  • Finished this project for now, will add and make changes as needed, the setup is working better then expected, now i just have to try different fuels and test fuel economy!

I ran my 10hp Chinese Diesel engine hooked up to a Harbor Freight 10,000 watt Generator Head on 100% Waste Veggie oil that I collected from a Local Arby's. Ran like a charm for about 5 years. It was mounted on a small trailer.
Did blow a Head Gasket years later... Simple fix and the Cylinder looked like new !

    This is so cool!
I wonder if a larger pulley on the engine would use the low speed torque of the engine a little better and produce more total power? Might be interesting to try different size pulleys at some point.

Electronics engineer here. You could add a DC-DC buck, boost or a buck-boost module after the rectification to optimize the load for the generator, so you can find the optimal load/RPM range for the best fuel efficiency. I don't think solar MPPT chargers would work directly, as they would likely load the generator up more than the optimal load, as it would produce more power while getting too loaded up and lowering the overall efficiency.

Possible that the best efficiency is not at the same point than the max power. Although on a cheap gasoline generator I've found that the best efficiency was achieved at high power output: ua-cam.com/video/hLuFoImEaTY/v-deo.htmlsi=RN97blL4z-r8WNnH&t=473
Diesel generators are better to run at low RPM, so it's possible to get a better efficiency at lower power. Some measurements would be very interesting...

That makes since, I may try to at and see how good it works with charging different voltages of batteries, I’d be worried about the dirty input from the generator but it may not matter too much, thanks!

Ya the problem is the only thing avaliable in those wattage is a charge controller as long as you are making more voltage because they are only buck converters and the cost is kinda high

Rubber feet on the base, i think zip ties are fine, also for smoothing out the power a large capacitor could be helpful.

So electrically, you're pulling down 1 HP, on the mechanical side, if you could figure out the torque at the speed you're running, I think you're going to find you're pretty close to 2 Hp.
So either your motor/generator is saturating, or your belt is slipping enough that you aren't getting good power transfer. You could look at it with a scope and measure the output frequency on the AC side into one of your rectifiers to figure out your RPM and the wave shape would tell you if you're saturated or not.

I thought of such a system for my electric motor last year. 6 hp fossil fuel engine and 5 kW hub engine connected by chain. I think you should connect a 6 kW hub motor controller, then you can increase its regen level to the highest level and charge your battery directly. The bridge diodes you use, uncontrolled and unfiltered, cause a lot of energy loss. You must connect it to a regen-enabled controller.

based on the movement of the bridge rectifiers, id highly reccomend you bolt both of them to the heatsink with thermal compound, possibly to something of larger mass depending on heat they generate. hopefully before they overheat and fail.

Add a heavy flywheel to the engine it will greatly help smooth the power output from the engine then add a large automotive stereo capacitor after the rectifiers as that will smooth the power input going into the mppt charge controller making it last alot longer (they don't like dirty power inputs)

If you are still having belt slippage I do believe they make serpentine belts that short and tractor supply should have a serpentine pulley that will fit. I worked at O'Reilly's and sold a belt about the same length as what you are using but don't remember what car it came off of. If your local auto parts store has decent people working there they should help you find the belt you need if you are wanting to go that way.

Just joining you on your build and looks pretty neat, especially since a motorized portable generator is a few hundred dollars at least. I'm not sure if you plan on adding one but I was thinking that a cover ought to be over the assembly once it's finished so it'll be a little safer, and since it's air-cooled the shroud could be diamond mesh for air and exhaust to flow through.

    • @dodgeme1986truck

Not just a cover a cover with sound deadening material where there is a ducted fresh air inlet sealed to the cooling shroud inlet and the air blows through exiting over the rectifiers heatsink

The diesel engine is between 50-100%more efficient than it's gas counterpart honestly I'd use an anticogging 3phase ac (wind turbine style) generator head to start, run through a 3 phase bridge rectifier/regulator with dc output capacitor, a heavy flywheel added to the crankshaft would help smooth generator input rpm/output ripple waveforms as it minimizes the acceleration/deceleration created between the power stroke (accelerating) and 3 other (decelerating) cycle phases (exhaust, intake, and compression) under normal load without added flywheel it could be 200rpm loss between power strokes where the added flywheel could reduce it to a small amount like 50-100rpm (heavier the flywheel the less rpm change)

1 gallon of diesel generate approx. 37-40kwh

    • @foxtizzo
      @foxtizzo 7 місяців тому

@@dodgeme1986truckThank you for your answer. 1 gallon of diesel contains 38.26kwh heating energy, so that would be an efficiency of 100%. 0.106 gallons contains 4kwh heating energy, so if you get 1kwh electricity out of it, that would be an efficiency of about 25%. Not bad! I've measured the efficiency of a cheap AC generator (gasoline), and found a maximum efficiency of 13%. I think the generator head has a bad efficiency of about 65% and the engine about 20%. If you want to see the graph of efficiency vs power, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/hLuFoImEaTY/v-deo.htmlsi=RN97blL4z-r8WNnH&t=473

@@mattdaddy_888 yes if you hold it down until fully up to speed it'll pop over easier, the compression release usually pushes the exhaust valve open letting the air flow freely through the valve port holding it keeps the valve open continuously until released although they usually automatically release above a certain rpm anyway holding it open longer won't do any harm... However it is necessary on these small engines to use a fuel conditioner with lube additives (when using ultra low sulpher diesel fuel) as ulsdf is missing the sulpher lubrication these engines fuel systems were designed for. Also you need a zinc(zddp)/flat tappet cam engine oil additive for almost all small engines including these ones.
