Bob Murray sued my parents for organizing a protest against Murray Energy's labor practices a few years ago. He sues anyone who challenges him and could give a SHIT about coal miners.
Even if the company went bankrupt because of a lawsuit, the mines it owned will survive if they are profitable. Someone will simply buy them from the present owners (or bankruptcy trustee). Duh.
Absolutely! Now here's some irony for you... The new Coal Museum in Eastern Kentucky will be completely powered by (wait for it) SOLAR ENERGY. You can't make this shit up.
Your comments are accurate and the irony is insane! Great find! But dang haha bob had questionable character-traits but some other people seem to take joy in his passing that seems extreme
Last Week Tonight really deserves way more credit for putting out their closing segments in their entirety, right after it airs. They essentially put their show out for free because they recognize how important their content is, which is honest journalism with a comedic twist.
Dudefromspace567 you do realize that has fallen from 39 percent in just two years. Coal is on the way out. It had its time and now it's over. It is smart to look forward, not backward.
As a result of this video, apparently, "Murray Energy said it received "numerous harassing telephone calls," including from callers who simply said: "Eat Sh*t, Bob."" Bravo, John! XD
Yeah, Mr Murray just guaranteed that more people will be watching this clip. Maybe that's why after just 4 days, it already has 5 MILLION 200K views and 120K likes. What a dumby.
Um PiterburgCowboy, omegasavant is saying that it's not cool to fuck with the employees answering the phone because they're the ones who have to deal with these calls, not Bob.
JoKing find their emails and send them this link maybe they will see it the people that need to see this wont see it or do anything about it if we dont keep shoving these issues in their faces till they dl see it and do something about it
The follow "SLAPP lawsuits" episode describing Bob suing and eventually dropping because of this episode is PRICELESS. Oh man the musical number at the end. Damn John you and your writing staff are geniuses for that one
Oh man, that song. I still remember the first time I saw it. My sister came in to find out why I was laughing like a hyena. Then I showed her, and our Mum came up to find out why we were both howling. The writing in that song, oh my god. Pulled no punches. "He masturbates to Schindler's List" and "He told Hitler to stop painting and to find a new career" hit me hardest.
One of the many reasons I love this show is because John usually gives a possible solution to the issue at the end of the segment. It's great to give facts and opinions, but actually looking into how coal miners could get out of this bad situation (for example) via bitsource (even though these programs are so under-funded and that's bullshit) is really cool. No one ever goes that far in the news industry, and I appreciate everyone who is a part of the LWT team who goes that extra mile. It does not go unnoticed
Paula Choi, to be fair their job is to report the news, not provide solutions to a problem. Granted they can fact check better and have better topics to debate and talk about (not only their fault, they revenue) but they are not required to provide solutions to problems or dig deeper into the topic.
Paula Choi Sorry this guy is a deadbeat, reports fake hateful crap, where's the check he promised to the Trump campaign? I consider Koreans some of my best friends,as the cliche goes, and are very smart people, maybe your not Korean, but if you are so sad you can't see beyond the hypocrisy of this idiot, and why is it that a piece of trash from UK gets to criticize our president ?! He's a girly boy playing you and all low info snowflakes, that's why he talks fast with that annoying accent, he's disgusting and anybody that listens to him is in the same boat, his ratings are down there with CNN!
Um, I think it was HBO that agreed to his idea. Though still, it's pretty amazing that John Oliver was able to convince HBO to take the risk of being sued.
You think that's legendary, I recommend looking up the interactions between an internet personality Jim Sterling and a little company called Digital Homicide. Its well worth the look, and some how even more crazy.
I was born and raised in West Virginia in a "coal town". Thank you, John Oliver. Neither the President nor coal company CEOs care about the future of miners. Oliver is correct, if they cared, they would be finding ways to bring WV into the future, not keep us in the past. I've always believed this. These jobs have literally killed so many of us, my family, my friends, and Trump took advantage of financial desperation to gain votes. To gain votes and keep CEOs pockets lined with blood money. WV should want better for future generations, not ensure future generations have to stay dependent on a volatile industry for their income as is happening now. WV is truly a beautiful state and has so much potential, I hate to see my state hurting, but it won't move forward until people broaden their perspective.
Chastity Boggs Wasn't the coal mining town from October Sky in West Virginia, and it eventually closed down? I was thinking about that throughout this video, and knowing that entire lifestyle and most of a state is lurching toward that fate…
Yes, it was. There is also a book written by Homer Hickam, Rocket Boys, I believe it's called. Coal industry jobs have been on the decline for decades. I remember being a kid and hearing adults speak of job loss my entire life, yet many people still don't see the advantages of working towards other options for the state.
One problem i can see is that its a bit of a daunting task to move from one acupation to another. I would love to see them set up programs where those leaving dying jobs could go back and get college education to allow them to learn and eventually re enter a new market of jobs.
Wilhelma Watson you're absolutely correct. That's why I believe if people truly cared about the well-being of the miners, their families, etc. they would focus more on programs, education, and the like instead of making promises that everything will be great once a certain person is elected. Many younger people are continuing their education past high school now, but unfortunately struggle to find a job after getting a degree. (I know this is a problem many places though not just WV). That's in part due to population decrease as well. Coal jobs go, no disposable income to support other local non-coal industries/businesses, businesses close and layoff those employees, everyone suffers economically, people get fed-up and move. It's a cycle that will be difficult to break but needs to be done.
You got a cease and desist letter and you went ahead with it anyways.... This is why I would take your news over any other "news" program any day of the week. You and your team take on the actual issues that need to be addressed and explained in truth and you don't back down from those who prefer these things are pushed under the rug. Thank you Last Week Tonight!!!
I grew up in a rural community that was built on coal mining. As the mines closed, the community fell on hard times that it never recovered from. There have been talks of re-opening a mine, which many people are in favor of. But there are other ways the government can help communities like mine. Coal is bad for everybody, and mining is incredibly dangerous work. No one actually wants to do it, they simply had no other options. Create better jobs.
Juliano Ciaramello technology, building/housing. um plumbing, I'm trying to think of jobs kinda like mining but not as dangerous. you might have more but you get the point.
"As we have been explicitly told to 'cease and desist' let us do *neither* of those things - and let's talk about Bob Murray!" This is one of those empowering moments that earn this show Emmys on a conveyor belt. Lending a voice to the voiceless and standing up to baseless intimidations of overly rich and powerful companies.
Golden parachute of $80+ million while your now jobless previous employees having nothing to feed their families....you fucking kidding? Half of that money would be enough to help ALL of those employees for a large amount of time.
It's a figure of speech. Sort of like my saying Murray hopes he will be going to hell in a solid gold coffin. However he goes there is fine by me. But if there is a hell for him to go to, he will be "charcoal" in a matter of minutes.
Need to be fair to Sean Hannity here, even though he would not have this kind of courtesy for literally anyone (but isn't that why we are who we are and why he is who he is?): That was his wife he was talking to and about on that stage, not just some random "hot chick."
@@edwardchenock4419 the president that sexually assaulted a 20 something then had his wife try to ruin her life. Plus he had the media slut shame her. I thought you liberals were all about #metoo. Yea I dont think I have to come up with something better
18:47 I actually decided to look up the question "why are birds" just for the sake of seeing what shows up. The answer: conspiracy theories of birds being government drones. Fucking beautiful
On top of this, Oliver and his writers are also protected by the first ammendment, both on the individual personal level and as members of the "press"(use quotes because this is a comedy show first and a news show second.). Any Judge who doesn't deserve to get removed from the bench will throw such a case out. Although in all likelihood, because these will be corporate lawyers against each other, they'll settle out of court.
@Natsume-Hime Umm.. while John didn't commit libel to say that him and his writers are protected by the first amendment as a blanket statement is incredibly naive or ignorant. The first amendment most definitely does not protect you from libel and the Supreme Court has ruled on that many times.
All I want is love. I am tired of politicians, let's teach our children to be good. Have a wonderful week youtubers💕💕💕💕💕watch my videos, you will definitely love it! Have a fantastic life everyone!
Bob Murray once told my dad in a private meeting that he would have spent 2 million dollars to keep him from winning 1. This was after my dad sued the company for 1.2 million dollars after a high pressure underground roof jack exploded and literally shattered his skull, blinding his right eye, and caused him serious mental problems following. This wasn't an accident by the way, Murray tried to save money by not ordering relief valves that would have saved my dad from the horrific incident. Bob Murray claims to be about safety but would rather see many of his workers die then to loose a dollar. My dad got his skull crushed by an exploding hose that was under 14,000 psi when it gave. This is an openly racist man who once said in a meeting that blacks weren't as smart as whites and said that asians were only good for crunching numbers, and that used to pump water in a circle underground at maple creek mine to keep from getting fined because he knew they couldn't inspect it all. John Oliver, please continue to attack Murray so the world can see what kind of monster he really is. These are actual facts that are traceable! This man once told workers in a meeting how to screw people... he said that "you feed the people sweet corn and then when they trust you, you shove the Cobb up there ass" he actually said that. Hell the man demoted my grandfather after 44 years as superintendent of #6 (not official name but that's what we called it) for insulting his son. Keep up with the Murray insults, but I'm serious... he's the kind of man who would have you murdered. I mean this man once called in the FBI to investigate why one of his buffalo died. (it's a tax right off to own buffalo if you have a certain amount of acreage). Lol turns out one of the males horned the other. He's Evil. “Update” Bob is no longer the CEO of Murray energy, the banks own the company now due to Murray’s bankruptcy. He went bankrupt after his business partner died in a helicopter crash and Murray assumed all his debt. The company is currently being run by Rob Moore (another pos but not as bad as Murray) and his son Ryan who couldn’t find his ass with both hands) one might say that the chickens have come home to roost. “Update again” He’s dead. My dad sent flowers and condolences to his wife, being the bigger person is the ultimate victory.
PTRS 45 Well shit. Sorry to hear about your father. It sucks that there's shit people in high places. Hiding behind his money with lawsuits says it all. He doesn't give a shit about the workers who made him rich. I'm glad you won your lawsuit. Sometimes even obvious cases can be trumped by the best lawyer. Tell your dad I think he's the shit. Hopefully you'll show this John Oliver episode to him.
PTRS 45 John should do a whole episode of Bob Murray stories. Seems like there's a lot of incidences of ol' Bobby being a evil ass head ass bitch. John should keep doing stories until Bob gets the boot. Not sure if the whole company shutting down would be a good thing for now. But new management could definitely help. You know. Someone who values human life.
I'm from a rural area in southwestern Pennsylvania (on the border of West Virginia) and there is a massive disconnect from reality in this area regaurding coal. People think that a huge part of the economy is reliant on it and that Obama was single-handedly destroying it through regulations. People think that a huge number of jobs come from coal mining, and many voted for Trump for that reason. I believe more needs to be done to get the word out that coal jobs can't be brought back or even saved for long, and more needs to be done to create jobs for laid off miners.
Robert Stadelman That sucks. Seems some parties tried to scapegoat instead of actually fixing the problem. I can't imagine a whole community going through something like a mini depression in their own area while the rest of the country pays little mind. Hopefully they look through all of the bs and things go back up.
The mining lobby is huge in these area's. People tell you coal is the whole economy and there is no alternative when you are a child. They really believe this nonsense
You might as well try to create a cure for nostalgia. People just do not understand that economy is not like a perpetuum mobile, it's an oil well and it's running dry. You can't rely on profits getting bigger and bigger, you have to face the reality that they will only ever be diminishing. Invention and technological boom cannot be predicted. But the oblivious CEOs will continue to believe that their profits will only keep growing and whenever they aren't growing they start to panick.
@@MF-Productions Yep, and while he gets to keep all his money, $1.9 billion worth of retirement benefits for those coal miners and $152.5 million of obligations for workers’ compensation and health benefits will all be wiped away. I await his lawsuit anyday now. See ya in court, fuckface.
He has now died, ironically of black lung, so...yeah. Some people make the world a better place by living in it, and some by leaving it. The world is now a slightly better place.
I can't begin to imagine how many sites of deadly boring governement reports the staff of john olliver has to read every week to to provide that airtight line of argumentation. Let's take some time to appreciate that. Thank you guys!
Fast Forward Films seriously! They go back 10 years at time! it feels almost impossible to do. I bet they love their jobs though. John Oliver looks like a good boss
Sources that can counter argue his points, please? If you just want to drop the Crowder rebuttal video, then thanks for your time. Here's a participation trophy for you.
No, choose another one not because we 'disagree' with him, but because he is ideologically crazed, bald faced liar divorced from reality caught lying multiple times. If you really do have any arguments worth a damn, not from lying corporate sockpuppet that can only fool people with IQ below room temperature, it should be easy to present them. I won't be holding my breath though, no one sane is willing to repeat the shit crowder does, even your right winger echo boxes think he is nuts...
Mr. Nutterbutter was played by Noel MacNeal (who was also the seagull in the floods segment). He was Bear in "Bear and the big blue house" a show I loved as a young kid. That is the closest the show has gotten to my childhood since Pokemon was mentioned in the Chiitan segment and the segment about third parties.
My family worked in coal for nearly a century. We mined coal, turned it into coke, and sold it to steel manufacturers. Any coal we didn't turn into coke was sold to power companies. We left in the 60's because that was when coal was dying. The problem with the coal industry isn't that it is dying, it's that it's dead. Demand for coal in the industrialized world started going down in the 60's when at the same time companies started automating the mining. Now demand for coal is going down in the rest of the world as well so what little demand was left, China mines its own coal, is disappearing. It's sad that all these people are losing their jobs and that states like West Virginia have put all their eggs in one basket with regards to what industries are in them. The question now isn't "how do we get coal jobs back?" It's "how do we provide new jobs for those in the coal industry?"
If it's not dead it's certainly breathing its last few sooty breaths - heavy automation and no demand... you can puff things up for a while artificially (which could be useful if it was a stopgap measure to help _workers_ make the transition to a new industry), but you can't bring it back.
That is exactly what Hillary Clinton tried to tell them. That those jobs were not coming back and that we needed to retrain them into the solar or wind or anything else industries. The Republicans took the first part of that statement and ran with it. The miners thought she was their enemy, they did not hear the whole plan. The miners were screwed after that. And although it is unfortunate, it will also be the reason Trump will go down. When these poor or out of work folks realize that they have been lied to, once again, by a greedy man, that it was all just sweet talk to distract them while he got what he wanted, elected, they are going to turn on him. Much like the guy that whispers how much he loves you to get you into bed, then runs off the next day because he got what he wanted. You will not love him anymore.
The problem with Clinton wasn't her policy plans. The problem was that she wasn't as good as saying the kind of BS that Trump was willing to say. Trump promised the world to his voters, but I don't think he will be able to deliver.
I grew up in coal country southern West Virginia, and the stance that John Oliver took was very refreshing to see. I am very sympathetic to the miners who are losing jobs because I've seen how badly it can affect people to suddenly be laid off, but it is very frustrating to see so many miners insist that regulations are what are hurting them instead of the natural progression from coal to better forms of energy as well as the transition to surface mining. Coal miners don't need their jobs back, they need help finding new fields to work in because many of them have little education. Trump cutting back funding to programs that do this is extremely disheartening. Everyday I think that there is no way he can make me more angry, but he never fails to one up himself. Coal companies have always been pieces of shit and it's nice to see someone with a large fanbase actually bring this sort of thing to light.
flyingfricks I'm also from southern West Virginia. Watch Blood on the Mountain, it's a Documentary on netflix and it talks a lot about what Oliver does. That clip of Hannity is from the documentary. It's really interesting.

I actually really hope that that miner who wrote, "eat shit bob" on his bonus check eventually saw this piece on the coal industry and was proud that his words got so much attention.
citing public records may not legally count as slander , i think if taken to SC that last week tonight and the studio would easily be absolved of litigation. they did not really say anything that wasnt already previously published...
Yeah, he mostly cited public record & played other media outlets' coverage of Murray's speeches. When it comes to intrinsically ugly wads of human butt-ooze like Murray, there is no weapon like a mirror.
They pronounce the A in appalAchian as an A like in stAy instead of an A like in Apple. As well as pronouncing the 'chian' part like shin instead of chen. Sorry if that was confusing lol.
The part where the company that filed for bankruptcy and petitioned the court to be allowed to stop paying their retirees but give their ceos a fucking bonus pissed me off! This is the reason why America is so divided...I'm so thankful there are people who are not afraid to stand up for what is right! I think a fair reading of his sentence would be that there was an overabundance of creeps at the event, I.E more than he would care to tolerate, rather than that every single attendee was a creep.
Bob Murray did, in fact, end up suing HBO and John Oliver, and just announced today… drumroll… HE LOST! Case dismissed with prejudice, which is another way of saying "eat shit, Bob!"
The judges involved in the case must've been like, "What kinda kindergarten level bullshit is this? If this guy wasn't a highly popular CEO, I would've thrown his ass in prison just for wasting our time." :P
We're still waiting on that briefl understand L. French, kmown as Lawful Masses here on UA-cam is in possession of said brief. l eagerly await the reading. Though l hear it's nowhere as humourous as the Amica brief filed by the ACLU. Which is also available on Lawful Masses.

Ayy Lmao Yes very true, Anderson Cooper is journalism done right, even phillip defranco or Ben sharpio is journalism done right...this is...it's funny.
@@Jemalacane0 I don't know, just about every ecosystem on earth runs on it. If we can get half as good at plants as storing the sun's energy, we'll be in pretty good shape. Hell, coal is the remains of ancient plants, so it's just really concentrated solar energy. Anything that ain't Geothermal, Tidal, or Nuclear is.
MySerpentine it is the power of ancient stars locked into the form of metal, fusion is the same method as stars, and geothermal is a mix of radioactivity and residual heat from Earth’s formation. It really is all solar
@@paulmahoney7619 and wind energy is just from uneven heating of the earth from the sun that causes differences in pressure. Wild that everything comes from the sun. I guess the only thing you could argue that doesnt is tidal because it's mainly just the moon.
I like to think that when the writers get to write a joke about "Who does John look like?", they skip to a meeting room with popcorn and an infectious air of giddiness.
Even if the court ruled that you can sue people for telling you to eat shit, the tens if not hundreds of thousands of people on the internet and on the street defiantly telling bob to eat shit in unison would render that court ruling effectively unenforceable.
I just imagine the daily interactions between the staff of Last Week Tonight and the HBO higher-ups. "Alright, so this upcoming week, we're going to do our larger segment about the Coal industry." "What will you need for it?" "A squirrel costume and a giant cheque that says 'Eat Shit, Bob'". "*sigh* Seems about right."
David Velar He has plenty of money to file frivolous lawsuits against a comedian, yet he can't afford to improve the safety in his coal mines. I'm reminded of this clip from The Simpsons, where Mr. Burns is offering Homer some kind of new job, but says he's strapped for cash and can't afford to pay him much. Cue the ceiling collapsing, and all of Mr. Burns' gold and riches comes pouring down on the two of them.
C'mon, you have to love a country that names an airline after a flightless bird. Seriously, you are good people. Crazy as a bag of...well, flightless birds, but good people.
These things tend to take time unless there's a quick dismissal, so I expect we'll have to wait. But before watching the episode, I saw a discussion of developments in the case at Lowering the Bar, focusing on the ACLU's amicus curiae brief supporting HBO's opposition to Bob's temporary restraining order request. loweringthebar.net/2017/08/you-cant-sue-people-bob.html The linked article provides Kevin Underhill's commentary, including: `To be honest, any brief that includes a heading like, “Anyone Can Legally Say ‘Eat Shit, Bob!'” is going to get a good review from me. Doesn’t really matter what else it says. But it’s a great brief overall.' Additionally, the full text of both HBO's (less funny) brief and the ACLU's are available there. Not everyone's into legal humour, of course, and by now there may be more recent coverage of the case, but I still find this one well worth a look, though anyone who's seen the episode will know a fair bit of the context provided there. Finally, quoting the commentary quoting the ACLU, just because this is pretty amusing for a brief: `“And with regard to the Dr. Evil remark,” the brief notes at page seven, “it should be remembered that truth is an absolute defense to a claim of defamation.”'
"Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel, They tortured the timber and stripped all the land, Well they dug for the coal till the land was forsaken, Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man" -the late, great John Prine
John was literally hoping that Murray would sue him, and the _dipshit actually obliged_ Now I can't wait to see HBO countersue. This is going to be the most awesome curbstomp in recent memory
ty norstrom Murray is a drunk shit at a bar, and John Oliver came in with his gang of lawyers, pulled down Bob's pants, pointed out his tiny penis, then beat the living shit out of him.
apparently this contains lots of factual inaccuracies (i watched louder with crowder - not taking a side ) so it maybe that his claims against murray is inaccurate and therefore libel. also he insulted his appearance which is already enough grounds. truth is ppl like jon oliver dont care ad hominem attacks gets viewers and HBO pays whatever coincidences that arises from the program.
This was truly a tour de force in journalism. Winning that lawsuit essentially corraboted all of Oliver's reporting as indeed... Fact. We honestly need more of this in our country. Thanks, guys.
The economic pain felt in coal towns is yet another reason why a universal basic income is necessary. Many miners are inevitably going to need to transition to other jobs, and many of those jobs will require education (whether trade school or college), and obviously the uprooted former miners and their families still need income even while getting that education. And I'm sure many of them still want to stay in their home towns where there still may not be good opportunities even with education. Having a guaranteed amount of income, even if it's small, would greatly ease the struggle for people working in any industry that experiences a shakeup (which has been a lot of industries during the COVID pandemic, not to mention how that guaranteed income would've made it easier for people to stay home early on in the pandemic and probably would've helped keep things a lot more contained).
Murray just sued Last Week Tonight meaning that Oliver has got him right by the balls. Hopefully this will only attract more attention to his wrongdoings. Keep up the good work John!
lol, suing HBO at this time? When the entire fking world would kill to see the GoT finale? that's really going to go work the public good in your favor Bob. At this point, if HBO told us to jump, we'd all ask how high.
The way I see it.... there was a day when the people making vhs tapes got laid off. There was a day when blockbuster employees got laid off. There was a day when aol employees were told not to come in. There was a day when floppy disc manufacturers went bust. Don’t throw tantrums in the name of progress. Adapt, embrace and encourage it. To protest human ingenuity is to protest human rights.
John Oliver is one of the handful who still are working to keep real journalism alive. Thanks for doing some real research and not be a puppet of political parties.
While John Oliver provides a lot of information, he is a comedian providing entertainment. If you want journalism I find NPR and The Washington Post good sources. There's also a great site called allsides.com that breaks down most major articles between left, center, and right. The key is to get your information from multiple sources.
He is a (political) comedian, yes, but his staff is full of people with backgrounds in journalism, don't be so dismissive. EDIT: I meant to respond to someone else, not sure how this comment ended up here.
delugesofgrandeur you are making it sound like being comedian and a good journalist cannot go hand in hand. His and team's analysis is always based on their own research rather than any news report or some obvious agenda. Seth Meyer etc are political comedians, as they crack jokes on incidents gathered from mainstream media.
Yep. John Oliver surpasses Maher and Colbert. I still have a problem with him smearing Jill Stein. He is not progressive enough to me, but I still like his show.
@@shldnfr Wow. I remember in one of his pieces telling his Green Card experiences and the constant fear he had as a non-citizen. I sincirely hope that since end of January he can sleep well ^^
It's not an issue of fear of progress. It's an issue of where are these coal miners gonna go when they're put out of work? Their communities don't offer any other opportunities. It's coal, or the poorhouse.
allthatishere that shit was one of the best punch lines i've ever heard in my life alongside "Thatcher in the rye". Fucking John Oliver is on fire lately.
ksonhv the sad part is the person that actually wrote that joke will probably never be known. And gets paid a fraction of what John Olivier makes. I'd like to see an episode on that injustice!
A lot of these people are actually very successful and make a lot of money. Actually these people tend to have great careers... for example steven colbert, john oliver, steve carell, jeff ross, samantha bee, and dave attell were all on john stewarts show in the 90's and early 2000's and that helped boost their careers.
This segment is incredibly well done, one of his best so far I think, simply because it's so moderate and recognizes the argument flaws on BOTH sides. Most people brush aside the whole loss of jobs when they hear that more jobs are in clean energy anyways. I have to admit I never before thought about WHERE clean energy jobs would be, only the amount of jobs created. Made me consider a lot of things. Also, 'google it' had me dying.
BombedOut to be fair I think one of the big reasons why there aren't many clean energy jobs in those parts partially because there are already coal mining jobs there. When one industry collapses another will inevitably move in
robert hebert But that begs the question, what do people do in the meantime? If there's no community left by the time they start setting up, then there's no point.
Because they live in the past. They're stuck in a crazy time warp and the rest of the world has moved on without them. You'd think it was the future too if it was all you'd ever known.
Well when you waste all your airtime demonizing things like video games and dungeons and dragons there isn’t much time left to provide actual facts Clarification: Not talking about Mr Oliver’s show, talking about most other news outlets.
And that's why I for one don't tune into the crap on the news anymore. There isn't ANY news to report. Just what to be scared of.....And who's to blame for it.
yeah, that´s why they hired actual investigative journalists. They have a good salary, benefits from a major company, etc. They research each episode months in advance.
@@Maniac536 agreed...Ironic how guys like Oliver, Stewart, Colbert, and Noah all provide better news on major world issues and crises than major news networks...😡I'm looking at you Fox News...ok actually I'm looking at all you networks...for shame
Would like to see a segment on shipyard workers down south around the gulf. There have been people's lives destroyed and even lost due to the negligence of their companies. The government does give out fines but those are nothing compared to the millions they then hand out for battleships.
Eh, not really. Atheism (the opiate of Western White males that killed 150 million people in the 20th century alone) is dying out demographically, while at the same time East Europe, Africa, Asia and South America are in the midst of a religious awakening. China alone is projected to go from 80-100 million Christians in 2017 to 700-800 million Christians by the end of the century, if the current conversion rate remains the same. The 21st century will be known as the century where religious persons of color overcame the neo-colonial attributes of White atheists and their faux-Christian brethren.
PremierSportingKC Ah yes, because Christians have never done anything wrong, right? They totally weren't responsible for millions of deaths in Europe, over the span of hundreds of years.
+PremierSportingKC "Atheism (the opiate of Western White males that killed 150 million people in the 20th century alone)" - I would love to see you argue that. And to compliment John Kielkopf, the good old lust for power also played a lot bigger role than Atheism itself.
+Josh Lewis: It varies a good amount between states, but plumbers appear to earn between $55000 and $95000 a year in general, so I'd say they compare pretty evenly really. 'Much much better' isn't really in the picture there.
Basically, the only way to bring back coal jobs at this point is to ask coal companies to voluntarily do away with automation in favor of human workers. And if you think that's a viable solution, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
Michael That's only a small, temporary fix. There needs to be a move to retrain coal workers in a new industry. We need huge investments in infrastructure repairs and upgrades and alternative energy. Once we stop pretending we're broke, we can get to work on that stuff.
Coal is just the beginning of automation. The trucking business will be next. You laugh now. They already have semi trucks doing trips with no driver. Retail is right behind it. We are headed for a true financial collapse. And we can only blame the 1 percent for that. They want it all and they don't care if humans work for them or not. They just wanna save money and screw the middle class.
@Michael: Funny that you mention a bridge for sale. NYC actually sold one of their bridges. www.nytimes.com/2006/01/14/nyregion/city-wants-to-part-with-bridge-that-links-bronx-and-manhattan.html On another note, everything will eventually move to automation, even in industries that are in slow decline.
+Tia Williams The problem is those regions have nothing else there. The only way those families can get by if the coal is taken away is being forced to move to somewhere else.
So basically coal miners are screwed either way, but the way they're being screwed now is both worse for them and for the rest of the country and the world. The problem is, as automation increases this is going to become a more general issue, if we can't solve it for coal miners then just think how bad it's going to be when cars/trucks/buses/trains start driving themselves.
Idealistic as I may be, I think technology brings with it possibilities and with those possibilities, jobs. Think about it. If 10 people harvested 100 carrots manually and 1000 carrots with technology, but we only need 100 carrots to survive and 1 person to harvest it now, should the rest of the 9 starve? Or should the government ensure that they find something else productive to do to sell to the one person who harvests carrots?
What people fail to realize that if you automate something you dont loose a job but the job is just switched with another one. Someone still has to make, upkeep, and work the machines that are created in place of people.
Wilhelma For some time yes, as some jobs are removed, others are added (though not necessarily proportionally). But not as automation approaches skilled labor. Eventual upkeep jobs will be automated as well. Teachers, researchers, mechanics, artists, etc. will all be replaced. May be 50 or 100 years from now, but they will all be replaced and no new jobs will become available.
Great episode, but particularly impressed with the movement work by the actor inside the Mr Nutterbutter costume. Even for a very short bit to end the show, there's clearly dedication and perfectionism from the whole production team.
Murray energy purchased some mines that included Loveridge in 2013. The judge’s ruling states that after the purchase, “CEO Bob Murray had an initial meeting for every shift where he informed the miners that he reviewed previous violations that ended up in court, and knew how much those violations cost the company and who served as witnesses.” Robert Murray should be in prison.
Bob Murray sued my parents for organizing a protest against Murray Energy's labor practices a few years ago. He sues anyone who challenges him and could give a SHIT about coal miners.
I am very sorry to hear about what happened to your parents. I hope Murray gets his ass kicked in court for their sake
yeah shutting down those businesses and making them lose their jobs is sure the way to show you care for those people.
So he's just like shit bag Donald Trump!
Laura Ciocia did he lose the case? I hope so, but it must have been difficult for him to lose if he had high paying lawyers working for his interests.
Even if the company went bankrupt because of a lawsuit, the mines it owned will survive if they are profitable. Someone will simply buy them from the present owners (or bankruptcy trustee). Duh.
I can only salute the whole LWT-Team and HBO for receiving that cease and desist letter and saying: "Oh, it is ON, Bob!"
Absolutely! Now here's some irony for you... The new Coal Museum in Eastern Kentucky will be completely powered by (wait for it) SOLAR ENERGY. You can't make this shit up.
From the first time he mentioned the cease and desist letter you know he will ignore it. It still is very satisfying to actually hear him say it.
I think I'm starting to realize why he doesn't get more; it only encourages him.
Bob Murray died this weekend, aged 80, a month after filing for black lung benefits with the Dept. of Labor. The irony!

R.i.p, but he kind of had it coming. Owning a coal company and all the dust and soot.

They also know it's going to be pirated to hell anyway, and it's not like Last Week Tonight is their biggest draw.
That, and they make ad revenue from UA-cam.
Tis Cayea Let's not go too far. The only reason it's on UA-cam is so you go and buy yourself an HBO subscription. This is a business, not charity.
It also serves as advertising for HBO
Dudefromspace567 you do realize that has fallen from 39 percent in just two years. Coal is on the way out. It had its time and now it's over. It is smart to look forward, not backward.
As a result of this video, apparently, "Murray Energy said it received "numerous harassing telephone calls," including from callers who simply said: "Eat Sh*t, Bob.""
Bravo, John! XD
Yeah, Mr Murray just guaranteed that more people will be watching this clip. Maybe that's why after just 4 days, it already has 5 MILLION 200K views and 120K likes. What a dumby.

The character assassination John Oliver did to Bob in the follow up was worthy of a fap session. It was epic!!
@@davidb1412 I mean, tbf, Bob did the character assassination of himself
@@ProfAzimov agreed. 😂
"Hey Bob, was this as bad as you feared?" Absolute genius.
Paula Choi i totally agree. giving a solution is what helps viewers not just consume content, but take action

THE ENDING WAS FIRE. He knew he was getting sued and still decided that scheme, omfg. The man is a legend.
Um, I think it was HBO that agreed to his idea. Though still, it's pretty amazing that John Oliver was able to convince HBO to take the risk of being sued.
they got sued.... but this week, Last Week Tonight/HBO won! ua-cam.com/video/Zud4_Ohrye4/v-deo.html

You think that's legendary, I recommend looking up the interactions between an internet personality Jim Sterling and a little company called Digital Homicide. Its well worth the look, and some how even more crazy.
samualwatkins You should! I was there!
But seriously, Jim Sterling vs. Digital Homicide was a laugh. You should check it out.
I'm also from Wva and I support the coal mines. , sure the ceos don't give a shit about their workers , but that goes for every industry in the world.
Darren MacQueen
right, but how?
Juliano Ciaramello technology, building/housing. um plumbing, I'm trying to think of jobs kinda like mining but not as dangerous. you might have more but you get the point.
Juliano Ciaramello other non coal communities manage to create non coal mining jobs..
The people young and old who are miners need to realize that's a dying business and try to push for programs to get clean energy jobs at that location
Instead of creating new industries to replace a dead one, Republican local governments still apparently believe they can turn back time.
"As we have been explicitly told to 'cease and desist' let us do *neither* of those things - and let's talk about Bob Murray!"
This is one of those empowering moments that earn this show Emmys on a conveyor belt. Lending a voice to the voiceless and standing up to baseless intimidations of overly rich and powerful companies.

On top of this, Oliver and his writers are also protected by the first ammendment, both on the individual personal level and as members of the "press"(use quotes because this is a comedy show first and a news show second.). Any Judge who doesn't deserve to get removed from the bench will throw such a case out. Lol Bob Murray is now suing John. As a wise anthropomorphic squirrel once said: "eat shit Bob!"
AAAAH THE ORIGINAL BOB MURRY EPISODE. What a classic piece of american literature. Truly better than shakespeare
He's Evil.
“Update”
Bob is no longer the CEO of Murray energy, the banks own the company now due to Murray’s bankruptcy. He went bankrupt after his business partner died in a helicopter crash and Murray assumed all his debt. The company is currently being run by Rob Moore (another pos but not as bad as Murray) and his son Ryan who couldn’t find his ass with both hands) one might say that the chickens have come home to roost.
“Update again”
He’s dead.
And yet some people, even with what you've said, stipl think this kind of people are to be admired.
Who did your dad vote for in the election?
Harley Carter why the fuck does that matter?
I'm from a rural area in southwestern Pennsylvania (on the border of West Virginia) and there is a massive disconnect from reality in this area regaurding coal. People think that a huge part of the economy is reliant on it and that Obama was single-handedly destroying it through regulations. People think that a huge number of jobs come from coal mining, and many voted for Trump for that reason. I believe more needs to be done to get the word out that coal jobs can't be brought back or even saved for long, and more needs to be done to create jobs for laid off miners.
Bring back ships running on coal, and cars
Maybe sone smaller.towns we're completely dependent on coal mining.
Especially if the town was just built so the miners live closer to a mine
UPDATE: Murray Energy today (10/29/2019) filed for bankruptcy, and Robert Murray stepped down as chief executive officer.
Yeah but he's gonna be right back when the company's re-organized, he's not gone by any means
is this true?
@@MF-Productions Yep, and while he gets to keep all his money, $1.9 billion worth of retirement benefits for those coal miners and $152.5 million of obligations for workers’ compensation and health benefits will all be wiped away.

I appreciate this comment.
Nathaniel Crichton well said
If it's not dead it's certainly breathing its last few sooty breaths - heavy automation and no demand... you can puff things up for a while artificially (which could be useful if it was a stopgap measure to help _workers_ make the transition to a new industry), but you can't bring it back.

These things tend to take time unless there's a quick dismissal, so I expect we'll have to wait. But before watching the episode, I saw a discussion of developments in the case at Lowering the Bar, focusing on the ACLU's amicus curiae brief supporting HBO's opposition to Bob's temporary restraining order request.
loweringthebar.net/2017/08/you-cant-sue-people-bob.html
The linked article provides Kevin Underhill's commentary, including:
`To be honest, any brief that includes a heading like, “Anyone Can Legally Say ‘Eat Shit, Bob!'” is going to get a good review from me. Doesn’t really matter what else it says. But it’s a great brief overall.'
Additionally, the full text of both HBO's (less funny) brief and the ACLU's are available there. Not everyone's into legal humour, of course, and by now there may be more recent coverage of the case, but I still find this one well worth a look, though anyone who's seen the episode will know a fair bit of the context provided there. Finally, quoting the commentary quoting the ACLU, just because this is pretty amusing for a brief:
`“And with regard to the Dr. Evil remark,” the brief notes at page seven, “it should be remembered that truth is an absolute defense to a claim of defamation.”'
"Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel,

Props to HBO for backing up Oliver. When I'm not broke, I'll definitely get a subscription.

NYC actually sold one of their bridges. www.nytimes.com/2006/01/14/nyregion/city-wants-to-part-with-bridge-that-links-bronx-and-manhattan.html
On another note, everything will eventually move to automation, even in industries that are in slow decline.
+Tia Williams
The problem is those regions have nothing else there. The only way those families can get by if the coal is taken away is being forced to move to somewhere else.
Michael why? So I can get over it? Lol.
I am officially addicted to this show. Your rants are hysterical!
His English accent adds to it the hysterical.
DaaaahWhoosh white collar professionals too.
Wilhelma
For some time yes, as some jobs are removed, others are added (though not necessarily proportionally). But not as automation approaches skilled labor. Eventual upkeep jobs will be automated as well. Teachers, researchers, mechanics, artists, etc. will all be replaced. May be 50 or 100 years from now, but they will all be replaced and no new jobs will become available.
So...Humans need not apply?
Great episode, but particularly impressed with the movement work by the actor inside the Mr Nutterbutter costume. Even for a very short bit to end the show, there's clearly dedication and perfectionism from the whole production team.
