Watching them evolve as filmmakers has been incredibly cool. UA-cam has put so many talented pepole on the map in fascinating ways. I think that their choice to sail to the arctic was bold and gave them so many unique opportunities. I'm curious to see how they adapt to more well-travelled places again to keep things interesting.
As a UK citizen who's been fortunate enough to holiday in the Mediterranean since I was a kid in the 1960s and have since explored so much more of it I envy you two. You are at the start of what will undoubtedly be a year or two of amazing exploration and experience. There is just so much to be found - the history, cultures, languages, landscapes, food, architecture, people. I'm looking forward to your first impressions of places that I've known for decades, all my life. Fair winds, Uma!
I remember the first time I went to Snowdon in Wales, and was told it was a 3 hour climb. It took me 9 hours. However, those who did it in 3 missed some of the best views in North Wales. A good climb isn't about the summit. It's about the journey there. Glad you enjoyed your walk it looked fabulous.
What an ENORMOUS tuna! It is so pleasing to know such large fish still exist - and generous of your neighbours to give you some. I had been very impressed with your walk up & around the Mediterranean Steps until that point
I've always wondered what it's like to climb Gibraltar, and I think you are the first sailing channel to show us even though many have been to the Med. Good video, thanks Kika and Dan.
I second that. I too have always wanted to see the trails up the side of the rock. I never knew there were monkeys up there. Maya's a beautiful addition to the boat😍
Thanks for taking the time to share with us. I watch all the time on the TV so commenting is not the thing I do much of. Just felt like letting yall know just how much my wife and I love your videos. We kind of save them up for are miniature date night. Where we will just take an hour or so each week. To just chill and watch are peoples as my wife calls it. Thanks for that !! God Bless
Welcome Maya (Not sure of your spelling) Another great video, I'm really looking forward to the next couple of vids and all your Med adventures!! Stay Safe& Fair Winds!!
Good to meet your friend. Everyone had a great walk about. Me too. The views are fantastic. Looks like there will be lots of Tuna sandwiches. I still don't know about raw fish. Have a great adventure sailing the Med. God Bless
It just occured to me how cool it is that your entered the Med. To us (europeans) it usualy involves a long car ride or we hop on a plane. But few have entered it through the "main gate" Gibralta Strait.
Back in the 70's I was stationed on the rock, and they used to have a annual race up the steps (Army) not sure if they still do or infact have any Army left on the roack, brings back a lot of happy times thank you.
That climb up the rock Dan and Kika was amazing , plus the views wow , and , the last shot inside Uma i thought is that Uma or are they in a rented house it looks huge like the Dr Who Tardis inside , also great to meet you Maya , the Tuna looked delicious
I climbed the Rock before and kept thinking “when are the going to come upon the monkeys?” They have lived there for many generations. Great video! You guys have such fun!
you guys getting good at this . such a all time classic place , well captured . funny ,1/4 tonne of fish in one go ! how many tins of tuna is that !? a couple of years of supplies .
Just a quick caution about eating tuna.I learned the hard way eating tuna every day for a week or more got me mercury poisining. Worst headache I have ever had.Restrict your tuna intake to 3 days per week.CHEERS from Westcoast B.C Canada!
I think it's important for you two to keep in mind when you are talking about all things Mediterranean that it literally means "of middle earth". So in this step you guys walked the steps of middle earth!
So, what will the issues if any getting into Spain for Kika? How cool to have such an "Old" as in you have known each other for so long friend to spend that much time with you and Kika. You can tell Maya and Kika are also good friends!
there must be a cave down there somewhere where you guys have walked...It's where they found the Cro-magnom skeletons of Early Eurapeans who used to live there in those caves.
Watching the Atticus crew kick around the Azores, they point out that 1. it's hard to get your steps on a boat and 2. there are almost no stairs on a boat so going up 100s of meters is quite the challenge. Good work!
Great episode guys x3. I’m impressed your new crew arrived with so little luggage, especially as she had not sailed before. I’ve known people turn up with suitcases…lol. Great hike up,the rock and I’m also impressed the monkeys didn’t steal anything from you as I hear they like to do that. Happy days, look forward to the Eastward journey. Andy UK
The view from up there is fantastic, it was really clear when i got up there in november, could see really well over to Africa and then back to spain :) I took the cable car though :) The monkeys are fun, except when they steal your stuff.
Way back when, the eastern side of the rock used to be covered by what looked like a massive sheet of concrete. My understanding is that it was for water catchment. I have no idea when it was dismantled/removed. but it looks like that Mediterranean Steps path goes over where it used to be.
@@dogsnads5634 Seems to be overgrown and quite indistinguishable. Was clean and bright when I lived there, which is why I thought it had been dismantled.
I remember having to learn to do a blind search, but we had to crawl within 8 inches of the floor with full gear. Oh man I remember the blistered knees!
Wow, that's big Tuna... I think your gonna need a bigger boat! Love me some Poki! BTW, Jordan and Desiree with SV Project Atticus II are also in Gilbraltar, maybe you will bump into them. That would be cool!
So what's with the firefighters starting a search standing up? I did that stuff for about 20 years, and the way we did it was go into the smoke-filled building that we were searching in a crawl, with our arms sweeping out to each side. And one arm would always stay in contact with the wall. that way you would be able to sweep approximately a six-foot wide swath of room. Go up one side and then come back the other side, and you covered twelve-feet of room, which is usually enough to do cover the average residential room. If the room is bigger than that you would make another search with a partner and a rope. The partner would move a distance into the room, staying against the wall, and let out about six or eight feet of rope. The searcher would hold the end of the rope in one hand and "sweep" with the other arm, keeping the rope taught and using your partner as the anchor. Keep doing this after the "anchor" moved eight or ten feet farther. You would eventually cover the entire room. Keep in mind that you would be doing this in smoke so thick that, while on your hands and knees, you would be unable to see the floor. And your sense of hearing would be impeded by the nomex hood you were wearing, and your sense of feel by your thick gloves. That's why the firefighters are practicing with the masks of their breathing apparatus covered over so that they couldn't see. Also I noted that they were not wearing their backpack compressed-air bottles and regulators. Cheating! And most importantly you NEVER did this standing up! Too much probability, going in deaf and blind as you were, of tripping and falling. Then you could be injured or at least be disoriented.....and thus became just another victim. On your hands and knees you just can't fall that far. Retired now. But Damn I miss that stuff!
I'm thinking Helicopter! Lol Makes me think of when Terry anI hiked to the top of the Cloud Forest in Costa Rica and could see the Atlantic Oceon in front us and the Pacific Ocean behind us! But not near the hike y'all made. Sean. Astrophotographer
I'm not sure just when you were in Gibraltar, but I'm viewing this on Oct 27. The delay from when you "published" the video is because we (wife and I) were on a trip to Portugal and Spain. On wed, Oct 19 we were on a tour of Gibraltar. Yes, the monkeys are cute! I recognized Gibraltar at the very beginning when you were crossing the runway. Just for reference, we are sailors also, but prefer smaller "boats", like windsurfers and Hobie 16s. And no, we don't plan to buy a couch.
It is hard to find online, but Porta Mahon was used by the US during the War with the Barbary Pirates. Thus the words, "To the shores of Tripoli". They also say Mayo was invented in Mahon. Like the new crew, almost as fine as the little lady.

Welcome Maya to UMA 🇯🇲🇺🇲👍🏽❤️
Great video. What an amazing opportunity to have your friend sail for her first time on UMA. Looking forward to more episodes.
My missus and I have a great vacuum seal machine , it’s far superior to the Target / BJ wholesale version !
Great smiles - and new smile of Maya. Traveling at moment, thinking about dinner. Tuna sound great for some reason.
You always find the coolest hiking trails. Thanks for taking us along ❣
Loved this episode, so fun when you have a visitor on the boat and get to share sailing with them!

The Med of your childhood (let alone the UK) is in a period of cataclysmic change via mass immigration.

They are already past the orca rudder attack zone.
