Before you comment: We wanted to clear up the air regarding a few points we made about the Thanos II Pro. For the sake of time we did not show ourselves balancing and calibrating the spring arm in the video. We watched many videos show us how and spent quite a few hours making sure it was calibrated before we began shooting. We also made a few adjustments to the vest to ensure a tight fit (Almost too tight, Mitch had to take it off a few times for a break😅). It is understandable that we only had 2 hours of experience using the product but we wanted to make a video showcasing the first look at what a rig like this is like. We are sure that with practice there is a lot you can do with this rig and have much better results than what we had. We stand by what we said and do not recommend this product to run and gun shooters. You will probably know yourself if this type of product will be beneficial for your filming style.

I think they should have sent this to an experienced steadicam operator for testing instead. Someone that can compare the performance of this against the arri trinity

I feel like a device like this deserves a bit of practice before giving an overall review on it. I think with a little more proficiency you'd find that you're able to get some cool shots you wouldn't be able to get without it. Oh and I don't think you're going to want a use a One Wheel for the running shot on a gravely hillside like you used in this video...so I'm not sure why you'd even make that comparison.
I enjoy your videos but I don't think this was a fair review.
100% agree with this. I'd love to see them put time onto the system or even try another vest system since it seems to be the major issue they're having.

I totally agree.... it wasn’t fair at all specially when you know much about it and the whole purpose for it.
You don't have that vest properly fitted on the user. It's far too loose and is clearly not fitted properly. The spring also isn't properly loaded for the gimbal, and the arm isn't properly balanced. If you properly balance and set up everything spring arm vests can easily get rid of almost all the issues you encountered. I can sprint with my Glidecam X-10 vest with a MOVI Pro and not see a single jitter in the shot. You should really take the time to learn gear before using it, and 2 hours is clearly not enough for you. I would definitely recommend anyone with a 3 axis gimbal to consider an arm and vest to remove Z axis vibrations. When properly calibrated and used, most if not all of these issues are resolved and can achieve much better results than what is seen here.
I agree with the above completely. This was not a good test of what is essentially a Glidecam/Steadicam replacement. I would also not call it an Arri Trinity replacement - that is a bit of a stretch for DigitalPhoto to market it that way, as it lacks the advanced active electronic stabilization that comes with Arri Trinity. I cringed when watching the running scenes as you were not holding the device correctly at all. A bit of time learning how a Glidecam is used would help you, and you might find this a very useful piece of equipment.
Just to clear a few things up, we did spend quite a few hours making sure it was set up correctly. We totally understand the 2 hours is not enough time to fully learn how to use a rig like this. One of the main issues we had was how the wait of the actual spring arm would cause the arm to bounce up and down causing a lot of vibrations from being moved anything faster that a light jog. Thank you for you comment and we really appreciate the feedback!
totally with you! it takes a lot of practice and balance to master such a vest/arm just like a steady-/glidecam itself.

As others have said, this would probably work perfectly if you had more experience with a steadicam/glidecam rig. Holding the sled ANYWHERE but near the balance point introduces your own body movements into the rig. Once it's perfectly balanced, the sled can almost be left alone to fly without operator control, especially with the gimbal attached. UA-cam is littered with videos of inexperienced operators grabbing the sled by the lower pole as they walk/run and then questioning why there is so much vibration in the footage. If you watch a professional operator work with even a non-electronic gimbal steadicam, you'll notice they have only the lightest touch on the sled, allowing the inertia of the rig to stabilize the camera.
Yes I agree. Like the Arri Trinity, it’s totally for pros who will take the time to study and learn the details of the stabilizer, because it really is a lot and if you half ass it, you’re gonna be upset because its not going to work properly. I’ve found that Junior Lucano’s video of balancing the arri trinity is extremely good because this thing is basically a trinity and he goes over minor yet extremely important details regarding the fine tuning of the balance that takes it from average to WOW. I just got my thanos pro 2 and yes there is a rather steep learning curve if you wanna get the most out of it.
You can't say it’s bad when you've only used it for one day. Steadicam operators take months to master their craft so I don't think this is a fair review.

This review doesn't so much show that the product is bad, but that the product has a learning curve that can't be ignored. I've been looking to get this one or the Tilta Float. This video is a reminder that we can't just expect to put it on and have everything magically be perfect. I sure wish it worked like that, but it doesn't.
I don't think I would use a single shot that was shown in this video. Thankfully, there are other reviews of it that show what it is really capable of in the right hands. To be fair to TMS, he flat out said he had no experience and didn't put much time into it. I think that's actually a perfectly reasonable approach, because a lot of us watch product videos and think we can just use the same equipment and get the same results with little effort. It's WAY more complicated than that.

Love you guys but this review was not fair at all. Comparing a 52 thousand dollars Arri to a Thanos its just not fair at all. And the one wheel Comparison....how can you ride the one wheel on a rockie hill?

Love the passion, guys! Wish I had that much drive. But I think that it's supposed to be completely balanced so that it stays in whatever position you leave it in, not bottom heavy like a traditional steadicam. Might be a little easier to manage without having to hold your hand on the connector arm thingy.

Yes it does, I just wrapped a feature set with my OG Thanos Pro setup with some added Trinity modifications being the star of the set.
Spring arm/vest stabilizers need way more than a day’s worth of a learning curve. There is a reason why there are in-person courses to be a Steadicam operator.
@@ReelCinnemonProducts thats what i said, the things need practice an a lot of time to even start using and they are worth for some shots but if you learn to use it well you could get hollywood like shots for much cheaper. Imitating a dolly, crane and maybe drone all in one shot, possible with this stabilizers
@@sanlega Exactly! In my opinion it’s a fair review of a first time user’s inaugural day on set with it and no prior experience. However, saying a Onewheel is the better option for these shots is terrible! Each tool has its place.

Looking at his posture and how he's fighting the arm to push the camera down, rather than simply rotating the boom downward and keeping his core straight, I would wager that he is not using the device correctly and should practice his stance before coming to any definitive conclusions.
When I look at the footage, it seems to me like he's not really drawing the full benefit from the Thanos and just using it as a stick to put his gimbal on. It's not a staff, mate. Let the stabilizer work for you.
Hopefully, it doesn't snap.
The Thanos-Pro snapping would wipe out half the population.

I think the biggest thing that doesn't make this piece of equipment perform like a trinity would is the weight of the whole set up. I have a Vista 2 set up with my Ronin and Glidecam 4000, and I definite think the weight helps with inertia acted onto the entire set up. But very much like a glidecam; its a pretty big learning curve! Iʻm excited to see you guys tinker around with this and hopefully see a updated video with more time put into it. Keep it up!

When movement is the issue, I stabilise in post, shoot at a higher rate, and choose more pixels above my project delivery. Having more frames and higher definition capture, gives lots of buffer and fidelity in post. Once stablilised, only then do I change the frame rate down to project delivery.

To properly fly the camera, you need a LOT of practice. Two hours is just not going to cut it. A rig like this - or even a regular Steadicam - is not something you take out of the box and start using. And the vest needs to be fitted properly. It looks to be very loose around the shoulders. (Edit: I know you addressed this in your pinned comment but hear me out...some additional suggestions are coming) Your back and shoulders are supposed to bear the load. After all, the amount of padding on the shoulders is there for a reason. So given you are a bit skinny as you said, you would probably be better off modifying the vest with more padding or getting one a size smaller, if they make them. Knowing from someone I trust and who operates a Steadicam, if the vest kinda almost feels a little bit tight, chances are it is just right. There should be no wiggle room at all when you have the camera mounted to the vest. You also want to maybe make an addition to your vest in the shape of a velcro tie-down for the camera arm, on the shoulder opposite the mounting point. Because if you put the camera down briefly, you still have the spring loaded arm flapping in the breeze and potentially hitting stuff (or other people).
Another idea would be to get a stand that you can hang the camera pole on. That way you can comfortably put the camera pole down without having to lay it in the dirt or lean it against something. A C-stand, a bracket that fits your pole and maybe a sandbag or two are good for this. Even with all that said, while this might indeed be an awesome budget option, there is a reason why Arri's "real deal" costs like 50+ times what Joe Schmoe would pay for the knock-off, besides maybe some degree of low key brand hype and the cost-is-no-concern industry that Arri makes their stuff for.
Things like this rig being cumbersome, or that it forces you to fight with the spring when getting low shots - are these not the same downsides you would find with the Arri?

You need to learn how the arm moves before doing any major movements like bending down. The spring helps you carry the weight however I use the g50-x arm which is top range for heavy-ish rigs. You'll find the basic arms do get quite painful after time due to no ISO control which is why your struggling. Always stand up straight. I used to use a chest plate vest but im now using the exo vest from Tiffen as its designed better. You should be able to add padding with built in zips if your vest supports that. Balancing wise it needs to be neutral so you dont have the two second drop time from a traditional steadicam. You will find it easier to operate from low to high mode. I have used a similar rig but i prefer steadicams. I do loose out on the instant low to high mode however i can switch my rig to low mode in 10 seconds as i know it so well. Its not for everyone using rigs like this.

Love how it's called the Thanos haha we use to have gimbal vests and arms and the whole nine yards. But now we just use Ronins and hand hold them. We haven't had the need to do or use anything else. Great video!
I advise all to train in Bagua if they really want the ability to handle any gimbals or orbiters... just saying.

I think it comes down to how often your actually going to use it. If this is a selling feature for your production company, like having a drone, its very worth it. As for the price, its not that much. That's the cost of 1 lens. And how many lens do we buy that don't get used much but we can't part ways with because we need it once in a blue moon. I'd say for what its worth, pros and the cons, it is worth it if you can use it on a reasonable regular base.

Honestly, this review was litlle bit bad. Because the whole "rig" idea is to take the weight of the camera away from the camera operator. Otherwise, moving with a camera weighing many pounds would be really awkward. In this video, the weight of the camera is a DSLR.

This is not a gimbal, it's a combination of gimbal and steadycam. What I am interested to find out is what kind of appealing shots can be done with Arri Trinity that cannot be achieved with this device, if there are any.
The contraption is cool looking but i thing all the shots you jst did with the car thing you would have done with the ronin on its own. This is just adding more weight and stress to yourself. The arri trinity is made for huge camera rigs thats why you need a big gimbal with the vest but when it comes to smaller cameras this is just not practical at all ... Just use ronin or zhyun on its own. The only benefit i think it an have is just impress the clients thats it ..
But you can impress your clients with stuff like that and you can up your pricing😄😏

I feel like the review was super nieche, so i wouldnt use this as info to buy or not. Honest opinion, there are way more in detail reviews of similar products that actually bring out the good and the bad from the system [no experience of this product, but of similar]
The product is super expensive but you can build your own from a vest and glidecam for fraction of the price and judging from the footage it even performs better.
As a user of similar system i feel like you didnt do it justice with this review. I'd love to see another video of you guys testing out self built version of this with a proper good vest that actually suits you guys and a good glidecam to go in place of this one. If you do deside to "re-visit" the subject i suggest looking at other arri "minity" videos for inspiration!
But at the end of the day it comes down to preferance.

This is what I did. Found a vest with arm for $250. Mounted my AK2000 ($200) on my glidecam ($100). Whole rig for under 600, gimbal included.
Compare this with just the Ronin RS2
Hitting your elbow and saying the weight of the best is on your stomach clearly shows you just don’t get it. I have one and the way I adjust the vest, the weight is definitely on my shoulders.
These companies need to be careful who they get to review their products, maybe your frame is too small for it or something. It’s a great piece of kit.

Geez man. Never operated a steadicam, ez rig, or glidecam vest/arm set up and trashing a product you don't really know anything about or have experience operating. The main purpose of a set up like this is to eliminate the z axis and give you more range of motion than just a handheld gimbal.
You're also operating the rig wrong. How do you expect the arm to absorb any shock when you're holding it from the arm itself? You're just going to the shake the camera with your movements. Aye aye aye. Smh.
This UA-cam channel is soooo underrated
There is no point reviewing a system when the operator has bad form and the system isnt even balanced properly. Probably a good idea to do a course first.
