Treat it like you're driving your car. They are big on parking, curbing the wheels, putting the parking break on, and turning car off, locking the door. One of my first videos goes more in depth. Check it out.
Well I was told that if you can drive a car, you will do fine. I have been driving since I was 13, I’ve never had an accident or ticket (I’m 54) and I failed it. I loved driving it the very first time. I cruised by the mail boxes, I figured out the mirrors pretty fast and I’ve always been a defensive driver. Why did I fail? Left side parallel parking. Yes. I made the mistake of telling my instructor that I would avoid parallel parking at all costs and I 100% believe that’s why she failed me. I’m not very good at keeping my mouth shut and I paid dearly for it. Please try to listen and not talk. Maybe this will help someone else. Im sure every instructor is different, but who knows how your instructor thinks? It cost me a job I dearly wanted. To be clear, I’m not perfect and I didn’t for a second think I was going to breeze through this. I was nervous and anxious like most people probably are. I hope this helps someone.
I've been an adhoc DSI since 2017. The hardest part about the skills course is the offset parking, and there's a TRICK to it. I won't show/tell the trick unless my 'student' just can NOT figure it out. I show them the trick, and boom, they conquer the hardest part easy. There shouldn't be any 'mind games', this after all is serious business. The instructor _should_ do their very best to help you relax and figure out the LLV. I did almost fail one person 3 or 4 weeks ago. This driver just could NOT do the straight back parking. How do you NOT get that part down? You just drive STRAIGHT back for pete's sake, without running down my cones. We spent 30+ minutes on it...I finally told the driver, "Look, it only gets harder after this! You need to take a deep breath, clear your mind, stop stressing, think about doing this simple task in your own car." BOOM, the driver got it down 3 times in a row with zero problems. THEN the offset part comes along, and she had only one mistake, then did that part 3 times in a row. A lot of it is mindset, and we aren't there to fail you...our job is to HELP you. I enjoy it very much, and do everything I can to help....but, I almost failed that person.
@@solofemaletravelerme We only have 1 promaster on my side of the state, and most of the drivers I train aren't from my office. If they are, and the Promaster is available that day, I _will_ train them, but usually, with only 1, we have to do it a different day. The best advice I can give a new employee is to relax, and remember, if a big dummy like me can do this job for almost 29 years, YOU can do this job. It might take some time, but eventually if you keep at it and let the stress roll off your back, you _will_ 'get it', and the day that happens you'll ask yourself why it was so hard yesterday, but so easy today.
@@abigarrett82 The trick is....1. Turn your wheel all the way BEFORE you start going back. (with this said, I've been to a couple other DSI courses, and their offset parking is WAY easier than mine...maybe mine is too tight) 2. Go VERY slowly. (There is supposed to be a 'time limit', but I ignore it, I'd rather you go slow than go too fast and cause a collision.) 3. Pay attention to the 'pivot point'....where your rear wheel gets almost perpendicular to the cone, then slow down, turn your wheel the OTHER way, and pivot right into place. I wish I could physically show you...Just relax, go slow, and watch those mirrors.

I failed the first driving test. The instructor kept telling me what a great job was doing then we went out on the roads and he got extremely quiet. He kinda raised his voice to me to stay to the right, along the white line. He said he’s been stressing that to me the entire day during the training, he said but i just keep getting close to the left white line. I asked him why he was so quiet, was I not doing so well after all, he said no, Ill need to re take the exam if i chose to. The reason was that I didn’t listen to him and stay to the right white line in the road. Honestly, I think that he was a little unfair bc all he would have to done was tell me “at all times, no matter what stay to the right white line” then I would heave done so. I just did the in class driver training and they said make sure you take the key out before exiting the vehicle. They had a little saying, Curb it, Park it, Brake it, Take it, Lock it. Leaving a key in the ignition they said you'll be let go on the spot. Like in the winter when you first get to your truck they said you get in and stay in the truck while it warms up, then shut it off take the key out, then clean the truck off.
@@solofemaletravelerme The reason for taking the key with you is Roll Away, Run Away RARA accidents. When the truck takes off without a driver in it. If the key is in your hand, and you've properly parked it, (curb your wheels, set the parking brake, put the thing in park, and removed the key), then a RUN away _can't_ happen, and a ROLL away is less likely to happen. These trucks are 30+ years old, and don't have the safety mechanism that requires you to press the brake before they will go in gear like modern cars. So, if your rear end is not in the seat, the key should be in your hand. Simple, and safe, enough.

Hey Nick, Thanks for the advice! I'm just waiting on Orientation email so I can start my journey with the USPS as a CCA. I'm so excited but I am a little nervous about the Llv driving test cause I dont know how to parallel park. Got any advice for that? Will they teach me or will I have to learn on my own?
@@MailmanNick The instructor said that he is not ready to put me on the road yet. But outside of parallel parking he informed me that everything else I did good.
I had a guy that rode me today to nick! I was lapping people on the course and the guy was really nit picking and my road test was like almost 2 hours all through the worst streets near brown university and tightest crowded crazy streets he could find.... over and over...I don't know why he didn't like me or why he picked me to fuck with but I passed thank god... my nerves are shot... shadow day Tom.
OH, and one more thing. If your streets are clear, and have 'tire lanes', you know, where the pavement is actually almost shiny from tire wear...put your nose in the middle of the right tire lane as your driving, and you'll be almost perfectly centered in your lane. Just a little tip from your Uncle Tommy! LOL
@@MailmanNick alot easier than I thought it would be. We covered pretty much everything. Parallel parking, backing in etc.. Nice. I hate the promaster.
Why lol
@@paulholly85 too big i prefer the llv
True hopefully I can manage to drivee it safe I have only driven small cars in the past
@@paulholly85 you'll do great
Hey Nick, Thanks for the advice! I'm just waiting on Orientation email so I can start my journey with the USPS as a CCA. I'm so excited but I am a little nervous about the Llv driving test cause I dont know how to parallel park. Got any advice for that? Will they teach me or will I have to learn on my own?
They let you practice. At least in Chicago they gave you time to practice. Don't overthink is the best advice but be aware.
I had trouble parallel parking with the box truck today. As a result, I failed the road test but I will retake it again this Friday.
It's not easy but doable! You'll get it
@@MailmanNick The instructor said that he is not ready to put me on the road yet. But outside of parallel parking he informed me that everything else I did good.
@@tecxidor92590 research tips how to better park and you'll be golden bro
@MissX33 I wind up passing the road test, but I don't work for the USPS anymore. I now work for the LIRR.
They get bored i think
Did you do it in Providence?
@@jessaleite6509 yes
@@Natescoop8800 I hope they don’t send me that way I know that’s very tight! Any tips on how I passed the llv test? Appreciate it!
@@jessaleite6509 just do what the guy says .... be safe and don't let his comments get to you.....
I’m super nervous test on Thursday I’m a good driver but a terrible parker.
You'll be fine just take your time
How do I make the left turn between the cones
Make a wider turn if necessary. They didn't show you how?
OH, and one more thing. If your streets are clear, and have 'tire lanes', you know, where the pavement is actually almost shiny from tire wear...put your nose in the middle of the right tire lane as your driving, and you'll be almost perfectly centered in your lane. Just a little tip from your Uncle Tommy! LOL
If I'm delivering to a bank or something I always park away from other cars.
Tomorrow I take mine.
I drove an amazon van so I the llv should be easy in so california weather
Very helpful video 👍
For some reason I can’t get it straight when i reverse. In my personal car or any other regular cars i can reverse no problem
Check your mirrors
So crazy lol I literally just got finished with my driving certification like an hour ago lol.
How'd you do?
@@MailmanNick alot easier than I thought it would be. We covered pretty much everything. Parallel parking, backing in etc.. They were serious about not drifting to the left when we went out on the streets telling us if we go over the yellow line twice, we'd fail. But other than that it was pretty straight forward.
@@MailmanNick I have a question, I start my orientation on Monday the 14th of June it said I need to bring 2 forms of ID I have of course my drivers license but my social I lost a long time ago I applied for a replacement card but if it doesn’t come in time could I bring my birth certificate?
@@chuck176 bring your gun license or something like that instead.
@@MailmanNick nick I actually don’t have a pistol permit but I have proof that my replacement card is coming it’s a letter from the social security office from when I submitted to get the replacement card do you think that might be ok
I was freaking out before i drove mine. Now i mob the rural streets and dirt roads 😉😉
Hell yeah lol.
Hi can you tell us what kind of training did you? Thanks 😊
Hey man recently came across your channel and enjoy your content. I’m gonna be starting as a cca my first day is Saturday. Knowing what you know now going on about two years on the job what advice would you give to a new CCA Setting him on the right path. Advice on anything choosing an office location with less routes or more routes?
Comfortable shoes or boots?
There's gonna be hard days but they are what make you or break you. Once you learn the routes this job becomes very easy money.
Can you do a video on how much time you get to do routes? Obviously every route is different but do you know before you start how much time you get to do?
It depends on mail volume and package volume and how long the route is.
I have my road test Sunday, honestly? I don’t think they’re out to fail ppl…I think they just wanna make sure your not a complete dummy!
Facts
Got my CCA driving test tomorrow. 😮
Good luck!
Hi Nick: Where exactly is Academy located? Is it at my local post office?
It's usually at a bigger office near you. Mine was 20 minutes away
Throwback video
Just took my test, I did bad on the road test. It was very tough for me to stay right. I was a bus driver and we were taught to stay left. They still pass me but damn. Everything else was easy but staying right 😂
It'll come with time
@@MailmanNick thank you, it’s a tough job and I didn’t even work my first day yet, salute to you sir
I love your videos and to be honest with you I am very excited about this position but I am very worried about my hearing loss. I am wearing a cochlear implant so I know driving will not be a problem but the orientation class and the driving test is really freaking me out, do you think I will pass all of this? Thanks 😊
One way to find out
Hey Nick on the NACI Form s85. Can you put N/A on the supervisor address and phone number. I do not know them.
Is the llv stick or automatic transmission?
If you don’t pass the driving test, then are you automatically failed? I can drive but my anxiety will be on 1000 …
Ground yourself and take your time. I think you get another opportunity at a later day. They tell you how to drive it
tomorrow i will start my train. although i am a cdl class b driver before, i still feel nervous.
Perfectly normal
Did they make you parallel park
Of course
@@MailmanNick I don’t know how to do they give me time to learn it

How you do
Yo my man on my portal it’s says offer phase ext for a cca position by any chance do you know what does that mean?

@@MailmanNick they sent me the gis motor vehicle background but that’s it
@@kevbrad8237 stay patient. You are being considered.
@@MailmanNick appreciate it just asking my man
Did you have a drug screening??
Bro, I've been working for 5 months as a CCA, and to tell the truth, I really don't like it, If you're married probably your wife is gonna cheat on you, and your kids are gonna take a distance from you, you're gonna be a stranger at your home, and if you are single you won't have enough time to engage with somebody. There are certain things that don't have a price, like your freedom and your family. I don't see myself doing this for the next years.
If I had a wife and kids I'd be working way more. But I'm traditional it's not for everyone
@@MailmanNick You're right bro, it's not for everyone if you think you had been made for something better or if you are "traditional".
Are you still working with the USPS?
My horn doesn't work on most of the llvs at my station 😭
Lol that's not good!
Hey bud I applied for usps cca I got email for gis background for my driving history how soon will it be before I get the job.
Depends but I'm guessing a month or two before orientation.
I’m so so so nervous. Did you take your driving test in front of other people? That’s what I’m most nervous about
No because of covid it was just me and another CCA. 2 instructors.
Don't be you're gonna kill it
I am 52 now and have worked in wearhouse for severalyears and now I wanttolearnsomething different and more rewarding , I guess this job as CCA or RCA would be great for me. How many miles do you drive every day?
I walk 15-20 miles a day. Depends where you're at
Actually I was talking about driving, how far do you have to drive.. I understand that you will have to work 10 to 12 hours a day. Thanks.
@@MrMoises27 depends on the area.

What do you mean without a place
