I don't want my phone functions on my watch. It's part of the reason, I have never had an AW. I been using varying iterations of Garmin and I turn off the notifications. I don't want to call, text or see notifications on my watch. I use purely for fitness and wellness. It's also why I like Whoop, even though that has issues of its own that I won't get into in this comment. I currently have a FR955 and I am considering upgrading to the Epix Gen 2 Pro.
I agree with you 100%, but i run a 5k to the gym twice a week and since my garmen has Spotify synced I don’t need to carry my phone on my run to the gym (which is an annoying hassle). I spend about 2 hours at the gym working out and then run back, that’s roughly 3-4 hours away from my loved ones. Incase of an emergency I need to be reached at the very least via text. I don’t need to have the capability to respond, but if I receive an SOS text from a loved one, I can drop what i’m doing and run back home to handle the situation. As it currently stands I won’t receive any texts on my garmin 265 unless it’s via bluetooth to my phone EVEN if I connect to the gym wifi with my Garmin.
Great cover, Garmin need to work to open up to their product for usability and connectivity to all services, and the GPS meseges, will make me realy switch to Garmin
I almost bought one today, until I found out about this. How is it possible for such an innovative, high quality smart watch, not have texting or email capabilities? Even the $50 smart watches on Amazon have text and email.
I'm stuck I want the gps but I feel no need to spend so much on a watch when i can't even text or anything on it, bought my daughter an apple watch and even she can text on it, if apple had a gps setting for the woods I'd buy one
@DaveDoesFitness without using the garmin app on android I can send texts? If so you have me sold on the fenix 8 solar, I'm like a kid in the candy store over that watch I'm saving my pennies just for it lol
I loved Garmin watces, but as an iPhone user, messaging exclusively trought the messaging Garmin app sucks!! Sadly it's a deal breaker. Being able to dictate text messages trought the microphone to anyone (even to people who don't have the Garmin app) IS A MUST !! and one day, being able to send text message from anywhere on the planet will be the cherry on the sundea!
@@DaveDoesFitness I don't think Garmin need to have access to iMesssage. Android users are sending text message to iPhone and don't need a dedicated app. The message appear in green beside in blue, but it's still received.
Thanks for watching the video Kristian. The Garmin messenger app allows someone with a Garmin watch to reply to an iPhone user (who is also using Garmin messenger). iMessage is closed to Garmin - or anyone else.
Unfortunately I'd be pretty confident to say the chance for integration with iMessage is 0%. I'd imagine there's a chance for integration with WhatsApp, Signal, etc, but Garmin engineers don't seem to focus on building those sorts of 3rd party integrations... Maybe one day! 💪🏃
Replying to texts works om android. The reason it doesn't work on iPhone is because Apple has locked that feature to only work on apple watch. Funny how so many blame Garmin while not realising that Apple is at fault.
I’ve been going down the Garmin rabbit hole. I’m sold on it. I’ll be getting the epix gen 2 soon. I just finished a run with my Apple Watch and I was thinking that all of the selling points that are pushed with the AW, I don’t really use them. Like cellular and messaging from the AW. So it should be an easy break up.
@@DaveDoesFitness I just went around looking for an actual display so I could actually see how it looks. I was going to go with the 51, but I think the 47 is a better fit.
Yeah I've got thin flimsy wrists so 47 works on me, but 51 would be laughably large. I've got some friends that are bigger guys and 51 works great and they love the extra battery (that friend has a Fenix 6x)
Dave, correct me if I'm wrong, did you mentionned that for text reply, both user (the sender and the recipient) need to have the Garmin Messaging app installed in their phone???
Apple can't restrict anything with this current implementation, it's the same as any other messaging app like FB Messenger, WhatsApp, etc But if you mean access to voice transcription etc they've already allowed access to Siri on Venu so there's hope! You're likely right though, Apple doesn't like sharing to make competition better 😕

This is a limitation imposed by Apple. Garmin are able to send text replies on Android phones

What about WhatsApp? Do you still can’t send pre written texts if you have iPhone?
So basically it doesn’t help iPhone users unless everyone they know downloads and uses the Garmin app for messages.
Unfortunately that's the case. Apple keeps iMesaage locked down so no 3rd party devices can access it
@@DaveDoesFitness I don't think Garmin need to have access to iMesssage. Android users are sending text message to iPhone and don't need a dedicated app. The message appear in green beside in blue, but it's still received.
What does this new app have to do with the iphone anyway? Its just Garmin to Garmin messaging

iPhone 14 and above can now send messages over satellite with iOS 18
does that mean I can send messages with my Garmin messenger app using my iPhone satellite signal?
Where did you read it? Could you send me the link?
Still trying to find out on how to even read a message on my 935. Any help would be awesome
it's only for emergency (SOS fonctions) not day to day messages
I was under the impression that this messenger was made for when you're off the grid with no cell service... what the
It does work that way when connected to an Inreach device which has a satellite connection
@@DaveDoesFitness Oh dang, that sucks. thanks

I cant register my number. Epix gen 2
I think the chances are small that they really gonna integrate with iMessage and apps like whatsapp

I’m leaving iOS soon because of this.

Yeah it works great when you are happy to only have Apple products, but once you start mixing in others the experience falls apart
That's what I'm rocking! Great all around watch and these days a great value too. I'm betting you'll love it 💪🏃

Both need to have it installed.
Yes as NickBEADG replied both users need to have it. Think of it like a WhatsApp or Signal messaging client.
Not available in fenix 5X 😢
Damn, they do a great job supporting older models, but I guess that was the cutoff for this feature. Tbh it's not that great anyway 😆
Apple Watch is a big competitor to the Garmin watches…meaning more restriction will be imposed by Apple

Apple watch is not even close to garmin as a fitness watch
Totally worthless, I might as well pull out my iPhone and be done with it.
Yeah, totally agree. I'm hoping this is a stepping stone to more integration that is actually worth using...
@@DaveDoesFitness great Video, I might add 🙏
