I agree with all he says about the useless Tories, but I contest the claim he's "given up" politics.
If that were true, he wouldn't bother writing columns on it, wouldn't advocate the Norway Option for Brexit (for some reason), he wouldn't talk about all the things he always had, and his column would be composed of baffling movie and book reviews. Or maybe he'd just retire from the MoS.

Peter actually got involved with politics by running for a seat I believe. So when he says he's given up on politics he just means he's given up direct involvement. Clearly he'll never give up sharing his views and lucky we are for that.

krileayn Actually he did that just to annoy Michael Hesseltine.
He has never had any serious Parliamentary ambitions

      Oh ok thanks for clarification.

The reason is that he has been persuaded, as I have, by the arguments of Christopher Booker and Richard North, both long standing Brexiteers, that the Norway option, though not ideal is the only way to exit the EU without causing massive disruption and economic damage.

He has a living to make and has far too many insightful things to say about politics and its been his whole career and he makes a nice amount from it so to say he should give up is ridiculous.

Peter Hitchens is being a bit of an old buffer here, especially his remarks re: Brexit. However the vote came about - I agree with his 'mistake' analysis - the fact that it did happen is wonderful and a chance for Britain to bloom again. He should not be such a pessimist.

One great man who hasn't given up politics is JACOB REES-MOGG.

Is there anybody who isn't awful in British politics, though?

Certainly the Mogg is awful in the sense of 'inspiring reverential wonder or fear', but somehow I don't think that Mountain 999 or Epiphanius meant it that way. Perhaps they could give us just one fact about the Mogg that renders him 'awful' in the negative sense? He has many qualities that render him great, amongst which are honesty, integrity, wisdom, intelligence, rhetorical perspicuity, rhetorical power, and charisma. I take it he is also rather good-looking, though, as a man, I'm not in the best position to judge.

Got to admire Hitchens' way with words, even if he does just spout Tory drivel. Sadly his dream of a Victorian Britain has been dead for decades. Instead of resisting change he should accept and get on board with it.

      Alex Mackay HAHAHAHAHAHA!
You ignorant fool. If you actually listened, you'd have heard him say he hated the Tories and wanted to destroy them.
And if you knew him, you'd know he isn't a nostalgist and doesn't want to return to the past, but believes we chose the wrong future.
      And why should he?
If the Government abolished democracy or the Bill or Rights (which they've done already, but never mind) would you just "accept change," or would you want to preserve the old order?
But you are right on admiring his way with words.

Alex Mackay .......Why do you think we should accept change! What change should we accept, why do we have to accept that the British way of life must be given up for the sake of Multiculturalism. Being English, not British (England being part of the British Isles) and a nationalist I am called a Racist, why do I have to accept change, I don't go to another Country and tell the people they must change.....If people who come to England don't like our way of life they can always go somewhere where they fit in better.

Sæwelō no it doesn't. The Muslim population has increased from 2% to 4% of the total population in 30 years. They are a minority and always will be. Even with current immigration levels it won't reach 8% until 2035.
Fucking right wing morons and their panicking.

M not really. I follow a lot of Peter's work. He is simply a contrarian. The fact that he bangs on about how evil the European Union is and then didn't even vote for Brexit, and now complains that brexit will be a disaster tell you enough. It's probably a mixture of his oratorical skills and contrarianism gets his fanboys addicted to his drivel.
