Austin is using an animated face which is a newer thing for roblox and I'd imagine either robloxs optimization or mem's graphic settings, are making it appear in a default static position
Oh hey I’m the guy who said they only get their current events from this podcast! Thanks for letting me know about the titanic, crazy to think they just didn’t turn the boat, are they stupid?
Interesting tidbit about the Spanish flu, it was only called that because Spain was the only major country being hit by it that didn't have wartime censorship laws in place, so even though by most accounts it likely started either on a farm in Kansas or among railroad laborers in Canada, it became known as the Spanish flu due to them readily reporting on the pandemic and the Allies and Central press being able to report on the pandemic in Spain but nowhere else.
These podcasts turning into two very genuine perspectives about navigating content creation and internet fame is so unique. People come out with this stuff later once everything’s said and done, but hearing Mem’s account in real time about how it feels, contrasted with Austin’s perspective from his position on UA-cam is so interesting. Never stop being you guys
I decided to get sober recently after many years of drinking most nights of the week and it’s been a pretty rough start to the year. But it’s great to have this podcast to look forward to each week to help calm me down. You guys talk about the strange topics and ideas that I’m always thinking about and it’s good to follow some people who are also moving through there twenties like me. P.S you guys need to play liars dice in red dead red redemption 1 online. Good podcast setting.
Can confirm; nothing more adorable than little Mem singing “Man! I feel like a woman”, with a sassy shoulder move. 🥰 but she won that competition on talent not just being cute! Too bad it was before we all carried video cameras in our pockets.
I had a dream last night that I had a job interview with Austin (no idea what the job was but he asked me great questions) and it went pretty well and then I was invited to live in a house with both Austin and Mem (the place was huge but I saw no sign of anyone's families, I guess it was some sort of gamer house?) and the whole experience was awesome. Then I woke up and thought about how this parasocial relationship had sunk its tentacles DEEP into my subconscious. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I'm going to listen to this episode of the podcast and hope that my subconscious doesn't try to make deeper parasocial connections!
mem your discussion about digital footprints is so real. when i was a teenager i would change up my internet persona every couple of years, deleting all my social media/blogs/emails etc and starting over w/ a new pseudonym/username so people wouldn't know who i was. there was something very safe about remaining anonymous or being able to just reset how people perceived me when i felt like it. now i'm an adult and i kind of can't do that anymore because i have a real job that requires me to have a linkedin page for some god awful reason
they way i have seen mem's roblox character so many times and i only now have i realized that tails is wearing a naruto headband. incredible. this is fashion people take notes
24:50 You guys didn't even notice that the dog decided to join you on the Titanic. Also, I always assumed Memoria was a stage name. It's a pretty cool name to have for real. I was curious and tried to search it and just found two different films and a game, so I think you're fairly safe in that regard.
I was reading some old Victorian stories yesterday, and saw "hydrophobia" used for rabies. Makes sense, but it's interesting that that's the symptom they went with.
never would I ever have guessed that's her real name, 100% sounds like a gamer tag. like if there was a guy creator named Strongathan you'd never in a million years think that was his actual given name
Mem your description of that feeling of not being able to go back to anonymity after a certain point really resonated with me for some reason, even though I'm not a youtuber, I get the feeling!!
My Zero Escape brainrot is at an all-time high, because the thumbnail made me think that someone remade the Nonary Games in Roblox and it was like I became activated like a sleeper agent lmao
I got the itch to sail in 2017. I bought a sailboat for $700. Problem was I live in Kansas which is notorious for being landlocked. I found a few local lakes and got out and it turns out sailing is really hard and intense. I sold my boat for $800 and I call it a win.
It is really cool to listen to both of you talk about your stages of youtube famous. I like the idea of just hitting the pause button on the level of fame you are at and enjoying it. Wishing the best for both of you, hope your careers in this are exactly how you want them to be!
re: immersion, I went to a log cabin once and watched Casablanca on vhs with a 14" tv. It's my most memorable movie experience. You don't need 4k and dolby atmos to get lost in a story
On immersion, this is why I got semi-obsessed with playing and designing audiogames. With our current tech, reproducing spatialized audio gets closer to reality than anything can reach with graphics.
I completely agree about the seat leaning thing. I gave up on leaning my seat back, and I just commit to being in a state of mild to moderate discomfort. Sometimes I treat myself to a Xanax if it's a long flight.
Some of the stuff in the movie Titanic was real to life, like "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" Kathy Bates plays. Also, the stars were placed correctly with stellar drift in the re-release. I wouldn't have guessed Memoria was a real name. It sounds like a mentalist magician or a rapper. I remember when Any Austin was @NE_Austin.
I think text-based games have more potential for immersion, at least in world and story detail. I grew up playing MUDs and I have vivid memories of moments in those that feel more real than any graphical game I've played.
That's a good point. I grew up playing Infocom games (mostly Zork, but some others as well) and I can still instantly call to mind visual images of a lot of locations and events.
what the hell, I was looking at the Queen Mary II too Honestly seems like a really cool way to travel to Europe. I was planning out a fictional trip where I take the train from Seattle to NYC, then board the QM2, go to england for a week, then fly back
Halo would be a good game to do these in, I know you guys joked about doing it in a shootyman game but that could really work (star wars battlefront classic, too)
@40:00 Your point here, Austin, is exactly my reasoning why I do not see 3D movies. The immersion is all the same when I reflect back on it, and does not provide a world-changing perspective on the content I'm consuming.
I don’t know how to say this without sounding elitist but it’s so nice to listen to other very educated and funny people. Also this relationship is getting too parasocial so please tell us about how we don’t actually know you :)
Regarding pygmies: Their height is theoretically a result of vitamin D deficiency, resulting in poor calcium uptake, resulting in stunted bone growth. Vitamin D deficiency is caused by low light levels under the rain forest canopy.
I watched this episode as I work on a youtube video of my own. Although it would be nice to be able to make a living off of making shitty animations, I don't think I'll ever get very popular. But if I do I never want to be recognized in public. The idea of some random person walking up to me and being like "oh my gosh I love your videos" is a little terrifying. So it's always interesting to me when people use their real name and/or associate it with their real face as a content creator. You've both been getting a lot of attention recently so I liked hearing you talk a little bit about how it feels.
27:58 I think it’s more that with inadequate food you can’t grow as tall. You can have people who have the genetics to grow tall but if they are malnourished when they are growing then they will stay short.
I humbly request that on a future episode you guys talk about the idea of bringing back personal websites and "MySpace-like" social media where individualism is prioritized opposed to the corporate hegemony of the big 3 social media platforms. No particular reason to be honest, I just feel like you guys might have interesting opinions that could be fun to hear, even if it's absolute vitriol against it lmao
I hope mem fakes her death, but continues to pull in money from her memoria channel... Then she creates a new channel in alias, doesn't tell anybody about it and wears a mask and gets to make all the things she always wanted to make but wouldn't make money from. (Which to me is super extra weird att house memoria gaming and story telling or something.)
About real names, if you have it in your censor list, add more names to it. Bots can deduce it by checking which comments of theirs is getting shadow banned.
Your points about how past 1000 subs its hard to think of them as real people is the exact reason why I think mass civilization is doomed to failure. Not only in large civilizations does it make it statistically more likely that sociopaths rise to power, but the nature of large numbers creates sociopathic behavior in even caring, empathetic people.
@@terig5584 this is legit why certain campaigns for relief aid or policy change (I'm thinking of the African child feeding lady from the 90's, among other things) will refer to specific individual named people. People in general are easier to activate emotionally when they have to empathize with a person, rather than many people.
I'm watching two normal people turn into fame abstractions in real time
watching you two stand around talking about trivial matters while the titanic sinks makes me so nervous. that's very immersive
I like how on Austin's screen his character is smiling, but on Mem's screen it's got a completely neutral face
Even better as he talks about an old man he finds sexually attractive
: )

I don't understand Roblox - why is that happening?
Austin is using an animated face which is a newer thing for roblox and I'd imagine either robloxs optimization or mem's graphic settings, are making it appear in a default static position
@@TWlNKlPEDlAthanks, this makes perfect sense.

18:16 love how Austin says you'd have to kill him to get him to do karaoke right as his character drowns. Great timing

My delight when the flooding started. Genius location to hold a podcast.
That orphanage story is literally insane, I will never understand people who would want to go back and live in any other time than now fr

Podcasts and iceburgs never mix, when will people learn
Austin's real name is Theron Melton, he's from Milford Utah, and he was born in 1973! You can't hide from us Theron!
I was reading some old Victorian stories yesterday, and saw "hydrophobia" used for rabies. Makes sense, but it's interesting that that's the symptom they went with.
I fell asleep during this but I woke up and you were no longer on the titanic. So glad it made it safely to its destination

I would really love to hear how you two met. Given the small pieces of yourselves you have shared, I am so curious to learn
forgot that the titanic wasn't just the set piece from 999 (2009) for the nintendo ds it was real and it looked like this
hello to mem's mom's dog

austin does kinda have past life orphan vibes
On immersion, this is why I got semi-obsessed with playing and designing audiogames. With our current tech, reproducing spatialized audio gets closer to reality than anything can reach with graphics.
lowkey if the podcasts were longer (bc its entertaining asf) but just so the abrupt goodbye could be random and that much more fantastic
Also karaoke is so fun! Wish we had more of the Japanese style karaoke places in the US

I like how Austin brings up airplanes every single episode haha
Austin is such a freak for warm dog doo on a cold day and it is beautiful
