- I bought the OG 20GB Backwards Compatible PS3 from eBay... I'm excited for this one. This is the first PS3 that came out, and not only is it backwards compatible, but it doesn't even have wifi! Kinda crazy, but no big deal if you have access to a wired internet connection. The one I bought comes with the original box and some games/controllers, and is also on firmware V2.60! I bought a 20gb ps3 recently, used it for half life 2 and one session of black ops 2 zombies and it nuked the console. It was reballed and refurbished in every way by the seller, no dust nothing. Buying one of these is making a 50/50 gamble. The fans are silent, and the motherboard doesn’t get hot, can someone explain this Phat ps3 headfukery?

I love it when sellers use the games as packaging for the console . Who would think that's a good idea ? Then the genius used the controllers as packaging inside for the console . Some people have no shipping smarts whatsoever .

It's shame for those earlier games with the spiderman 3 font, those cases are harder to replace.
Didn't know the 20gb lacked the chrome trim, looks super neat.
The PS3 Slim 160GB and 320GB model looked different too. The 320GB model had a silvery trim for the button row while the 160GB model was just all black.
I had a similar thing happen to my old six axis controller. It would flash once then never keep a charge. I fixed mine by putting a new battery in it and cleaning the inside board. It worked great after that.
eBay is extremely expensive, but can be the only place to pickup older consoles if you’re looking for something very specific.
True true and deoending on how specific just for fun browsing can show that fwiw it may be abke to rhn a price point of up to several grand... regarding various electrinics (still in the box as a peice of NEW never opened OLD stock etc various items but yah ykwis)
I got mine for $350. Was kinda gross inside. Had bugs and lots of dust. I cleaned it out fully, applied new thermal paste, upgraded the HDD to 1TB and got custom firmware installed. It's been a good investment but boy can the fans be loud at times. Mainly got this model to play PS2 games.

I remember getting home and immediately going and buying a hdtv for it .. good times
Noticed the original 20gb PS3 still has the sticker for a blu ray movie included, just like the 60gb model.
I've got my CECHA01 60GB full bw compatible PS3 for around 61 USD. I'm in Europe so that model is very rare here. It was in its original box with the sticker indicating it is from the first batch. I had the warranty sticker but I removed it to repaste. It barely had any scratches and its previous owner only used it as a BD player.
You're very lucky to get that for 60. They go for well over 200 now.

You can't use CECHA, CECHB or CECHE models in Europe. The only model you can use is CECHC. You can't use them because the PS2 games are region locked and you can't play PAL games on them so full bw models are useless in PAL region. You can play only PS3 games on them.

Still can't believe how badly Sony dropped the ball with the launch of PS3. It's truly a beautiful console. I'm glad they revamped it with the slim. I currently have a PS3 Slim with 320 GB memory and a PS5.
The Slim is great. Especially with a custom Firmware. It just sucks that it cannot play SACDs anymore which would have made this thing an absolute one for all system for Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs and SACDs, as well as for gaming of course. But at least it consumes a LOT less energy than the FAT PS3.

I really love the original ps3 that launched in 2006, i have the CECHA01 backwards compatible model that still works.
I delidded mine. And is.. more tame with the fans. Still noticable but not as loud as it was.

@@zekerodriguez13 I was lucky to pick up a CECHA01 for less than $150. It seems very clean but the warranty sticker is on and I'm sort of not confident enough to disassemble it. Mine also has a strange temperamental drive that doesn't read the PS2 games sometimes.

I have this exact same model, I mainly use it to play PS2 and ps1 games since I don’t wanna stress out the RSX with big ps3 games.

I bought a small 6" fan (got it on sale for $7 at Home Depot) a few years back that blows into the front of my ps3. Keeps it at a nice temp.
This exact model was my first ps3. I honestly thought this one looked better and more sleek without the silver in the front. Unfortunately, died to ylod, but i have another 40gb fat model still going strong to this day. Wish it had the reliability of the ps2, but it will honestly always be my favorite console

I remember shortly after the ps3 released, I went around with my dad to find one. Hard to believe I was 14 then, now I’m 29. I cannot remember if we got a 20 or 60 gb model but I do know we got it at a Walmart that I now live about 3 minutes from. however I had absolutely no idea (until recently) some of these were backwards compatible. Very cool!
Awesome. THIS model could also still play SACDs. But i just would not really feel safe playing with it without doing the YLOD fix first. Someone here on YT did a fantastic YLOD issue analysis and showed what was actually the real reason behind it and how to properly fix it. Once this is done, the console should run fine for years to come... till the CMOS error ruins it... The BEST PS3 is still the Dev Kit model which has all the features you'd wanna have.
I found a 60gb fat model at a pawn shop 3 years ago for $30 because the blu-ray drive wasn't working. I replaced it and it works wonderfully.

Let's not forget how much the PS3 struggled at first because of its premium price. Sony recovered so well throughout its lifetime that at the end of the generation it managed to overtake the Xbox 360 in global sales numbers. It eventually trumped 360 in Europe and Japan.

@Zerozerozero Thing is, even at such a price point, Sony was losing money with every launch model sold. You technically got a bargain for that price, Sony just went too far on the tech.
If you looked at it as simply a Blu-ray player, it was the cheapest one on the market.

Resistance FOM was one of the launch titles from 2006 in the USA (2007 in the UK). Regarding cleaning - anti-bac (or maybe a wet wipe?) and reuse the tissue paper the seller included in the box? Just a thought. Allow to dry though, perhaps? Try using a lens cleaner also, it might make Resistance playable? And perhaps use a hand vac to clean the vents, as it might help there too? Just some ideas.
just saying that feeling hot air in the back of your ps3 is a good thing! It means it is dissipating that heat
if the fan is going haywire and the air is cold however, it means the components are getting hot and that heat is not getting dissipated, in that case the most likely cause is dry thermal paste which needs to be replaced ASAP unless you wanna end up with a toasted ps3
I use an air compressor to blow out the dust. These older PS3s have a gigantic fan that you can actually see from the back. Anyways I normally have pretty good luck blowing the dust out of them without having to take them apart and it quiets them down pretty well.
Just make sure you block the fan from spinning before you blow it free. Otherwise you may overspin the fan and permanently damage it.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 Yeah that could be good to do. My 40gig has an auto cleaning cycle as well but the problem is it'll blow dust everywhere if you do it indoors. People can do that too but just make sure the system is outside.

That PS3's yelling for a clean up and thermal paste replacement. You can remove the warranty sticker without displaying the VOID tampering, if you want to.

I got a BC compat 60GB PS3 back in 2014 for $100, the fan would kick on like crazy found a youtuber, I think he's called NSC Modz, followed his guide on delidding the console and did a small reflow and now it purrs like a kitten, freakin sweet. I modded it so I could easily control the fan curve and this thing stays cool and pretty quite, not nearly as bad as it used to.
Nice video again and I also still really like these backwards-compatible PS3 models too although I really wish they would be more reliable and all. I also really wish Sony would have kept the PS2 backwards compatibility feature on all models of the PS3, including the Slim and Super Slim models too. Otherwise, if they ever did, then I wouldn't have to worry about having to grab one of the original models of the PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility just to play PS2 games on the PS3 that way. I've already been through a few backwards-compatible models of the PS3, and they all stopped working on me although I still have one other working PS3 which is backwards compatible with PS2 games. I've had it now for almost six years already as well and it still works fine so far for the time being since I haven't gotten the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) on it yet or anything being that I've been lucky with it so far. It would have also been great perhaps if the PS4 and PS5 consoles were ever backwards compatible with game discs from previous generations of PlayStation as well although the PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games though since I'm able to play all of my favorite PS4 games on the PS5. I still really like how the original models of the PS3 are physically backwards compatible though with PS2 games and they just seem better on the PS3 too for some reason, especially if the PS3 is also connected to an HDTV via HDMI which helps upscale the graphics in the games that way. I even really like how you can also create Internal Memory Cards for both PS1 and PS2 on the PS3's HDD to save game data for PS1 and PS2 games instead of using the physical memory cards.
I just picked up a nearly perfect CECHA00 in Hard off store with barely any defects.
I live in Japan, normally from UK where they only have CECHC03 partial emulation console.
I paid 10000 yen which is like £66 or $87. Maybe you could find even cheaper ones here or not but 10000 yen for the original PS2 hardware models is pretty cheap. Will be region unlocking it to my region to play PAL games too.
That's funny, I've never heard a thrift store referred to as a, hard off store. I like it.
CFW can be installed on pretty much every ver no. now however the latter ones have had less support as such.
CECH 25XX-43XX have no cfw support, 25xx models are hit and miss

the first console where I live was the cecha01 20gb and 60gb model. Those had the actual emotion engine on them here. Im not sure if the b01 did but i know it at least still played ps2 games

You must change the thermal paste as soon as possible. You will yellow light quickly. Notice how your ps3 warranty sticker hasn't been removed? It's never had the thermal paste replaced.
It's also REALLY dusty inside. Just opening it up and dusting it will make a huge difference. It'll run cooler and the fans will run slower and quieter. But changing the thermal paste is still a good idea. It's really old. He wants to "preserve" the price of the console but it'll be worthless if it breaks down because it runs too hot

Just some advice.....you want to remove that warranty sticker, open it up and change the thermal paste under and above the heat spreaders or else it will fail...its like running a 15 year old car without an oil change and brake pads

Warranty seal is not really a good thing. New thermal paste can keep consoles going longer. Maintaining your hardware is a good idea if you can.
Such a great console! That model is fully backwards compatible just like the 60gb model, so it can play almost every single ps2 game flawlessly. It could even play Ratchet & Clank for PS2 which runs really poorly on 80gb model.

I still have the original Japanese PlayStation 3, model CECHA01 here, in full working order with Linux installed on OtherOS. Complete with the original Japanese box, manuals, accessories and all cardboard inserts in immaculate condition. There aren't many of those around any more, not in this condition. I bought it on week 1 of release in Osaka, but I've been too buys to actually play it. So it's never really left the box.
I got this exact model in box for 80$ a week ago. It was a super awesome find, the manuals are still wrapped and warranty sticker intact . Ima let it sit there till I can delid better, make a custom case, better fan, SSD , and put a better power supply .
Also ya really should preferably replace the 8 capacitors that say "NEC/Tokkin" (tokin?)

Dont worry about the fw, with these old consoles you can revert back to original 2.60 fw with a very easy process. Just put a file on a usb and install it or use a cmfw.
yeah the Webbrowser CFW Install method is basically what is used for that.

@@hustla818Games had the firmware packages bundled with them, because many people don't have internet access and they needed to be able to update their console and play newer games when they bought them. This was the case for the PSP as well.
I still got my original ps3 it’s like new been well looked after. Don’t use it now because I’m on ps5 now. My ps3 is backwards compatible with ps1 and 2 and still got its warranty sticker, it’s never ever caused me a problem and never let me down. Still have my box, etc. was a good console at the time.
Always really cool to see the OG PS3, If it was the other way around and the OG Ps3's were the reliable one's I'd pickup a Original PS3 over the slim any day of the week, The slims are just a black box not very pleasing to the eye.
The Super Slim is the way to go imo. They look *soo* much cooler than the Slim, and they have a mechanical disk door which is great for utility. They're also extremely compact, lite as a feather.

@@KingStr0ng That Mechanical Disc drive you have to manually slide across and slide back to lock the disc in is definitely more likely to break quicker if you over use it for years.
The fact that you have to manually have effort each time just to get the disc out of the drive by having grip to pop it out.
Its way more simple to press rhe triangle button on ur control and eject the Disc from ur PS3 slim.
Jacob, I thought I owned the last existing PS3 like yours. You need to crack that seal though as you will burn that thing up. You need to clean and repaste. While you are in there disassemble the blu Ray drive and dust and clean with alcohol. It will run like new and alleviate your worried of ROD or YOL.

I just went to a yard sale here in California and bought a fat PS3 model cech-b00 in real nice shape. And got it for $20.00. and a black Wii GameCube compatible for $15.00 figured it was a good deal

The ZSSR power supplies are trash and literally become a grill.
What checks would you do on the power supply?
The reason why you aren't able to play The Last of Us in firmware 2.60 is due to one of the latest firmware updates Sony released for the Playstation 3. Specifically, The Last of Us made use of a new function that this new system version included, which allowed it to borrow more ram from the OS.
Hopefully it works, and yes It is also because the game released years later. But that's a fact.
This is why you HEN your system.
Most of the firmware updates are pretty useless.

@Gavin Townsley Updates came included on the games discs. If he'd pressed Yes to update, it would install new system version from the disc, but not the newest available. Playing offline not equals to games running on obsolete firmware, lol.

Studio Ghibli are the best anime studio in the far east, if you have ever watched and enjoyed one of their films you'll appreciate this game. You can pick it up on sale from Steam from time to time for about a score and I'd say it's worth that to give it a try, shoot DL it, play it for an hour then refund it it you want a free trial.

I paid 20 dollars for one that hasn't been used since 2009 and it had the original warranty seal. I opened it and replaced the disc drive and it works perfectly and super quite. It was the 60 gig model and put a 1tb ssd in it
Just so you know ps3 doesn't really benefits from ssd speed since it only has Sata 1

I owned the same system (60gb) but of course the blinking light thing right at the end of warranty. And because of the 720 graphics, I basically used 360 except for the MLB the show.
I bought a 2nd hand 60gb PS3 for 150 dollars, didn't play it much because I had a PS3 slim 3.55 jailbreak firmware. Later found out the 60gb PS3 Blu-ray drive was broken and most of the 60gb will have ylod sooner or later. Then, I decided to replace the drive and sell it out again for 150 dollars. Should have collect this 60gb, since it's so rare and come with sacd capability.
I found it normal at this point for the PS3 Fan to be loud as hell.
I even make jokes that it’s going to explode while I’m playing BO2 Zombies.
Ni no Kuni is one of the best JRPGs for the system!
i just bought this same model (but japanese) for $190 with an oem controller and all the cords. It even still had the warranty seal. i just repasted it and it works great. i guess i got lucky.

The PlayStation 3 is a great video game console.
On that console that is so old the thermal is for sure dried up it’s better to open it and change the thermal or it will get the ylod it’s a classic I have one myself and there very hard to find
