Dutchik it feels easier because the holidays are so busy the new year signifies a fresh start. The best advice I have is to forgive yourself for failing and start new today. If you had a resolution and you stopped trying mid year forgive yourself for taking a break and just pick it back up. The only person judging you is yourself
I also thing entire year goals, or 'from now on' goals are doomed because of their scale. I like doing monthly projects that work towards something. A month is long enough to start feeling the effects of most changes and get past the worst of the teething pains, but allows for an end date. At the end of a month, some things I choose to keep on with, some things I modify to be more practical for my life and some things didn't work out the way I thought they might and get left behind, but overall it is a much more achievable timescale to work with.
Ok, then my goal is to stop saying my goals out loud. Damn it... EDIT: WOW, I REALLY DIDN'T EXPECT THIS MANY LIKES! HOLY CRAP!!! And this probably seems ridiculous but, it's my birthday too! This was an amazing gift, thank you sooo much!
I've learned that I accomplish the most when I don't set any goals. I got out of bed this morning? Way to go! I didn't kill anyone today? Gold star for me!
But I think if you tell people, you're also making that pressure on yourself to actually go through with it rather than being like 'Im probably gonna do this' to yourself. This can backfire with pressuring yourself too much so you don't feel like a failure. I don't know but the resolutions I've achieved in the past came from me knowing it was something I'd be motivated to do, and start putting steps in place from the getgo to get it done. Things that were more vague or I knew would be too difficult to actually achieve didn't get done.

Everytime knows people don't actually do their resolutions so that doesn't apply
Personally if I tell someone I'm going to do something, not doing it embarrasses the fuck out of me. So if I'm not sure I'll do it, thats when I say nothing. This research confirms the trend of the majority, it is not the same for each person though. I know myself.
THANK YOU! I spent a few years making vocal New Years' Resolutions - and without fail I found that, every single time, I only succeeded in achieving the OPPOSITE of my goal! So I stopped doing it, and now I find I'm much better at achieving the things I'd been wanting to anyway, on the down-low, simply by NOT turning into my Mission For The Year.
I respectfully disagree, i was a skinny dude and 2 month ago i decided to bulk up and told everyone imma do it, i gained 10 kilos of mostly muscle so far, and a big motivation for me was that i didn't want anyone to think i make empty promises, i wanted to impress them a lil bit, i think it'd ve been easier to give up if hadn't told anyone.
Yah i agree. He says its backed with science but then again everyone has the potential to respond differently to the outside motivation. I dont say my resolutions out loud because i havent accomplished anything yet. I also have friends who have to say it out loud or they wouldnt get the drive to do anything. But then again it only works for them for about two weeks...
Nah, the pressure of not being truthful to your word is bigger than that "bad side" to me. It works for me to have told someone else that I'd do something.
I think the opposite is true. No one congratulated me on my goals, they’re like “suuure, right” and then it becomes a huge motivation to prove them wrong. If I kept it to myself I wouldn’t have that motivation to achieve the goal and I could as well quit without any consequences.
This has me conflicted! It's really interesting & I've never heard of the 'Intention behaviour gap' before. I'm so used to being told to set goals & tell as many people as possible (presumably so they'll hold you accountable) but this way makes more sense to me personally. Thanks for sharing - especially at this time of year!
I think this is somewhat true but also the real problem behind resolutions is that people don't set realistic goals or thoughtfully outline the steps towards reaching those goals. They set themselves up for failure pretty much.
I decided that I wasnt going to tell anyone about my new year goal of learning the guitar and now I'm super excited to learn it and then surprise everyone in a year when I just bust out playing lol
I thought saying it to others makes you more likely to do it as it's not just you that knows that you want to achieve x and as a result you feel a little more pressured into following through
@@aquamarinedream8304 I think is really bad if that works for you. Imo is pretty bad if you get to a point where you care so much about what others think about you that you get to continue something ( even if it s good or bad).
@@aquamarinedream8304 Ok, sorry but I didn t think about the fact that you are getting motivated by the ones that are close to you and not by every "friend" (not a real friend)
I don't make new year's resolution anymore, one day I heard superwoman saying something that changed my opinion drastically 😱 and I totally agreed with her.
I've actually read a report about the exact opposite (just not about resolutions but goals in general): If you tell people about your goal, it becomes more real and the more people who know about your intentions, the more you are inclined to follow through. 🤷
Except if you are using it (telling your resolutions to one or two people) as a way to ensure that you stick to those resolutions (because you wouldnt want to let your friends down, or embarrass yourself) It all depends on the intent.
I've got a few more tips... One is to turn your goals into actionable plans, turning it from "I will read more books this year" to, "I will read 10 pages of a book per day", from "I will lose weight this year" to "I will go to the gym 1 hour every morning". Another tip is to seek accountability, basically just tell one of your friends/family members about your goal/s and pay a price to them whenever you fail to achieve your goal. If you plan to read 10 pages of a book per day, then you should pay $5 to your friend whenever you fail to read 10 pages. Make sure to practice self-discipline and never rely solely on your motivation. Have a great year, remember, you can create new goals and act on them any time of the year, just do it!
Strange, I always feel like I have to follow through if I tell people. Then again my social circle tends to be pretty doubtful so its less of a reward and more of a well now I have to prove you wrong haha. One year I said I wanted to lose 30 pounds and then did it to spite my mom was who was like "sure you will"
Ok literally for the last few months I've been trying to get in better shape, so I started doing just basic, small workouts at home, and then one of my friends brought up that she wanted to start working out together, so I told her that I had been for the last few weeks. I stopped almost right after that, and I'm only just getting back into it.
I noticed a little while ago that I sometimes do this, and its the same type of thing, but I try not to tell somebody I am going to do something until I actually do it
I would have to disagree. Saying out loud your resolution makes you ACCOUNTABLE for your words. Hence you keep up doing what you said at the first place. The dopamine of actually achieving something is far more than just getting congratulations for taking the resolution. So nah..
hmmm what if when you tell people your goal, people kinda give that "oh haha ya that's cool good luck with that..." response, would that make you more likely to achieve your goal since people don't believe that you can? (i have high standards for myself)
I have felt something get less indeed after i said some stuff but if you never say it you never practice it either.. so its a balancing matter i think.
That's not how it works for me, if i say it out loud i somehow feel obliged to accomplish it since it's now an official mission for me. if i keep it for myself i get lazy
Everyone talking about all these new great things there gonna work on, I’m just like I’ve been working on shit ya feel like why were you waiting in the first place?!?
Start any moment you want. Not with the start of the new year.
Yessssw
But at the same time don’t just think “I’ll start next week” every week.
The thing is, mine made sense to make a few days before new years which is just really convenient
