Ive encounter a bear living in a spot like that on a vacant home. I boarded up area and returned 2 weeks later. My biggest fear was him returning while I was in the crawl space.
The worst crawl space that I have ever been in had hundreds of brown widow spiders everywhere. We bought like 10 cans of spider spray and some suits like you have in the video. I had to slowly clear out the areas where we were working so I could reinsulate the metal ducts. It felt like I was in a warzone. I accidently got too close to a black widow without realizing it was there and the mfer chased after me! I sprayed it with like half a can and the thing was still trying to get me even though it looked like a snowball 🤣.
Crawlspaces are never a fun place to be. At least you could "sit up" in that one. Most of the ones I've been under in my area, a belly crawl is all the room you have. Keep up the good work!
That’s what I was thinking if your not crawling in what you hope is some water but smells like crap and camel crickets attacking you non stop then I’m a happy camper!! And I would trade that all day for some of these tiny attics!! But love you videos man keep up the great work!!!
The worst crawl I’ve been in was half flooded, had some non venomous snakes, huge wolf spiders, a couple black widows, and was just muddy. You couldn’t go anywhere without sinking into the ground.
I'm doing one that's 20 inches tall with no floor liner. I'm on day 3 of insulating an entire home with r8.. never again. Wish I'd seen this video first, could've at least priced accordingly. Thanks for your video, keep up the good work 👏
I did an installation in a place with a crawlspace much worse than that. very uneven dirt floor. still spent at least 4 days in there, and 4 in the attic. Still my favorite job yet.
3M makes a good full face respirator. It’s a bit expensive but just one use in nasty crawl like this was worth the money for me. It also takes the same filters as the one you’re using in this video.
Thanks for the video. My crawl space is much smaller and has plumbing restricting movement. 50 plus year old house now needs new plumbing, foundation jacks and ductwork. In my younger years I would tackle it myself, now looking for options. I wish you worked in my area.
I was crawling around under a house today. Installing an exhaust fan to get the humidity down below 70%. Had to clean s as lol the brick vents and take the other two fans out. I was watching my humidity sensor and checking it with the controller for the fan, fell asleep for a bit. Something about a cool crawl space puts me in nap time
Love your videos as always and I ain't trying to knock this one but that is a clean crawlspace. I understand the suit to stay clean and the mask to keep dust out of the lungs but, that wasn't nasty...lol. I have been in some absolutely nasty crawlspaces and found stuff under houses I didn't want to. I may be the only one or one of the very few....but I love getting in crawlspaces. I feel like I'm exploring when I'm under one I ain't been in...lol. And the fact that rats, snakes and spiders don't bother me makes it easy. Great video as always brother!
I’ve been working in HVAC in the south east, aka the Dirty South for some 13 months now. I have seen some of the most filthy under house environments imaginable. How many people have actually said “No, that is too filthy of an environment for a human being to work in”? Just reject the insane. Especially if you need a hazmat crew to clean up the area. Sewage spill’s, broken plate glass, old bricks from an old disassembled chimney, 60 years of refuse, just strewn about. You would have to be short of self-respect to do this in a hyper nasty environment. Not enough money for most sane people.
this is so much better than my attic because at least here you can crawl. In my attic I could fall through anytime and it’s this tiny. God it’s horrible
I have a lot of admiration for people in the construction industry. Smart to be in any type of skills trade or construction work, my electrician makes more than an attorney.
I'm confused. On Instagram you had a new gig. Are you back running your own business or is this side gig stuff? Good to see more informational videos and less advertisements. We appreciate what you do teaching quality hvac. I still use your code on true tech. Ordered a Fieldpiece kit 2 months ago and just ordered a veto tech pac mc yesterday. 8% off isn't much but it definitely helps cut some cost.
Remember those stories the old guys at the local store would tell on summer evenings, you know, where they would make your worst day sound like a walk in the park? Well, I'm going to play the old guy here, because I am an old guy - 64 this year. Right now I'm working on a job that is under a double-wide mobile home, with wildly uneven ground littered with small rocks and concrete shards, where the old underbelly lining that held in the insulation is 50% torn out by raccoons and skunks. In some places, I have 16" of clearance, in others, 30" - tops. The amount of animal droppings, on the ground and up in the insulation, fills the air with dust, so like you I wear full body coveralls, but without the hood as I would be cooked alive with the 95F+ temps we've been having in Northern Cali until today. So I wear a quality respirator and goggles, which makes it hard to keep the headlight positioned snugly. The crawlspace is blocked off, with 2 access points, one at each end of the home. Steel girders/joists in the mobile home frame run parallel to most of the 1 x 8 wooden joists in the flooring, but the steel joists sometimes interfere and make it impossible to use tiger-claws to prop up the new insulation, so I have to fashion a custom retainer in those cases. Combine with that the larger diameter ducting that blocks my movement in and out of sections, and the pillars made of cinder blocks that hold up the mobile home, along with various 2" and 3" water piping, 5" sewer lines that run to the septic tank, and electrical wiring and old phone lines that hang around all over the place. The best I can do is about 6 hours a day down there, at which point I'm just tired. The tight internal openings mean that I can only half-fill plastic bags with the old insulation or else I won't be able to get them though those openings, or without tearing on the ground, and the farther I get into the crawlspace, the longer it takes to move supplies in and out of the place. On top of which, there is always in the back of one's mind the possibility of an entombing earthquake, one that is just strong enough to shake the steel chassis from the cinder block pillars. As for the Black Widow spiders that crawl about me (and the brown ones, too) I just shoo them along with almost casual indifference, because I have too much other sh** to deal with. (If Widows do come towards you, as another commenter discussed, flick them off with a stick, and kill them if they persist; no need to poison yourself with spray in confined spaces). We won't talk about the smell, the origin of which I finally located last Friday afternoon - a dead skunk! It's raining today and tomorrow, so I won't have the pleasure of removing that fella until Weds. I have yet to examine the various ducting to see what shape it is in, and the bigger stuff looks like it is 12" in diameter, but I need to measure that to be sure. There's lots of fun in that place yet, before I'm be done with it, or, it's done with me. I have to say that I was relieved to see that you, and others commenting here find these "workspaces" at times hard to deal with - I was beginning to think that I was simply getting lazy in my old age. And... perhaps I am. Thanks for posting the video, and thanks to everyone for the informative and helpful comments.
I know how that is. One time I was in a crawl space that was so close to the ground I actually was touching the ground with my back and the wood floor joice with my chest. I have never had a problem with being clostraphobic but that day I was absolutely freaking out.
I recently moved to South Carolina from Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania in 5 years I've only been in 2 crawlspaces one was my own. Been in south Carolina for 4 months. I've been in at least one a day. I hate it so much 😭 I miss basements
I've been under my crawlspace, so I knew exactly how he was feeling when he had to rest and talk about it. It should be against the law to build houses on crawlspace 's lol
Lol..that happened to me one winter. I figured it out during the spring that one of my ducts had detached from the heat pump and was blowing heat in my crawlspace all winter. I went in and fixed it, and thought that's one way to keep your pipes from freezing, lol.
My favorite part is "I've got a customer selling their house and the inspector says..." You did all you could given the circumstances, but what'll sometimes happens in these situations is that the inspector will tell the customer excatly what you told them, and all their customer will hear is "it's fixed"! Then it will be sold under the guise of "recently updated HVAC system!" 🙂
We had a troop get bit on a boob by a brown recluse while cleaning our her attic. She said the doctor had to debride about a tablespoon full of necrotic flesh. You can wear DEET repellent and treat some coveralls with Permethrin military style for those jobs with an arachnid audience. If you see rodent droppings mask up because hantavirus is also no joke. Be glad you don't do residential repair plumbing. One of the bravest men I'll ever see dived under my bros trailer then crawled through s fragrant lake of "logs" to reconnect his waste pipe. during a hot Carolina summer....
I was in a crawl space today. Fallen insulation, may as well not be any, abandoned Frankenstein plumbing, HVAC parts and lines and the unit it self, no lights, spiders webs of and water. Woohoo! But the worst crawl I’ve been in was a toss up between a one that a cat gained access to and used it for it for waste disposal for years and the other I followed a plumber who could not turn from back to belly. The clearance was about 14 “ in some places. I did not question his price! Lol.
Oh, yes my young brother I know of the crawl space and of temporary repairs that might just stay permanent. I live in a fifty-year-old house with a crawl space that in some areas has less space than in this video and maybe about the same level of grossness. I need to replace all the ducts but my cats have access so they cause me to do maintenance that I might otherwise not do. Thinking about tackling duct replacement as even though I have repaired the inner ducts the insulation is torn off and other ducts are compressed and bent. We will see what the future holds supposed to be a hot summer but at 74 who knows how long I may need cool air.
Nicely done. Hard work, but still pays off. Do you think that a disconnected line would be the issue where the heating is not getting to the top floors?
Worst part about work like that is that it is mostly needed simply because some half-wit did a half-assed installation when everything was new and clean. Failure to spend a few bucks on a hose clamp and/or properly supporting ducting tube = falling off and needing expensive rework later. Not to mention filth and rodents contaminating the insides of the tube that is essentially impossible to clean out, and all the lost energy costs until the year repairs are finally made.
Thanks for posting, this reminded me of my crawlspace. Except I have cylindrical metal ductwork that separated at three locations. Do you recommend using self-tapping screws to connect the sections, then taping?
Well done Zac, that reminded me of myself doing my yearly Brivis HPS gas central heating duct inspections, unfortunatly here in Australia the rats and mice love chewing through the pipe ducts,so the rodent bate stations are a must do thing here......
Oh my Lord if that was a nasty crawl space I'll send you some nasty crawl space your suit was still White some of these ones I go in for rentals I go home and sometimes have to change clothes but it is what it is nobody likes crawl spaces or working in an attic can't understand why they still do it haven't met anybody in this trade that enjoys doing that glad to see you're back hope you're doing well
How much do you charge for doing what you did? I'm doing a job now to replace a bunch of ducting and I have to crawl through nasty shit, how much should I charge?
Well the house maybe 30 or 40 years old. Flex won't last that long. Just hope you charged enough for the repairs in such nasty place! This seller probably lived with little air or heat for a long time. Place very neglected! Maybe he lost his job.
Can you tell me, is flex ducting old? Our house from 1962 has it and my HVA mentioned something about it being old, easily damaged, and not as good as stainless steel ducting. Seems like in a crawl space it makes sense because space is so tight...? Can you explain which type is the best (including diameter), why it's the best, and/or when you use the different types. I don't know how you did that....great job. I liked the music (perfect lol.)
Boy can I identify what you went through in that crawl space! My crawl space might be nastier; it has black widows. I put some rug runner down there, but at least that space you worked on has plastic on the ground. I want overalls, mask and forehead light like that. I need my heating duct replaced; the cats have just torn it apart. I have no money, so I'm going to try to replace it myself. I'll get quotes, but I think I'm going to get the heating duct; that's not too unreasonable.
Interesting video! I don’t envy your field. I have a similar crawl space. Had my DUCTWORK replaced in 2017. I think there may be some disconnected ducts, when I turn on my furnace gettin a lot if stale smells in the house, and at night my house smell like a bon fire! and I feel like i’m breathing in a campfire!! eye’s, and throat burning! I will need to call the people that installed the duct work I’m afraid there is a problem down below? What are your expert thoughts? Thank You!
Great video...thanks! I was surprised to see flex duct installed in a crawlspace! Is that code compliant? I thought crawlspaces had to be in hard duct? What state is this house in? Thanks again....very helpful video.
That's exactly why I left east texas spent 8 years installing in miserable attics with stupid humidity. Moved to denver. Such better pay for techs and all these basements are mostly nice.
I hear you we hate below houses old nasty peer and beam but as electrical contractor that’s where the wiring is some of the time you go where the money is
Good job bro!!! Altho that is just a quick fix. Those boots need 90’s. (Lol, that’s my least fave part too bro). Here (in Oklahoma) we don’t use tape EVER, because when you do, it leaves a residue behind when it comes off, because we all know it WILL come lose eventually. Then you have to clean, or struggle at the collar to get fresh flax on. We use only ties, or panduit straps.!
That was the cleanest crawl space I ever seen, lol.
GGGGRRRRR!
No doubt , there was even plastic down
No leaking pipes. I'ma get me a hazmat suit ☢️☣️⚠️
Yeah i been in some WAY WORSE
thank you for saying this
Everytime I do jobs like these I always find myself taking period brakes to just stop and rethink life
Literally my same thought
FACTSSSSSSS
“Why did I start doing HVAC?” Or “I should’ve stayed in school.”
Lmao
Ive encounter a bear living in a spot like that on a vacant home. I boarded up area and returned 2 weeks later. My biggest fear was him returning while I was in the crawl space.
Amen, I have been in some really dirty crawl spaces full of dirt, insulation fallen everywhere, and multiple water leaks. This job was clean
C'mon brother, I've only been in the field a few years but you KNOW that crawl space was a dream lol
The worst crawl space that I have ever been in had hundreds of brown widow spiders everywhere. We bought like 10 cans of spider spray and some suits like you have in the video. Hahaha ha oh man crazy
sorry but had to lmao
By far the funnest shit ever. Only those who know. Know.
You inhaled the same poison the spiders did... 🤦♂️
My biggest fear unlocked. Ive seen pictures of spider infestation in crawl spaces and im not sure id but a house within a crawl because of this
Going in craw today. I am 70 y/o female. I dread it
Crawlspaces are never a fun place to be. At least you could "sit up" in that one. Most of the ones I've been under in my area, a belly crawl is all the room you have. Keep up the good work!
Not hating but that crawl space looks like heaven to me. 🥸
That’s what I was thinking if your not crawling in what you hope is some water but smells like crap and camel crickets attacking you non stop then I’m a happy camper!! And I would trade that all day for some of these tiny attics!! But love you videos man keep up the great work!!!
Was thinking the same thing. Not making this a competition but I’ve been in a lot worse
Fr tho this crawl space ain’t shit lol
I've been in one to fix some ducts, but their shit pipe was leaking really bad, like I can see some freaking corn poop...
You call THAT a nasty crawl space?? You must only do commercial and high end customers lol
Ya looked like heaven under there. Even had plastic down 😆
Right! I do residential retros some the crawls I have to go in make this look clean.
Id have loved to do a changeout down there haha
Some days your the bug, some days your the windshield
My thoughts exactly. Not that bad of a crawl space.
The worst crawl I’ve been in was half flooded, had some non venomous snakes, huge wolf spiders, a couple black widows, and was just muddy. You couldn’t go anywhere without sinking into the ground.
Wow!
I hope they paid you well… 😂😂
Feel for you on that one.
How much they paid!?
That crawl space is actually pretty clean
Looks like you suited up to paint a car !!! Good to see you back.
Hey man how you doing? Good to see you here I’m a pretty avid fan of your channel and I love your videos
I'm doing one that's 20 inches tall with no floor liner. I'm on day 3 of insulating an entire home with r8.. never again. Wish I'd seen this video first, could've at least priced accordingly. Thanks for your video, keep up the good work 👏
That crawl looks like love compared to the ones we have in my area
the way he works is motivating
I did an installation in a place with a crawlspace much worse than that. very uneven dirt floor. still spent at least 4 days in there, and 4 in the attic. Still my favorite job yet.
I’m going to hvac school now and I appreciate this vid
Same
Good thing you've got your Hazmat uniform and safety masks and light; You're a real pro!

I was watching my humidity sensor and checking it with the controller for the fan, fell asleep for a bit. Something about a cool crawl space puts me in nap time
Man especially on a hot day
😄
I would be charging the customer atleast $500 to fix that duct work with the justifiable reasoning of difficult access. Lol. Your a trooper.
Wish I could love going into my crawlspace hahaha.
I definitely found a guy drinking used portapotty water....
I like your videos man. You do fabulous work for just one man 👍
That was a nice crawl space!
Great video showing what you repairmen or women have to do!
this is so much better than my attic because at least here you can crawl.

Steel girders/joists in the mobile home frame run parallel to most of the 1 x 8 wooden joists in the flooring, but the steel joists sometimes interfere and make it impossible to use tiger-claws to prop up the new insulation, so I have to fashion a custom retainer in those cases.
I have to say that I was relieved to see that you, and others commenting here find these "workspaces" at times hard to deal with - I was beginning to think that I was simply getting lazy in my old age. And... perhaps I am.
Thanks for posting the video, and thanks to everyone for the informative and helpful comments.

I use the same respirator and the same tyvek suit. I work for an insualtion contractor in michigan, and have seen some ghastly crawlspaces
I recently moved to South Carolina from Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania in 5 years I've only been in 2 crawlspaces one was my own.
Been in south Carolina for 4 months. I've been in at least one a day. I hate it so much 😭 I miss basements
I live in PA and start Monday 👍
Thanks for showing some of the actual raw stuff.
Only reattached what looked like two 5 or six in ducts in a heavenly crawl space and says “That was rough” 🤣🤣
Lol right?
I've been under my crawlspace, so I knew exactly how he was feeling when he had to rest and talk about it. It should be against the law to build houses on crawlspace 's lol
Thanks. Helpful video. crawl space really doesnt look too bad.
That’s a nice crawl space all wrap in plastic and some of the insulation is in place, but sometimes it does suck i feel you on that..
Sewer line backed up into house last week and went down in ductwork. Also water went through subfloor into crawl space
Wouldn’t do that job that’s hazardous
Lol..that happened to me one winter. I figured it out during the spring that one of my ducts had detached from the heat pump and was blowing heat in my crawlspace all winter. I went in and fixed it, and thought that's one way to keep your pipes from freezing, lol.
With all that ductwork laying on the ground you’d think the homeowner had wonder at some point why the HVAC system sucked so bad…
My favorite part is "I've got a customer selling their house and the inspector says..." during a hot Carolina summer....
Dude the backyard size on these homes is incredible
I’d rather be in that crawl space than up in a cramped attic anytime. Especially in the summer
OHH goodness!!! I thought for a minute there, you were getting ready to go into a convenient store in Chicago...
The Tim Burton music was perfect. No matter what you charged, it wasn't enough.
My guy Zac down there with an Hazard mask on 😂 Great vid bro
This crawl space is super clean compared to mine lol all kind of stuff under here 😂
Oh, yes my young brother I know of the crawl space and of temporary repairs that might just stay permanent. I was encouraged to see that I'm not alone in those jobs....at least there was plastic underneath....
Sometimes I would take a shop vac or Buckethead and have fun with the critters!

My god that crawl space looks beutiful
Thanks. Thats exactly what I need to do.
This does suck but somebody has to do it. 💪💪
I have seen worse crawspaces, but excellent job
How much do you charge for doing what you did? I'm doing a job now to replace a bunch of ducting and I have to crawl through nasty shit, how much should I charge?
Not just a nasty crawl space but nasty work
In Arizona is worst. The ductwork is in the attic with limited space and the insulation in your face pulse the 130° temperature
This crawl space is a 8/10 in my area. I’m jealous. 😂
Great job! I have to go under my mobil home and check it too. Take care 👍🏼💥👏🏼
That’s everyday for us here in Delaware 😂
The background music was perfect, the area looked like a horror movie.
Are you not a fan of using a panduit strap and gun?
I was gonna say just tape?? I’d rather use panduit straps
Panduit straps, and a hanger or two would have really helped it stay up. Plus the insulation needed to all the way up.
He told the customer they'll need all NEW ductwork. Dummies
We have a 1998 trailer, inspection failed the heat duct system. Wow, curious why the respirator? Toxic fumes from insulation under house?
Ill take a crawl space over an attic anyday. Love the vids
You can tell the original installer didn't want to be under there either by the (quality) job they did.
Well the house maybe 30 or 40 years old. Flex won't last that long. Just hope you charged enough for the repairs in such nasty place! This seller probably lived with little air or heat for a long time. Place very neglected! Maybe he lost his job.
Non of the houses are done right lol
Good background music choice
Can you tell me, is flex ducting old? Our house from 1962 has it and my HVA mentioned something about it being old, easily damaged, and not as good as stainless steel ducting. Seems like in a crawl space it makes sense because space is so tight...? Can you explain which type is the best (including diameter), why it's the best, and/or when you use the different types. I don't know how you did that....great job. I liked the music (perfect lol.)
Loose duct work is the least of the home owners problem....the crawl space needs a needs a bunch of new insulation....
Can’t believe you carried that camera around for that lol
Well the camera provides pictures so the customer can see the repair work and stop bitching when he sees the bill!
Fast work.👍
Boy can I identify what you went through in that crawl space!
You did great!!! How much would that cost, I have 2 ducks that are disconnected, thanks for the video
Thank You!
They probably didn't install it right. Have an inspector look at it, an air quality inspector.
Not gonna lie I've been in more crawlspaces than houses. Wait til you get a Copper head in a crawl.
Damn, not as bad as a pissed off racoon and her babies.
Duct strap would have been nicer since you do quality job .
Respect to you.
Great video...thanks! I was surprised to see flex duct installed in a crawlspace! Is that code compliant? I thought crawlspaces had to be in hard duct? What state is this house in? Thanks again....very helpful video.
The scary game song in the background 😢😂
That looks so much better than to be doing duct work repairs in an attic in Phoenix 🥵😭 Definitely a reason why I want out of residential work
That's exactly why I left east texas spent 8 years installing in miserable attics with stupid humidity. Moved to denver. Such better pay for techs and all these basements are mostly nice.
@@justingibson8788 Haa my wife wants to move to Colorado but being from AZ, I can't work too well in the cold temperatures
@@YuShudNoe it's really not that bad in dever we have over 300 days of sun. It's miserable
I WISH my crawl space was that roomy and clean. 🤣🤣
Should ZipTies it too , make sure wont fall off againt
That’s a beautiful crawl compared to what I’m use to lol
Thanks very helpful.
I hear you we hate below houses old nasty peer and beam but as electrical contractor that’s where the wiring is some of the time you go where the money is
I get to crawl in new construction crawls so it’s weird to see a clean, dry crawl space. I’m used to crawling around in four inches of water 🤢
Crawl spaces are not fun but if more of them were like that our job would be so glorious
We use only ties, or panduit straps.!
show how to obtain & brand names of what you use such as knee pads, headlamp, coveralls, mask, etc., and what approx cost is. Thanks.
My crawl space…rodent poop, spider webs, and gravel bed. Hard to belly crawl on all that.
