    Great video, I have two Taylor conversion cylinders for my Pietta new model Armys, and I definitely want one of these for my 1860 Army. Thank you for a great video.

    Just finished up 2 Pietta 1851 conversions with Kirst cylinders in .38 long Colt and plan on another. Other than cutting the ports, both were drop in fits. In the past I’ve done several Navies, 2 Armies, 3rd Model Dragoon and a Walker. I’ve never had an issue with Kirst conversions on either Pietta or Uberti guns. I’ve used Howell conversions on two guns with no issues, but will add that older guns ( I had a Uberti 1860 from 1969) will always have fit issues.

    Pietta ( and Uberti ) started forging the frames back in 2007..before that they were investment cast. That explain the difference in frames if you have a model made before 2007

    Cool video, the loading gate ring on my newer 1860 Rattles, it doesn't touch the frame on both sides at the same time. The cylinder to forcing cone has a pretty good gap too.
    The original cylinder fit is much tighter. I haven't used it yet and think I want to send it back to Kirst. I don't think the cylinder is as long as the original. Not impressed on this one for sure.
    I have the .45 colt.

    • @buckoff4162

      @@drivesideways6550 Pietta denies that they made changes to their frame. Kirst is lost to old age and poor help…..
      To eliminate that wobble I drill and peg the flat part of the ring to allow it to touch the frame. I’d just have to see the revolver to determine the fix first the cylinder end gap.

      32-20 would be awesome. There's an article on someone who purchased an original rem 1858 that was converted by an unknown gunsmith to fire 32-20

    I see the cylinder in this video has the notches and leads that look like a normal colt. I have 2 of the 45 colt kirst conversion cylinders that the leads are cut on both sides of the notch. Never could figure out why he did that.

    • @SayMyNameOutLoud
      @SayMyNameOutLoud Рік тому

      Walt Kirst explained that to me as his “fix”…..
      He pushed the dimensions to increase safety and then the 45 caliber cylinders (but not these 38 cylinders) would not “drop in” and work as the bolts were too high. This “fix” was supposedly to allow them to drop in but they don’t. I tried to get him to make changes as they don’t look correct but he didn’t care.

      @@SayMyNameOutLoud that sucks I am considering tight welding the lead that is not needed and then cleaning up the notches. Both of my 45 colt converters work but ot just looks terrible.

    Any advice for if after doing the conversion and you cock the gun it is literally a hair shy of being fully cocked. Which if you pull the trigger on a live round can be problematic. That said, if you really rock the hammer back when you cock it, it goes all the way and you are fine. I have seen other people mention the same issue and I believe Kurst came out with something to fix the issue. But I need to make sure before I say definite. IDK, anyone else have that issue or advice on how to fix it without buying product after product from Kurst ?

    • @buckoff4162
      @buckoff4162  2 роки тому

      I’m guessing you are talking about a 5 shot 45 cylinder. If you do the math your stock cylinder has 6 holes in 360 degrees which makes them 60 degrees apart. The 5 shot would be 72 degrees apart. That means you have to move the cylinder 20% farther with the hand when you cock the gun. Typically the hammer will not come that far back so we always “stretched” the hand to make it longer. The Kirst 2 stage hand is an easy fix for this and the latest Pietta revolvers have MIM hands that break when you try and stretch them so the 2 stage hand is the only real fix short of welding and reshaping.

    Does this make it a registerable firearm I know black powder is not.

    • @SayMyNameOutLoud
      @SayMyNameOutLoud Рік тому

      Registerable? I guess the ATF would like them all to be but currently, by Federal law only Class 1 and Class 3 have to be registered before you can own them.

    • @brettduffy1992
      @brettduffy1992 Рік тому

      @@SayMyNameOutLoud I am talking about state law and prohibited person can only have a single shot muzzle loader and not the revolver because it's easily converted.

    • @SayMyNameOutLoud
      @SayMyNameOutLoud Рік тому +1

      There are 50 states, all with varying interpretations of Federal law. I’m sorry but it’s odd that you would think anyone on the internet would know where you live or that anyone in another state would know your state’s laws. This just isn’t the place for that but your state’s DOJ will probably just interpret for their own purposes so your best bet would be a firearms attorney in your home state. Federally it is legal.
