MAURICE BENARD STATE OF MIND with MICHAEL SUTTON

  • This week I'm joined by Michael Sutton. You may know Michael best from his role as Stone Cates on General Hospital.
Michael was the first actor I ever worked with at General Hospital. We had a pretty immediate connection and he really became like my little brother. Michael got me through some very very tough times during those first few weeks and it was really interesting for me to get his perspective on it.
We also talk about the AIDS storyline, one of the most important storylines in soap history, and the impact that it had.
Since then Michael went on to be one of the best in nightclub promotion, a successful restaurateur and is now killing it as a luxury real estate agent. I am so proud of who he was and who he is now.

This conversation “amongst friends” (which is so evident), had me in tears for 2 reasons.
    1) I see friends that can see each other everyday or every 3 yrs, and still be LOVING friends.
    2) of course, took me back to Sonny/Stone.
The support you two have for each other is beautiful and so impressive.
Thank you gentleman for all of these emotions I’m feeling today. God Bless you both.

Maurice I loved this episode. When you were talking about music and the Beach Boys I loved to listen to them, but I am a total 80s child who found an old soul with 60s music. Loved The Beatles and The Beach Boys and then found my emotional place listening to Janis Joplin, The Doors, and then Elton John, Billy Joel, and the singer/songwriters...my depression and anxiety are helped by music in such a profound way. Listening to Queen and hearing such amazing music. I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder and have since my teens. Music, Acting, Poetry and Writing has been my lifesavers.
Listening to this episode both broke my heart and made me proud at the same time. Hearing about those first days with Michael; hearing that had me in tears. Hearing him say he was worried about his brother and you getting choked up as he was talking about how he wanted to check on you, it was beautiful.

You two have a beautiful story together. For Michael to be that perceptive and on point at such a young age is impressive. He also has a very soothing speaking voice. He could likely talk anyone down no matter what words he used, just with his voice and calm energy. Very nice episode, Maurice.

I love the fact that he used his acting experience to enhance all he did going forward. To me this means he has no ego with the acting thing. So many actors think that's the be all and end all of what they are capable of. It's NOT. The world is full of so many possibilities. And he's right when he said if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. It's what gives you any and every opportunity. What a delightful young man he is. I will always remember how beautifully done the HIV/AIDS storyline was done. But the fact that he took the beauty of that experience and moved on to a different one is so great! Loved this interview Maurice! Sending love & light...🌟

Michael looks great! His portrayal of Stone will stick with me forever. It was a beautifully tragic storyline and it needed to be told in the huge way GH did. I had a good friend around this same time, in middle school, who died from AIDS. He was just 13 years old and one of the kindest souls you'd ever want to know. Love you, Maurice!

Long ago I watched GH faithfully. I remember being in tears during this episode & feeling my heart would break when Stone died. I’m 73 now & still remember that pain, it’s what great acting can do to a person so taken in, that it still hurts remembering that whole episode. Sonny is & was my favorite subject, he wore his feelings so close to the surface, one could see it! As a person who knows depression personally, I understand the emptiness & fear of what’s happening at the time. It was a time separate from my normal life that will effect me deeply always. Once you’ve been there, you never forget , never.

Best storyline ever. So real, so heartbreaking. I cried and cried. The fact that Michael was fairly new to acting makes the storyline that much more amazing. The audience was in mourning when Stone died; that’s how phenomenal Michael portrayed Stone and conveyed this disease with this storyline. And when Robin saw him in the well I was in tears all over again.

Michael Sutton: what a loss to the acting world that we no longer see you on screen. You have that indescribable je ne sais quoi that it is a blessing to be born with and it just flows out of you! I adore you and am so grateful for this show that you have done and how raw and real you’ve made it. You have connected the dots with me. You and I are so much alike and our spouses are very much alike. Thank God we have them and their support because it’s hard to understand mental health because of the many facets that it represents. But they try so hard and it’s because of their efforts that they can find the strength to do so. I have been down the dark roads and at the tender age of 25, on my birthday, I almost was just a memory of this life. I have struggled all these years , as I’m 66 now and still struggling to stand. Some days more than others but it’s something that is always with us. I can say, that I have never felt that particular hellish feeling as I did on my birthday again but it certainly doesn’t mean that I’m free of the grip of struggle of being mentally ill. The one good thing that I learned through my illness, is that I can still be strong, supportive of others, a nurturer. When I look here at the strong connection you have with Michael Sutton and he reveals his dad’s plight, it’s no wonder you’re enjoying such a close bond with one another. He gets it. He gets you because he got his father’s struggle. And you recognize that this man sitting across from you knows you just as well as you know yourself, and vise versa! And that’s a beautiful thing on top of you both being talented actors and maybe because you both have that ability to recognize the struggles that mental health brings being on both sides of the fence. I love and respect that aspect of yours and Michael’s relationship. God Bless both of you. I have another reason to love and admire you both. ❤️❤️

I've been watching State of Mind since the first episode and I've watched them all more than once. These interviews are fantastic and every interview has helped me in more ways than one. As someone who suffers from high anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic overthinking and grew up with a very strict and traditional family I can relate on so many levels. I have also family members who suffer with anger issues and bipolar disorder. So thank-you for bringing all these issues to the forefront they're not talked about enough. On a side note, my mom who passed eight years ago was a huge fan of General Hospital up until her death. Growing up I born was Cerebral Palsy so my bus picked me up from school early everyday and I got home just in time to watch General Hospital with her. I also learned to tie my shoes and my coat while watching it🤣. It was kind of our thing and it was also the last show we watched together before her death. I was nine when you joined GH and I think Stone and Robin's storyline was and is one of the best GH has ever done. Not only did it touch no a subject that most people weren't willing to talk about but no TV network was willing to do it either. As far as the storyline goes I was so impressed how much I learned about AIDS and HIV because of the show. My aunt's first husband I passed away from it about 8 years prior to the episode airing. And years later I ended up working for a company whose son had HIV. It is probably the only storyline on GH to ever connected all the families within the show as it showed how everyone was affected by it not just the main people involved.

I completely agree with Michael that the soap opera was the perfect medium for that story. Having characters in your living room almost every day over a period of years is the closest thing we have to storytelling in real time. The bonds that people form with characters aren't the stuff of an evening or even a week or a season. All narrative art gives people the chance to experience people and places and circumstances unlike themselves, which, in turn, expands their capacity for empathy and sympathy. Doing it over the course of years and even generations is the closest thing we have to mimicking an actual lived experience or relationship with someone, which only further expands that capacity for empathy and sympathy. Suddenly, every viewer felt like they had a personal relationship with a kid who was dying of AIDS - and that, in turn, helped to open minds and reduce stigma. Don't let anyone ever tell you it's "just" a soap as though it were some sort of lesser form of art or entertainment. The daily serial drama format has the potential to be one of the most meaningful formats. This story proved that. Also, there's a lot of misogyny inherent in the denigration of art and entertainment that is enjoyed by and created for women. We should all stop buying into that nonsense.

This was a great episode. I'd never seen it before today & ad you can guess I was beyond excited to see Michael Sutton. A good excited.. but still excited. I hadn't seen him for years. Literally since the Robin & Stone: HIV/AIDS storyline, when Stone died. I LOVED that storyline.. it's still one of my favorites to this day. I was only about 15 or 16 at the time. HIV/AIDS was literally all over the news & magazines. People were literally dying left & right. I remember the big ordeal when Princess Diana was holding the babies in an AIDS hospital when I was a little girl. I remember as well the Real World season that Pedro Zamora was was on & he was a homosexual living with HIV. At the time there was still a big stigma on AIDS. It was a death sentence for those who contacted it. Practicing sex sex is always important but back then it was even more important because it literally could cost your life. Thank God for funding for research at this time because we've learned so much about the disease itself in all these days. Today AIDS isn't the life sentence that it was when I was growing up & I'm do happy & appreciative for that. The Robi & Stone Stone storyline was so pivotal & do needed at the time. I hope all the actors & writers involved realize how important & how they were & how much of an effect you had on so many people like myself. At the time I learned more from watching GH than I ever did from school or or from watching the news. Mainly because it was something that I've enjoyed watching since I was a kid with my mom. I still remember reminding my uncle Mike to record GH for me every day before school lol. Thank you so much Michael Sutton, Kimberly McCullough, Vanessa Marcel,& Maurice, the other actors, & all the writers who worked so hard on this storyline & for educating myself, & many, many more on this important, life threatening disease that effected so many people across the world. Thank you for making it so much easier & enjoyable to watch & learn than it was from school or anywhere else. It was so very NEEDED at the time & I hope you all know how important you are & how much you done in helping fight the stigma of HIV/AIDS. I can't remember many other programs at the time that tackled the subject.. & did it so well at the same time. The writing team did an outstanding job at creating a story that was vital & needed at the time. Fantastic writing. One of the best storylines I've seen in the years I've been watching GH. Michael, Kimberly, Vanessa, & Maurice.. you all were exceptionally good in your performances as a young teenage couple experiencing first love & later dealing with the effects of this disease. Michael, you should've won an Emmy for your performance as a young man literally dying.. & in showing the process of the disease. You made the ultimate sacrifice as an actor hu losing your source of income & livelihood at the time all in the name of educating viewers on a very needed topic. Kimberly your performance was equally amazing & important. Your performance was fantastic. You showed us viewers what it was like & how painful it is to lose not only a loved one but a first love & possibly the love of ones life. The story didn't end there for Robin Scorpio either. After that huge, amazing performance of losing Stone, you showed us the life of a young woman living with HIV.. & educating us viewers AGAIN in Robin's journey. Fortunately for Robin this was at the time where so much was learned about HIV/AIDS & major, life changing treatments began to be available thanks to funding & research. Robin went to college & experienced love again when so many thought that was something she'd probably never experience again considering her health & since her contacting HIV. She eventually became a doctor, & then she found the man she would marry & actually started her own little family. She done this without transmitting the virus to her husband or her babies. All thanks to research again. Maurice you were great in your performance as a best friend & big brother figure for Stone when his own family was nowhere to be found. Sonny paid for the best treatment that money could by, allowed Stone to live & later die in his own apartment.. penthouse. In fact Sonny wouldn't have it any other way because of the love he had for Stone. Those last scenes with Sonny & Stone, Robin & Stone, and Vanessa & Stone were absolutely gut wrenching. Maurice your performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Not only in daytime TV but in all viewing platforms.. prime time TV or even film. Your ability to cry, & express any kind of emotion is fantastic to watch as a viewer. Your range & capabilities as an actor is impeccable. During the HIV/AIDS storyline you were even able to redeem the character of Sonny Corinthos. A character with one of the most vile & shameful past unfortunately.. but because of your acting abilities & "chops" you were able to transform the character into the mob boss with a heart of gold that we all know & love now. Which seemed impossible back then. Thank u all for your very needed performances. U all were so believable & real. Thank you all so much ❤

Maurice, this is a beautiful episode. I especially connected with it when you said how much harder it is to go through certain things when you're already dealing with mental illness. Thyroid patients like me can get all kinds of mental things going on too, like bad depression & anxiety, etc. It happens if our thyroid levels get too high or low, or if the thyroid meds just don't help us right, period, and you've run out of new thyroid meds to try (my case.) I'm going through grief from my brother being gone, and I think it's harder because of my thyroid situation affecting my mental state the way it does right now. Working on adjusting my meds with doctor, but it's still tough.
If you ever can interview anyone who's dealt with the mental health/thyroid connection and had a hard time with it, I think this would help some people. Doctors often don't do enough blood tests to even diagnose thyroid right on people, so that is a problem in all of this, too (and why I'm working on a petition to get better treatment for thyroid
patients, in memory of my brother.) Thank you for bringing such humanity to Sonny, and to State of Mind.

What a blast from the last! Thanks Maurice for a great episode! What I REALLY like about all of this is that we get to see these actors and other famous stars as PEOPLE, HUMAN BEINGS because at the end of the day we are all just trying to do our best navigating though this thing called, life. These interviews and backstories are so fascinating. That whole conversation with Michael about your first manic episode and what transpired behind the scenes was just… Wow!😮 On a side note, every time Michael called you his brother I just smiled.🙂
