Yeah, bad nights and trauma aside, this made for a cool as heck episode. On the subject of Endeavor though, not much has changed for me unfortunately. Like, after everything he's done and how long it's been, it'll probably take a lifetime's worth of atonement before I start to look at him any differently.

This is one of my favorite episodes and I like to apply the quote "If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, it's yours." I'm not sure where I heard this quote, or if it's exactly word for word, but Endeavor's choice of leaving so his family can be happy hits so heavy. Self sacrifice.

I definitely don't see it as Endeavor letting his family go in a bad way, but more of giving them space to not force himself onto them if it clearly makes it uncomfortable given the circumstances. He can't force them to accept him. It's on their terms. Also considering his wife leaving the institution, it wouldn't be fair to force her in that situation to come back to that home either. At least gives the family an option for more time before they feel like they could properly face him.

I don't think it's impossible for them to mend things because even Natsuo seemed to show some level of genuine concern when Endeavor was fighting High-End, but at the same time, it's okay if they don't and Endeavor just has to keep his distance and accept that he destroyed his relationship with his family (or maybe just Natsuo). I can see it going either way.

Part of it was also that he knew his wife wasn't comfortable to see him yet so he felt like it was better for him to just let the kids go to her and stay away, hence why he was going to make a home just for them.

Honestly, buying that house was the best thing he did in terms of family. There’s not much else I can say but whatever. 😅

Honestly Enji and his family stuff has become my favourite aspect of MHA as it isn't just "abuser bad" which he was but the level of exploration into it has Enji honestly at my second favourite character spot in this series. First being Shoto....maybe there's a pattern here. But regardless I like how he isn't being forgiven and instead is needing to find compromises and ways to show he does care in his own ways, he's trying to fix things but understands he can't JUST fix it. He needs to let them choose too. So him letting them be away from him against his desperate desire to fix things manually is a really nice thing he does.

I like how Endeavour admits that none of them have to forgive him. He (sorta) made peace with that idea, but he cannot stop beating himself up over putting himself in this situation, so he chooses to punish himself. Also, in the manga it seems to explain more how his dynamic worked with his family, at least to me, and it seemed like it stemmed, at least partially, from his inability to fully comprehend human interaction thanks to his bullheaded-ness, considering how originally his intentions of separating Shoto from thehis siblings and mostly ignoring said siblings was mostly as a weird way to protect them (in his mind ate least). It's weird, but I can kinda see it.
AGAIN, Endeavour himself admits he does not deserve forgiveness, and i have a soft spot for this idea. You don't have to forgive the guy, but it's alot less tiring if you don't actively go after him with vitriolic hate and just distance yourself from him. Hate, regardless of how warranted may look, is not healthy for anyone if it's prolonged.

    • @natsuotodoroki
      @natsuotodoroki Рік тому +2

That’s a good point. Plus there are other ways to move on that don’t directly require forgiveness. It’s not necessarily about letting go of the hate, but letting go of going out of your way to hate. If that makes any sense. 😅

The thing about abuse in regards to this series is that it is made to be complex and not simple. It could have easily gone with "father bad" and end it there with Endeavor, but they didn't. There is still more to the story but that's down the line. I will however talk about things in regard to Endeavor that is interesting from this point and before.
Notice in the Sports Festival Arc (Which while he first appeared here he was noted before this, as of celebrity heroes from UA along with Best Jeanist when Midoriya first came to UA) Endeavor clearly showed signs of not caring if his own son liked him or not. In most abuse I've seen in media there is always been the thing of the abuser trying to get the abused to care about them no matter how much pain they have to suffer through. Endeavor though, Shoto makes it damn clear to his dad he hates him with a passion and all that's one Endeavor's mind is that Shoto just has to start using his flames. Kind of makes all Endeavor did to be self-destructive, think about it... say it all goes down the way he wanted. Shoto becomes #1 and is better than All Might, what then? Seems that as long as that happened Endeavor doesn't care what happens to him in the end, cause I could see it playing out with Shoto taking Endeavor to jail if that did come to pass.
Next point of interest is when Endeavor sees All Might's true form with the rest of the world. It's from that very moment he sees how pointless it all was. Because Endeavor saw All Might as how just about everyone else did, as an impossible wall no one hero can overcome. He felt so limited in what he could do that his only option was to train up his own child to do that deed. But to see how All Might is now Endeavor realized that it was possible. That he could have surpassed All Might without having to take the measures he did, that he never had to go down a path that hurt others and would have destroyed him.
Last point of interest is the flower Endeavor gave to his wife. A sign that he listened and cared about a topic she brought up. Implying that he likely wasn't as forceful for her to marry him as Shoto seemed to believe when he told Midoriya all this. That in the series it shows that Endeavor is complex to the point that people like his character because it is deep. That for all the bad he did, that he knows he did, that he struggles to go beyond and to be someone worthy to his family is something. Even if he feels that he can never be worthy of it.

Well.. the difficult thing for me, is that Natsu completely has every right to not forgive or want his father in his life. I think he might be a happier person if he can forgive, but he's an adult, and doesn't need to feel pressured to spend time with his father. Survivors of abuse, especially to the level Endeavor has put his family through, carry immense scars. Shoto as the youngest has only certain memories, as well as ones he tried to block out. In the festival he was questioning why he was remembering this now? For Natsu, having an older sibling die in a abusive home, while your abusive parent continues to be an idolized hero... That has to be very difficult. Shoto was separated from his siblings, and while he was abused, it was still different than his siblings experiences. Endeavor probably never had expectations of the sister, so she might have a different feeling towards him than the boys do.

The thing is, Fuyumi was born when Endeavor and Rei were still happy together and their family was good. Natuso never got to experience that, he was born literally to replace Toya and when he turns out he wouldn't, Endeavour discarded him. Plus he was the closest to Toya out of all the siblings.

I think part of the problem was that Endeavor didn't want to force them to interact with him, especially since he knows that his wife and Natsuo were not comfortable with seeing him at the time. So the only thing he could do was to walk away in a sense.

It can be very difficult for victims of abuse to see their abuser become a changed person because they can often feel like their feelings are being invalidated. Which is what we see here with Natsuo. It would be especially difficult for the Todoroki family as the world sees Endeavour as Japan’s #1 hero
The second house also isn’t to distance himself, but so that his wife doesn’t immediately see him in their old home after getting out of the psych ward. It wouldn’t be good for her sanity. This also allows the kids to visit and stay with the mom so that the she doesn’t feel like she’s being isolated from the family. He also knows that just buying them a new house won’t actually make up for his past actions, it simply allows them time and space to decide how they feel about him and his actions. Because he’s not going to stop trying to be there for them, but he will respect any boundaries they set

The funny thing is as soon as Dabi was brought into the show, and it was made very clear that he wanted to go after Shota as revenge against Endeavor.
I could tell one of them was going to have a redemption arc.
Either Dabi was going to realize that attacking Shota wasn’t going to hurt Endeavor in any way, and possibly reform.
Or Endeavor was going to be going through a redemption arc to try and become a better person or else Dabi trying to attack others to get revenge on him wasn’t going to do anything.
