Animal Well, a game made by 1 GUY, has more players than a "triple A" live service game made by a team of 250 people, using an iconic IP, on a much bigger budget. And both games took 7 years to make.
That's because teams of 250 people have each person having to learn what exactly they are supposed to do and how it's supposed to fit, then take 4 weeks to type out code that could be done in an hour, and then it has to fit together with the other code that other people in the exact same situation have written. That's the creative cost of cost cutting. The irony is palpable.

I don't really like metroidvanias but I LOVED Animal Well. There are so many well executed ideas and large-scale puzzles it made me feel like a smarty pants.
It’s nuts how one opinion in a video can make people rabid and despise a person. I completely disagree with his take on the Arkham games, but that doesn’t mean his other videos aren’t good.
For me, one of my favorite games of all time. Not just because the game is amazing but also because of how it was made. As a graphic designer who is currently teaching myself how to make video games while also getting into music making, Billy is who I want to be. I'm not going to be coding my own engine lol, but art, music, design I got. This game is such a huge motivation and inspiration for me.
Honestly the moment I picked up this game I knew I was playing something special and I’m grateful to Dunkey for elevating this game so far above and beyond in reach than it would otherwise be for Billy.
Its so nice and polished. A breath of fresh air. Really hoping more Indy games pop off and show these game studios that gamers like creativity and well polished games over an IP name
no need for researched. Donkey put out a vid and it has a comedic section about who made the game and he makes it clear this was all done by 1 dude. Donkey doesnt even explain how he is involved, he wanted it to be Billy's game.
That’s the problem; you have to outsmart the enemies, use your brain to solve the puzzles, play a completely finished game on launch, and ENJOY playing it. Twitter haters can’t do that.
Quitting league is the greatest joy a human can receive. I quit and now I'm playing all the fun games from my backlog. My friends quit with me and we play co-op games now. Dying Light, Raft for now but will play more for sure. I also go outside more I play basketball I've gone from I've lost 12kg since I stopped caring about this shit game. I implore anyone that hasn't done so TO DO IT TODAY.
It's a little sad that dunkey seems to be getting more publicity from this than the developer, but I suppose that's the catch-22 when you sign such a big name to publish your game. Billy Basso has created something truly special, and I am looking forward to following his future exploits.
It does seem to be a mutually beneficial arrangement though. I’m sure lots of people heard of the game solely because of Dunkey’s promotion of it, and in his promotion he did explicitly say it is Billy’s game and not his.
I found tech that allows you to jump on the frisbee without needing to have it bounce off a wall first. Just have to jump and throw it at the perfect time and you just ride it
Dunkey is a popular UA-camr for sure but this game being front page on playstation and part of ps plus is absolutely mega and a huge achievement for Billy, Dunkey and big mode!
He's not reviewing though. Charlie is just talking about how great it is that a project from a UA-camr didn't end in a bad product or in disappointment.
Dunkey is genuinely such a good human being. He has amplified so many great creators. Funny enough the way I found about charlie was when he was in a dunkey video like 6-7 years ago.
Calling dunky a UA-camr is a bit of an understatement. I feel like he’s a legit freelance game critic and his taste shows this. Also dunky has never been a shill, he always relied on his content to grow his brand and has super high standards for the platform.
I like this format. I feel like the type of person who watches penguinz0 (the youtuber who does videos) and the type of person who watches moistcritical (the game streamer and reactor) are different audiences. I am a person who watches penguinz0, so I like the fact you didn't just play a stream clip and actually did a presentation. Obviously I know you have limited time so I put up with the stream clips (as I'm sure a lot of us do), but if you could present that'd be nice. Also it gives the moistcritical audience something new, and they don't have to watch the same thing twice.
From what I've seen as an outsider, game looks like a FEZ-like (which itself is a offspring of metroid-vanias), a game with laughably obscure secrets, some having zero feedback so you just have to do trial and error or look online. Golly! My *totally favorite* part about FEZ!! I might check it out -- not for 20+ bucks, though.
I’m sorry but absolutely do you think a game like this would be worth? Tons of hours of puzzles after the endgame that people are still playing after 20+ hours, a solo dev that worked on every single aspect of it for 7 years, even making is own custom engine, no bugs or launch issues. What about the game makes you think it’s NOT worth the price it’s at??

It's always great to see smaller projects get picked up and pushed into the publics' view! Also it shouldn't matter how much attention a project gets so long as it's not toxic.
I don't really like metroidvanias but I LOVED Animal Well. There are so many well executed ideas and large-scale puzzles it made me feel like a smarty pants.
It's crazy that it's only 34MB, too
"this youtuber" dude its Dunkey - this guy is a freakin legend. He has the world record in Bowsers Big Bean Burrito
I’ve heard it’s like halo 2 meets halo 3
It's unreal that Twitter still thinks Dunkey is some kind of evil mastermind that eats puppies alive
Probably because they see dunkey’s maturity as a threat
Feral fans of a game/series that Dunkey disliked (like Sonic Frontiers or Xenoblade) hate on him in return on Twitter.
It’s nuts how one opinion in a video can make people rabid and despise a person. I completely disagree with his take on the Arkham games, but that doesn’t mean his other videos aren’t good.
I mean the dude shits on every game, and then publishes this boring ass shit.
well well well

For me, one of my favorite games of all time. Not just because the game is amazing but also because of how it was made. As a graphic designer who is currently teaching myself how to make video games while also getting into music making, Billy is who I want to be. I'm not going to be coding my own engine lol, but art, music, design I got. This game is such a huge motivation and inspiration for me.
Just wait till he finds the place that requires bubble chaining
Thanks for sharing this with the class Charlie.
My farts are better than Charlie's farts.
It's projects like this, Amazing Digital Circus, ext, that really give me hope for indie content in general
It's like Halo 2 meets Halo 3.
Charlie casually making banger comics, songs, and videos
4:57 this gave me a good laugh, I've already spent like 20 hours doing the endgame rabbit puzzles
Yeah it's only short if you want it to be
exactly lmao this game is fairly big on the post credits content which imo is better then the main game
>Hes still on the first layer
Honestly the moment I picked up this game I knew I was playing something special and I’m grateful to Dunkey for elevating this game so far above and beyond in reach than it would otherwise be for Billy.
Its so nice and polished. A breath of fresh air. Really hoping more Indy games pop off and show these game studios that gamers like creativity and well polished games over an IP name
Does Smiling Friends have the stamp of approval for UA-camr products
Maybe, although i'd say Zach got his fame status from Newgrounds back in the day
@@paulagarciallorente Interestingly, Dunkey also was a creator as a kid on Newgrounds.
1:56 Thank God he did his research, it's not just Dunkeys game.
no need for researched. Donkey put out a vid and it has a comedic section about who made the game and he makes it clear this was all done by 1 dude. Donkey doesnt even explain how he is involved, he wanted it to be Billy's game.
It's not Dunkey's game at all. He didn't make it, he just helped publish it.
7:09 This Game Really Makes You *Feel* Like Youre Excited.
not even close,
baby.
Congrats! Also, check out Grounded for a good co-op game
Loved it, it’s like Halo 2 meets Halo 3
Big on ya Charlie boy!! Much love from where I’m at
“Miserable worm grinch energy” lol
It's a little sad that dunkey seems to be getting more publicity from this than the developer, but I suppose that's the catch-22 when you sign such a big name to publish your game. Billy Basso has created something truly special, and I am looking forward to following his future exploits.
It does seem to be a mutually beneficial arrangement though. I’m sure lots of people heard of the game solely because of Dunkey’s promotion of it, and in his promotion he did explicitly say it is Billy’s game and not his.
Charlie’s smile brings…uh…a day to me.
I found tech that allows you to jump on the frisbee without needing to have it bounce off a wall first. Just have to jump and throw it at the perfect time and you just ride it
Charlie saying hes had enough of metroidvanias when silksong is on the way and hes never played blasphemous 1 or 2 is insane.
It still surprises me how can a Halo 2 like game resemble so much Halo 3
Dunkey is a popular UA-camr for sure but this game being front page on playstation and part of ps plus is absolutely mega and a huge achievement for Billy, Dunkey and big mode!
I wasn't going to pick this game up originally, but when I heard that it was going to be a mix of Halo 2 and Halo 3, that all changed
Theres always outliers when it comes to youtuber content, mumkey jones and his book the trifler comes to mind.
I didn't know who the developer was until i finished the game, i still liked it.
This game is being “reviewed” like an ad read, so weird
He's not reviewing though. Charlie is just talking about how great it is that a project from a UA-camr didn't end in a bad product or in disappointment.
6:08 scared the bejabbers out of me; I thought someone knocked on my door.
Dunkey is genuinely such a good human being. He has amplified so many great creators. Funny enough the way I found about charlie was when he was in a dunkey video like 6-7 years ago.
If it isn’t Charlito
bath salts tier list!
Calling dunky a UA-camr is a bit of an understatement. I feel like he’s a legit freelance game critic and his taste shows this. Also dunky has never been a shill, he always relied on his content to grow his brand and has super high standards for the platform.
Charlie is so humble he didn't even bring up the fact he helps front an amazing music group. The gentle men are fantastic music.
I've heard it's like Halo 2 meets Halo 3

I like this format. I feel like the type of person who watches penguinz0 (the youtuber who does videos) and the type of person who watches moistcritical (the game streamer and reactor) are different audiences. I am a person who watches penguinz0, so I like the fact you didn't just play a stream clip and actually did a presentation. Obviously I know you have limited time so I put up with the stream clips (as I'm sure a lot of us do), but if you could present that'd be nice. Also it gives the moistcritical audience something new, and they don't have to watch the same thing twice.
Go Bigmode!
what
Can’t believe they remastered the game before it was released, insanely smart of them to do so!
I’ll be checking it out… only AAA game I play is r6 with my friends other than that small passionate studio games
I can’t believe one man made this entire game. Billy is a fucking legend😭
I mean it's dunkey, quality.
My farts are better than Charlie's farts.
i wouldnt say his videos are quality anymore, but whatever you are into
From what I've seen as an outsider, game looks like a FEZ-like (which itself is a offspring of metroid-vanias), a game with laughably obscure secrets, some having zero feedback so you just have to do trial and error or look online.
@@Fade_ToBlackyeah thats subjective bro
@@TheDiegoArmando I never said it wasn’t, I’m specifically asking for his reasoning *because* it is subjective.
What I presented are facts, his reasoning is subjective.
@@Fade_ToBlack you came out as quite aggressive, in my opinion

Matter of fact, I wasn’t even talking to you, why am I supposed to care that *you* found it aggressive, *you* chose to insert yourself here.
Not my genre either. Played it for my stream and the puzzles were fantastic. I loved this game.
You and Dunk need to collab more dude. The streamer only server thing where you built the maze and the DnD mission streams are some of the best content on YT. Yall are hilarious together
