You seem to glue the bent wood directly after immersing in water, skipping a step others recommend of drying the wood in a small toaster oven. This is done because CA glue does not react well with wood that has high moisture content, particularly when accelerator is used. Why do you skip this step?

I've noticed some use glue some use light cured resin....does one hold up better than the other
I have always switched between them just based off my project and what works easier for each one. I think they are both great options.

pretty ring can you make the channel if you don't have a lathe
It is a bit harder but there are ways if you use a drill or a drill press!
I'd imagine a skilled eye and a rotary tool could make the channel.
What paint were you using please?
A simple acrylic paint for the hobby store.

What tool do you use to cut your channel?
I have been using a cut off blade on the metal lathe. However in the past I also have used a carbide insert triangle tool as well.
