So what you're telling me is that in order to defeat Demogorgon, you would need to slash through millions of demons, turn his generals against each other or just kill them, kill his kids, make his girlfriend betray him, gain the assistance of Dagon, Oblox-Ob, or Orcus - all of which would immediately turn on you as soon as he was killed - and then slash through millions more vying for the crown? Sounds like one hell of a campaign!

So theoretically, a Paladin Tiefling descended from Demogorgon could become the Chaotic Good Prince of Demons (at least for a while), and have an easier time of getting that title than even Orcus? Well, I know what I want my next campaign to be.
In 5e there are no such things as Tieflings descended form Demogorgon. In fact you can't play any race that comes from the Abyss in 5e, unless you count unearthed arcana Abyssal Tieflings and other homebrew.
@Alexander Simons I didn't say that it wouldn't fit the lore, but that in 5e Tieflings are specifically made to be devil related choosing to ignoring the older lore. You could still play as a Tiefling of Demogordon in 5e, but you'd still have to homebrew it or use the UA subrace
What you should get is those kids had no idea how to play D&D considering they randomly encountered A demogorgon...and mistook a two-headed tentacled baboon dinosaur for that creature from the Upside Down.
@@Andersonzabuza Oh yeah, you are probably right! :D you have no idea how approximatively we first played D&D when two friends and I first tried it by ourselves. To our credit it was a very early version of it and either there were not a lot rules, either we lacked some slips (yeah, it was even not a book of rules, but a collection of some kind if big cards / slips). ^^ If I remember correctly, you could only be either an elven mage, *_or_* a human warrior *_or_* a hafling rogue (their was probably also a priest class linked to another specific race). Was it only some simplified "demo" of D&D, or a very early version of it? I don't know. But we had some fun, that's all that count. ^^
@@bobiboulon Yeah, i don't think any table starts out fully following or even understanding the rules. At least not the one i started in. @person person we did and it was disappointing and nerfed to hell... Not even to the abyss, just to hell (The gorgon is a monster in DnD... And it's not even a strong Medusa, it's just a metal bull with poison gas) I demand a patch
Wait, you need charisma to claim the crown. Imagine Graz'zt or Obex-Ub climbing to the gaping maw, only to be met Chad Thundercock, the horny bard who helped defeat Demogorgon, they would just give up then and there
I think something happened with the developers, and the full release is postponed indefinitely. You should check out Gorgon it's no where near the same thing tbh, but I'm a fan it's got some variety and story is interesting.
Oh my Rhexx... You are by far the best DnD lore teller! The Atmosphere in your episodes allways hits me right to my core! getting inspired to so many scenarios in my own campaign over and over again! Never stop what you are doing, and whenever i can fully support myself i'll be your proud patreon!
To find a compromise in the Paradox that is Demogorgon is to give him something only Lolth obtained: The ability to ascend from demon into a Higher God...probably wind up becoming a new Therazdun.
I am officially begging you to make a video about Tasha. She is such a fascinating character and I was very disappointed that some snark between sections was the only exposure we got to her in the Tashas Cauldron book
The Eladrin managing to reverse-corrupt a layer of the abyss is one of the most chad things in D&D ever and why the fae courts deserve some serious respect
Not if Your PC could "Body Snatch" any being touched(or consume the spirit/soul/bady) as fast as each new avatar can also "body snatch" mor avatars Though my now long since retired "Merchant"(NPC) prefers to low key buy good souls off the black market in both the Abyss and Hells to set them free
That's Aameul's favorite song. Hathradiah's favorite is "Saturday Night's Alright (for fighting)". Epic quest for a bard is to figure out how to make a duet out of those two songs. The reward is his own two spire island in Demogorgon's ocean, all the succubi he could desire, and the anatomical changes necessary to please them all.
@@Michael-cf9cj It's weird that this has only gotten 75 likes. Are there really that few Elton John fans who also play D&D? Strange times we're living in.
I love how his actions mirror his nature, his setting is a salt ocean and a jungle, his body is mostly reptilian with mammalian heads, things that seem like they would be contrasting to find in nature
When you realize there is so much Powerplay, betrayal, manipulation and intrigue in the abyss that you could basically have an entire game of Thrones style series set purely there
If you ask me, Demogorgon needs to keep on existing for a reason. For if he were to truly die, the shift in the Balance would be astronomically catastrophic. Though it's interesting to see one of the raw embodiments of power & madness to be such a caring family man.
I like how the subtext here works. You slay Demogorgon and assume his crown and you are inevitably doomed to become Demogorgon despite your brief time not being him. So, like Asmodeus IS his plane, Demogorgon is his plane. Still, despite his "death", I am still team Orcus. ORCUS!
For those interested in running a campaign that involves a lot of this lore, I'd suggest the 3rd edition adventure path "The Savage Tide" from Dungeon Magazine #139 - #150. I ran it converted to 5th edition and my players loved it.
Not too long ago I finished a (multy-years Long) adventure where one of the chapters was defeating Demogorgon. It started with a bard I originally was hopping to play as "Robbin Hood", called "Noble Daggers". In hiis origin adventure he ended possesed and corrupted by every demon we encounter, but he was able to roll proper WILL saves, al though we knew SOME effects would take place. So he turned evil, but with each encounter he learned more and more about demons, their LAWS, pacts and deals. Skip many adventures later and he became the "King-Ping" of Demons and deals with mortals, accentually building a small Demon City, (located over the capital city of Drows so they also had a place on the surface to call a "home") This city was pure Lawful-Evil, a place where mortals could trade with Demons and some of the worst scum in the world, and my character as Leader would trade a constant supply of Souls to diferent Demons. He him self trade his own Soul with multiple Demons and even a few mid rank Demon-Lords in such overcomplicated and twisted deals that our own world most evil Lawyers would feel proud+respect, and thats almost the feeling those demons had. Eventually do to a perfectly planed "betrayal" by character "Nobble Daggers" dies and NO demon can claim what was rightfully theirs, since this death nullified the contracts, causing a massive Civil War between demons. Skip a few adventures and a self proclaimed "NEW Prince od Demons" shows up. "Sreggad Elbon" (at this point out characters are way passed lv 20) Orquestrates the death of Demogorgon. Allies with the other big baddies and even with angels and "Old Gods" promising the death of Demogorgon. Obviously not a single band will hold their word or miss the chance to destroying every other side. Long story short, I actually DID a few of the things to weaken Demogorgon, lower its CR, even confused the 2 heads to attack each other with help of the wispers of Dagon (it wasnt him personally, we had an old artifact that wispered his voice and command)(this time wispering to bouth heads at once, causing the anger and confusion) Long story short at the moment of its death and with almost all main baddies killing each other for the double cround "Sreggad Elbon" did the unthinkable and used all the power and magic he had as new prince of Demons to physical and metaphorically destroy the crown! "no more Prince of Demons, only his Law, because no Demon, angel or Mortal was able to stop him, by the simple mention of his true Name" as Sreggad Elbon IS Nobble Daggers", and simply banished into some far away dimension (no-one knows where or can find him) In this short comment is obvious, but this story took place over 3-5 years, with different groups and NO-one ever realized that, NO master or player. So it was by best "Joke". Adventure/destiny took away my character, so I addapted and accepted my fate, and decided I would take something for my own. So I did, it was MY character who killed Demogorgon and took away the chance to claim the tittle/crown Shame I didnt knew about Obox-ob! I would have added him to the storry....maybe I WILL...maybe Sreggad is currently talking with Obox-ob, having a laugh about his master Prank.
I'm just imagining a player managing to take Demogorgons place, learn the true name of Asmodeus, and find all of the books that hold the names of the Yugoloths, and doing all of this crazy BS through sheer Minmax-Instigator energy in a campaign where none of this even relates to the plot. And then I realize if anyone in my D&D group were to do that it would probably be me. 😅 Maybe it's a good thing that I'm the forever DM.
So came down to kick his godllngs asses but this was after he himself got busted for letting his godlings run Amok That said, the Abyss isnt a natural occuurance,it was a botched attempt of invasion when the Chained god managed to shake mind control by losing a divine rank....so I doubt the "Balance" willbe enforced there The Devils, however, are a balancing force and that contract they have with the gods is binding......the very least they would have something to say about you messing with the contract to take condemned souls
I was always under the impression that Dagon likes his position as the "power behind the throne". A superior candidate to be influenced by Dagon is possible, but Dagon plays a very long game. Tying Demogorgon down with allies, feeding him enemies and constructing more then half his plane to his liking. Dagon has rendered Demogorgon as ineffectual as possible, setting the stage, as well as becoming an arbitrator of the abyss. I don't think Demogorgon's downfall has ever become a goal, but leaving it open to interpretation is a extremely beneficial bit of persuasion. Let them think Dagon is a petty feeble creature holding on to the last bit of power, his last morsels, craving for more. When really Dagon has groomed this entire situation to only benefit himself. It's just as it was the last time the abyss was in upheaval, prepared and ready to be claimed by the strongest beast and Dagon will teach that beast to respond accordingly.
@@Voldrim359 Making up head cannon and sharing it as if it was fact is sort of the idea really. Law and Chaos work in a weird way in D&D. The demons of the abyss are supposed to represent complete chaos, yet they have armies and generals, and such things do require at least some order.
Based on that definitition, what would Graz'zt be categorized as? Assuming the rumors about him are true, that he's the child of Asmodeus and Pale Night, he wouldn't be a tenari demon. He'd be half obyrith/half celestial (assuming this took place before Asmodeus' fall) or half devil if it took place after the fall. Related to this, could Graz'zt be part of Pazuzu's plans? Maybe laying with Pale Night was one of the thing's Asmodeus had to do to get his Ruby Rod?... By asking this question, I'm sure I've marked myself for death and eternal torture, but it's still an interesting question.
Graz'zt might actually be a play by Asmodeus to keep Obo from gaining the title should Demogorgon fall. Obo would be a far greater threat than Demogorgon
9:55 Dagon, Pazuzu, Obox-Ob take a pic: the Queen of Chaos crashes it. This is why there can't be peace in the abyss. This is why we can't have good things
Gotta say. This is my favorite type of video of yours. Deep detailed videos about powerful beings or races. The kobold video is also one of my favorites.
Speaking of the Abyss, you should do a video on the Chained god Tharizdun. If I understand it correctly he was the creator of the Abyss. He seems like an interesting topic and related to these last few videos.
Dungeon magazine's last issues had a campaign where you kill and possibly replace Demogorgon. They called it "The Savage Tide". Utterly epic, level 1 to 20+.
@MrRhexx I just quickly wanted to take the time to thank you for your videos. I often listen to them to fall asleep at night and they are actually part of how I got into DnD. They are amazingly researched and have an been inspiration for many campaigns I have DM'd so far. I hope you can keep this series going for as long as possible and wish you the best of luck in any endeavor and good health for the future!
I subscribed as I thought that this video was above and beyond the stories you told before. Keep up on doubling up your talents as an all powerful and knowing bardic sage of all and everything.
When you mentioned her right at the end the very first question that ran across my mind was "What impossible price could such a simple lump of flesh have could even comprehend paying for that level of..... insight..., not understanding because those are two very different concepts. to be able to pull that off?" Then before my brain could attempt atmospheric entry a shadow of much darker things. Because everything has a price. Every spell wielder learns this lesson without fail no exceptions. She wants the crown. She's clearly in far too deep just even knowing to to appear at that capital city alone. I would not feel all that bold saying she NEEDS that crown. Because the crown is a key to unlock what she EXISTS for. But the real question is not what comes after that. That, funny enough, would be the easy part. Use IT. The what and how many of are just needless conjecture. Until that it/its would be revealed she might as well be petting newborn phasebeast who's name starts with Shro. A single wondrous moment. Just that one incalculably immeasurable instance. Its all anything ever needed ever. If she really really really really just oh so impossibly decided to do the most chaotic thing ever. You know... Go true neutral. The pull of the Abyss wouldn't seem so chaotic anymore in that one moment. Because all it took was one moment for some random ass punk with a chip on his shoulder to completely destroy magic as it once was. Because it also only took but a moment for a newborn to fix it as utilitarian as it could.
I like the idea of turning Demogorgon's girlfriend against him or away from him to weaken him, or killing his kids, or finding Obox-Ob and somehow convincing that horror to pay Demogorgon a visit. However, there is no way doing any of these, or even all of them, will reduce his CR by "10 points". There's no question Demogorgon should be a CR 30 creature. Since that's the hard max CR in 5e, he doesn't have to be barely CR 30. You could weaken him considerably and he might still be CR 30. Maybe he weakens enough be CR 29 or 28. That's still a very big deal. If word gets out that he's weakened, you could get some upexpected help from Orcus and/or Graz'zt. Even his own minions might turn on him if they smell blood in the water. The denizens of a plane of pure chaos and evil are not likely known for their loyalty.
Thank you so much for making videos about the prince of demons, this is going to be the secret BBEG in my on going campaign so all of this information is going to make the game so much more interesting lol
There's that "False Hydra" monster which has become a very popular homebrew, but what about a "False Demogorgon"? A Demon created by a Sibriex or powerful Wizard that's like a combination of other demons made to resemble Demogorgon.
It would be interesting if Malkenthet and Oboxob had a relationship, and then see what kind of spawn would come from that. The act of that as well as the blow to Demogorgon might be pretty bad.
I think it would be really cool to have a campaign focused on winning the crown from Demogorgon and then trying to reshape the Abyss toward a good purpose. I don't think it's likely, but it would be interesting to see how it would be attempted and anticipating the consequences.
@@Doubleranged1 transforming it from chaos is impossible. Transforming it from evil however...if a Chaotic Good person or creature with a strong enough will became Prince of Demons it MIGHT be possible.
Thanks for the video! I always love your lore dives even if they usually aren't with the current edition, cool lore can always be made cannon again by me when I'm running the game!
The Succubus being a demon has never made much sense to me because they aren't the almost fully typical fierce demonic creation of chaos body and intent. I can se where succubus might be chaotic, but only partially because they don't seem to want to follow rules, but not much else about them. It would make more sense for them to have been angels that were fallen and corrupted (not sure why they would have been fighting the war if they were angels of love though...), maybe if they just didn't agree with the strict rules of "love" that the heavens demanded so they chose to leave.
After the conclusion of the inner and outer planes series can you do a series about all of the demon lords? They are all very interesting with Juiblex being my favorite!
in 4e's lore Demo was once killed by a mortal who gained the title of Prince. He didn't return by ritual, or cheating with an avatar, though. The abyss just remade him, which I think is SO much better. He's even more unkillable, because the Abyss simply will not allow his death.
I've had people argue with me that demons are always inarguably evil in all of their actions and can never ever under ANY circumstances trend Neutral, and yet you're telling me the biggest, meanest, most evil demon of them all... Is capable of feeling actual love, and becomes genuinely physically and emotionally hurt by loss? Some shit isn't adding up here.
That was a so so SO awesome video!! Precisely much of the lore used coincides with that which i have been using for carefully crafting my homebrew campaign and worldbuild - including "planar" ecosystems - and i'm happy to see that my deductions were mostly correct seeing that in the video all comes together, including the Law-Chaos primal war which always thought was so important to give sense to the current planar ecosystem. Btw SO HYPED also for the obyrith and Abyss history videos!! Keep it up master!! :)
My DM created a role within the multiverse for my character, once he reached the end of this story and I gave him up to be an NPC, called the "Fateweaver". The Fateweaver checks-in on timelines and watches over them with others who hold the mantle, akin to something like the real Nick Fury and Uatu the Watcher. Now, a unique ability of a truly fulfilled Fateweaver is to be able to occupy the mind of a creature or person who witnessed a specific event they wish to observe. I asked him about what kind of dangerous knowledge a Fateweaver should avoid. He mentioned that it was possible, through enough patient study and observation over time, to learn exactly how the Abyss was thrown into the plane of Chaos by Asmodeus. Whether or not someone with that knowledge is powerful enough to execute it is another thing. Though I surmise that one way to challenge Demogorgon would be to build a vast army on another plane entirely and crash it into the Abyss or take the Abyss itself and throw it somewhere else. Somewhere you would have an advantage.
Wait, so let me get this straight... The Meta to becoming the king of demons, _is to be a bard?..._ ... *_SO YOU'RE SAYING I CAN SEDUCE THE ENTIRE DEMON REALM?! O-O_* EDIT: And i'll grow a second head?!! Oh my god, A SECOND VOICE FOR SONG, WHAT JOY! :')
For the monster i like the idea of a paladin or cleric of a god - where the gods alignment was changed via torture and the paladins and clerics were dragged into madness and either died or were transformed - eventually into a form of undeath - so these paladins would be multiclassed death knights with smite powers from an insane and broken god - not directly turntable due to the original radiance of their deity.
There are two other obyrith's that are demon lords and not currently hunted by the remaining demons, both due to their power: Pazuzu and the Pale Lady. Pazuzu is no longer a true Obyrith, but has changed to something that is neither Obyrith or Tan'arii, he rules the skies of the Abyss. The Pale Lady is just that powerful. Her power is on par with Orcus and Gra'zzt, and her true form is so horrific that reality literally and actively tries to obscure her, and if you should see it, your mind would shatter. And no, non-obyrith demons are not immune to this.
@@Voldrim359 to be fair all tenari start with completely broken minds, that's the price of dying a evil being of chaos. Their chaotic directionless and formless minds and body are why the demons engage in the soul trade.
I have to point out some mistakes of the eladrin part, the eladrin refers to the "Celestial eladrin, a race of elf-like celestials", not "Fey eladrin, elven inhabitants of the Feywild", these celestial eladrin are the native of Arborea. Queen Morwel is also the ruler of the celestial eladrin.
running the adventure path would have been such a daunting task if not for this video. it's nice to have an abbreviated version of the entire storyline at my fingertips!
DND generally doesn’t have that much akin to real immortality since the game is based around eventually finding something or gaining enough levels that can eventually be used to destroy or kill a target of sufficiently high strength. The Demogorgon thus moreso represents the idea of CGP Grey’s video “Rules for Rulers” where the principle is “when you act using the throne, the throne acts upon you.” In this case the keys to power for any would-be prince of demons would be unknowable magic that can force the acknowledgment of you as prince by all demons, which itself must necessarily be something that represents a connection (presumably subconscious) between all demons and you, thus the other demons subconsciously channel their desire for chaos into you as they are defined to be unable to be anything other than manifestations of a desire for chaos.
Ya know, in my absolutely ridiculous scheme to conquer people in the Abyss for my own benefit during a mass deicide, I think Dagon is the number one priority. Capture him. Copy his knowledge. Cook the ancient fish. I am now a broker for knowledge and on a warpath in the Abyss. Also I need to find a way to make sure Demogorgon cannot enslave my Hydras. Or just use enchanted armors. That can totally work.

Father son talks could not be more different between the siblings
Long story short, I actually DID a few of the things to weaken Demogorgon, lower its CR, even confused the 2 heads to attack each other with help of the wispers of Dagon (it wasnt him personally, we had an old artifact that wispered his voice and command)(this time wispering to bouth heads at once, causing the anger and confusion)
Long story short at the moment of its death and with almost all main baddies killing each other for the double cround "Sreggad Elbon" did the unthinkable and used all the power and magic he had as new prince of Demons to physical and metaphorically destroy the crown! "no more Prince of Demons, only his Law, because no Demon, angel or Mortal was able to stop him, by the simple mention of his true Name" as Sreggad Elbon IS Nobble Daggers", and simply banished into some far away dimension (no-one knows where or can find him)
In this short comment is obvious, but this story took place over 3-5 years, with different groups and NO-one ever realized that, NO master or player. So it was by best "Joke". Adventure/destiny took away my character, so I addapted and accepted my fate, and decided I would take something for my own. So I did, it was MY character who killed Demogorgon and took away the chance to claim the tittle/crown

That plan most of the time backfired... Especially with demons

Law and Chaos work in a weird way in D&D. The demons of the abyss are supposed to represent complete chaos, yet they have armies and generals, and such things do require at least some order.
Chaotic evil is not true chaos, true chaos is in limbo.

Did you just said that demogorgon would become weaker if malcanthet betrayed him?
Well, time to give that old alcoholic in my campaign a backstory
It would be interesting if Malkenthet and Oboxob had a relationship, and then see what kind of spawn would come from that. The act of that as well as the blow to Demogorgon might be pretty bad.
It might be the only method to challenge Demgorgan in a meaningful way, besides helping Graz'zt or Orcus.
30 minute rhexx video? I got time for that.
Someone, somewhere has been running the longest D&D campaign ever and they don’t know it
I think it would be really cool to have a campaign focused on winning the crown from Demogorgon and then trying to reshape the Abyss toward a good purpose. I don't think it's likely, but it would be interesting to see how it would be attempted and anticipating the consequences.
I think you miss the point of the absolute ideology of the abyss. Fundamentally it is chaos. Transforming that would mean destroying it.
@@Doubleranged1 transforming it from chaos is impossible. Transforming it from evil however...if a Chaotic Good person or creature with a strong enough will became Prince of Demons it MIGHT be possible.

Super helpful for out of the abyss, thanks again rex
After the conclusion of the inner and outer planes series can you do a series about all of the demon lords? They are all very interesting with Juiblex being my favorite!
in 4e's lore Demo was once killed by a mortal who gained the title of Prince. He didn't return by ritual, or cheating with an avatar, though. The abyss just remade him, which I think is SO much better. He's even more unkillable, because the Abyss simply will not allow his death.

The Demogorgon is one of my favorite killers in Dead by Daylight.

In a way I think the very existence of Demogorgon it's part of a great balance, like if he dies it means the beginning of something terrible
So even demons can have their minds break... Thats a new one
@@Voldrim359 to be fair all tenari start with completely broken minds, that's the price of dying a evil being of chaos. Their chaotic directionless and formless minds and body are why the demons engage in the soul trade.

He should consider himself lucky. I can 1-hit any 2 legged mammal.
But he doesn't have that weak spot.
For being the prince of demons, he's really just a family man
I'm new to dnd but demogorgon seems to be the very concept of immorality made flesh
@@evannibbe9375 They said immorality, not immortality.
Love all your content that you put out! Keep up the awesome work!
Can't wait for Grim Hollow, shame it won't be DnD Beyond compatible, gonna need to use paper again...
Huh. Arrendagorst sounds like someone to bring under my wing.
