GMC Sierra: No Horn
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- In this video I have a look at a GMC Sierra that came into the shop with a complaint of no horn. However, that was it, all other steering wheel functions worked and no air bag light on. Didn't take long to run down the real issue. -Enjoy!

Another shop would have guessed, ordered the clock spring, and put it in fixing the connector along the way. Customer would have never known. Thanks for continuing to show there is integrity in this world.
You're not wrong but it happens to the best techs including myself.
Once again, Eric demonstrates his well grounded troubleshooting technique.
Well grounded
😂 nice
Haha.... truth, on multiple levels
BAHAHAHAA I see what you did there. Grounded....nice
I hate to sound negative, but are you positive??
Don't know about anybody else, but I swear I saw pointy ears on Eric given how logically he approached this problem.

Lol.... “make sure you unhook the battery” and then you blow the horn? 🤣..... always learn something... thank you for posting your videos..
Y’all stay safe and healthy..
Do as he says, not as he does
I never even notice until I read your comment... lol
I noticed that too! LoL 😂😆
@@PontoonGrandpa Right on. As a pro, Eric has the option of doing it "safely" or doing it quickly. You and I need to be safe, we ain't Eric O.
@@G31mR lol... I agree!😊
I wonder if Eric ever thought his channel would get so big! Over 500k subscribers is impressive and well deserved
Should be over a million subscribers. A lot of people are missing out.
He and ChrisFix are the tops.
Legend too I might add
@@flagmichael Chrisfix is ok, but nobody goes into detail like Eric. I knew early on his channel would grow like crazy. I was a subscriber when there were just a few hundred!
@@flagmichael I watch Fix, but his results are baked in. His videos are pre-ordained as being relatively simple for anyone to accomplish. Does anyone here believe "If I can do it. you...." Maybe for 10-15 % of the stuff here. A million dollars worth of scan tools can probably get us to 30%. The other 70 is Eric knows what he's doing.
This video reminds me of my Dad's 1985 S10 Blazer. Back in the 90s, the spring metal that comprised the switch in the steering wheel had a finger that broke off. It tumbled around when he turned the wheel, often resulting in a string of "angry driver" honks on occasion. This always seemed to happen at the most inopportune times. The best one was at around midnight, on a nice summer night, while going around a slight bend on a city street. You could see the lights go on in the houses as he woke up nearly everyone on the block who had their bedroom windows open.
It was at the repair shop the next day after that.
I hated that Blazer, it had the 2.8 V6 with the carb, ugh!
@@maxrx7 Yeah, it was a pooch, no doubt.
I've noticed over the years that you have really polished the outros on your videos Eric. Be nice to see you do another day at the shop especially since the extra hired help should allow you to do a more indepth recording of the crew.
They snap together like a Leggo. That ol' South Main high tech troubleshooting terminology. I'm gonna need a class in South Main terminology just to keep up with you guys.🤩🤩🤩
The day after watching this video, I didn't pass my State Safety check inspection due to my horn not working. I did just like Eric O and tried my panic button on my remote and the horns worked fine. Then I noticed that some of my steering wheel controls didn't work. Turned out to be a bad clock spring for my car. Expensive part but at least I saved on the labor by doing it myself. Thanks Eric.
I do emergency roadside assistance here in Australia and I find myself saying, (in your accent) “well there’s your problem lady”.
I'd like to hear that, in your Aussie New York accent.
@@christopherrabaldo3377 That would be _really_ cool!
4 commercials in a 12 minute video = no bueno. In an Eric O video = totally worth it! Somebody screwed around with one of those airbag wires - the sheathing is scraped off quite a bit. I would have had a close look at that and taped it up before popping the horn button back in. How many thousand others said, “Ivan no parts required repair!”? 👍👏🔧
Just so you know, you have a viewer from India. I wish we had more Mechanics like you here. Keep up the good work!
YOU are awesome. Thanks for your videos. I have fixed a few cars and diagnosed a few cars with your tips. Keep up the great work!!!
Interesting how the horn ground under the air bag was disconnect that makes more sense then all the buttons on steering wheel working but the horn nice find Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Another example of "It use to be a hot wire and ground". Great video thanks for the lesson..
This should be shown in classrooms. Very informative but also entertaining.
"Here's the right way to go about it." Eric O is a great teacher.
Step on the brake, put your left hand in, put your right leg out, disconnect the ground and shake it all around.....I always forget the right leg out part in my diagnostics. Keep up the amazing work SMA!
It's always the Best Buy guy and his dirty mitts. 🙂 I know this vid is two years old but I just had to replace a clock spring in one of my old trucks. I'm not anywhere near as thorough as you but I did at least short out the horns to make sure they weren't the culprit. Lol Thanks for making these vids --it's always a pleasure to see what you and Mrs. O are up to.
I was thinking "I'm not so sure" when you called it as a clock spring. Glad you left that in there; shows how easy it is to make an incorrect assumption.
The parts cannon was loaded, but he gave it another thought before lighting the fuse. I understand the logic: "What are the chances that it's the horn switch?"..... well now that I've said that out loud, the chances are much higher. Better make sure.
Everybody glances down that dark alley occasionally.
Ivan will be happy💞
Good job Eric!!!!
No Parts Required!
Victory tour engage. Commence waving.
My first video I watched from you was the power steering pump in your Hondu Ridgey. You did that one outside in a farm yard. I was a fan since then. (I have a Ridgey.)
What Eric O. does outside in a farm yard may or may not be our business.
Another Morning, another SMA Video.
Thanks for this.
I work in IT and am stuck in HomeOffice for one year now.
Some days I feel like I could just go to your shop and start working there because I like the style, the atmosphere and the fact that I must use my noggin' for once.
Cheers
Yes. Just need a bumper sticker that says: horn broken, watch for finger.
Lol
@Death Wish lol
No horn? No wiring! Great diagnosis! That connector was so loose it could have been a GM assembly error, and it fell off over time. Because "Nobody forgets the details like GM".
Cannot tell you how much I appreciate these troubleshooting vids!!! Make no mistake, this is where the wizardry comes in. Too many "parts cannon pirates" looking for a quick buck! Thanks Eric!!!!
At the Chrysler minivan factory we took a small screw driver and put a small notch in the blade end to catch the spring clip on the air bag. Great video bro.
I love it when I am following the troubleshooting tree, and I test something, and it says to skip a bunch of steps. Makes the job so much easier.
On top of everything else and I’m talking about knowledge, this man has a personality. I know some Eskimos that need some refrigerators. You don’t find them like this on every street corner.
You’re so lucky in automotive that you have right to repair which gives you access to all these diagrams. In technology repair a lot of times we gotta bust out the ol’ white board and multimeter. Appreciate your hard work
'Access to all the diagrams ain't free! Neither are his diag tools, its expensive saving money. As a very less skilled home mechanic I use regular car manuals (H) but they miss a lot of stuff out. Nothing like experience and good tools to make the job easy and quick!
Where does he get those diagrams?

It was a news channel seeing if you’re an honest mechanic. Lol
News channels are not that savvy. I recall one sending some appliance like a clock-radio around for service; they hired an engineer to set something up so he blew a fuse and put that in. The news channel was incensed that two of the shops they took it to wanted to replace the power transformer the fuse fed. Their engineer didn't know what the good techs know: if a fuse is blown, something blew it. Replacing a fuse will get you a call-back.
That's a good diagnoses! Smart with the key. My truck had the contacts on the horn itself corrode so I had to put some new contacts on it. Took awhile to figure that out.
Do we have work comp coverage , I got hurt when we tumbled on the dash . LOL
You too?!
Nope, non-union shop, get back to work.

Eric, AWESOME work as always enjoyable as always.
Your inner Ivan is really starting to show 😎. No parts required
I was on the interstate drumming on my steering wheel once, and when I slowed down (it was a noisy interstate) I realized the horn was stuck on. Pulled the fuse, shared by the wipers, and it didn't rain even though I was in Seattle.
"I keep it wiggling till I feel the tip hit something there" HaHa Thanks for the laugh.

Always a great job man ! Good video and helpful as always .
Always interesting always entertaining Eric you deserve over a billion subscribers man!
I work at a GM dealer in Canada, the airbag recall is only for the passenger side airbag, great video!
If I remember correctly, the Takata recall was humidity sensitive, so the further south you get, the more important it is to get it done. I don't know if this is about the same issue.
Thanks for the info-- '08 Silverado LTZ
@@CheezyDee same one, GM was putting priority on humid climates first as they is something like 6 million effected vehicles
There is also an older recall for drivers side air bag.I know I still have the GM Letter and dealership says they don't have the part for recall
@@sodbuster518able haven't heard of that one, but would have been before my time, just did a quick search for it and couldn't find anything on it
Eric to the rescue! Great job
Always hated doing under dash work. Hard on your back and neck. I used to install air conditioners in escorts at the fort garage. Learned to be a contortionist and to buy pain meds. LOL. Good video bud
I have an 02 Pontiac Grand Prix and had to replace this set of contacts thingy that is apart of the ignition switch. Under the dash near the column work. I've had the car long enough to have to do it again. Second time I just pulled the drivers seat out. Then I could relax and put my feet up on the rear seat.
Coworker hits head on car every time you honk it😀
Vanessa honked the horn while Eric was under the hood in one video.
Good diagnosis the horn is button in middle of the steering wheel enjoy the video tell Mrs o hay
Thank you. I learn about the horn contracts.
Great Diag.Eric O
Good afternoon Eric
A logical approach led to the cause. Nice video.
269 views in 2 minutes! We're all addicted.
As Eric says: "better get a life"
(*_*)
Watch him in the morning before I go out in my shop I always learn a few things from him and been working on cars for a long time
Remember on the older stuff the ground strap that crossed the flexible steering shaft connector would corrode and the horn would lose it's ground. At least Best Buy didn't use those worthless blue scotch-lok connectors that cut into the wires. Good video!
I was just thinking of this but no reason to copy the comment , usually making a new ground git the customer “horny” again
Nice job as always, Mr O! You do sound tired though! Time for a vacation! Lol.
Nice catch! 👍
Be nice to see or hear the conversation with the owner, yeah, all was wrong was a disconnected ground that didn’t look factory.
I was just wishing something good to watch!!! Eric O to the rescue!! 😄
Dam spade connection, remind me of a fault I had on my own Datsun Sunny (UK) 1980's .every 3 or for 4 months when I go round a right hand turn the engine would stall. It would restart immediately with the key and then be fine for another 3 or 4 months. I found the fault by accidentally when touching the wiring harness I noticed the spade connector on the low voltage side of the coil was just slipped on between the boot and spades when when you turned the corner it must of broke connection just enough to kill the ignition but not every time. it took about 4 years to find that one by accident I lent on the harness while doing some thing else and just notice the move of the spade.
Choice 1 , repair stock horn .
Choice 2 , install k5la train horn !
( Me personally , choice 2 😁 )
Still gotta fix the steering wheel ground wire, unless you want a separate pull cord for the train horn!
@@KenLyns , yep , gotta have the pull cord

Might just have been a dodgy terminal from manufacture that's worked it's way off. Good find Dr. O.
Waiting for the "snip and yank" of the aftermarket remote start. How bout it Dr. O?
SMA saves the customer from the parts cannon, yet again!
That ground spade looked so loose (not even any witness marks on the terminal from where it had been slid on at the factory) it probably just fell off through vibration/the jigglies!
I have a ford f550 at work and the horn was the first thing to stop working. The wheel buttons were next.
EXCELLENT troubleshooting as always Eric! Good job!

Possible
He said it fit loosely in the video. The guy probably hit a pothole and it fell off
Good job. Good find.
That was an easy one! Thanks Eric!
And today's recipient of the Ivan award is.....
Many models have 2 different horns and circuits for the steering wheel and key fob soundings. Guy at work wired the steering wheel to the security horn and well.. customer complained his horn wasn't loud..
Your powers of deduction are amazing Sherlock.
"It's elementary, my dear Watson! The horn works when the fob is activated, but not when the horn contacts in said steering wheel are depressed. Thus, the problem, and the solution, laid elsewhere. A careful examination of the physical evidence revealed the cause of the malfunction was inside the steering wheel airbag compartment, viz, a disconnected wire which prevented the horn contacts from sounding the horn. Once again science and good detective work solve the case. Now, bring me some tea if you please."
Great video. Thanks for the detailed wiring diagram explanation.
recall is for the passenger air bag
Love easy fixes. Makes day go faster 👍
