HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉 The full reaction video, including their 2016 live NYE performance, can be found here 🎥 www.patreon.com/posts/118547854 And in case you missed our other New Year song to round up 2024, here it is (ABBA) ua-cam.com/video/AmcXfVJELwI/v-deo.html
Happy New Year! Thank you for this reaction! This is one of my favorites from their original album. I like the live version much more, and I'm so happy you did it on Patreon. This is one I come back to every year. It's a great way to start the new year. May 2025 be wonderful for all! A bit of context for the A Capella Academy Choir -- It is/was a summer camp for young musicians focusing on contemporary a cappella music. The idea came from Avi, and Avi, Ben Bram (PTX's wonderful arranger, and really the 6th member of the group), and Rob Dietz founded it. Here's some more info I found: their goal was "to create a family of people who can work together to make world-class a cappella music. The camp also offers a training program for music educators and a year-round choir in Los Angeles." I love it that they used this choir for their studio version.
Happy New Year!!🎊 This is my #1 favorite song from them! Hardly anybody reacts to it so I was SO excited to see YOU do it bc of all the dissonance! Imogen Heap is one of my favorite artists and to have an anthem in that style gives me goosebumps. I’ve also sang in a 16 part choir and appreciate the challenges of dissonance and holding your part. They are masters at it!! Their LIVE to this is my favorite LIVE of theirs as well! Cheers to 2025 pentaholics!
One of my favorite Pentatonix songs is Amazing Grace. It always seems to evoke an emotional response, which I attribute to the song itself, AND their powerful performance. Please review this song.
I would love you to react to To The River which was a bonus track on the Target only edition of the 2015 album - to me its one of their best original songs and should have been on the main album - i would love to see what you think of it
Anything ptx and I'm here. LOL love your reactions. I really didn't know this song well, and had forgot about it until this so ill go back and watch their video to hear it straight through. Its been a horrible day and whats better than ptx to raise the spirits and your analysis helps explain everything so well. Now I just hope maybe you'll do eva cassidy in 2025. Lol happy new year, my hairless friend. Thanks for everything you do. Be well.
After listening to both my preference is for the live performance. The aesthetics, watching them interact with the crowd, also just more engaging for me. And 2025, yikes! Not sure where the years go but always thankful for the blessings we enjoy and being able to continue doing so. Thank you for great reaction/analysis!
If you want to squeeze in one more holiday season reaction, there’s a live performance of Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Angels We Have Heard on High, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen with Matt. Kill 3 with one reaction.
Thank you for going over these, it's fascinating to get a glimpse into what they're actually doing. This was one of the best show's I've ever seen. They are so, so much better in concert, which, to my humble ears, is a fantastic thing.
I prefer the live version where you can see them enjoying performing it & interacting with the crowd. I’d like to see you react to the 90’s Dance Medley and for something different The Wizard of Ahhhs a Todrick Hall production starring Pentatonix. It’s a lot of fun & gives Kirstie a chance to shine. Happy New year🥳🎉🎶🎈May you have a blessed year!
I've always loved watching reaction videos, but I have to say yours are the best! I'm a music lover, all genres. However I myself am not musically inclined. So your detailed descriptions of these songs are incredibly interesting and educational. And your physical reactions are so genuine. I especially love watching you react to Christmas songs. As a christian it touches my soul seeing you overcome with emotion. I can't keep a dry eye listening to songs about God. Lights my soul on fire lol. Anyway, thank you for your informative and genuine reactions. I've found so many new artists I'd never heard of. 💜🎵💜
Thanks for the reaction. I think they sang this in 2021 NYE after-midnight also. As you said there aren’t many NYE songs. The lyrics seem very young PTX.
Hapoy new year, Sir! I vaguely remember an interview with Scott where he said this is not actually a "new year" song but which describes that feeling when one recovers or overcomes a challenge in life.
I'm so very glad you reacted to this song! I've been hoping, after all your PTX Christmas reactions, that you'd do New Year's Day as well. Then you reacted to the ABBA song (which I enjoyed very much), and I thought, "Oh, OK, that's the one song that Sir Hairless is going to react to for New Year's. It's a good choice." But I was disappointed. Then I hopped on for my nightly dose of UA-cam and saw THIS!!!! Thank you, thank you! I really don't understand why this song isn't better known; to me it's a perfect sing-along New Year's anthem. Sentimental verses to listen to, a catchy chorus to unify the crowd, and a melody that comes through despite the scrunchy harmonies. Lots of powerful Avi and Kevin, a strong Scott lead, a great choir, and a Mitch moment--my only complaint is a lack of Kirstin. But PTX does this--she gets featured in other songs, and maybe someone else takes the background. (Kevin, for example, doesn't get any big show-stopping moment in "Oh Holy NIght.") I'm using a lot of words to say that, once again, Pentatonix eases my pains, raises my spirits, and simply makes me smile. And so do you, Sir Hairless. Happy New Year.
Love this one so much! They all like Imogen Heap! There’s a picture on Scott’s social media where he and his husband Mark were at an event with her in 2024. I’m still holding out hope for a collaboration with her at some point!
Never heard this - loved the analysis and pushed me over to hear the live video. Can’t believe that was 8 years ago but always great to see Avi. Thanks, so much & great way to start 2025🎉! Have a wonderful New Year, SH!❤
@ Yes - have heard the versions that SH analyzed plus when SH went to see him play in London - he filmed that for us to watch - can’t remember when that was but agree, he was awesome and happy!
This is one of the few times where I prefer the album version over the available live versions. There is so much going on that I din't get the full experience with the live takes.
Love this so much- always puts a lump in my throat for some reason. So beautiful, hopeful and uplifting for me. Looking forward to many more PTX reactions (👏🏻more originals!!! Also how about some Superfruit?) in 2025 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥳!
I know this is unrelated to the video but I would love to see your reaction/analysis to the viral Bells of Notre Dame/Out There barbershop quartet by Ringmasters (the 2017 barbershop harmony society video). As always your videos are quite entertaining and informative!
RE: Pentatonix arrangement endings -- They definitely prefer to end a song suddenly or softly. No big, boffo finishes. It reminds me of the 70s British TV comedy group Monty Python who had a motto of "no punchlines". They would end a comedy sketch by just cutting away to a different sketch or, in many cases, dropping a 10-ton anvil on the performer.
I believe the a capella academy choir is part of the students from the A Capella Academy that Avi Kaplan and Ben Bramm founded. I'm not sure if all of PTX were involved with the Academy, I just don't remember they all did so many side projects.
The other members of PTX were only involved with A Cappella Academy at the beginning, acting as Artists in Residence and performing a small concert for the students. Avi has, however, as a co-founder, continued his solid participation throughout the 10 years of ACA, teaching and doing annual livestreams to raise money for scholarships. Scott did have some involvement in that he chose mostly ACA alumni in forming Citizen Queen and another group I can't recall the bane of off hand with Ben Bram.
Just for fun, here they are performing "Evolution of Beyonce" at the first ACA showcase concert in 2014 (the year the academy was founded). ua-cam.com/video/1Rcrq3Uo2kE/v-deo.html.
Speaking of Imogene Heap, you might be interested in checking out their live performance of Aha! Live at the Star Vista. The quality of the video is not great but Mitch’s performance is bonkers! In a good way😂
For your own fun, there are a couple videos of this song (I think it's the studio version) over "year in review" videos. The first one is on PTX channel, and has video clips of their 2015 experiences: ua-cam.com/video/B1HnVPyCHh0/v-deo.html. The second one is a fan-made video that includes footage from their 2019 tours: ua-cam.com/video/n3sIu7mEYVU/v-deo.html.
Mel B (Scary Spice?) and Carson Daly introducing ptx and in their discussion after the performance comment how with acapella there’s no safety net.. I think I lean towards the live performance for 2 reasons- it’s much easier to distinguish each voice here, and the engagement with the audience is so much stronger live, naturally. There are some songs that get so much of their impact from the music video (say v a fireplace video). Imagine, That’s Christmas To Me, and Aha (although the live that’s heavily requested is a whole ‘nother experience entirely).. but I do prefer the music video to be experienced first. Off to a rough start to the new year over here, but this made for a much appreciated bright spot Thank you & hope your holiday break was loaded with good times with family & friends & chocolate!🎶🌟
So curious about the musical gap between 12:04 and 12:06...deleted comment? Technical glitch in edit? A test to see if we are paying attention? A rarity in your videos so it really piques my interest and speculative imagination!
Good spot! Although it’s not quite as interesting as any of those 😅 I don’t like showing long segments of the song again in the analysis sections as they make my videos even longer Fun fact: if I didn’t edit my videos at all (cutting out every gap between speech, little segments such as this one you mentioned) they’d mostly be between 45mins and 1 hour long! Many little cuts save a lot of time for my viewers 😊 it’s rare I play a long clip that requires cutting (by my process), but was the case here
I hate to admit I don't really like it. It's a bit too electronic for me. There are bits that even sound synthetic to my ears. I am an older person, though, and I struggle with modern production sometimes - so it's certainly me rather than Pentatonix. Edited because I forgot to wish you a Happy 2025. All the best.
I just saw this and thought you'd get a kick out of it. Best PTX beatboxer outside of Kevin. It's only a minute long ua-cam.com/users/shortsLiuAPZbnNEc?si=wcA0X2oJuo49ivNt

A lot of Pentatonix originals seem to be really good at just making one feel happy.
I'm so glad this one won the votes!

Yay! Nobody ever reacts to this song. It's one of my favorites from their first original album.
Happy New Year!
This song always gives me goosebumps.
They do like Imogen Heap. You should check out their cover of A-Ha (and the live version)

They could sing the phone book and I'm sure I'd love it.
Agree 👍
I was going to Like your comment, but my 8-year-old nephew (while reading over my shoulder) asked "What's a phone book?" 😂
*GREAT* way to start the new year! Can never go wrong with anything Pentatonix! Especially their original works. Thank You!
I would love you to react to To The River which was a bonus track on the Target only edition of the 2015 album - to me its one of their best original songs and should have been on the main album - i would love to see what you think of it
Happy New Year! Please do New Rules/Are you that somebody when you have time! ❤
I second this
That album was such a banger
This is one of my favorite Pentatonix songs. I always get goosebumps.
BAM, Sir Hairless! I'm overdosing in a great way! You totally RULE!
Anything ptx and I'm here. LOL love your reactions. I really didn't know this song well, and had forgot about it until this so ill go back and watch their video to hear it straight through. O I think the Pentaholics didn't miss a reaction on PTX by you. I agree a sing-along song. TX for this. Greetings from South Africa

Thank you for great reaction/analysis!
Yes, they do love Imogene Heap! Especially Mitch and Scott!
Every time you mention Imogen Heap I have to smile. Mitch loves her music and in the Superfruit videos spoke about her quite a bit.
This song sort of gives me the same vibes as there original I Rise, its worth a listen as well
I LOVE this PTX original co-written by Scott🎉
According to genius it’s co-written by Scott, Mitch and Kevin. The imogen heap influence is almost always going to be a Mitch influence…
If you want to squeeze in one more holiday season reaction, there’s a live performance of Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Angels We Have Heard on High, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen with Matt. Kill 3 with one reaction.
Happy New Year to Sir Hairless and all fellow Sir Hairless supporters!
Thank you for going over these, it's fascinating to get a glimpse into what they're actually doing. This was one of the best show's I've ever seen. They are so, so much better in concert, which, to my humble ears, is a fantastic thing.
I would love to see your reaction to Pentatonix version of Hallelujah!
Happy New Year! I'm so glad you did the 2016 live performance as well on Patreon, as I find it preferable to the studio recording.

@donnaj9769 I second The Wizard of Ahhhs!! One of my top 5 during the "Avi Era" for sure!! Happy New Year
Totally agree! It's one of my all-time favorites! Not only is the arrangement amazing but the video itself is also fantastic and fun!
I love this song! I play it throughout the year.☺️
Happy New Year everyone.

@ Yes - have heard the versions that SH analyzed plus when SH went to see him play in London - he filmed that for us to watch - can’t remember when that was but agree, he was awesome and happy!
I think the whistle at the beginning, was Avi's dual note sound.
Best way to start the new year Sir Hairless and PTX!
Love your reactions! Here’s to 2025🎉🎉
Such a great song that I totally forgot about!
Happy New Year. I always enjoy and learn when you react to PTX songs. You only have about 100 to go! I’ll be there for every one.
