  • Peter Hitchens is a British journalist, author and broadcaster who speaks from a singular perspective. He is perhaps the most astute observer of our contemporary condition there is and is prepared to call things just as he sees them.

    Peter's work is far more valuable than he realizes. His battle weariness is a result of him not taking proper account of: “Society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit.”

    • @gladifly
      @gladifly 4 роки тому +2

      Don't bother. Christianity has largely gotten us to this sad state of affairs - Christian doctrine is all about one's own 'self-preservation', which is just another word for 'individualism'. Paganism is the native religion of Europeans. And we still have Pagan traditions, they're just masked as 'Christian traditions', which is indictive of the subversive nature of Christianity.

    • @edwardcatt2399
      @edwardcatt2399 4 роки тому +6

      king of the celts, just what is wrong with "individualism"? Some would say the embrace of Marxism, initiated through the lens of "rich v. poor", since swapped with one of "oppressed v. oppressor", is what has led us here. Not Christianity but the abandonment of Christian principles in favor of Marxist-style warfare. It comes down to whether you believe in the Marxist POV that your nature / individualism is dictated by society or was gifted to you by God. Recent movements invested in the 19thC if not earlier attempting to alleviate privation and "equalize" people have been disastrous all throughout the last two centuries. It is the ABANDONMENT of the Christian precept of the sovereignty of the individual (and the responsibility that accompanies that value), that allowed counterproductive cultures to gain a foothold. Post-reformation Christianity was a boon to Western society and the abandonment of those principles in favor of grievance politics (i.e., selfishness), is what is responsible for the worsening state we're in. Individualism seems much more conducive to a functional society than collectivism.
      I'm agnostic, by the way.

      @brent smith Christianity emphasised individual rights and responsibilities in a Roman Empire where the human individual was no more than a machine. Rather like now. The Celts were head hunters who sought to appease the gods with human sacrifices. Seeing the pre-Christian world through heavy metal, comic books and neo-Pagan fashion cues is escapism, not metaphysics.

They pounced on Cameron's idiocy, he paid the price and they succeeded with GB which fortunately resulted in a huddling for the the other nations. GB is in crisis presently while doofus Boris pretends all is well. The curtain will fall when his reign ends if not before.
      GB has lacked smart politicians for decades allowing weak PMs to lead a listless ship. Only in such incoherent times could a carpetbagger like Boris fill the gap. Peter: Yes, but the people who are engaging in this in many cases don't particularly *want* reasoned, rational discussion. They just want to silence opposition to what they're doing.
    [Because what they're doing can't stand *up* to any reasoned, rational discussion.]

    Peter Hitchens is a great man, I truly hope he understands how much he has positively influenced my life, and many others. I know he has lost hope and I often lose hope when I look at the direction our European culture is heading in. I feel like the world is just becoming so depraved, shallow and narcissistic sometimes I actually start to hope for the end.
    But we must all maintain hope. We can affect people even if we don’t see it. For example Peter maintains that he’s made no difference and “may as well have gone to the beach” but he is one of the many, if not the biggest factors that forced me to reassess my position on faith. If it weren’t for him I may never have found my way back to the faith of my childhood, Christianity.
    As far as I’m concerned, if you can bring just one person back to the conservative, Christian worldview then your effort has not been in vain! Always remember, there are more of us out there than it appears. The trouble with our demographic is that we tend to be quiet, hard working, conscientious and somewhat timid- in comparison to our lgbt/antifa/left wing counterparts, but don’t lose sight of the fact that our numbers are growing by the day :)

It does sound as though he has 'given up' and I can understand why. The most animated I have seen him was the day after the EU Referendum when he seemed delighted at the Leave result. Enjoyed both parts 1+2. Peter does not give himself enough credit in reaching people. Just because the peoplein debates ignore him and refuse rebuttals. Does not mean the people in the audience or members of the supporting opposition were not affected by his reasoning. It takes along time for grass to grow up through a concrete walkway. He should know because he was a communist and later through life experience became a Catholic.Cheer up! Peter is an excellent commentator,writer and interview.

    What a difficult interview well done, as usual, by one of the most decent people on the face of the earth, namely the honorable John Anderson, who has no quit in him.
    I got the sense that Peter could not speak freely because he is in the UK, otherwise he could have covered Brexit and the dismal leadership before Boris came in. Peter needs to take satisfaction that his work has reached individuals, probably lots of them. His claimed inability to get the elites to pay attention (total lack of charisma...haughty?) to him and his consequent apparent bristling capitulation is not what we need right now. We need every voice, especially a learned one, to keep at it no matter what. I agree with Mr. Anderson...never, never, never give up. You might just end up being a spark of hope in the most unpredictable places and ways.
    As they say, chill, Peter, understand that Trump was elected because the alternative was unthinkable and keep up the good fight with a bit of humility mixed in for effect.
    And Farage is alright.

    John Anderson is a treasure, an interviewer who actually listens to his guests and lets them speak. Peter Hitchens is nearly always right, and, as he says, he is nearly always ignored by politicians who haven't done their homework and don't know how to reason. In many ways, Hitchens is a throw back to the Age of Reason, when men like Milton, Locke, Mandeville, Franklin, Bacon, Voltaire, et al. believed men and society were perfectable through reason. As we see today, the great mass of men are not reasonable; they aren't even well-educated and many are not capable of logic. In most nations of the world, passion guides action, not reason -- the worse for the world.

    I am another one who deeply appreciates what Peter Hitchens has to say and have huge admiration for him. I miss his appearances which are very scarce these days. And Peter, you can never give up! You have no idea how many more out there are paying attention! Changes are occurring, probably not as fast as you would like to see them but they are happening, the world keeps changing and so will we. If it all ends, it will start again... who knows when, but it will. What it is heartbreaking is having to go through dying knowing that it might take a long time to get another chance.

    I wish that Peter and John had been around when, with all the benefits of traditional neo-classical education in a former British colony, I began training as a History teacher in London in 1971. I went there with a view to being at the cutting edge of innovation in education. Thanks to Peter Hitchens I can, from the perspective of a retiree, finally understand with the benefit of his clear and incisive analysis, what has happened to history education since 1968 and why so many, young and old including professional colleagues, struggle to discuss events, past and current, in an objective and rational way.
