@@MBStateOfMind , Mr. Benard I love your show. I have been a fan of yours since you were Nico on "All My Children. I think you are a very talented, handsome and inspirational human being. I so enjoy watching you on "General Hospital" as Sonny. And I loved the Mike storyline with Lenny and Phyliss. You were so great with them.
Thanks Maurice for your compassion toward MJ. Every time a man who was close to Michael Jackson was a boy speaks highly of him the media is silent and pretends it doesn't matter. But they give the few corrupt greedy liars who accuse him of horrible things the biggest possible platform. James Bryton is just one of many who tells such a drastically different story about MJ than those plaintiff accusers. It's clear that all honest people who knew MJ support his innocence. Because he was in fact innocent.
This interview was really fantastic. Bryton is an amazing person. All the experiences he had in his life unbelievable. I like when both of you talked about Michael Jackson. Thanks for dong State of Mind 💙💙
I wanted say Maurice, you've been an incredible host. I have never seen General Hospital and I have watched you later through social media. The topic you have touched on on your shows were incredible. I particularly love this one with Bryton James because I was a fan of him when he was on Family Matters, I knew about his love for Michael and I got super excited when he was on YR. I always wondered about his upbringing as a child star and still being able to stay true to himself and surprised that he never experienced any mental health issues. The power of love that was instilled in Bryton James family. I love the fact that he is clear that he does not want to get married or have kids. So many men would not have the guts to say that instead they're going around cheating and breaking hearts and leaving their children to the baby mothers and continue the vicious cycle having children growing up without fathers. We should be proud of men who are honest like Bryton and not put them in a negative light. It's okay to be passionate about a job and still love your life. There is more to life than just being a father and married. Good to see child stars be alive and mentally well and still do the job they love to do. This episode was excellent. Maurice, I love how you shared your stories too. This felt like a conversation between great actors from different generation. I feel that Michael and Kristoff impacted people's lives. May they both Rest In Peace.
i think the KEY and ADMIRABLE point he made, was because he saw the commitment, love, presence, sacrifice and security that his parents gave him!!!!! As Maurice noted, Bryton knew what it took, to NOT just be a parent BUT to parent well, b/c he saw his parents do it right!!!! AND could still grow up and be well adjusted, healthy and not set up, to be abused or taken advantage of nor pushed b/c of his parents' ambitions for him!!!! (There were aspects about MJ that he didn't need to address). He was protected in every sense of the word!!!!!
One of my favorites & u too, Maurice 💚. Maurice thank you for helping to understand MJ and very real discussion about your episodes (please forgive me if I used the wrong term).

@@lkm347 yes my lovely friend, honest and genuine poeple who were close to Michael know and understand what an innocent, kind and a wonderful person he was, so greatful to Maurice and Bryton for this amazing conversation!❤🙏
The tragic part about MJ was that his childhood was completely usurped by his natural talent. His father was relentless with the pressure he put on him at way too young an age. As Bryton said, he NEVER had a normal life. And because of that, it obviously had a detrimental affect on his mental health. Which in turn, opened him up to all kinds of horrific scandal that followed him his whole life...Bryton was fortunate to have had the parents he did. If only MJ's were as honest and present he might have had a very different life and might still be here. Bryton hit the mother load when he landed Y&R. And the way they have written his character, incorporating music into it was so awesome since music has been such a big part of his life. I miss his scenes with Kristoff so much. They were magic together on screen so often. I had the pleasure of meeting Kristoff once at a play in Hollywood and I cherish that memory. He was so open, kind and funny. It is so painful to think about how much he suffered in his life. Thank you for this interview Maurice. 💌💌💌

Maurice you are the only person that I’m comfortable with that knows exactly what I’m going through. You have saved me from myself. Thank you sweet man. 🌹. I think about killing myself every day. I haven’t because I love my family. I hold on for my loved ones.
I love your State of Mind series! I love the interviews and when you have your GH family on, I’m always interested in the stories y’all tell… I think I had a great idea for a guest, either Sean or Mackenzie Astin, Patty Duke was one of the first celebrities to come out with the fact she was manic depressive and one of the first celebrity mental health advocates. Her sons can tell their point of view… I know it might sound a little difficult but EVERYONE knows you… so, I think you can swing it! 😄
Another great episode...now I'll have to go look up who Bryton James played on "Family Matters"...LOL! On the subject of suicide, I have a friend who is a true advocate for suicide prevention, and likes to remind people that 'suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.' God bless anyone who finds themselves in such desperate situations and can't see things that way.
Boy, Maurice....listening to you talk about suicide, and on another episode, you said something similiar. That when a person ULTIMATELY decides to commit suicide, there's nothing you can do. It's a hard issue when you know someone who has. AND I had to work thru my feelings of regret. Sadly I knew of someone else who attempted but by the grace of God he didn't. I am not bipolar. BUT...have had bouts of depression, anxiety that just plagued me!!!!!! AND learned actually that I was prone to ptsd. BUT...what was interesting about the ptsd part initially, my psychiatrist had given me a questionnaire to help me see if I had the propensity to PTSD. The article he gave me, actually used September 11. I knew I struggled more than others. I knew I was REALLY sensitive. BUT...what helped me a GREAT DEAL is the article to see your propensity for PTSD was on to categories. NONE that were pathological!!!!!!! THAT did encourage me. I worked in different situations dealing with a lot of trauma done to others. AND it bothered me, b/c I could see that I ALWAYS had a harder time getting over horrific events. BUT...where the article helped me. I was tested on my creativity and imagination and the other test was on my ability to empathize with others. I SCORED high on BOTH!!!!!!! It actually REALLY helped me with ptsd. AND have and am still dealing with some trauma in my own life. It doesn't surprise me, that actors and musicians and basically any artist have these qualities!!!!! The questions about creativity and imagination were questions like: 1). If you closed your eyes, can you picture what it FEELS to pet a cat or a dog or horse. The questions all engaged around our senses and sensitive people have a tendency to struggle. BUT...we talked about this quite a bit. The article made it clear that these individuals are in every profession. AND the answer wasn't that they shouldn't be social workers, or first responders etc. It wasn't seen as pathology b/c on the flip side, they have a lot to give!!!!!! BUT....it was saying that Employers needed to be aware of this!!!!! I ACTUALLY saw one show on Fifth Estate, I think which is in Canada. AND one young man was diagnosed with bipolar. HOWEVER....it was years later that his sisters seemed something wasn't right. He was seen by a different Psychiatrist in the U.S. and shockingly this Psychiatrist after spending a lot of time with him, felt and his clinical diagnosis, was that this man was falsely misdiagnosed. This Psychiatrist felt like he had PTSD, and that he wasn't bipolar. Slowly, they discovered that he was high in metals in his blood. Now I'm DEFINITELY NOT sharing this b/c I think that you or others don't have bipolar. PTSD is still a mental illness!!!!!! AND I experienced trauma as a child, as teenager and off and on. BUT... it helped me I guess, to less the stigma of it. Meaning I was more empathic and I was more sensitive. I have never acted, only younger in school. BUT...I am a musician. SO...I guess I see how there is two sides!!!!!! HOWEVER...there's one comment I DID want to make about suicide. I had to work this thru, with others, that I am not responsible for those who have committed suicide when I didn't see it. BUT...the last 8 years, I have had times where I struggled. SO...I agree with you 100% if a person is there and they have finally decided!!!!! HOWEVER, the fact that you would at least tell Paula and I would tell my closest friends when I was struggling. That does help. B/c keeping it inside and NOT telling anyone who you are close too is worse and makes it worse. ( I want to be careful that I'm not projecting onto you!!!! ). I don't have bipolar and even wondered at one point. BUT....my Psychiatrist helped me to see that I didn't have bipolar. BUT....I understand depression and anxiety!!!!!!!!! AND...how many times I wanted to just give up. BUT...I knew. NOT telling someone I was close to, when struggling with those thoughts DID help me!!!!!!!! They certainly weren't always around!!!!!! AND....ironically I'd been a youth worker by profession for a lot of my career. I did a paper in University on suicide taking a class called Death In The Family. Our Professor was amazing!!!!!! For my degree this wasn't an elective course. I was shocked along with a friend, when our professor told us, a certain small percentage of ppl, WERE taking the class b/c they were suicidal. Other students could take the course as an elective. We were required to have also a lab. I know that sounds found funny. BUT...in University they were just called that, and it was a social science. BUT basically what it meant. Once a week, I can't quite remember our class was split into two, and he and his intern would lead, really a support group for whatever the subject was about regarding death. I....felt EXTREMELY lucky that when it came to the topic of suicide, it was his turn to lead the group. He was very honest with us. He shared openly that after his divorce, his wife had moved across the country, taking their son!!!! This event and the trauma of not being and seeing his son on day to day basis and not even on weekly basis, he describe a moment that he was in fact going to kill himself. He was driving down a hiway, and planned to pull out when a semi truck was coming towards him. AND he DID just that!!!!! There must have been enough seconds, that suddenly he pulled back in his lane. The compassionate side of me, found it really hard when one student said to him, "Don't you think that was very selfish???" He handled it well, BUT can't remember what he said. Other than what you're saying, the emotional pain was SO EXCRUCIATING for him, that that was all he could think about!!!!!! BUT...we are responsible for our actions and choices!!!!! BUT...when I have struggled with bouts that seem to last forever, it does help me, to say it OUT LOUD!!!!!! That's in part why COVID was SO CHALLENGING for ppl who've never struggled!!!!! Isolation and not saying anything is a trap and one that the enemy, satan himself will hammer!!!!! As well, I would struggle with lies, that I knew weren't from God, but were palpable!!!!!! I felt many times, that those I loved and who loved me, that maybe it would be easier for them, if I wasn't here!!!!!! BUT...I to have a relationship with Jesus and would take these thoughts to God. AND...you're right!!!!! I struggled and sometimes still due, with not seeing an end in sight. From my education and working with youth for decades, I also also wrote my paper on suicide for that class. We were free to choose any topic that related to death, and I chose suicide. I also had to do an internship with my work. AND it included a week conference and suicide again was discussed. I knew from my paper in College and speaking with Counsellors on campus the stages of suicide. Meaning like the signs you were talking about. I KNEW the questions to ask!!!!!! AND...years later, I had to ask someone close to me!!!!!! I NEVER thought I would struggle as much as I did, after my Dad passed away. I was very close to him. He was my rock growing up. He wasn't as healthy as Brighton's parents seem to have been. BUT...other stuff had happened in our family, and I struggled. My physical health also struggled under all the stress. BUT...on many occasions, I have either asked God to take me home. Or I have asked him to help NOT commit suicide. Watching A Star is Born was very difficult and yet it helped me let out emotionally that strong pull!!!!! It's NOT an easy topic by no means. BUT...God says in 2 Corinthians 1 thru Paul, in the first chapter. That he is, "the God of ALL comfort. And the Father of compassion." And that when we go thru stuff, it continues saying that, "....we are able to comfort others with the comfort we have received." I hold some things very tight. I know you are Catholic. I very much take heed of Jesus' words in the Garden of Gethsemeny. The 3 disciples closest to him, he took as he was forced to wrestle with satan tempting him and knowing what lied ahead of him starting later on that nite after Judas' betrayal. He said to the 3 disciples at one point, "The spirit is willing BUT the flesh is week." It's seared my mind and embedded in my heart. SO...as soon as I start to struggle I immediately take those thoughts to Jesus!!!!! He's BIG enough to hear my struggle. And he is kind and compassionate enough to listen and help me when I have given up more times than I can count. Just like Paula has said to you. BUT...God does use people to be Jesus to us!!!! AND he hears and welcomes our prayers of distressed. It's why I love the Psalms SO MUCH!!!!!!
The language used around suicide is so important to help eliminate the stigma. One of the most important is to say “died by suicide” or “killed themself” because they didn’t commit a crime. The people that die by suicide are suffering in a deep dark place that they can’t see a way through it. Please try to use one of these phrases in the future. As someone that has lost a teenage daughter to suicide it means so much to me. Thank you for what you are doing with State of Mind.
When you talk about God and the devil fighting inside you I'm reminded of the Story of Two Wolves attributed to Native Americans: An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” So I definitely try to be mindful and purposeful about where my thoughts are at and my State of Mind!

God bless anyone who finds themselves in such desperate situations and can't see things that way.
A great Actor he is.....👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Boy, Maurice....listening to you talk about suicide, and on another episode, you said something similiar.
The questions about creativity and imagination were questions like:
He said to the 3 disciples at one point, "The spirit is willing BUT the flesh is week."
It's seared my mind and embedded in my heart.
Shana was a receptionist for Gallin Morey Associates, not MJJ Productions.
This should be another good one
Thanks 😊
State of mind can't wait to her from you Maurice and Bryton.
When you talk about God and the devil fighting inside you I'm reminded of the Story of Two Wolves attributed to Native Americans:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.
The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
So I definitely try to be mindful and purposeful about where my thoughts are at and my State of Mind!
A lot of young adults today don’t want to have kids because our society is deteriorating.
That's a reality too but I also think many dont want to express this real viewpoint as it opens up a can of worms
Hi Maurice, a lot of people have his attitude on getting married and having kids, they just don't say it because it's not socially acceptable. My parents died thinking my life was not complete because I was never married or had kids.
Love it awsome
I just love Bryton James❤️❤️❤️
Erkel!! Omg I had no idea lol 😂
LOVE YOU MAURICE!!!! ONLY 1 SONNY AND ONLY 1 JASON!!!!!!
