According to this video, Orcus was fighting with Graz'zt for the title of Prince of Demons when Demogorgon crawled out of the Abyssal mire to claim the crown for himself. So if he climbed the demonic heirarchy to become a demon prince, he did so VERY early in the cosmos ... like when mortals were first made.
My take on it was always Orcus was one of the first mortals to become Balors…first batch along side THE Balor. That’s my head canon anyway. Also given the time span covered when talking the history of the abyss…a few millennia would be a pretty rapid rise all things considered. Like the abyss itself…the canon is chaotic and shifting at best lol
I might have missed it but Demogorgon was "killed" (or banished) in the novel "legend of Drizzt, Heros book 3" when the city of Menzoberranzan was attacked by him. Loth blessed her followers and help the drow "kill" the demon prince. If any one wants more Demogorgon.
Put enough bodies on a problem and even a god can be taken down. But I think we can assume his full power was not brought to bear on the city. We can infer this from the fact it survived. Something like Demogorgon isn't gonna risk losing something he can't afford to lose on a gambit in a pitiful mortal realm.
I love how your videos on Demons & Devils really dives into their personal motivations, you point out how unique they really are. When I read about them I don't pick up on that and they just kinda seem all the same, you have a way of making them more believable and interesting. Thanks!
Stranger things was the first thing that got me interested in dnd. Aside from my cousin relaying stories from his games when he was younger. Specifically his dwarf character that fell off a mountain side and decided to flap his arms and fly..... Roll nat 20. 😂 the dwarf rises above the mountains cliff flapping his arms furiously. Then lands in the snow beside his fellow adventurers exhausted and must take a short rest.
wow! Your cousin is the person that actually DID the famous "Falling Flapping Dwarf" trick that every single D&D player has heard a hundred times at every fan convention since 1985?!?!?! I think your cousin may have told you a lie. Not unlike the person who ACTUALLY DID originally tell that story, because only the weakest of DM's would allow any such stupidity to succeed. It is game of magic but ONLY magic can suspend natural physics. You can't "fly" without spell to make it happen. And it takes a Long Rest to ease the "Exhausted" condition, not a Short Rest.
‘As you fall, flapping your arms like the world’s most over grown bearded duck, your bag is snagged by a hardy tree branch, bending a full 135 degrees. You begin to hear cracking as you come to a stop, and rocks begin to crumble at the roots as you feel your bag begin to dig into your armpit. You are launched in the air back the way you came. Nice 20.’
Mr. Pickett your content is astounding! Not a D&D player myself (aside from the games BG 1+2 ID 1+2 NWN 1+2 ect.) so I've dipped my big toe in the lore over the years. I am a fictional writer though so your content is an absolute goldmine of inspiration! Thank you for the hours of entertainment 👌
@@jacobshelt01 From a narrative perspective, I missed arguably the best one, Planescape: Torment. I've learnt a lot more about the various planes from this channel, including Sigil. Would have loved to dive into that in my youth knowing what I do now.
@@jacobshelt01 Truly wish I had the time to sit down and enjoy a good ARPG, life and writing sadly take up far too much of it these days. Luckily though I channel that in my writing, creating an engaging narrative is my passion now 😌
I was under the impression that dagon was on par with the queen of chaos in power as it was stated when she gathered the other demonlords, The only exception to this was Dagon, whose power she feared. Dagon always whispers his secrets to one head at a time (never both at once), thus playing a major role in the tension between Demogorgon's heads.
Great video, perhaps after you have covered the other main demon lords you could do a video on great evils and how they fit within the pantheons or power structure. Them aswell as the aboleth feel kinda shoehorned into the lore more as a nod to lovecraft and don't seem very flushed out.
D&D could stand for 'demons and demons' So many partially sketched out demon lords. Piecing together the lore, the queen of chaos indeed could not rally dagon. Whether from fear, apathy, eagerness to start the war against the multiverse is unknown. My guess is a combination of all 3. The queen slew many obryith lords who refused her. If she had won, im thinking then it was dagons turn. She lost though, so its unknowable what wouldve happened
You could modify the ritual that the potential thrall goes through so that the demon slices through the corpous callosum, the thick bundle of nerves that connect the two hemispheres of the brain. This is actually performed in humans in extreme cases of epilepsy to stop seizre signals travelling from one side of the brain to the other. Thralls in game may experience apraxia / aphasia, balance issues or even Hemispatial neglect. The latter could manifest with thralls shaving half their face (and not realising they missed half), denying that some of their limbs are theirs or ignoring things that fall only on once side of their vision (maybe they only talk side on). Maybe they can also now concentrate on two spells at once :D
You should do a detailed video on Raistlin and Fistandantilus (dragonlance), Raistlin is what made me interested in d&d and in my opinion is the arch type mage, worthy of a video

thank you for making my campaign epic i always liked him "demogorgon" just needed some extra flex of inspiration. also thanks for making a player know kender CAN feel FEAR!!!!!. XDDD really really the player liked it as well as in the read. so~ thanks mate....
It's been a while since I've read the novel, but I thought in Dragons of Summer Flame, many Kender experienced fear for the first time due to the destruction brought on by Malystryx the Red.
Oh my friend, you must have a conduit into my head. I've been planning some Demogorgon related material recently! Thanks as always for your thorough and thoughtful coverage.
These videos are top notch, I've been peripherally aware of D&D for years now, played a few games with my buddy who is DM, but the tabletop was always a little slow for me. But with Baldurs Gate 3 recently coming out, ive really gotten into the lore, and your vids have been tremendously helpful filling in the backstory, so thanks a lot. Epic addition of the Conan the Barbarian score on this vid: "And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline. For no one, no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts... This you can trust."
Demogorgon is ridiculously powerful. All but the most powerful characters would shit their plate mail even laying eyes upon him. Think about his passion for rage and chaos and then add in his abilities and intellect. He's destruction personified and has perfected the art of destroying. If I was DM'ing a game with him in it, this is one encounter I take zero pity on the PCs. You'd best be bringing EVERYTHING against him in the most articulated way or you're going to end up a mane or worse.
I actually made a fusion of the stranger things demogogon with the original by giving them two flower pedal mouths and the ability to dimension door between dimensions using a black inking stuff as their door as well as a fun little move where they use the door ability and only puts their arm in it and will try to punch the party at where ever they are. I call it “a rift punch”
Hmmmm Demogorgon and pale night both made a race of demon spider things maybe something in the far realm or outside reality gave them the idea of spiders a massive hive of creepy horrible spider like evil just viewing these two as caught in its web
Been playing in a Savage Tide group for the past 3 years. (old ass 3.5 campaign that was in Dungeon magazine, had Demogorgon as the BBEG. Our DM adapted it for 5e.) Now the campaign ended, we killed Demogorgon's sorry ass, and it feels so damn good to finally be listening to this video that I purposely didn't watch to avoid spoilers.
So, four years later, I might not expect an answer, but in 5e, would you still allow Demogorgon, and other similar monsters to grant divine spells to clerics? In my experience, the ability to grant such spells is an ability that sets gods apart, so a Demon Prince, not counting as a deity, wouldn't be able to do this. In my headcanon, gods don't empower Warlocks, because unlike such weaker Patrons, they have the power to grant real power, in the form of full casting, and get a greater hold of their souls. Patrons, lacking such a boon, tend more to slip secrets, and lead their Warlocks along via breadcrumbs, trying to get them to do their will. I getvthat part of that might just be my preference, but how about you? Could 5e Demogorgon, Graz'zt, or Fraz'Urb'luu still have the strength to empower Clerics? If they do, then why "waste time" with Warlocks? And I know part of that isn't fair; Warlocks can be a blast, and have several fun builds and abilities, but the biggest complaint I always hear is limited casting, followed by dual-classing into Sorcerer, because Charisma caster. Since many Patrons are definitely not mighty enough to grant full casting, would you let Demogorgon "double-dip"? Fraz? Asmodeus is a weird area, since he definitely has clerics, but also contracts warlocks; I haven't had to feel that out yet, in a game, but what is your opinion?
Well, regardless, clerics can always cast up to 3rd level spells, so they get those, but wouldn't it be more interesting if your cleric got to choose arcane spells instead? After all, Demogorgon knows all spells and rituals (well, one head certainly does), because what you are making is more accurately called... a cultist.
It would be nice if you provided the spelling for all of these weird names and made up words. Either said aloud, or printed on screen or in the description. I could sound out "ixitxachitl" 100 times and never even get close. Luckily google knew what I meant by "demon ray" lol. Not that you don't put enough work into these videos already, they are phenomenal.
Hey, I enjoy your videos quite a bit and hope you keep doing long ones like this! You’re a fantastic storyteller and I’m hoping to absorb some of the descriptive strategies you use to detail those stories. Thanks!
newish subscriber from canada... been watching a lot of your videos lately and must say this one has to be my favourite. many thanks for putting the full hour treatment to one of my favourite characters! much love and keep up the awesome work!
AJ - I’ve been revisiting some of your older videos. Love Demogorgon and plan on having him be the Demon Prince the Yuan Ti in my campaign worship. Side info - Ilsidahur makes his first “appearance” in Dungeon Magazine #10 (March / April 1988) for the short adventure The Shrine of Ilsidahur (stats are provided on pg 8)
Love the intro, I love using Demogorgon in settings that the players an even the beings of the setting do not know Demogorgon is a single being with two personalities, but instead know him by the main name of his two heads instead. Like that either Demongorgon does have a single cult that exist in the setting, but within that cult is a split within which two sub-cults exist devoted to one of the heads thinking that the other cult is a imposter, or that the two heads have founded separate cults that the other head does not know of actually, and these cults actually work against the other.

So much nostalgia. I played D&D long ago. It gets much harder to find a group as an adult, so I ended up in MMOs. I would still play if I could. I bought first edition books when they came out I was a child (so parents bought them), 2nd edition, 3.5, 4th edition. That was about the end of it for me, last game I played was 4th edition.
OMFG AJ! You are spoiling me with all these videos! How'd you know that the only things I love more than dragons, are devils and demons?!?!?! Not to sound like an ingrate, but I really hope that my D&D crush, Graz'zt, is high on the list of coming videos! I love me some Asmodeus too! And, there's my D&D idol/role model, Iggwilv! That's my three biggest requests for you! Thanks again for also covering Tiamat! I confess, I was a little suprised that her video profile was not followed by Bahamut! Which is no problem for me, because although I'd certainly watch, and appreciate a video on him, he's not on my top favorite list! I'd wager that he has his fans! I greatly appreciate your work AJ, and all of the effort that you put in to your videos! I know that I'm far from alone in my appreciation! You are the best! :)
Wow, thanks Gabriel :) Yes, Graz'zt will be featured very soon, I think Orcus has the overall most votes for the next Lord of Ruin, and Iggwilv is also on the way (That will take a lot of research!), I might pop in a vid on Vecna, Yeenoghu, Dagon, Obox-Ob and a host of others (so many to choose from!)
Good evening from across the pond A.J. I was thumbnailing when I saw what I'm guessing was the comments section of an old live stream you did....tried to comment but couldn't find the line to start, well anyway you were asking what lords of destruction your fans want you to do next? And I thought to myself why talk about an arch-fiend or greater demon when you could talk about one of YOUR strongest most well put together characters,it doesn't matter what class just his or her or..... snicker snicker,it's level assuming like me you leave great written detail of adventures from the past. I use them to slowly build the calandar/timeline of any given world,it would be neat to hear anecdotes and funny stories of your adventuring party....just a thought! Long days and pleasant nights m8!
Cool, I enjoy the videos. One suggestion: I'd prefer the audio without the background drumbeat in the latter half (I notice Drunkens & Dragons did this too in his early videos). I find it makes listening a little difficult. I have a bass speaker on my setup but it's set at a pretty low level. Someone listening with just a standard desktop speaker probably doesn't find it as intrusive.
I generally avoid music in the talky bits of the videos these days, these Lord of Ruin specials are a bit more theatrical.. still, I can only judge by my own set up, listening to the vids through headphones, almost always on a PC (though they occasionally play on my smartphone when I am answering questions in the comments.
Dude. The lore was updated and still holds for 5e as well. This is common knowledge for the intense dnd community. Demogorgon was a primordial primarily. At least after 3.5e.
Awesome episode as usual. Voice over is beginning was epic. Demigorgons are so badass. Thanks for sharing the lore and details. Now I’ll introduce one into my campaign.
Loved the video, was happy to learn about the demon dino, but there's 2 things I question: 1. No mention of Demogorgons clones? 2. I feel like Godzillas Rage would have been better to cap off the end of the intro with instead of something that I'm 92% certain comes from one of the Conan Movies. Though that's partly because I watched a review of All Out Attack recently, so it's still fresh in my mind.
Running an out of the abbys campaign, can't wait for demogorgon to wreck some koa toa ass haha. But yeah really this guy ia going to be fun for every one to either fight or play :)
I want to defend how he was shown in Baldur's Gate, yes he was the boss battle but the end of that quest line is that you never quite defeat him and the only real way out is to basically banish him back to the Abyss, which in effect frees him, though he can't return for something like 100 years. The story factor in that boss battle makes him more than just a random boss, it makes him a theoretical future threat, so there is still a feeling of him being dangerous, if you have developed an attachment to the storyline of the game. If you don't have any sense of attachment to the story... why are you playing an RPG?
Are there any other videos that are going to be added to this playlist in the future? It is an absolute treasure trove of information about those who are the shapers of Ultimate Evil.... As always, I am a huge fan of all the work you do to create the videos that are amazing and informative... 🍻 My good man
I have been fearing this dastardly prince since the 80's. I remember him in the old blue Monster Manual and he had a stat block, even though I cant imagine putting a party against him in anyway other than him being behind the scenes mostly with rare and powerful occasional appearances, like he isn't an end boss I wouldn't think.... or is he! Its funny you mentioned the ancient and time honored Ixitxachitl, I was going to ask you about those damnable death rays, I didn't know they worshiped him, thats killer. Great video as always, I love them long, I watch and work at the same time, thank you for doing this. Maybe one day you can go live and do super chat so I can buy you lunch, it will take me awhile to lunch you in patreon lol. =)
AJ your content is some of the best there is for nerdy families like mine! Would you ever consider setting your content up for download somewhere? I know it would be an immense upload, but I can't be the only person willing to pay a significant amount of cash for a permanent set of your videos. Hell, I'd buy a memory stick full of your content and also gladly pay the hefty shipping from Under Down Under to Canada. Anyway, thanks for sharing what you love with all of us in such an awesome way.
I'm totally fine with you using a video screen capture program to make a permanent copy of my vids for your own archives. One of the reasons I make these lore videos, is that people tend to watch them as a primer before they run games, or binge listen to them while painting miniatures, the views on the vids accumulate gradually, helping the channel to grow. If I were to make them available offline, it would mean a long term loss to the channel, as people no longer play the older material. I hope that made sense. As I say, you are always welcome to do the downloading yourself for personal use.
8:55 You'll thank me later.

Demogorgon>lolth
Put enough bodies on a problem and even a god can be taken down. But I think we can assume his full power was not brought to bear on the city. We can infer this from the fact it survived. Something like Demogorgon isn't gonna risk losing something he can't afford to lose on a gambit in a pitiful mortal realm.
I love it that the dark, demonic narrator voice has a New Zealand accent :-D
I remember Demogorgon even before I got into AD&D. I remember playing a game called, Forbidden Forest that had a boss creature known as Demogorgon.
11:04 if you have the developer's Ascension mod installed and are using insane difficulty, that fight is ludicrous.
I love how your videos on Demons & Devils really dives into their personal motivations, you point out how unique they really are. When I read about them I don't pick up on that and they just kinda seem all the same, you have a way of making them more believable and interesting. Thanks!
22:05 I thought that motorcycle was the demogorgon...
Lmao. I thought it was a sound effect or something. 😂
Nice 20.’
Clever!
I hope you do yeenoghu as well, after all he had the most influence in the material plane out of all the daemon lords*

Ah, that makes sense, Dagon seems one of the demon lords who just endures the countless eons, sowing slow tides of terror throughout the cosmos.
Great video, perhaps after you have covered the other main demon lords you could do a video on great evils and how they fit within the pantheons or power structure. Them aswell as the aboleth feel kinda shoehorned into the lore more as a nod to lovecraft and don't seem very flushed out.
D&D could stand for 'demons and demons'
So many partially sketched out demon lords.
Crom claps at your soundtrack!
I thank Crom, strong in his mountain!
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels.
You should do a detailed video on Raistlin and Fistandantilus (dragonlance), Raistlin is what made me interested in d&d and in my opinion is the arch type mage, worthy of a video
Im loving the longer videos. The amount of detail you put into these is incredible and greatly appreciated by all Im sure
You make really great videos. Underrated for sure

I dont know how many times I've watched this just for the first part.
Tasselhoff also experienced fear in the presence of the Death Knight Lord Soth, when he captured Laurana.
Funny how demogorgon birthed the death knights and both are feared by kender

thank you for making my campaign epic i always liked him "demogorgon" just needed some extra flex of inspiration. also thanks for making a player know kender CAN feel FEAR!!!!!. XDDD really really the player liked it as well as in the read. so~ thanks mate....
It's been a while since I've read the novel, but I thought in Dragons of Summer Flame, many Kender experienced fear for the first time due to the destruction brought on by Malystryx the Red.
O lord it’s an hour long. I did not anticipate this well time to watch it.
It's easier in the future. You may find yourself sitting in a room wondering what to do. Thank you China.
Oh my friend, you must have a conduit into my head. I've been planning some Demogorgon related material recently! Thanks as always for your thorough and thoughtful coverage.
Most welcome Jeremy!
Epic addition of the Conan the Barbarian score on this vid:
"And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline. For no one, no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts... This you can trust."
Fantastic episode - I am running out of the Abyss now and this will add tremendously.
One of my favorite bosses of all time. One can make many different fight scenarios with only this monster
I'm guessing the green ring on the one fellows hand is a ring of magus killing? Making the one guy a mage assassin?
You rolled a 20 on your Wisdom save. :)

This is my favorite video you've done. The music, the back story, all of it.
Agreed. Tis epic. 😁
This video de-railed me from writing my history project; still worth every minute
41:50 Demogorgon could reach his goal if he obtained "the Apparatus".
Demogorgon is Demos (people) and gorgos (grim or dreadful), not daimon gorgon. He is a monster of two monsters, named Dreadful People.
True but try explaining that to Demogorgon and he’ll stuff you up your own ass for a laugh
Thanks!

Thank you again Sir, another great addition to an already impressive collection of videos.
Love the intro,
I love using Demogorgon in settings that the players an even the beings of the setting do not know Demogorgon is a single being with two personalities, but instead know him by the main name of his two heads instead.
Love the videos, thanks for the hard work. Would love to see one on Graz'zt!!

Awesome vid, dusted off my old book of vile darkness

Wow, thanks Gabriel :)
Yes, Graz'zt will be featured very soon, I think Orcus has the overall most votes for the next Lord of Ruin, and Iggwilv is also on the way (That will take a lot of research!), I might pop in a vid on Vecna, Yeenoghu, Dagon, Obox-Ob and a host of others (so many to choose from!)
Lmao that motorcycle noise actually made me jump. Thought it was some demonic sound effect till you said it wasn't 🤣
Really appreciate your work and ask the effort you put into these videos 👍 you're awesome!
I appreciate that!
That intro was straight badass!!

Love demons and oove long videos. Good job man
This needs to be updated. Demogorgon was first a primordial ever since fourth edition
Dude. The lore was updated and still holds for 5e as well. This is common knowledge for the intense dnd community. Demogorgon was a primordial primarily. At least after 3.5e.

Lol, in 5e, it is not a creature type. Demogorgon is a proper name of the prince of demons.
Vasilie Crisan true but there is no reason we can’t tweak it to be the beast it used to be! Just sample him from “out of the abyss”
Roll for Damage true.
Love the long video style!!!
Loved the video, was happy to learn about the demon dino, but there's 2 things I question:
1. Nope.
2. I acknowledge your feelings :)
@@AJPickett 1. Are they going to have a separate video? Or are they already in one you've made, and I haven't seen that one yet?
2. Pffft!
@@TheIdealofGreed They are a demon species, so, I will most likely do a video on them at some later date.
Running an out of the abbys campaign, can't wait for demogorgon to wreck some koa toa ass haha. But yeah really this guy ia going to be fun for every one to either fight or play :)
You'll get your wish. He might even wreck more than that. Be prepared and don't throw yourself at him at L6 lol
Now for the Real question: How many shoulders does Demogorgon have? 2? 3? 1/2?
two and a half.
Awesome intro. Thank you.
This was great. i loved it
I would really love some details as majors figure's "plot/story" has progressed through the editions of DnD

As always, I am a huge fan of all the work you do to create the videos that are amazing and informative... 🍻 My good man
Never say never.
Thanks for this video my good sir. It has been very enlightening
