  • In this video I show you the process I use to diagnose the HVAC unit on a GMC Acadia. The customer complaint is that it blows HOT air on the driver side vents and cold air on the passenger side vents.

Yep. Never did like throwing parts at a vehicle until I discovered the problem. That gets expensive. Most all computer problems started about 1982 with the electronic throttle body replacing carburetors. Hard to believe it's been that long...38 years and still have issues come up. Miss the days, in this case, of just shooting a little oil onto a heater control cable.

Great video. Thank you!!!👌to anyone that has a similar issue, I replaced the actuator at first but it wasn't working, (doesn't matter drivers or passenger side same thing.) but my driver side was only stuck on hot. After I replaced it, it really didn't do much. I don't have the fancy machine so I had to recalibrate the temperature manually, you have to set the temperature to either hot or cold, (see the actuator turn) I set it to cold so now the electrics/actuator is set to cold. Now have to manually turn the thermostat all the way to cold so this way the electric actuator and the thermostat are aligned together to cold. From there I couldn't get the actuator to sit nicely to screw in so I turned the temp up on the dash a little until the screw holes lined up. The point of these instructions is so you don't ruin your new actuator by turning it manually and to calibrate it. Lastly I unplugged the 15 Amp HVAC fuse under passenger side to recalibrate it that way as well.

Thank you for this. We just got my girlfriend’s 2011 GMC Acadia back from having the dealership work on the “transmission shifter module assembly” because the gear shift wouldn’t shift all the way into park, release the trigger on the gear shift knob, and let you turn the key all the way off and take it out of the ignition (a video on how to fix this problem without having to take it to the dealership next time would be glorious).
The vehicle was/is also having the exact problem you solved in this* video, but after the dealership told us, “...for the ac concern, the ac compressor is locked up and rear evap is leaking so both need to be replaced, cost of this repair is $2,516.81,” we told them to hold off on messing with the AC. I personally can’t afford an arm, leg, left testicle, and first-born child to “fix” the ac compressor when the passenger side blows cold air just fine. I think I’ll just order a $77 AC Delco or certified original GM parts actuator and see if that doesn’t just fix the problem.
Much appreciated; keep up the good work!

I am fortunate enough to live a little over an hour away from SMA and I was just about ready to give them a call for a fix but with the help from some you tube videos, that Eric made I think I have solved my mysterious problem with my 2009 Nissan Frontier A/C issue. The blower fan worked but the A/C cut out on speeds #3 and #4. After testing my system the way Eric did on another Frontier that he published, I hit the books; Schematics, tested the circuits, relays, fuses, blower motor, Fan control switch ,etc. After all tests I took one last chance before driving to Avoca and installed a new blower resistor pack. It seems to be fixed now and I even found a loose set of contacts in the Blower relay socket in the IPDM engine room while I was testing. Thanks Eric for sharing your knowledge with the world, I would not hesitate to drive the 75 minutes to have "the Master" work on my vehicles for these weird issues. Thanks again. I hope it really is fixed. i did not check the amp draw on the blower motor however. I have been watching SMA videos for a few years that is the first place I go to research a problem and get a little entertainment thrown in as well. Love ya, E.

I have bought a lot of "one pocket" tee shirts though not as many as "regular" tee shirts. Then I start racking my brain, I don't ever remember buying a tee shirt with two pockets! And, I am thinking, why, yes, two pockets would be handy but I can't find out why t-shirts have only one pocket at most.! Why, Eric, why? But you weren't done!! You showed the mini ratchet set and said, "You can stick it on your belt. Its good for those people with that on-the-go life style." I just repaired my A/C automatic blend motor assembly by disassembling the unit, inspected the gears, inspected the large final drive gear and its copper fingers that slide on the variable resistor pad. I put more tension on the copper fingers and used the surplus lube from inside and applied it to the gears. Reinstalled the unit and started my 2012 GMC Sierra with the A/C on, varied the temp setting cold to hot and back again, IT WORKS! Just my time and no parts.

Another tech looked at it and tried the HVAC control with no success. @@miketeeveedub5779 That's exactly what I found when I replaced an actuator on my Dodge last year. At least the Mopar part is made in the US.

Dude, the amount of knowledge in that cranium of yours is incredible! Who says the trades are easy? If we could convert your knowledge and common sense to a measureable index it would be greater than a law degree or a doctorate in phylosophy. Sorry, that might not be a compliment now that I think about it. Anyway, it amazes me how much you know and how creative your brain is so you can troubleshoot so many things. Thanks for the enjoyment.

Those Wera Zyklop Mini ratchets really are a lovely thing. They really are "mini" - as in ~3.5" long, hide in the palm of the hand dinky. Had one in my tool bag for a few years now and it is a joy to use.
Sorry if that sounds like a shill - it's not, just a happy customer.

I have the same 2012 Acadia. Just changed the actuator that directs air flow to bottom middle or top. Was on the passenger side and what a PITA to get to. But got er done. Didn't have to recalibrate. Plugged in the new one before mounting and adjusted the gear to the same position as the old one then installed.

I've replaced 5 of these so far, the front three on my Traverse and a couple on a friend's Enclave, so far none have been for the rear AC/heat. The two on the right side are bit of a PITA, and so is the fuse you have to pull to have it recalibrate if you don't have a scan tool. On all of them that I've replaced it was a through-hole resistor that crapped itself all over the mostly-bare PCB, so in theory you could just change that if you have the time.

Probably not seeing rear unit actuator failures because they are seldom used.

I knew what this was as soon as I saw it. I had this happen in my Ford Fusion. The cool thing is you prove it with diagnostics. On mine you’re supposed to disassemble the whole dash to change it because it’s in a horrible place up high in the dash to the right of the steering wheel. I ended up changing it with a 3 foot Phillips head from the side of the dash on one screw and a thumb wheel socket on the other. Total nightmare.

Had to change this on my '03 Silverado last month. Drivers side went hot as could be in South Louisiana humid heat. Also had to change the mode door actuator a couple years back as it would only work on defrost or the floor. Cheap fixes, but a little snug to get to. That Wera tool kit would've been nice to have!

I'm showing my age but I remember the big red diagnostic cabinet with all the leads and now you can hold the led read out in your hands amazing technology regards John
