As a Brit I always like seeing our Defenders taking on the world. One thing to investigate is the locking differential. It will help on loose and steep terrain. And having been in the army reserve being forced to live in the back of a 110 on military exercises I think you are [expletive deleted] crazy to take this route but I can't wait to see how you get on. If you make it to the UK you should try to make it to our area in Cumbria to drive through the Lake District. You now have the perfect vehicle for it.
As a Brit whose been around Landies for a long time.... (Got a 110 Hi-Cap) She'll take you anywhere you need to go. Few things to remember. If there's no oil under it, it means there's no oil in it. If you're not getting wet inside, it's not raining outside. If it's not fallen off... It's not broken. Happy trails!
Just to stay real: after a month of driving around in this beautiful thing you will have consumed as much diesel as you yould have on Uma for the last 7 years had it been diesel powered. Enjoy the ride!
@@SailingUma I love your content and adventures, and you guys. In the past there has been some preaching about clean energy, probably motivated by your enthusiasm. Cool ride, good for the channel, looks stylish as hell.
The last episode I watched of this was when they were halfway across the North Atlantic sailing through fog, now they’re gutting the boat again? Feels like they just fixed the wobbly keel! I might have to go back a bit, I think I missed a few episodes! Good to see you’re still going guys
Have to say I am kind of sorry to see you going this route. I would imagine you have calculated the impact an overlanding audience can add to your subscriber base or you would not be doing it,, but I hate to see one of the top 3 or 4 sailing channels becoming dual fan base models. I hope it works for you. I have really enjoyed your sailing and boat build videos.
Honestly, that's not how we make decisions. Of course we're always glad to hear when people enjoy our videos, but "growing our audience" is never a goal we journey towards. Fur us, that's just the side effect of creating good videos about things we're passionate about. We only pursue things we're interested in and passionate about and then do our best to make good content around what we're already doing.
Interesting, I guess I just assumed you treated this like a career/job and tried to maximize the return on your hard work. You are both so incrediby talented in your videography, poise and genuineness in front of the camera. I just loved the fact that you went beyond the warm Crribbean island hopping stuff that eveyone does and ventured into the higher lattitudes to give us a glimpse of that and doing it with an electric boat. I guess I was selfish for that uniqueness that I was concerned that ovelanding seems so flooded an ordinary on the youtube platform these days. In any event I will continue to follow you as you pursue your interests as you are so good at bringing us along. @@SailingUma
Trust you guys to find just the perfect vehicle. When you popped the tent topper, i said to myself “of course.” And the completely empty white space inside? 4wheel Uma. Glad to hear she’ll travel with you around the world. The adventure continues.
One year on the road? Around Europe is pretty darn good. But that means Uma repair is another year? Just asking. I will follow you regardless. But I heard you say this. Your nautical skills are pretty much flawless. With some knowledge I say that. So please get back on the water sometime soon. Maybe I can help. I'll become a paid subscriber. You both deserve it. And I just did it. Only for the best.
nice to see that you have a good taste in cars ! land rover is really good platform for offroad camper !! i still recommend that you get a recovery winch for sticky situations, it could be permanently mounted either to the front or back, or it could be removable and able to pull from all directions 👍
Best comment here so far! The number of times a winch is needed will become uncountable very quickly. The rule in off-roading (even very light off-roading), “as soon as you leave the pavement, somebody needs a winch”! If that’s you, and it only happens once, that winch is paid for! Don’t underweight it either; whatever your budget is, get the highest weight rating available, and then buy the winch 2 steps above that…. you’ll never have more winch than you need, but you’ll frequently not have enough.
@@ricktaylor14001 i think 10-12 k lbs winch is going to be enough for this car. i have one 12k winch in a platform and it could be carried to pull from every directions, only problem with this is that with the platform its 60+ kg so it needs 2 people for comfortable moving. but you are correct, dont buy something which should be enough and dont go offroading with a hope that i dont probably need winch😆
Psst... it's called a tow ball. And... owners normally refer to their Landrovers as a "Landy" 😉 And... they're never referred to as "trucks" (unless you're from the US) - they're 4 wheel drives. Keep an eye on the coolant. Landy's are notorious for having hissy fits in the heat!
This is the life!!! You guys won! And she has an awning😮 I suspect you may enjoy van life more than ⛵ life as time goes along❤ excited to see what's next
Hi guys, I'm sure you 2 checked weather forecast before to camp in that spot that could be very dangerous. Those kinds of rivers are able to go from almost 0 to meters deep of very fast running and roaring water in minutes if a storm pours a lot of rain over the mountains even not close to you. Anyway, one more great video !!!
@@SailingUma I'm Italian and I know pretty well how summer weather on the northern "Appennini" could be unpredictable in the summer. I know also pretty well how "not perfect" is the warning system for a damed rivers. At least once a year rescue teams needs to save people camping in locations like that ☹️ and always in the spring/summer time. Anyway, happy you guys feel safe 🙂🙂
Outrageous! Dan & Kika now do overlanding as well. What with interior conversions, sailing and EDC I don't need to subscribe to any other channels now. Excellent choice of rig - I am very much looking forward to see what you do with it.

Thanks for all your previous episodes I have really enjoyed them, but I'm not interested in "bad arse off road 4WD diesel vehicles". It seems Uma's solar/electric credentials have been dismissed. See ya!
At least you CAN work on your own. I think you see Defender owners working on their cars so much because they CAN be fixed, as opposed to just driving it to the shop because you can't fix anything yourself.
Following you for years now you blew my mind with this one. Owing 4 Beneteau’s and 3 defenders in my life I feel like you have the same spirit I have. It is the ultimate toy. For a while I was wondering why don’t they do what sailing Atticus did, buy an other boat? Now I see an amazing spirit and love for adventure you have. Go UMA… Thank you.
Aww, you just brought back the most wonderful memory for me from my childhood of my Mum allowing me to be the one to shift the gears on our VW pop-up camper. Your new addition to the couch-free family is a beauty! Congrats and safe travels both overland and puddle stomping.
Hi Dan & K, Vehicle Roadtrip tip: I have done many many thousands of miles with vehicle sleeping, in multiple types of vehicles. In North America these camping stops in all types of places are now frequently termed "boondocking". Social media has such groups. Often ruining previously great places to stop by over popularizing them. TIP: For privacy, and heat / sun blocking (also cold insulation) of the non- windshield windows I tried many things. What works best for me is actually, simply, modified cardboard. Mine are cut-to fit inserts. Although your new rig looks like there' are no window ledges on which to insert. . But here's the first 'trick'. Paint one side black, and one side white. The black should be not high gloss, nor flat. If you do this well, when it's in your window, from the outside it will look like tinted window glass, and prying eyes are often fooled. You cannot afford indentation 'scratches' which betray the cardboard composition. The white side goes inward at night for brightness and that illusion of space. But during a hot day, you can flip it (or change swap port and starboard panels) to not absorb (reflect) the sun. And with your rig being white painted, it also compliments this. 👁️🌅👁️ And then I discovered a source material box made from double layer corrugated cardboard! Twice the sun insulation. Stout. And I'm so jazzed about it that I've taken to making my own double layer inserts, using either glue, or carpet tape. To cut these, to weird window shapes, use an 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper to get the curves as a template to transfer, and use a power jigsaw instead of the usual boxknife. Sanding block for the rough edges. With your new rig, these cardboard panels might need to be 1-2" larger than the windows, with hanging holes drilled, and internal pegs or screws to slip over. . If you read this, please a quick reply so that I know it might be useful. Arrrr! 🏴☠️🦓🏴☠️
Great addition to the family ! Just in case you didn't know though: wild camping is illegal in a lot of countries in Europe (like Italy and France for example). In most countries they have in designated areas/spots to camp and other times you might have to get permission in advance to camp in places like this.
There is a big difference in "illegal" on paper, vs what is actually allowed locally. For instance "on paper" Spain and Italy both don't allow wild camping. But in Mallorca, you get the police called on you if people see you with an awning out. While in Sardinia it's widely accepted, and thousands of camper vans and tents are everywhere during the summer months. Also sleeping in your car isn't considered wild camping anywhere. But once you pop the tent up or pull out the awning, then your wild camping. The rules are very vague and often not well enforced. And wore case, you get the police telling you to leave or move. It's not like they impound your vehicle or arrest you.
I love it! Yes I will truck around with you guys in this awesome off and on road, Dan-O-Matic mother trucker! I must need to back track on an Uma update. See you next time
Being a Land Cruiser guy, I want to dislike it way more than I do. Awesome rig you guys!! Congrats! You should get an ARB differential locker for the rear so you get at least a real, guaranteed 3wd.
Just a small tip - with a manual gearbox you are not supposed to touch the gearstick if you are not changing the gear. Your hand is not supposed to rest on the stick. Any pressure on the stick while driving will eventually ruin your synchronizes. And you don't want to pay for gearbox repairs, trust me.
Living in a country where flash floods are a thing i can honestly say that no matter where i am I'll never park or camp in a riverbed. You guys are braver than me.
Flash floods don't happen that often in that area in Italy
It depends on the river and the climate. This one happened to be controlled by a damn, so unless the damn blew, we're fine.

You now have the perfect vehicle for it.
as a landrover owner i hope he left the tool kit and plenty of spares . great machine but they need lots of oil covered love. have fun
Following you guys over the years has been heart warming! You are a great couple and awesome entertainers. Keep it going!
As a Brit whose been around Landies for a long time.... (Got a 110 Hi-Cap)
She'll take you anywhere you need to go.
Few things to remember.
If there's no oil under it, it means there's no oil in it.
If you're not getting wet inside, it's not raining outside.
If it's not fallen off... It's not broken.
Happy trails!
There is so much more to see in the world that isn't accessible by sea. Happy trails.
Just to stay real: after a month of driving around in this beautiful thing you will have consumed as much diesel as you yould have on Uma for the last 7 years had it been diesel powered. Enjoy the ride!
It's not really any kind of reasonable comparison to make. It's two completely different things.
So much for the carbon footprint… :)
@@SailingUma I love your content and adventures, and you guys. In the past there has been some preaching about clean energy, probably motivated by your enthusiasm. Cool ride, good for the channel, looks stylish as hell.
and shipping it in a container for adventure! sheesh.
*PERFECT* choice, and welcome to the LRO Bloody Knuckles Pub. Well done 👏
Oh My Gosh the land drover is so cute love the decals!! Needs a name so Uma can be the best friend ❤ you should both be so proud of yourselves
I saw the decals when they first picked it up but then didn’t see them in any other exterior shots..
The last episode I watched of this was when they were halfway across the North Atlantic sailing through fog, now they’re gutting the boat again? Feels like they just fixed the wobbly keel! I might have to go back a bit, I think I missed a few episodes! Good to see you’re still going guys
Yeah, you’ve got about 2 yrs worth to catch up on then.
The adventure continues.
how did you manage all the administrative stuff (registration especially) without residency?
I would grease the screws and put them back, after removing the tow hitch receiver, so the threads don't rust...
Even better, use never-seize.
The plan is to keep working on Uma. But its a big project. And this will take time.
Congratulations!... May your new home always be blessed 😊
Landrover? So great you did not buy a Land Cruiser (e.g. hzj 78), cause I LOVE to see all the repair videos.
Y'all just make me smile so much...cheers to the newest construction adventure!! x
Ah, good ol' landies... you'll love 'em or hate 'em. There's no inbetween.
Love your cinematography! Top notch and i appreciate the effort and skill it takes to make it look so smooth and entertaining.
nice to see that you have a good taste in cars ! land rover is really good platform for offroad camper !!
i still recommend that you get a recovery winch for sticky situations, it could be permanently mounted either to the front or back, or it could be removable and able to pull from all directions 👍
I am sure we will eventually have that addition. But it’s not something we need right now in Sardinia.
You have got the best off road car in the world, look it up the defender is the best. Right now get the boat fixed. I love you sailing.
Ha we don’t need to look it up. we’ve done our research, there is a reason why we searched for this specific car😉
Psst... it's called a tow ball. And... owners normally refer to their Landrovers as a "Landy" 😉 And... they're never referred to as "trucks" (unless you're from the US) - they're 4 wheel drives. Keep an eye on the coolant. Landy's are notorious for having hissy fits in the heat!
This is the life!!! You guys won! And she has an awning😮 I suspect you may enjoy van life more than ⛵ life as time goes along❤ excited to see what's next
Hi guys,
I'm sure you 2 checked weather forecast before to camp in that spot that could be very dangerous.
Those kinds of rivers are able to go from almost 0 to meters deep of very fast running and roaring water in minutes if a storm pours a lot of rain over the mountains even not close to you.
Anyway, one more great video !!!
Yah, my thoughts exactly. One mountain downpour from disaster.
It's Italy in the summer beside a damed river. Unless the damn blew, we're fine.
@@SailingUma We stand corrected. Every year we lose a few to to 'camping in an arroyo'
Outrageous! Dan & Kika now do overlanding as well. What with interior conversions, sailing and EDC I don't need to subscribe to any other channels now. Excellent choice of rig - I am very much looking forward to see what you do with it.
Ha!! We'll sit back and relax. It's only going up from here. We'd love to do more EDC content, Overlanding, hiking, climbing, biking, boating, flying all with their own build out, maintenance tips, kits and load out content. We love that stuff.
I'm Brazilian and I dream of traveling around South America in a Land Rover - it's the perfect car for this type of adventure!
Awesome. I owned a Land Rover years ago in Dawson Creek , BC. They are amazing. Great choice for you two
A Landy without a tow bar is like a sailing boat without a mast that is what they were designed for
Don't throw the hitch away LOL
That’s pretty on brand for them. They transform things for a living, like taking a coastal cruiser and sailing to the Arctic.
I fully Agree. a landy should have one
Ben just said they won’t be towing a trailer, so it’s unnecessary.
@@johnnunn8688 Ben who? They are Dan and Kika. ;)
Such a dream car! Just gourgeous! Looking foreward for the new car vlogs!
Thanks for all your previous episodes I have really enjoyed them, but I'm not interested in "bad arse off road 4WD diesel vehicles". It seems Uma's solar/electric credentials have been dismissed. See ya!
She is such a beautiful truck. Looks brand new and I can’t wait for the adventures to begin! Congratulations guys! ❤
You guys got a Land Rover!!!!!!! better do a a mechanics course !!!! joking apart, well done guys and enjoy
At least you CAN work on your own. I think you see Defender owners working on their cars so much because they CAN be fixed, as opposed to just driving it to the shop because you can't fix anything yourself.
@@SailingUma good comeback guys. Love yer work
Love your pioneering spirit. This put a smile on my face throughout. You guys are awesome!
I’ve been following you guys for all your sailing and rebuilding adventures on Uma, not for land cruising👎 sorry☹️
I see a giant drawer down the middle, holding all of the cooking gear and cooler/frig. Plywood over the wheel wells. Maybe solar panels on the roof.
My favorite sailing channel just got my favorite overlanding car. Best start to the week!
I thought the Defender was new, previous owners really took care of it. Love the new variety of your channel.
great, you have added an Itchy Boots vibe!
Aww, you just brought back the most wonderful memory for me from my childhood of my Mum allowing me to be the one to shift the gears on our VW pop-up camper. Your new addition to the couch-free family is a beauty! Congrats and safe travels both overland and puddle stomping.
Hi Dan & K,
Vehicle Roadtrip tip:
I have done many many thousands of miles with vehicle sleeping, in multiple types of vehicles. In North America these camping stops in all types of places are now frequently termed "boondocking". Social media has such groups. Often ruining previously great places to stop by over popularizing them.
TIP:
For privacy, and heat / sun blocking (also cold insulation) of the non- windshield windows I tried many things.
👁️🌅👁️
And then I discovered a source material box made from double layer corrugated cardboard!
Arrrr!

No, but they’ll fine you up the wazoo in the Balkans. In many places in Europe it’s a sport evading the camping police. 😅
Cool video you guys, good purchase. Look forward to you both in future videos. Look forward to you working on your Cruiser also. Thanks❤
Land Rovers are FANTASTIC! Congrats
The Uma brand shines through, even in a climate buster.
